Disney owns Firefly. As long as that stands true, I hope there will be no remake or continuation. Somebody else needs to take it out of Disney's hands first.

I know this is being posted long after filming as it was a pateron exclusive for a while, but still I'd like to say I'm very sorry for your loss and I hope you are doing well
I hate it when they spoil the episode in the synopsis! Maybe avoid the synopsis for the last two episodes. Or don't. You do you, always! Also, now that I've watched the episode, my condolences for losing your friend. It's just never easy, but especially when it's unexpected.
You finally get to see Jayne isn't as greedy for money for himself but he is sending most of his money back home to his mom
Also, his sick brother.
Jayne's brother Matty had Damp Lung and he was sending money home to buy the medicine his brother regularly needed to treat that chronic condition. Part of the reason that Jayne was so hostile to the Tams was they jeopardized his ability to keep sending money home. As Simon, and eventually River, proved that they added value to the crew, Jayne became more accepting of them. It probably also helped that Jayne almost assuredly believed that River could kill him with her mind!
Think a lot of reactors miss that little gem.

The actor playing Book (Ron Glass) has passed away. He isn't coming back, unfortunately. Alan Tudyk has his own show on Peacock. You might like it. It's called Resident Alien and it's in it's 3rd season.
It's quite fun, when the show is about the show and doesn't wander off into DEI wokeness garbage.
There's a few episodes where it loses the plot and panders to the weirdos rather than the fish out of water hilarity it started out as.
Also, Asta just keeps getting fatter and forcing the showrunners to alter the story to hide the fact that the actress is now a tub of lard.
She was quite attractive and fun in season one, but by season three she is a waddling fat duck with no personality other than "Me native, me oppressed, wypipo evil, and even the alien that took a white guy's face is evil and should feel guilty for wypipop actions because he looks like a colonizer" garbage.

They did indeed find out during the filming of this episode that the show was cancelled - they didn't even get to finish the season. The composer wrote the music for this episode as a funeral for the whole show.
The fans led an effort to get a movie made, and we got Serenity (the movie) as a result. They'd hoped for more than one movie, but alas...

Joss didn't just direct Firefly. It is his universe. The verse and characters came from his imagination.

You should watch the River Tam Sessions and the bloopers. The River Tam Sessions were promos for Serenity.
The cast and crew knew how special the show was. They gave the recall button from "Out of Gas" to Joss Whedon and told him they would come back, Serenity's egg-shaped door was kept by someone, I don't recall who. Like you I wish someone would bring it back.

Tracy sealed his fate with Zoe, by pointing the gun at Wash. He sealed it with Jayne, by pointing it at Book. The final bail in his coffin, was pointing the gun at Kaylee. That sealed his fate with Mal.
it's worse than you know. the cast and crew literally found out while making this episode that it was the last episode they would ever make. there was no advance notice and no chance to wrap anything up. the most the creative team could do was to reorder the last few episodes in post-production, even moving scenes between episodes, so as to avoid going out on such a low note. they actually created a minor continuity error in the process, but i've never seen anyone catch it on a first viewing; i'll point it out after episode 14.
"The message" the crew got during the filming was that the show was cancelled. That added real emotion to the funeral.
And we learned Jayne send all his money home to his parents.
Mal really needs to "explain" his plans a bit more often. He makes good plans. And the end usually comes out in their favour... but he never explains until after so people sometimes don't trust the process.
Book did seem to try to explain and he threatened to kill him.
Yes, mal really should explain better. Many problems during the series would have been avoided. It some times feels like lazy writing, but the best explanation I can think of is him being used to be in a military hierarchy, where orders are usually not explained.

The storyline in the Fallout series kind of remindnme of Firefly. Not the overall aesthetic of the show. But they had to come up with a unique storyline that hasn't been covered by the video game itself.
Tracy made two mistakes: threatening Wash in front of Zoe, and threatening KayLee in front of Mal.
Long reply, but you have much bad info. First Joss Whedon made a woman writer cry ON THIS SHOW. The network was making suggestions like adding aliens If that was her suggestion I'm glad he yelled at her. Now to get your feminist side with feminist logic. Do you actually want equality? Male writers coming up with stupid ideas get yelled at - can women do the job or are they too delicate? Now why a remake now would suck. It would be "improved" for modern audiences. Mal would be short for Mallory a strong independent woman who don't need no man. Zoe stays the same, but Wash is her lesbian marriage partner Jayne is unchanged - only a CIS white male can do Arial. Inara stays the same, but all her clients are like Atherton Wing and never like the magistrates son in Jaynestown. River and the Doctor are unchanged but Kaylee is a trans man or is it trans woman - male to female.. The doctors reticence as a beautiful (and brave :) ) woman throws herself at him would be his own transphobia he needs to work through. I have not worked out how to blame Trump for the China/US alliance, but it would be done. Oh this is the best scenario. It was on FOX. Disney bought FOX. You would remove Joss and replace him with Kathleen Kennedy.
Sorry for your loss. According to Joss Whedon, the story is true. In fact, they were told right before the funeral scene was shot. He also said he told Bear McCreary to rip our hearts out with the music during that scene.

Rebooting or even continuing a show like that is really hard to do, since it has been almost 22 years now, that the show ended, and 19 since the movie. Everyone is different and the chemistry that made the show click is different too. I think it better to leave it iconic then to try to recreate the miracle of the show. Another show in the same universe, maybe.... ?
I don't like the fact that they didn't let Tracy know what the plan was. Instead, they got into a shouting match and came a few millimeters away from killing Wash.
If you like Jayne's hat there are many sources online to get it.
Sorry for your loss. I caught this show a decade late and fell in love with it. I think the affection and the knowledge of the show's brief appearance in our minds has ruined any chance of it being anything near as good as we think it is if it were brought back...
Many seem to think that the 14th episode was the season finally, but it wasn't. The series was intended to be 22-24 episode seasons and last 5-7 seasons.
The series being canceled was not some accident or series of mistakes. What happened was orchestrated by an executive who wanted to cancel it and all the things like misleading viewers with misinformation about the series with advertisements, refusing the 2-hr pilot, showing episodes out of order, and changing the timeslot without informing the viewers, were all to get the series canceled.
The movie was not intended as a wrap-up of the series. It was intended to continue the series in movie format but it just didn't do as well as hoped. There was also the possibility that maybe another network would pick the series up. FOX had nothing to do with the movie and refused to let them use the name Firefly.
Many of the fans would not watch a new Firefly series without Joss. A number of the actors have voiced that they would come back for the series. Disney currently owns Firefly.
The guy who commissioned the show got fired so the new guy who got his job "had" to make the series fail otherwise the top brass would be asking why they let the other guy go and if they should be getting him back. So the new guy "had" to make all the old guy's shows fail to justify keeping his new job.
Just remember and put into perspective it was only half a season not a full season
At this point, I don't think a "continuation" of the original series could ever work. Ron Glass had sadly passed away, and everyone is older now. I think the best case scenario would be a "Firefly: 20 Years Later" series where the show jumps ahead in real time to 20 years after the events of Serenity. Everyone has visibly aged, so why try to hide it? Instead lean into it and write it into the story. I think it would be the best of both worlds. It wouldn't invalidate what we already have, but we'd also get brand new Firefly content featuring the cast we all know and love. SPOILERS FOR POST-SERIES COMIC INFO:
Zoe and Wash's daughter would be a full grown adult now, and she could be a new regular cast member. Hell, if you really wanted, you could even bring back Wash as a cyborg or whatever. It's a little outlandish, but who cares, it would be awesome. More Alan Tudyk is never a bad thing lol
There have been people trying to bring it back since the series ended. The Movie was a concession towards that, and all that are still with us say they'd love to come back,,, but it just never seems to come back. Recently, there was a suggestion that Disney would pick it up, for example, but that dead-ended, last I heard. As far as Whedon, I think he wrote all of these episodes, and I don't know if it would be as good without him... If we ever get a chance to find out, I personally would be thrilled just to see them on the air again... and then we can see how it turns out =)
it's not even a full season. If I remember correctly, the last two episodes didn't even air. They were shot but Fox dumped the show before they were shown, so they got included in the DVD release.

Yes, Firefly is Joss Whedon's everything. It would be his say if it came back or not. He pushed for Serenity to be made to cap off the show. Also Ron Glass (Shepard Book) passed away back in 2016.
Hey Amanda, since you love science fiction, maybe you can watch the TV Show Continuum(2012). If you haven't seen it already. It's a great show.
Unfortunately, Ron Glass, Shepard Book, passed away a few years ago. Nathan Fillion is busy with "The Rookie," and Alan Tudyk, Gina Davis, and Morena B are just incredibly busy with movies and TV rolls. I don't believe they'd be able to re-capture the magic. They MIGHT be able to create a spin-off, and in addition to Joss Wheedon, they'd also need to get Tim Minear (sp?) as well. Those two working together did some incredible writing for Firefly!

"Why can't they bring back Firefly?" Well, Ron Glass is dead, Alan Tudyk may not be available (he wasn't going to be able to do more than the movie), lives have gone on. I'd love a spin off or next generation sort of thing, maybe bringing Saffron in as a sort of regular partner/antagonist who pairs up with Mal for crime and constantly has to be kept in check. I mean, who wouldn't want more Christina Hendricks?
A) you can't do the show without Whedon. And the cast wouldn't do it without him
B) easier to get one or two actors back for Dexter than it is to regroup an ensemble busy with other projects. All are busy...Fillion is Green Lantern in the Supermanmovie and a Recruit tv show, Baccarin is in Deadpool, Glass has passed, Tyduk has Resident Alien, voices Joker in the Harley Quinn series,, etc etc. etc.
C) Whedon has written a Serenity comic book series filling in some blanks. Thats really the only way for you to continue on after the film

At this point in posting, have you seen Serenity yet? Just curious (I won't post any related spoilers in the comments for any who haven't seen it yet).
Sadly this show could never come back. The cast see it clear as day. Every one of them loved it and constantly say they would do it, yet it doesn't actualy happen, because it CAN'T work. It either won't be as good, or it will be EXACTLY as good but the fans will say it isn't because it can no longer live up to it's own legendary hype. Best left as 13 epic perfect episodes and one godawfully crap film that fans pretend is good.

Fox have a lot to answer for, cancelling this. Greed was the motive and a lack of foresight. They persist with garbage for many seasons and cancel all their GOOD shows! That's Fox!
It won't be back. Too late, its been 20 years and everyone has moved on.
If anyone makes a new series with a new cast, it just won't be the same.
There's a show called Con Man you might like. Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion in a comedic fictionalized version of real life after the cancelation of Firefly.
They didn't just cancel season 2 they cut this first season short, there was supposed to be 22 episodes per season and Fox didn't even air the last 3 episodes. Fox TV Studios own the rights to Firefly and they refuse to bring it back despite the cult following, I think they just don't want to admit how badly they screwed up. They only conceded to the film in hopes to shut the fans up who were demanding it's return. Joss was instructed to tie the main story (Rivers story line) up in such a way it couldn't be revived.
I’m sorry for the loss of your friend. It’s never easy, no matter how old one is, no matter the circumstances. I can speak from experience over a devastating loss of my own that it *does* get better, a little bit at a time. But don’t be surprised when it hits hard out of the blue when you thought the pain had lessened. Those little setbacks do eventually get fewer and further between.
Anyway, great reaction. Your shock at Tracey “coming back to life” was pretty amusing, it’s good to see there are still surprising moments. I’m sure others have mentioned this, but I wouldn’t recommend reading the episode synopses beforehand, they are rife with spoilers!

The show is so good because of Joss Whedon. I would not watch any reboot without him at the head of it.
Then again, even if he was, I'd still want modern Hollywood to stay far, far away from this one. Go ruin some other IP. We don't need to turn this into another Rings of Power or Star Trek: Discovery.
Don't be afraid to show a few tears... it's very human. I tear up often. I had a friend, long ago, who suddenly died and so I understand. You're in very good control of your emotions, you're not Minnesotan by chance, are you?

Sorry for your loss Amanda, funny how life and fiction sometimes seem to connect.
It's funny, I always tend to consider this a weaker episode, but everytime I watch it, it moves me.
If the show were to come back, I think doing it without Josh Whedon would not be an option, apart from the fact that the actors would only be willing to do it with him at the helm, the whole dialogue and storyline of the show is so much down to Whedon, it just wouldn't work without him.
Whedon has professed many times he would love to continue the show and that it was the best experience working with this crew he ever had.
The actors more or less professed to the same and they said that they would do it for free if it were to continue.
Ron Glass, who played Shepherd, is no longer with us, so it would be without him.
I have doubts if it would work, however much I would love to see it, but sometimes it is about careful what you wish for.
I so much looked forward to the fourth Matrix movie and when it came, it was such a disappointment and I will never watch it again.
Firefly was indeed lightning caught in a bottle and it's such a thing of beauty, it is a gift that keeps on giving, no matter how often you rewatch it.

There has been talk about bringing it back. The crew has been on board so to speak. The trouble is most people aren't going to be happy with a reboot.. Yeah this is Joss Wheaton's baby. He did everything he could think of to save the show.
Each episode adds so much depth to the tapestry of the series' lore.

Having watched many reactions to FireFly makes me look more and more at the whole series as a setup for Serenity. The series is like the introduction and getting to know the characters, then comes Serenity, the main event. It's on another level production wise because it had a big budget, but the storyline is awesome. It will leave you mentally and emotionally exhausted, same as with all of us. Joss Whedon said the he tried to pack the second and third seasons of FireFly into one movie. It comes at you fast and furious.

What you heard was true. They knew the show was canceled at this point, and not just that, but the cast was super close. Nathen Fillian has said numerous times that this was the best job he ever had., the cast knew the show was special at the time they were doing it, as opposed to later. The cast and crew would be on set even when they were not needed because they all didnt want to miss out on the fun.
