How a Dumpster Diver Created a $1 Billion Empire with His Last $0.50

  • Patagonia started with a mountain climber-turned-dumpster diver who lived off 50 cents a day.
It never cared about being cool or maximizing profits. Instead, it's always focused on being socially and environmentally responsible.
And yet, it's become a billion-dollar company and a status symbol for the biggest and richest companies in the world.
This is the story of Patagonia.

I was homeless outside 3 years and I got my first van for 1000 in payments, I made it into a home and lived in there 2 years, sold it for 3000 because it was a camper. Then realized this was a good job. Since then I've had 12 vans and worked my way up to busses, and I own a 2016 bus converted to an rv now worth about 40,000$. I haven't had a real job or house in 8 years now and i just turned 26 years old. Im still buying and selling so the stories not over yet

I live in Edinburgh where the wee film in Scotland was filmed years ago. It's so weird that he just took Rugby shirts and sold them as climbing shirts and I've notices some surf companies sell rugby shirts as surf shirts and I wonder if it came from this?
He made a big mistake not simply using British suppliers as Rugby is a tough sport but a working-class sport and back then you could buy high-quality Rugby shirts very cheap from the UK. What would Asians know about making Rugby shirts back in those days.
There were massive clothing factories in the UK back then and then all set up and making high-quality rugby shirts and he'd have known exactly what he was getting. He'd have had a huge choice of colours as every little town in the UK has its own Rugby club and shirts in different colours.

...If one looks up the history of snow skiing, the answer may be that in Vermont in 1979 a land mark case for juvenile paraplegia in a ski accident set the precedent as ‘mobile youth’ paraplegia was cost prohibitive at the time
...the judge ruled that if an extreme sport lifestyle was made accessible to and marketed to novices via infrastructure like roads/busses, ‘new technology’ (like new fangled skis) targeted marketing, that the owner operator had to take X amount of responsibility for the damages
It created a fire storm in the media that crossed the country over night affecting insurance gauging and land use policy
If one has ever been an official representative in a case one learns first hand the true meaning of losing a case and being forced to settle for the sheer logistic of being ‘buried in paperwork’ as any more -financially independent law firm can usually bury anyone who can’t afford to keep up with required legal requests
