    As a professional boot fitter I can say there was very little scientific information in this video. They only mention alignment and cuff angles. No mention of boot sole canting/ grinding to level the boot if needed. Boot shell and liners are heated and stretched. Many racers start with a plug boot which is then custom fit by the teams boot fitter. I am fortunate to have a sales representative that was a boot fitter for the US ski team so I know there is so much information that was not presented in this video.

    Everyone--including mere mortals--can benefit from a few tweaks to make your feet feel better and have better control of your skis. Custom footbeds provide a stable platform for your foot and compensates for high arches or flat feet. Canting can provide a neutral stance in order to stand flat on your skis. No one has perfect, symmetrical feet and legs. You can do a lot better for yourself than looking for the softest, fluffiest boots.

    Been skiing for more than 30 years but only as a holiday thing - 3 or 4 years ago I went without my all mountain flex 130 boots and I rented a racing boot flex 130 - even for a normal amateur who don’t race - I felt the huge difference so I had to get some new boots for the next day. The angle and the way you have to ski with racing boots is just not comfortable for a holiday skier. The only way I could ski those boot was max attack and my leg muscles simply isn’t strong enough for that -:) So I have the greatest respect for professional skiers and the hard training that they have to do....and I am pretty sure that the so called racing boot that I tried from the shop would have felt like slippers for Lindsey

    here's some advice for jr. racers. Try different things. set your boots with 0 cuff angle. then try +1, +2, and +3 cuff angle. then go back to 0 cuff angle. then try -1, -2 and -3 cuff angle. get a feel for the effect each set up has, what it can do and can't do. experiment till you find a set up(or 2) that works for your style of skiing. same with forward lean, footbed height and ramp angle. you will learn what doesn't work and what does. once you get your boots dialed in, then you can focus on your technique and ski set up.

    Used to have Technica race boots(size 9 and I wore size 10.5 shoes) and Dynastar Omeglass 63s. Boots angled out as far as they'd go and a slight heel wedge. Omg what a carving combo. Also, what a painful way to spend a day skiing.

    Really want to know more about how the canting specifically affects the aggressiveness. Tipping in, less aggressive; tipping out, more aggressive, but how or why? If there's another video about it, more in-depth, that would be awesome!

      Antony Wang I have been a professional boot fitter for 40 years. The boot specialist only addressed leg alignment in a very limited way. Most high end boots offer boot cuff alignment. He did not get into canting which would correct and level the boot sole to compensate for any natural missalinement of the skiers legs. At the US ski team level boot soles are sometimes ground to an angle to correct the stance to neutral. Any good boot fitter can check your stance and alignment. My Nordica boot sales representative was a boot fitter for the US ski team so I have had the opportunity to learn from the best. There was so much other information not presented. Custom molded foot beds to align the foot properly inside the boot. What boot liner is used? It it standard Head issue or does she use something like a Zip Fit custom liner? I expected a lot more from her expert? I could go on and on. For real good advice check out Patriot Footbeds on UA-cam. This guy makes very good boot fitting videos.

    This is a very generalized overview- go to a good boot fitter if you want to get your boots dialed. Ask some racing coaches where they recommend you go. First you need good foot beds, as the ones that come with the boots are usually pretty worthless. Then you need to align the boot, generally so your shins are ever so slightly inward (less aggressive) when skis are flat. If your shins are too far inside, you will ski knock kneed when skis are flat and require too much movement to get edge angles. If shins are to the outside, you will ski more bowlegged when skis are flat and will over edge too easily. If you are just off by a little bit, you might get by with cuff canting and maybe a wedge under the foot bed, but beyond that you will have to get the bases ground which is pricey, but worth more than a new pair of skis as far as improving your skiing. The best advice they had was wearing Cattracks. I cringe when I see people walking through the parking lot with unprotected boots.

      @@LindseyVonn With all due respect, the name of the video is "Science Corner," clearly it should have been "Information for beginners." Love your skiing and would love to hear more about materials the boots are made of, how does flex change with temperature if at all, lean angles maybe if they change from venue to venue, how tight do you have your buckles and how do you deal with shin-bang if you get it. What's the reason for shims on the sole of the boots? What kind of liners do you use and how do you mold them? Spoilers, do you use them and if you do why. Seriously, spoilers are a damn mystery to me.

    Surprised there's no mention of sanding down especially for the Head boots. Wore B2s for a long time, stretched them so many times, never got them right. Great control but often went home before others as my feet were hurting too much. When I was done racing I learned the B series have thicker walls so that you can sand them down to fit wider feet or bumps. Would have changed those years sooo much if I had known.

    Are your boots smooth on the bottom because you have to get them at the right angle in the binding? Or is it because you are so much more aggressive on your skis than someone just skiing recreationally? Do you wear men's boots since you ski with men's skis? How does the ski boot angle effect what the ski tech does in terms of preparing your skis?

    • @skitalkdotcom
      @skitalkdotcom 5 років тому +2

      Lets take a step back, a true race boot like what Lindsey is in is a solid lug boot which makes it easier to cant, the lateral adjustment that they are referring to. The yellow sole is to adjust for any height difference in the lug once the canting is done. The reason for the cat tracks is to keep the sole as smooth as possible which gives a better (and safer) interface between the boot and the binding. There are mny "recreational" skier who ski in a race boot because of the low volum and increased performance. There are not really men's or women's race boots, they are unisex. As far as the lateral adjustment of the boot (canting), that is completely different to how the edges are set up on the ski.

Her best is advice is, "if you are not a racer get the comfiest, warmest boots." The boot tech says to get bigger boots for warmer fit and Lindsey agrees. Most people watching this video are not racers but if you go into your local ski shop they will fit boots like your are a racer and tell you to wear a super thin sock. Then you will have painfully tight boots and your feet will freeze. Ridiculous!

    • @Andrei_K1G1K
      @Andrei_K1G1K 5 років тому +1

      This is actually a good question that could have been covered in the video. What about canting? What do you do for it?

    • @thomasmedeiros5722
      @thomasmedeiros5722 5 років тому

      He did not distinguish between Boot cuff angle which adjust the cuff of the boot to the angle of your leg and Canting which makes the boot sole level and neutral. This is accomplished by either grinding the boot sole to correct your stance , adding a canted sole pad to correct the stance or placing a plastic can’t under the binding. All of this must be done correct as it can effect the release of the binding especially at the toe in a twisting release. Binding companies are concerned that the corrected angle of the boot sole could interfere with release. Ski racers favor correct leg / boot alignment and use ridiculously high release settings and are not going to sue a binding manufacturer. Some ski shops may not want to make any modifications if fear of legal litigation. Just speaking from decades of working in a Ski Shop.
