    I only discovered you today. I love your fresh, calm, honest approach - some UA-camrs really try to be actors which I find quite distracting - I want art information, not a soap opera.

    Great review and video quality and voice narration Smoothie77. With the introduction of the Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black, newer batches of the regular (blue-painted) Staedtler Mars Lumograph now has a higher percentage of graphite, so that even the 8B (and 9B) has a high graphite shine. No more solid black w/o the graphite sheen! Preserve your older stock of the original blue Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils. If you want an 8B with no graphite shine, you MUST now use the new Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black pencil.

      Thanks very much, I had heard the new Lumograph's had stopped using carbon in the 7-8B pencils, thanks for confirming that for me, I like the fact they have done that, it gives us a true set of graphite pencils and the option to use the carbon mix if we need.

    I have these and think they're really good.
    Really smooth to use.
    Even the harder B , 2B etc are very dark. Very good for shading.

      Thanks, you're welcome! Staedtler's are fairly common pencils, so it should be easy to get hold of a set, More drawings on the way soon :)

    Thank you for the review and now I am going to get me some Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black Pencils. I don't mind the sheen, but I love my peel and sketch charcoal pencils from general pencils Germany so it could be fun for me to play around with pencils without the shine. Thank you

    A little tip for broken leads my maths teacher taught me was to tap the pencil on end hardly against the table and then sharpen it, doesnt always work but it does help.

    Hi smoothie! Yes, I have a pack of these and I too THOROUGHLY recommend Staedtler pencils as they are used by the top artists and the Germans are among the best for quality! A great guide thank you :)

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому +1

      Hi Agui007, totally agree, you can't go wrong with German pencils, both Staedtler and Faber Castell make some of the best pencils/art materials on the market, also Lyra pencils are German made, haven't tried them yet, but I have heard good reports about them.

    That regular lumograph 8B must be old, cause the old 8B and EE was a similar formula to the new lumograph black, and the new 8B-12B are regular graphite now

      I was at Blick art tonight looking for that and the eraser pencil I see you use. I can't find the Mars Lumograph, but I did find the eraser pencil. I mentioned to my husband I had seen your video on them, and that I wanted those specific ones. He said, "That art guy on youtube again?!?! He is causing you to buy an awful lot." LOL He was just laughing and teasing. He is very encouraging about it in reality. :-P I am going to just buy the pencils on Amazon.

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  7 років тому

      LOL, Apologies to you husband :) I hope you manage to get a set of Staedtlers, they are a worthwhile addition to you drawing kit, I'm surprised Blick art didn't stock them.

    • @radicallyforjesus
      @radicallyforjesus 7 років тому +1

      Ha...My sweet husband was the one who suggested we go there at all. He doesn't mind, he just likes to tease. He picks up things for his model planes/tanks there occasionally. Blick didn't have a few other things too, like extra blades for sharpeners and so forth. I guess somethings they only stock online. But they do have a lot in general and are fun to go too. We went to Hobby Lobby right beside it and I picked off a couple things there too. Having those store side by side is kinda awesome. LOL

    excellent review..But i think new lumagraph black line is more behave like charcoal means higher grades like 8b is smearing like charcoal(like PITT OIL based from Fabercastell )but regular lumograph blue 8b is real carbon it doesn't smear,it behaves like wolffs carbon(indeed superior pencil)

    Thank you for your last 2 videos re. the barn drawing and Staedtler pencils. I have had a stab at the drawing which I think looks OK but not a patch on yours of course. but I am improving . I would like to hear what you think of charcoal pencils sometime when you have a minute.

      Hi steve, yes I can hear it too, just listened to my vid on my ipad with and without headphones and there is a slight wirling noise, haven't a clue what it is?? maybe an issue with my camera mic? but don't worry you haven't got a faulty ipad, i can hear it too.

    I got a question ! Can I blend the Mars lumo graph black pencils with the normal graphite pencils ? I mean suppose there is a really dark area and a really light area to shade and the boundary is blended in ..mixed I mean . ..so if I use the dark area by the Black pencils ....can I or can I not blend it with a lighter color graphite pencil ? So that it looks like the dark area is exactly as dark and the boundary is exactly blended in.

    Thanks for this review. I bought my set back in January and I love them. (My standard sketching pencil is the Staedtler Mars Lumograph - so this felt like a natural addition to my collection). I actually asked +Owings Art to do a review on them, and I think that possibly he will, but you beat him to it! So, well done you!

    In my country I think our pencils our fake..9b is like 6b press hard and it shines

    • @tiagodagostini
      @tiagodagostini 5 років тому +2

      The B scale is not a stndard. You can call 9 b whtever mix you want, as long as your own 8B is more clay than the 9B .. but when compared to other brand.. you can have a 9B that is harder than a 2B of other brands. NOTHING wrong there.. there is no standard to follow.

    I always thought the first pencil, just a metal rod, the kind used in the middle ages, was made of lead and that's where that came from.

      I have some old HB lumographs and they shine like the newer ones, its really only when carbon is added that the shine goes.

  • @BuntstiftKunst

    :) :) :) Thank you a lot for this demonstration. Its great for me. As you know I love to draw with graphite. So I am struggling a lot with the shine. I tried mixed media with charcoal, which is too powdery for me and I don´t get fine details. Than I tried cretacolor nero, which doesn´t blend at all and you cannot erase it (buts its good for eyes). I also tried some carbon pencils, but I could´t get rich black results. I will try those now, think I will mix them with my graphite pencils. Dark areas don´t need much blending and erasing techniques anyway, so I think they good be really useful for me. Thanks for all your effort! You should mention your patreon account, nothing wrong to earn a few dollars ;)

      :D You're very welcome! its a pleasure to make these videos for everyone, These pencils will be ideal for you, especially if you don't like graphite shine, they do feel strange at first due to the carbon, but you soon get use to that, the 2B and 4B bridge the gap nicely between carbon and graphite.You are right, i should mention my Patreon account...I will do soon:) Thanks again for your kind words:)
