I was speaking about Dervla this week with a colleague from Pakistan. She is renowned in Pakistan as she travelled there with her 6 year old daughter in winter. Where the Indus is young is another fantastic travel book

Thank you Derek, for reminding me of the greatness of Dervla her spirit and fearlessness, she could teach the youth of today how to live a truly exciting life away from social; media💖💖

Dervla only passed in May. I am sure her memory and work, will be honoured in some way by her friends and neighbours in Lismore in good time. Great video Derek. R.I.P Dervla 🌹🌹🌹

Dervla wrote about my home district .... On a shoestring to coorg .... Thats how I discovered her writing over 30 years ago. Have devoured her books ever since .... I take all travel writing with a pinch of salt .... It is hard for a foreigner to truly understand a place and its people ..... Nevertheless her writing is very entertaining and inspiring

Very sad Derek to see Dervla’s grave - like you said, how lovely it would be if a tribute is made in Lismore in time for her memory. Coincidentally (or spookily! 😎) - I am in tonight with an evening planned to read the final 25 pages of Full Tilt!! 🫢 What an amazing, inspiring, Irish woman…and what an example she set of how one can live life. You’re walking your own walk too Derek - great to see anyone who is inspired and listens to the prompt to walk the road less travelled so to speak!!

Good on you, Derek, for your moving tribute to Dervla. Am ploughing through 'The Island That Dared'/sub-titled 'Journeys in Cuba'. In late 2005, first accompanied by her daughter Rachel and Rachel's three young daughters 6, 8 and ten! No bikes, but catching buses, and trains, cadging lifts etc… Highly recommended, and NEVER boring! Dervla later returned alone, walking alone, in late 2007. Full of info about the history of Cuba, and her [flawed] hero, Fidel Castro…

Love your stuff man. May I say that the grave could be that way as that's what the person may have wanted. As you said, she appears to have been very unpretentious. Who knows. Either way she was a great head and may she rest in peace. Myself and a friend have pedalled fro Waterford to that graveyard and enjoyed the spot as a sort of pilgrimage Stay safe and I hope the road treats ya well

Thank you too for so much insight into Dervla Murphy. I had never heard of her but love how you summed her life up and agree she deserves some recognition. I will definitely look her up now. I wonder if she wanted a simple grave. It sounds as though she never sought recognition but did what she enjoyed - and although possibly for the benefit of others, maybe not expecting their thanks or acknowledgement. She sounds a very lovely person - a character we could all learn much from. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you.
