    Tyseley's two double chimney Castles 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe & 7029 Clun Castle charge up the Lickey Incline with the Welsh Marchess railtour, Birmingham-Hereford-Gloucester-Birmingham. The Castle duo work their might up the two mile 1in37 incline hauling 10 coaches plus a GUV and a Class 47 diesel locomotive which was doing very little, thus hauling a dead weight of up to roughly 450 to 500 tonnes!
    As a GWR fan to witness and film this fine spectacle, I could not of been more impressed. Well worth rhe six hour wait to see that.
    Thank you Vintage Trains and Tyseley!

      @@GreatWestern175 Yes, I wanted to try the Lickey at some point, I was booked on the Castles Up the Lickey with 5043, but that was cancelled as this was moved to the date it was due. As it got diverted via the Lickey from it’s usual Welsh Marches Express route, due to Oxford-Didcot, it did reopen yesterday though, I thought to give it a go. Due to severe weather from between Tewkesbury and Worcestershire Parkway and Stoke junction, we didn’t have a heavy run at it as speed restriction was 45mph, we only had 2 miles to run up at it. We started at 54mph and crested at 18mph. It was a huge slog with the heaviest load Vintage Trains had provided for 10 years. But Double Heading with a heavy load makes it mad up the Lickey.

    Great stuff. I still think your steam videos are the best. I was at Eckington loop and the pair passed in the middle of a thunderstorm with torrential rain. Could scarcely see or hear the locos. Quite an experience

    Impressive but if you want to see a Castle working, have a look on youtube for Nunney Castle on Hemerdon with 8 vehicles and no diesel on the back. Now that is a castle at work at its maximum. By comparison, these two were coasting along in the full knowledge of diesel back up. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the castle railtours but double-heading and a diesel on the back does not give the genuine steam experience, but then in a changing world, we can hardly expect that. We are grateful for what is on offer.

      Well, I think Vintage Trains were going to run the train without a diesel at the rear, but bearing in mind it had been up to four weeks of dry hot weather, meaning steam locomotives working hard would would cause sparks from their chimneys to land by the lineside vegetation and cause an inferno thus delaying other service trains and getting railtour companies into trouble which they don't need. Thats one reason why diesel locos are at the rear of trains during hot summers unsurprisingly. Plus also Vintage Trains (or Tyseley us enthusiasts call them) have been having a diesel locomotive at the rear for shunting purposes and for insurance purposes because they don't wish to cause any delays should their runs fall back in time and costing them alot of money which they are very strapped on. Might sound hockey, but thats the way it is. Me filming 5029 over the Devon Banks unassisted in 2014 demonstrates what a single chimney Castle can do.

      That was the equivalent of 14 coaches, no steam loco is taking that up the Lickey without being either double-headed or banked. Speed on the bank still dropped to 18mph at the top so they were definitely working.

    If only it had been 'Clifford Castle', 'King Edward'. and 'Woolston Grange'. That would have been something. CEW

    Would the diesel at the rear be giving maybe even a small push ? They look well

    • @GreatWestern175
      @GreatWestern175  11 місяців тому

      No, it wasn't assisting. It was initially used for assistance over the Welsh Marches due to high fire risk due to weeks of prolonged dry hot weather. But it had rained over the Lickey Incline therefore the diesel loco remained a dead weight meaning the Castles could work hard out.

    I wonder what the total draw bar horse power they were exerting?

      @MySteaming Рік тому

      I know that BR 2-10-0 locos exerted in excess of 2,000 draw bar horse power when they were in service...
