    Great video. I started sketching a few years ago but proceeded on to other interests but now you have inspired me to take it up again. By the way I love those water pencils. I've never seen them before and I'd love to give them a go with my landscapes. Again thanks heaps for the inspiration.

      You're welcome Alexander, I must mention that the new Steadtler lumograph may of changed the 6B and 8B to regular graphite, they bought out a new range of pencils called "Mars Lumograph black" these are now the carbon mix pencils that Staedtler make, I have a review of them on my channel if you're interested.

    Love your work and you have inspired me back into the art world with Graf drawing as a beginner you have sharpened my skills in no time I could only imagine if I was on your patron subscription I would be even further advanced. I love those pencils and have been looking into the Derwent brand. I'm currently enjoying your Staedtler Lumograph black and Mars Lumograph series. I have tried Faber and Castell 9000s as well I see the difference between you were explaining. Anyways thanks and I'm honored to have found you.

    Thank you so much Smoothie77 for your informative video and the fact that Staedtler leave no shine at all! The 7b and darker pencils ( 8b , 9b,10b ,11b ) from steadlar used to contain a portion of carbon along with the graphite . But they later changed that and made them pure graphite pencils too . They then rebranded the carbon and graphite mix pencils as the Mars lumograph black pencils
    Please reply if anyone has a steadlar (ee) pencil , and would love to know where you bought them

      Hi Lineke, glad you like the Staedtler pencils, the 7 and 8B are really more like carbon pencils, they are great for getting darkest darks much more than regular graphite but they don't smudge quite as much, I hope you make a video with you using them, that would be great to see :)

    Thanks for making these videos smoothie. They are very educational especially for us noobs. Thanks for the info on the Steadler pencils that don't shine. I have a set of them on the way to try out. If you haven't heard of it before check out the General Kimberly 9xxb pencils. As it is supposed to be one of the darkest pencils out there and also has jo shine. I have one as well and will compare it to the Steadlers and see which is the darkest.
    I also got myself some of the Koh l Noor woodless pencils you showed in this vid and must say I an impressed. I must try some of the Koh l Noor regular graphite pencils down the road. As the thier woodless pencils are very smooth. I currently use the Derwents, which I do like as well. They are the only brand my local art store sells individually. I bought them before I did any research into what were good brands when I started drawing.

      I live in the US and the Koh-L-Noor graphite pencils are extremely hard to find here. I can get the woodless and the color pencils they make no problem. But for some reason the normal graphite drawing pencils are impossible to find. Even from the big art suppliers here. I will have to get them off of eBay when the time comes

    Great review, just what I need to help me decide what to go for. I'm a beginner in this, so it's like going down a rabbit hole.
    I have a couple of coloured pencil sets (WH Smith and another). I have quite a few mechanical pencils- but nothing as big as 5.6mm - I've been "humming and erring" about whether to go for Koh E Noor or the more expensive and heavy Kaweco. Any thoughts on that conundrum?
    I have a small selection of different hardness pencils.
    I have been playing around with Watercolours for about 6 months, inspired by another UA-camr (Mr. Shibasaki). I might try a bit of acrylic painting next. Prior to that, about 3 years ago I got into using micro pens for Zentangle, which I found very therapeutic when going through chemotherapy in 2017. Admittedly, the zeal for Zentangle sketching was fueled by a cocktail of chemicals which I had to take for 6 months.
    However, I have all these pencils that I really should use them. I previously used them for technical sketches: pipework, electrical, air conditioning type system drawings; which I used to draw in-situ before converting to a Visio drawing (a basic CAD type software). However, I'm not in the field of work anymore, I have more time on my hands to experiment with different art/drawing/painting.
    I mainly do this as a new hobby and to try and express myself artistically, rather than technically. I find it compliments my interest and practice of Tai Chi. I'd love to be able to illustrate Tai Chi postures or group of players in a park, but when I attempt to draw human figures or say hands, legs, faces etc. it all goes a bit Pete Tong.
    What do you suggest that I could do to start developing the basic skills to give me a foundation to work from? I love your videos, but they seem way beyond me at the moment, although I'm willing to have a go and learn what I can.
    PS. I'd love any basic set of charcoal pencils that are going (I'm only 4 years late to the party......)

    Wow, thank you so much for doing this video. I've been looking for a good 'materials review' sort of video so I can see some comparisons of materials for drawing and skethcing. I recently started back into my artwork after decades of not practicing. I was more into paint and sculpture and never used to do much drawing, but am absolutely rabid about it now. I've been working with Staedtler graphite pencils and I can't agree with you more about the quality.
    I also have noticed your use of the Tombow fine tip eraser and am eager to find one of those locally (I'm in Canada). Thanks again for a wonderful comparison video. It was really helpful and informative. I've learned so much from your videos since discovering them a couple days ago. Very much looking forward to viewing them all.
    I do have a question about your blending techniques. I was wondering why you choose to use a paper towel for blending and not a chamois? I don't disagree with the choice, but I'm wondering if you find it works better for you (you like the visual result better) than other materials, or if the draw of it is more to do with the paper towel being readily available and convenient? Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
    Take care!

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому +2

      Hi Meredith, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, first, I have to say, the Tombow eraser is a "must have" its the finest eraser on the market as far as I'm aware, if you like fine detail the Tombow eraser is definitely the one to get.Regarding blending, I have seen other artists using a chamois, I'm embarrassed to say I have never tried one, the reason being, paper towel is as you said, readily available, also easy to replace when it gets covered in graphite. the artists I have seen using chamois seem to require a smoother finish for portraits, as I'm mainly a landscape artist the paper towel is ideal for creating patchier blended areas for trees, rocks, and under-drawings for woodland scenes etc, I can also get very smooth blends when I need them, also I find the quality and texture of the drawing paper plays a large part in the final look of a blended area too. Now you have mentioned chamois, I'm keen to try one myself, just to see if it would make a big difference, thank again, that was a great question:)

    • @elaeria
      @elaeria 8 років тому +1

      Oh I don't meant to embarrass you. I think the amazing thing about art is not necessarily in using the brand name tools, but finding the ones that work best for your style and technique. As you say, being a landscape artist you have an appreciation for how a tool creates the right texture for you. :) I was just curious if it was more related to your technique and style (which I greatly admire, by the way) or if it was a convenience thing.
      My budget isn't very big for my art supplies, so I am a big supporter of using what is at hand. In the end, if it gets the results you want it doesn't matter if it's a brand name product or the stick you found at the side of the road. :D
      At any rate, thank you so much for your response. I certainly appreciate that you interact with your commenters so readily. Here's my third attempt ever at drawing a tree: instagram.com/p/BJWM5dxD--v/?taken-by=yarnpr0n ! Very much looking forward to applying your instruction to my first attempts at landscapes.
      All good things! M

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому

      :) its ok you didn't really embarrass me :) I agree finding tools that work best, is better than just buying big brand names, I'm on a limited budget too, although a chamois wont break the bank, I am very curious to try one, I might start looking for a stick at the side of the road too :) (why not?) hey, if it works.....Thank you for sending a link to your tree drawing! it looks great! trees are my favourite things to draw, you did a great job, I love the way you left the roots exposed. Thanks again for you kind words Meredith, much appreciated, happy drawing:)

    Did you find out about the Staedtler triplus micro? They do NOT bend and come in 0.5,0.7 and 1.3mm leads! They are awesome!!! The wobbling tips are annoying me as well! The rotring Tikky do not retract the metal tip and I keep on buying these (just because...they last you a lifetime, but...you know...) PLUS the leads are darker than any other that I ever tried. (Have to be the tikky ones!!! Rotring has other pencils that DO wobble and other Leads that are NOT as dark an smoothe!)

    Thanks for the video. I think the Staedtler 8B doesn't have graphite or has reduced graphite. It may be using some black pigment (often made by burning something...) and clay, ie. like the black colour pencils. I just checked with my Staedtler 8B and Derwent Coloursoft black, the cores look similar on the pencil and on paper, and also feel similar as I draw. So if you are a purist you may not want to use Staedtler 8B in your graphite pencil drawing.
    BTW, I am still looking for pencils I like. Derwent is a bit soft, the lines are not crisp, and difficult to get a sharp point. Koh-I-Noor is alright but quite scratchy and so interfere with the flow of the hand as I draw. I can't get Faber Castell in the shops where I live...

    Thank You for this. Much needed for beginners. I've watched so many videos on sketching and/or drawing with pencils but no one explains what to use and why. So, I appreciate your taking out time for such an informative video on materials :-). Are you going to do another prize drawing for pencils for 2016?

    What are the unique advantages of tinted graphite pencils over just graphite on the one hand and colored pencils on the other?

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому

      I wouldn't say there are any advantages of one or the other, as its subjective to personal choice, I like using both, but lean more toward Graphitint because they are very well suited to landscape drawing, the graphite mixed with colour has a nice muted effect that looks natural, whereas coloured pencils can be very bright and need layering to achieve the same natural look that Graphitint has, but if you use them for drawing flowers, butterflies, fruit still lifes, or anything brightly coloured, I would opt for regular coloured pencils.

      Graphite is lighter than charcoal, charcoal is black and smudges easy, I would suggest you try both to see which you like best.

    I dont understand something. So you have the Staedtler "Mars Lumograph" pencils and they dont shine, well I also have them but they do have a shine, really strange, but I also bought "Mars Lumograph black" pencils and these do not have a shine. Can it be that they changed the production?

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому +1

      It's only the 7B and 8B in the lumograph range that don't shine, all the others do have shine.

      @miakamo 8 років тому

      Ah thank you for your answer. I have 4H, 2H and 9B of those so I was surprised to see that the 9B shines, so I should have bought 8B XD

    • @smoothie77drawingpainting
      @smoothie77drawingpainting  8 років тому

      Can i ask... is your 8B part of a new set? The reason i ask is because since Staedtler bought out the new Lumograph black set, i think they may have changed the old 7-8B pencils back to regular graphite.

    I wanted to buy a set of Derwent pencils H-9B. But in a store a man said "don't buy them, they keep breaking. The quality is not what it used to be". A week later I bought them anyway. When I opened a case two had already been broken. When I finished sharpening 5 of 12 were 1,5 cm shorter than others because they kept beaking. Shame. After all Derwent is the name on this market.
