Make Your Own Plastic Toys (with silicone and corn starch)

  • I recently discovered this really neat thing you can do with corn starch and silicone...make rubber toys! ‪@TheKingofRandom‬ shared a video a while back that got me inspired to try it out! The possibilities of what you could make are endless and are for kids and adults alike. My favourite rubber molds were the phone case, rubber mallet, custom cozy, and the bouncy balls. This would also make a perfect quarantine project for kids!

I've seen dozens of these videos, but yours was the first one that actually sparked the creative part of my somewhat addled brain. Thanks for being my plastic-making muse!

Question... Can I make somewhat of a rubber clay with this? Like, when this dries, I saw "Warning: Super Bouncy" is it rubbery and stretchy? Could I perhaps use less cornstarch and go for a smoother consistency than play-doh if I want something more rubbery and stretchy and bendable? Like, if I want something that is more like one of those rubber toys that are incredibly squishy and stretchy? Something like a stretch toy. The silicon and corn starch made balls gave me hope for that due to them being bouncy.

How do we control the hardness and softness of the end product of the dry silicone? Like for example I need my phone case to be more softer and more like hard rubber casing?

Very cool, is it possible to manipulate the material in such a way that it doesn't leave those obvious playdoe like connection points? I wonder if it would help with something like a phone case if you depressed it's sides with something flat? At any rate, I can work with it over the price of molding silicone, it would give a cool grungy look to robot models I think.

Love this! I wonder will it stick to already cured silicon? For example can it be used to decorate a silicon phone case?

They make food grade specific silicone

  • @shannontang2445

I see that you are using 100% silicone, but the bottle is for tub and tile. Wouldn’t you need food grade silicone if you are giving it to babies to play with ? I’m just concerned if a baby is trying to chew on it

  • @d-rockanomaly9243

Jokes aside you shouldn't make kids toys out of silicone. It's a literal construction adhesive, also used to lubricate things like car parts comments used to make caulking. Almost every form of silicone it would be a terrible thing to let a child play with. They do make specific food great silicone though.
