- Back in the workshop after a big hiatus. Would like to say a big thank you to everyone that has talked to me down the beach this past 7 months, been having a tough time and your kind words have really helped. This video is a start to finish repair and prep job on a Green ammonite nodule from Stonebarrow Charmouth.

Hi buddy good to see you on UA-cam again. I saw you in the distance busy chatting and you had what looked like a nice pint of cider in your hand. I did'nt want to interrupt. It was really good fossil fest better than last years for sure. I like the way you work the stones usually a subtle slope towards the ammonite. Maybe see you on the beach sometime.
You should have come and said hi! Was a nice bitter! Next year It’ll be nice to have a stall. Some really good stuff for sale in the sellers tent this year
Your not talking to yourself your talking to us in the future! I'm here enjoying the video laughing away 😊
A big welcome back from all your friends
Nice to have you back on my friend
Alive! He is alive!
I've collected fossil bearing rock for a few years but I'm only beginning to work on cleaning up the fossils. Your videos are excellent and I'm learning a lot. Thanks so much for the informative videos.
Thank you for the kind words, I’ve just got a new workshop and fossil shop which I get the keys for on the 1st of August, really looking forward to setting it all up and get to making loads of new content. Will be nice to have a place where I can run courses from too, thinking two days, day on the beach then a day in the workshop using all the latest kit.
He’s back and sharing the tricks of the trade - smoothing and then a stippled finish to the matrix! He’s a very naughty boy but we love him!
Love you Paul, was so nice to see you at fossil fest, missed your happy face!
@@TheFossilAcademy Missed my face - you should take better aim 🤣. Maybe get telescopic sights
Thinking of doing a few trips soon further afield north coast maybe if you fancy it, I’ll drive
@@TheFossilAcademy oh yes
After watching your videos I've decided to get myself a Dremel 290 and some tips and start my journey on learning how to prep some of my finds from a few years ago. I've also booked a log cabin on the outskirts of Lyme Regis for the last week of September to hopefully find some more cool bits. Glad to see you back making videos and I hope you feel a bit better each day. ✌️
How are you getting on with the Dremel? Done much with it yet?
@@TheFossilAcademy I've had a little go but I think I need some better subjects to try on. Hopefully I'll find some in September. It's very therapeutic yet harder than you make it look. Hope you're doing good and I look forward to the next video ✌️
That prep was amazing! I`m happy to see you back on it again.
Great to see you back. It’s ok not to be ok Dan and just remember everything will be ok in the end. Amazing video again
Great to see you back Dan

Hi Dan it’s great to have you back! I spoke to you on Instagram very early on when I started prepping my own fossils. I like to think I’ve come a long way since being inspired by your old tutorials I found a while back! Sorry to hear you have had a tough time, I wish you and your family the best.
Cheers dude, really appreciate that :)
Was a surprise to see this pop up! Very glad to see your back making videos again:) And I’m sorry for those last months, hopefully the next ones are better for you:)
Cheers for the kind words Ben, onwards and upwards :)
Great video Dan. Sorry to hear you’ve had a rough time recently. If you ever fancy a weekend fossil hunt please give me a shout 😊
Great to see you back and sorry to hear of your struggles. I really can empathise with much of what you said.
Anyway, this video was incredibly timely as I’ve got a number of specimens in need of repair. I feel much more confident to grapple with them now. Looking forward to seeing more of you. 👍

Awesome video mate! Did a cracking job on that piece!
Beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi, so glad you're back and so sorry you've had such a rough time. Great to hear that ammonites are keeping you sane. It was a pleasure to watch the video as we were looking out for one from you for ages :-) and it's such a great timing as we're coming to Charmouth on our annual few days during half term in 3 weeks so now looking forward to it even more! And staying in the beach and looking for fossils does our heads some magic too! Look after yourself.
Sorry for the late reply, how did you get on over the holidays?
Great restoration, very cleaned work👍 wich type of ammonite is
It's so amazing that you reveal the flaring open of the shell. I don't think I've seen that in the ammonite youtubers that just smash the shells out of the nodules. Makes me cringe to see all the shell fragments that come off when they pry the split nodules apart. Very nice work. Have you ever tried to get rid of all the rock backing, and leave the shell completely revealed?
Thank you for the kind words. I really like leaving them in the matrix, sometimes I’ll take ammonites out completely but its usually by accident when cracks form while prepping! I try to get them to look like they are sitting on the sea bed like they would have been all those years ago. With certain ammonites I’ll take the shell off to reveal the calcite structure below, if the shell looks good i will sometimes leave it.
Is there a difference between one side and another? For instance, is one side kind of flat where the other might have a deep depression in the older, smaller part?
RE completely removing the shell from the matrix I've read they aren't that stable so the matrix is needed for support.
I do like how you create a cup-shaped depression surrounding the shell in the matrix.

It’s me the guy you saw yesterday
For someone new, any way you could do a video of how to Dremel a trilobite out of shale? I’m not able to get an air scribe but have a zoic Dremel. Love the channel by the way. New sub!
Hey! 27:45 - the texture around the shell is very impressive! Was this part sanded or did the pen do it all?😮
All pen work, smooth it off like in the time lapse just before and then jab it with the pen over and over, really easy to achieve and it looks really nice
