Agreed. Let's remember the founding fathers bravery in declaring independence, and the people who lost their lives for that righteous cause. And take lessons from their insight, such as George Washington's decision to vaccinate our side, which very likely won the war by keeping our troops healthy while the British lost many thousands to smallpox, and encouraged us to go on to do such great things as eradicate smallpox in our new country, and other diseases throughout the coming centuries (polio, etc. -- and hopefully Covid19 now).

Off topic but I had to celebrate. No tomatoes for the last two years because of heat, this year I initially encouraged a lot of foliar growth (goat tea) and then partial shade screens and very fine misters (no mold, hot and dry here). After a couple of weeks from mid 90s to 107 and still lots of blossoming and pollinated fruit developing! Heirloom, Marzano and Roma. I'm amazed and so happy.

Since you mentioned flowers to attract pollinators: Last winter was so mild my sage overwintered and I was able to harvest it for cooking right through winter. Then in the Spring it put out a lot of flowers and I decided to just enjoy the flowers while they lasted. They stayed for a long time and I haven't seen so many honeybees in one place in my more than 40 years gardening! When the very first flowers opened on other things the bees were already there and ready to visit every bloom. When the sage flowers were spent I cut everything back pretty hard and a beautiful new crop of leaves came, but the honeybees disappeared. Lots of wasps and other things pollinate the garden, but now I know that honeybees really, really love sage.

I'm in South Texas. The almanac says Dec. 23, which made me chuckle. In the last ten years it's been cold in december maybe three of those years. The last several years it's been in the 70's on Christmas day. We can grown ALMOST year round here. Except, of course, for plants that don't do well in high heat. Apples, for example, are a problem for us down here.

Excellent- Sept 15... it’s July 7. I have time, as you suggest, for some varieties of beans (in shade), basil, cucumbers, summer squash, Swiss chard, sweet corn (with mulch) and zinnias. I’m going to also try cosmos, lavender sunflowers, black eyed Susan, wild butterfly mix, herbs and maybe watermelon because I couldn’t do an early crop. Thanks!

Happy 4th to you and everyone!!!! :). Quick question. I'm feeling silly asking you this, but here it goes. Can I still plant potatoes and sweet potatoes before the first frost date for southern California? :) Thanks a bunch in advance:). Everyone have fun and be safe out there!!! :) Please remember to bring your pets in tonight!! They get scared with those fireworks. :)

I'm sure you can. Look up growing potatoes in a 5 gallon food grade bucket. If frost is forecasted, bring the bucket in. I purchased 4 and am hopeful I can do potatoes year round. Florida, USA 🇺🇸 😎 🌴🌊🌴

We live by boom city! Was horrible this year for a couple weeks prior! We all passed out on the 4th! 😂🤣😂 Calming vitamins help & my old dog had a Thunder coat that worked well for him! I need 1 in Shepard size now so our big guy doesn't use up all the grandkids blankets! Lol If they are wrapped up with him he does well! 1 leaves his side, he freaks about their safety away from him! Lol❤ Trying to add a new bed this year. I think my son just put a big hole in the front yard!😂🤣😂 He doesn't work that dirt for me, we are up a creek! Lol Just watering, weeding & trying to stay in top of harvesting strawberries, self heal, etc is wearing me out! Lol My son got some really good spinach seeds though! We nibble right off the plant! First spring growth tasted more like candy! Lol

That's cute. Where I live, cannot sow anything above the ground until July ;if I am lucky. Last year, was still sowing in late August and will likely be the case again this year. Nights are still below 10C and will be for another 2 weeks.... all I can sow are cool hardy plants until then. This week is cool, nights barely above 10C, week after is hardly better.
We get Alaskan summers here... by the type you reach the beach, it's already snowing.

@@morganb1979 Carrots; never had any luck. They always to short. So no pro on carrots. Radish never had a problem with them, always come out great. I usually go for the Mirabeau, Stela or Scarlet Globe family. Good soil and water them late of the day if no rain and ground becomes dry. I really don't bother to space them out, but I try not to crowd them to much. As soon the red bulge out above ground. I start to thin them out when harvest them. As soon I harvest the last one. I replant them and start a new harvest day. I usually do this three times and call it the end of harvest. I plant them as soon I start planting my garden first time.

We have a cat whose owner lets it out at night so it can tear up my plant beds and poop in them. I tried dozens of deterrents. None worked. Our park manager suggested setting sticky traps (for mice) on the beds. Worked pretty good. The cat couldn't get it off his feet and hobbled home. His furious owner went to the park manager to complain and instead of getting me in trouble SHE was threatened with a fine if the cat damaged other peoples gardens in the future. I would urge caution with a wild animal though. They have no owner to rescue them and no one wants to be known as the village bunny-killer!

We have to remember that the package gives you days to your first fruits. The harvest for veggies such as squash and cukes comes over a two month or so timeframe, so you have to figure that in. For those then, you'd want to plant the seeds about 4 months before your first frost. Even before the frost, it gets cold and the sun gets lower. The plants are going to lose a lot of their vitality in that last month leading up to the first frost date. Cucurbits especially don't like the cold...

Thanks! I've been thinking I need to look this up. We have pretty mild winters - where it drops to 30 degrees for about 14 days over the winter on different days or weeks. I'm thinking I could grow some cold weather crops in hoop houses - maybe some broccoli? Would you grow those from seed a few weeks before the frost date in the ground? Or would you start them inside? Is there enough sun in the winter for crops like broccoli, kale, lettuce? And you're so right about basil being great pollinator attracting plants! Mine is covered with bees during the day!!!
