As a brazilian, its very interesting to see the part where she mentions south america isnt considered part of 'the west' even thought we speak european languages and are christian, because we arent white. Its funny because here in brazil people absolutely refer to the country as part of the 'western world', and that goes together with most brazilians considering themselves white. This reminds me of a quote of a brazilian educator and philosopher, Paulo Freire, who says "When the education is not liberating, the dream of the opressed is to become the opressor".
I'm a bit ashamed to say this but watching your videos over the past few months has really changed my prejudice towards transgender people for the better. It's silly that I should have ever thought of transgender people as different in any way, it's just that I never met a trans person I related to. Thank you so much for digging me out of a hole in my way of thinking and closing my perceived gaps between other humans a bit more.
I think that is the problem (and success) of the reactionary right. They don't really interact with the people of whom they talk. So I've had several fairly hard right-wingers tell me that I'm "not a real leftist/SJW" or that I'm somehow fundamentally different from the majority, because they can have a conversation with me. So I've concluded that they think that they're basing their opinions on characterizations by talking heads more than real people.
@Pord Lartsa nono, she's an achievement of capitalism, manufactured as the greatest and most inspired innovation as this is the thing capitalism drives. Sadly, she didn't sell bc the title "a woman who'll make art that talks about topics that concern current day politics and make completely inappropriate jokes somewhere in that" was terrible marketing, so she went independent from the company that made her and they went on to become rich with newer products, targeting a different market. I believe their most sold where "Musk - he reeks of money and bad ideas!" and Ben Sharp-witted-piro (reasoning skills not included)".
As a Greek person, it's so ironic to me that while Greek philosophers were and still are considered part of the ''Western civilization", for many years, Greeks weren't considered ''white'' or ''western'' enough for the big 3 (U.S. Canada, Australia)
Greeks are kinda in the middle and Ancient Greeks had more interactions with the Middle East than Northern and Western Europe. Also, Western Europeans (Latins, Franks etc) saw Greeks apart from themselves which is ironic since they also claimed that their civilization had started in Ancient Athens. 1204 was really a turning point though.
You're a historian? That would mean you have at least a master's degree, but you used the phrase "I stan" which makes me think you're too young to have a master's.....
You know what's weird? Why is South America never considered part of the west, even though it litteraly is in the western hemisphere, and it's mostly Christian, and it inherited as much european culture as the US did.
@Metsarebuff 22 "shitty culture" would be forcing an arbitrary caste system that ensures future nations are stratified, unequal messes. Hard to say how native nations would have turned out. It's not like Scandinavians or Irish commit human sacrifice anymore.
@Asier Linazasoro For one, the concept of technological and societal progress certainly weren't alien to the natives. Mesomericans had working sewer systems and aqueducts, writing charts, an understanding of astronomy, educational houses, among other things. It's not like they were content to stay rock-banging savages. Also, you can have progress and development through trade and communication. That's how the Europeans got their hands on gunpowder and printing to begin with. Many indigenous communities today are marginalized, mistreated, impoverished, and brutalized in some cases (see Guatemala). Therefore, their access to modern amenities is fairly limited by today's standards. That's the legacy of the Spanish caste system. The Spanish Crown saw the Americas as a source of wealth and cheap labor. Any benefit to the natives was simply either a means to or a byproduct of that end. And, given how many of it was fueled by slavery and outright slaughter, I doubt they'd be comforted by it. Two, "but the Aztecs were worse!" isn't a valid argument. They were pretty much hated by surrounding tribes and kingdoms (which is how the Spanish got so many willing volunteers) and were not even a century old by the time of European contact. You're also operating under the assumption that the Aztecs and their barbaric practices would have lasted forever. For all we know, they could have collapsed or reformed with surrounding civilizations sprouting up, just like the Romans.

There's a book called 'How the Irish became White', various peoples who are now considered fundamentally part of western or white "civilisation" were considered other in the past. Growing up and now I never thought of myself as white, it didn't seem very important. I identified more with colonised African or Native American peoples than imperialist countries like Britain or the US.
@Deus Vult! What every educated person should know is that when Rome was Europe's hegemon, there was no Italy thus there were no Italians either. The only thing these two nations share in common is geoghraphical location, and that's pretty much it. My previous comment about fascism obvisously makes no sense, I just wanted to point out how silly it is to connect people who lived hundreds or thousands years ago to the people living today.
As a Jew, I despise the term “Judeo-Christian values.” After hundreds of years terrorizing and persecuting Jews and our beliefs, Christians can’t just start talking as if we are one big mass of similar beliefs. No. We fought desperately to maintain our traditions and culture despite Christian persecution. And considering the term is often brought up in contrast to Islam, please don’t bring us into it. Judaism and Islam has a long and complicated history, but it’s a very different one than that between Islam and Christianity. Edit: I really liked the video. My complaint is with all the people being discussed in the video who use that term.
The term "judeo-christian values" was invented out of whole cloth by the evangelical movement to make it okay for them to like israel all of a sudden (not jews, of course, just israel)
Managerial Elite Toaster It may be an outgrowth, but it’s also, at least in part, a rejection of Judaism. There are academic contexts where the term may be appropriate, but in general usage it feels somewhat appropriative.
It's normal, because "Judeo-Christianity" is a construction, mainly in the U.S., more for political lobbing reasons than anything else. In a way, when the secluded Evangelical communities that have a thingy with the old testament (that is more warlike than the new), became the voting pool of the Bush family, they were used as a religious "bridge" with modern Israel. I'm a European and we don't hear a lot of verbalisms about the subject. Christians never liked that the Jews were a literate community, because this type of minorities cannot be deculturized and assimilated. And with biblical bullshits about the crucifixion unleashed hell on Jews for almost 2 millenniums. On the other hand, before the British "divide and rule" politics in middle East, Islam was a safer place for Jews than the christian lands.
Americano-centric leftist degenerate ConPo is baiting us Europeans to become hungry by display of mediocre fair food. However I told my american friend at the beginning of the video that I would very much like to eat a corndog right now, even though I never got to taste one. I imagine this has been mentioned already but the Mozart tune she included in the video translates to “Lick Me in the Ass” and is a real tune composed by Mozart.
@@FrederickObando No, in German you would say "Leck mich am Arsch", which translates to "lick my ass", but Mozart went the extra mile to call it "Leck mich *im* Arsch", which means "lick me *in* the ass". This wording isn't usually used (by that mean not at all), but it implies, that it's supposed to be even more offensive than the common expression.
@@amhk5918 searching linguee.com there are other (somewhat dated) sources using "im" instead of "am". You're purely basing this on today's German; there's nothing to say "Leck mich im Arsch" wasn't a normal way to say fuck off.

Eric Taxxon Y'know, "amateur" isn't necessarily an insult. If you look at it etymologically it just means someone who loves what they do. :) (Though it's also technically correct since Satie didn't have a formal music education)
It's honestly so funny to me how contradictory these ideas are. You have one side claiming that "the west" is defined by "judeo-christian values" and another side claiming that Jewish people pose a threat to "the west". You have people claiming that Marxism, which was literally invented by Karl Marx, a German, so a westerner, is non-western, while Christianity, which originated on the Middle-East, is somehow very western. And let's be real, culturally, as a German, I have more in common with my Polish neighbours (who wouldn't have been considered part of "the west" for a big part of the 20th ct because communism) than I do with people from the US. At the same time, I'm not sure I have that much in common culturally with, say, Greek people. There's these weird, seemingly arbitrary borders between countries that are considered "western" and those that aren't. Somehow, eastern Europe could become "western" once they adopted capitalism, but it's not like they were culturally super different to the rest of Europe before that. And there's still discussions about whether Turkey is part of Europe (and thus, "the west") or not. Somehow, people seem to have an easier time seeing Russia as part of Europe than Turkey, despite both having large parts of their landmass in Asia, but most of their population living in Europe. Wonder what that's all about...
Both Russia and Turkey are considered Eurasian not 100% European nor 100% Asian. Now as to why it's easier to accept Russia as European.. that could be because Russia is primarily Orthodox whereas Turkey is primarily Muslim and when people think of Europe they think Christian even though some European countries have huge Muslim populations or in cases like Albania are primarily Muslim. There's also the Turkey/Greece/Cyprus conflict and the occupation etc etc that prevents Turkey from joining the EU but the EU=/= Europe
Plus Marx was ethnically Jewish. His father converted and Marx was an atheist that was critical of Judaism, but many scholars and philosophers have explored themes of Judaism and Jewish thought in his early works.
@@geo3898 "Why it's easier to accept Russia as European [than Turkey]" I think it's because the average Westerner thinks Turkey is fundamentalist Muslim and brown, despite Turkey being secular and fighting more terror attacks than any other European nation, and most Turks being just as white as any other Mediterranean. Regardless of diplomatic obstacles to Turkey joining the EU, the media sees it in racial and cultural terms, as migrants "swamping" and "flooding" Europe.
@@LowestofheDead i disagree with your last point about Europeans seeing Turks as immigrants swamping and flooding Europe the Turkish diaspora is already huge in Europe and as far as i know they don't have a lot of problems from Europeans especially the more secular Turks. The whole "judeo-christian values" thing is rememiscent to words like "the Jewish bible" or "jewish Christmas". People will be antisemitic, while at the same time try to lump Jewish people into "western culture" in hopes that they'll be forgotten or stay quiet about it.

Funny how those who spout "judeo-Christian values" don't really focus on the "judeo" part, which can and does have different cultural values and also a lot of them still throw around antisemitic rhetoric.
I don't think they really do in general. It seems more like they just throw Jews in there as some kind of "us versus them" with Islam. The people who use it really don't know anything about Judaism and just assume it's like Christianity except without a messiah. Also, just because they're pro-Israel doesn't mean they actually care about Jews. There are lots of Christians who just want Israel around to fight with Muslim countries because they think it's some prerequisite for the rapture. The other part is that Israel needs to have Jews there so they can all die before the rapture.
Hyenafan if they actually knew anything about Judaism they would know that the Talmud actually shit talks Jesus multiple times, and they would hate Jews. Surely South America is not included as "western" because the whole east-west idea is a latitude not a longitude, and the line was drawn along the trading routes between europe, usa, and china, many centuries ago. We don't call australia "eastern" either, even though it is also to the east. This isn't to exclude australia in some way for convenience we wouldn't call somoa or papua new guinea eastern either. It's just because the majority of the continuous land mass of the world happens to be in north hemisphere (much less oceans and a continuous series of land passes connecting them all) so it became the standard line for latitudes and the various blocs along the line got the names : west, middle east, east, as a result. It was measured from europe simply because europe had the most advanced ship building capacity for a few hundred years so did the most navigation. There's no racial component to it, imo. "The west" came long, long after phrases like "The orient" but that just means "east". The old name for "the west" was "Occidental" which is the latinate form. "the west" just is a more modern phrase for it. It's gotten politically loaded for some parties granted but the conspiracy contra presents is not supported by the history of the terms honestly.
The other reason South America wasn't added was probably because most of the governments were very socialist or dictatorships, or, as in the case of argentina, constantly in a diplomatic argument with britain. Democracy was a criterion that emerged at some stage, so not being a democracy, would automatically, discredit from being "western". The concept shaped up around affirmation of principles such as "eliminating corruption" in recent decades and since most western countries score very low on corruption indices, compared to teh global averages, and certainly compared to S. America, that'll be another reason why there wasn't a clamour to add South America. But, it would be weird to add them - no other southern hemisphere regions, regardless of race, is included in the east-west line, either historically, or now! It's a form of "greenwich meridian privilege" , due to the distribution of the worlds oceans being as they are... if you will.

In Britain for instance you might as well went to another country entirely because of how heavily the accents and dialects shift from town to town. Then there is quite a bunch of European minorities living in the various countries without having one of their own like the Swabes and the Sorbs in Germany, the Scots, the Bascs in Spain or the Sami in Northern Europe. Europe is pretty damn varied with the only thing people really have in common being the skin tone. Same as Africa basicly but much paler. But since Americans are traditionally superficial they only conclusion they ever draw is: white = west and that's it.
It's so funny as a European when you see Americans talk about how culturally diverse the US is. Like, omg, California is like, totally diffs from Texas! Lmao, okay honey.
It's not just Americans. You have any idea how hot white nationalism is in Europe right now? Europeans are just as susceptible to this propaganda as Americans. If not more.
America is not homegeneous either, Texas really is different from places like Oregon, New York etc. but America comes across as homogeneous to Europeans, because Europe is way more diverse in comparison. I think the biggest barrier is the language, the fact that in Europe we speak different languages in every country you go to changes a lot. Language shapes the way you think and see the world, and it is rooted so deeply in each country's history, circumstances and individual culture. Not to mention, European nations for most of their history were in constant war with one another - if the US had been born after thousands of years of endless wars between states - there probably wouldn't be one united "America" as we know it. We'd see a sharper divide. But the US is a young country, and the states haven't been alive long enough to develop a completely unique culture that is completely separate from America's founding.
I honestly love the thought of school children, in 300 years, reading through their textbooks and trying to get their heads around the idea of this era. "'Social justice warriors'? Holy shit, can you imagine being so conceited that you'd call yourself that?" "Oh, yeah, no. Their enemies called them that. It was meant as an insult." ".........huh?" "Yeah, originally it was an ironic title used within the group, regarding people who talked a big game on justice, but didn't do much, but then their enemies took hold of it and started using it against people who raised money for refugees or campaigned against rape." "... I'm confused."
Athywren Im a yankee doodle dandy Did you know Yankee doodle was supposed to be an insult? Then they took the insulting song and made it a rallying cry
If you're actually campaigning or raising money, I've never seen those people get the term. Mostly it's the keyboard juggernauts who deem everything offensive while patronizing the very people they claim to be campaigning for. In short "Fuck off minorities, I'm being offended for you"
If we don't all die I take such comfort in knowing how despise the right will be one day and how crazy they will look to future people when there's no doubt all the stuff SJW's and leftists talk about will be seen as normal. Do people really think we've reach the pinnacle of human social and economic progress? It just stops in the 1990s or something? When has it ever worked like that?
That's only in an effort to reclaim the term after years of it being used by reactionaries against those on the left, not because so called sjws think they are high and mighty crusaders against injustice.
Contra, I can't say that I agree with you on everything, but I really respect you. Your videos are well-researched, and it's clear you put a lot of time and effort into them. They are very thought-provoking. Also, you're really funny. Keep it up!
Well said. And honestly, I do agree like 95% of the time. But I think what I like most is the not-so-subtle mockery. For example, I used to think ignoring Peterson was the best way to fight his poorly-developed ideas that have spurned a nation of young, white men frustrated that the rules their parents lived by and found success with are no longer reliably producing similar results, to demand that everyone pretends that they're special, that they deserve the privileges unjustly taken away from them. But now I think mockery might be a better strategy. The video (with the bath scene) referenced here was a work of inspired genius, exactly the kind of thing that we need more of. Mockery and reasoned argument that goes out of its way to question the assumptions we are all living with and not even noticing.
Chris DeVries then what was the need of lowering their "privileges" so much? College students for example, white men (or men in general) are a minority there now, instead of just being equal compared to their proportion numbers
The Age of Empires joke made my day. Wonder if Natalie might make some Sonic, Zelda, Fallout, Duke Nukem, or Castlevania references. If she did a video dressed in a vault suit or as a gender-swapped Caesar or Link, HUBBA HUBBA!

I hope that you accept Jesus into your heart and also open a fucking book at some point
Fun fact: “Leck mich am Arsch” is still a commonly used phrase in German that roughly translates to something like “fuck off”. It’s said to have been coined by the badass Knight Götz von Berlechingen when he was asked to surrender. There is also a very famous play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (who id argue is something like our German Shakespeare) about the guy that I would definitely recommend if you can get a hold of it.
You know, just to be fair, Christ himself chopped the ten commandments down to two: love god (which honestly I get people feeling a way about that) and love everyone else. So, I mean, totally opposite of what 'the west' wants out of 'judeo-christian values'.
@@LordoftheStrings109 Very true! Makes me sad though that so many people who say they adhere to the Christian faith choose to be so...vengeful and angry. I worry for them, at the risk of sounding too preachy, cause the Bible says there's gonna be a lot of people who thought they were doing God's work when the whole time they were working for their enemy.
Depending on how you look at it, he even made it one rule: Love thy neighbor as you would love yourself because there is Jesus is everyone so when you love someone else, you love God.

Islam and Christianity are more similar than judaism and Christianity honestly
The term "judeo-christian values" was invented out of whole cloth by the evangelical movement to make it okay for them to like israel all of a sudden (not jews, of course, just israel)
Yeah but it's Judeo-Christian because Christianity is an outgrowth of Judaism.

Wandering Oryx Lol I don't keep up with any of the Transformer movies so I had no idea what that's about.
GalaxyEspeon oaawh man, Lindsay has a major hard on for the children's commercials. You might even say, the duality of duocons, which constitutes of two vehicles, smashing into each other, that the imagery in the movie might look a bit 'phallic', considering a 'cock'pit of a helicopter sticks out of the chest of the blue, 'male', bot, along side his female, 'red', 'partner', might also have the plane swing up from underneath what would be considered the crotch area, with the turbines coming full circle to the front. So in a way, Ripcord has a penis burst out of him, while Slash is grabbed by the pussy and has a plane fly up her robo vagina.
Wandering Oryx sounds like transformer robot sex is pretty deadly and epic lol!
The whole "judeo-christian values" thing is rememiscent to words like "the Jewish bible" or "jewish Christmas". People will be antisemitic, while at the same time try to lump Jewish people into "western culture" in hopes that they'll be forgotten or stay quiet about it.

OK. The amount of thought that goes into your videos is actually just beyond almost anything we usually see on UA-cam. It's aesthetically gorgeous, logically comprehensive, and also so engaging/entertaining. I can tell you're a perfectionist and multi-talented, and the results are amazing. Also, I'm sure this is because you come from an academic background, but I love how you do such great research and present like you're speaking to an academic audience and don't use any manipulative tactics to make your points. Funny how those who spout "judeo-Christian values" don't really focus on the "judeo" part, which can and does have different cultural values and also a lot of them still throw around antisemitic rhetoric.
Yeah, I was a bit upset she didn't say anything about that.
The people who use the term "judeo-christian" usually include Jews as part of western civilization and are pro-Israel
It really makes more sense for Muslims to support Zionism, considering they believe in and practice all the same rituals that Christians believe are done away with
Wasserrübenvergilbungsvirus in my experience the antisemitism doesn't know a side. Even the most "intersectional" leftists will say the most antisemitic things and put it in the guise of being critical of Israel.

Absolutley loved that you pointed out the hypocricy of denying South America the label of "western" despite fitting the cultural and historical "requirments" just because chunks of their population have the improper level of paleness. South America is incredibly diverse racially and the amount of people on both sides of the spectrum (but mostly the donald trumps of the world) who ignore that is really sad.
I bet it would be just fiiiine if you were a blond Argentinean though! You'd be invited into the "Western Civilization Club" no matter where you're from, no matter what your culture is, as long as you're white.
I suspect that there are strata once you get in though. But I think that would be less to do with where you're from and more to do with your wealth and social status.
But no amount of wealth or social status will get you in if you're e.g. oil-rich aay-raab or Nigerian dripping in Rolexes and hand-made shoes.
@@myvirtualpresencefyi funny thing is though that alt right types literally do not care how "white" someone from Brazil or Argentina is. To them anyone in the extremely diverse continent of South America is, their words not mine, a mutt.
@@thumbhead3370 Really? That surprises me. Does their logic not affiliate them with Racist Afrikaans or the Argentinean descendants of Aryan Germans?
I mean, I don't really care. I don't wish to go down the White Rabbit Hole of cultish nerdism intrinsic to the racist but maybe, as Natalie suggests, we SHOULD try to understand every little detail of their psychological pov.

I find it interesting that it's a lot of Americans who try to push 'European values'. It shows how little they know about Europe to think it's homogeneous.
@Doven Ro Galus
Even that's a bit of a stretch. Depending on where you are you might either have cultural differences between federal states/provinces or even have quite varying culture and dialects every few kilometers.
Hugh Gallagher

"Yeah, originally it was an ironic title used within the group, regarding people who talked a big game on justice, but didn't do much, but then their enemies took hold of it and started using it against people who raised money for refugees or campaigned against rape."
"... I'm confused."
"Who would call themselves 'agitators'?"
"Oh no, their enemies called them that. MLK's movement wasn't popular at the time"
Athywren
Im a yankee doodle dandy
Did you know Yankee doodle was supposed to be an insult?
"Things that have never happened in europe" absolutely killed me
Contra, I can't say that I agree with you on everything, but I really respect you. Your videos are well-researched, and it's clear you put a lot of time and effort into them. They are very thought-provoking. Also, you're really funny. Keep it up!
Yep, all of this 👍
Mockery and reasoned argument that goes out of its way to question the assumptions we are all living with and not even noticing.
same she's the only leftist youtuber i like, tho her fans are annoying but thats a different issue
Chris DeVries then what was the need of lowering their "privileges" so much? College students for example, white men (or men in general) are a minority there now, instead of just being equal compared to their proportion numbers
Peterson is a public persona, he deserves to be mocked and to be honest he sees himself as the "daddy" of westen male culture.
The thought of Contra seducing guys with nostalgic video game memories makes me really happy
The Age of Empires joke made my day.
Wonder if Natalie might make some Sonic, Zelda, Fallout, Duke Nukem, or Castlevania references. If she did a video dressed in a vault suit or as a gender-swapped Caesar or Link, HUBBA HUBBA!
not that it would be necessary...
(not that it's not working, either...)
(wololo 🍆💦)
That "Judeo Christian" point never includes the Ethiopian Orthodox or Coptic orthodox church as the West so that's interesting
@Ivan Ivanovich Ivanovosky It's funny, because the idea of fascism was invented by christians. Hehe. And the fact that 10% of egypts population is still coptic after over a millenia of muslim rule doesnt tell me as much(sarcasm) as the fact that there is a massive pagan community in europe. Oh wait. Or the big muslim community in spain as a result of the moorish empires. Oh wait. You get the point you dirty cross worshipping rat
Ivan Ivanovich Ivanovosky Christ you are fucking dumb, have you ever even been to the Middle East?
Or actually read a history book?
GG Allin No they aren’t wtf, Christians are respected with equal dignity with Jews as fellow sons of Abrahams in Muslim countries,it even says as much in their Quran.Historically,Christians have been the most intolerant group of others anyway, both to Muslims and the Jews, expelling them from their countries at various times, see the various times Jews and Muslims were expelled from Christian Kingdoms throughout history, while Muslims always allowed Christians into their various empires throughout history. You would have known this if you weren’t a dumb low IQ ‘Murican who thinks history and booklearn’n are too difficult.I’m from Greece and an devout orthodox Christian since birth,I work and go to the Middle East often because my job involves helping business startups in less developed areas around the world including North Africa and the Middle East,I’ve been to every Arabic speaking country in the Middle East in North Africa several times over the years and this idea that Christians ate oppressed is peak retardation,no one cares if you are Christian at all and there is no ongoing coordinated exercise in oppressing Christians, sure they may be the one retard but to suggest systematic oppression of Christians is just silly, many thriving Christian communities like the Copts in Egypt and in Lebanon and literally every other country.
I hope that you accept Jesus into your heart and also open a fucking book at some point
Or really Judaism, let's be honest
@@randomguy4167 truly well said. I can confirm from experience too.
14:14 Ah yeah, the magnum opus of Mozart 'Leck mich im Arsch', I do love that piece
nice touch Natalie
nice touch
Good point. Even the first commandment can be distilled into "think of something other than yourself" in a practical sense.
It's so sad and pathtic to see non-Christians try and establish what Christianity teaches.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [a]homosexuals, nor [b]sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
