      The significance of that scene is so much more than people realize. Waymond says “in another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you”, in every other universe, waymond isnt the best version of himself. The best version of himself is with Evelyn. While the best versions of Evelyn, didnt have Waymond in them :

    Adam absolutely nailed it with the suicide storyline. I've thought the same from the very first time I watched the movie. Most people focus on the acceptance of family and whatnot, but the story is about overcoming depression. Joy says the following lines in the movie...
    "it's all just a pointless, swirling bucket of horsesh!t"
    “I'm Tired. I Don't Want To Hurt Anymore And For Some Reason When I'm With You, It Just Hurts The Both Of Us.”
    “Do You Know Why I Actually Built The Bagel? It Wasn't To Destroy Everything. It Was To Destroy Myself.”
    “Why Not Go Somewhere Where Your Daughter Is More Than Just This?”
    "You're feeling a good thing, you got your hopes up. I'm here to save you some time. Eventually, that all just goes away."

    • @KBRoller
      @KBRoller Місяць тому +91

      There are many layered themes in this film. I find that people who haven't experienced suicidal thoughts tend to miss it in this movie... which is astounding to me, because it seems so explicit about those themes.

    • @evienicks
      @evienicks Місяць тому +40

      I think most people end up discussing the philosophical underpinnings of the depression-in this case, nihilism-since the movie is so clearly a movie of ideas, but it's also just as clearly an emotional family melodrama. You are right that talking explicitly about the suicidality matters a lot!

      Yes! I’d been in the middle of one of my depressed moods for a while when I saw this. Everything about Joy/Jobu’s story hit me so hard, and I was basically sobbing the whole movie.
      I love watching analyses & reactions for this movie b/c every person gives me new insight into it. Hoping to one day be able to change my nihilsm from Jobu’s “nothing matters so I don’t matter” to Waymond’s “if nothing matters, then every possibility is available.” Still working on that

      More than a key catalyst. He hadn't booked any show since his teens. He's talked about his white friends getting 10 times as many auditions as his 1 in a year. So instead he spend the next 25 years working behind the scenes in fight choreography. But then he saw "Crazy Rich Asians" (the real catalyst) and thought maybe he should get back into acting, maybe the parts for Asian actors were there. And then he auditioned and got this part. And won an Oscar for it.

    I absolutely love this movie.
    This movie is addressing nihilism, cynicism, existentialism, and absurdism. That our lives are ultimately futile and without higher purpose. However, knowing that nothing matters should be the ultimate relief - the peace you learn should be that if life is meaningless, then you are absolutely free to create meaning. Embrace the uncertainty, rebel against the cynics. It doesn't matter why. You're here now and you don't have to justify it to anyone or any higher 'power'. It doesn't matter, the results are always the same.
    So that if nothing you do matters then the only thing that matters is what you do. That the meaning of life is to give life meaning. Everything is made up and the points don't matter.

    Yo... thank you guys for posting this. Adam's words at the end about why he didn't cry... made me cry. I've been in that despair... nothing matters... etc. type of thinking recently and just so terrified of existence or the eventual lack of it.... and for some reason Adam's words got a reaction from me. So... thanks!

    How do you pitch this movie to be green lit? Then it goes and just works, We were all laughing at two rocks, texting? speaking? communicating. How the hell do you pull that off. The amount of brain power and vision that went into this movie is staggering.

      And they were really riding that line. With a concept like this, just one small step away from absurdity or closer to absurdity would have made it a complete failure of a film. They got it exactly right.

      Real answer, the Daniels wrote and directed a lot of short films and music videos, including the video for turn down for what. They were invited by Sundance Lab to develop their first feature, swiss army man. It was picked up by a24. It wasn't huge but was generally well received and has since built a cult following. The Daniels had also been developing the idea of a multiverse movie for around 10 years. With independent movies, you really only need to be pitching to investors who can help fund your movie, and there are plenty of people that are happy to invest in art like this. But all in all, creativity is something that can be practiced and developed. It also helps that the Daniels are two people that can bounce ideas back and forth. After that, a lot of people devote time and energy into making the film and the Daniels are pretty good guys so the actors and crew seem happy to be a part of it. That's how something like this exists 😊

    You asked where you know the actress who plays Joy from, my guess is from Shang Chi. She played the friend that Shawn and Katie are at the bar with. And one of the butt-plug warriors played the masked master who trained Shawn.

    There are so many layers to this movie--tell her you love her, the smell of perfume, even the googly eyes contrasted to the bagel. It's so good. And Waymond is so good and kind and Evelyn and Joy's relationship is heartbreaking, and the fact that Joy was never just Joy, she was always Jobu. My daughter and I were literally crying together in the theater.

      Here is a unique fun fact: When you count just the major, "above-the-line" categories (screenplay, acting, directing, and picture), this film holds the record for most wins across these specific categories EVER (6 of its 7 wins are in these specific categories, with Editing being the only technical win). An argument could be made for GOING MY WAY (1944) tying this record as well, although one of its wins was in the now discontinued category of Best Story.
      It is also one of only 3 movies to win 3 acting Oscars (after A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (1951) and NETWORK (1976)) but the only one of the bunch to also win Picture. Interestingly, all 3 movies won Actress and Supporting Actress.

    I disagree. I don't think the core of this movie was to deal with her daughter being suicidal. Her being suicidal was a symptom of the real core of the movie, her daughter wanting her to love her.
    Her daughter had made the bagel a long time before but never even entertained the idea of using it. Why? Because her real goal was to find a version of her mother who could and would understand her. She crossed endless universes to find this version of her mother. She finally found one that could understand her, and that was finally when she tried to use the bagel to destroy not just herself, but her mother too. When her mother refused to go along, she felt that she may have found a mother that could understand, but wouldn't. That was when she gave up and decided to end herself alone.
    It's such an amazing story, because so much of it hinges on the cental theme, nothing matters.
    The daughter's view of the theme depressed her, because she felt that nothing she did mattered to her mother. She could literally do anything, including erasing all existence of herself from every universe in the multiverse and it wouldn't make her mother notice her, nevermind love her.
    Her mother had a different perspective on the theme. The fact that nothing they do matters was a good thing, because then they could do anything they wanted. So many times we are so afraid to do things because of the repercussions or because it may upset someone. If you look at it as though none of that matters, you are freed to finally do the things you actually want to do.
    Take the mom for instance. In this universe, part of the reason why she was so bad at things was that she couldn't do anything great enough. She spends so much of her time on the laundry shop, doing the books for the shop, and raising her daughter, that she feels she hasn't been able to focus on becoming great. Having glimpses into those other universes, she now knows that being great in those universes means giving up things in her life like her husband and her daughter. She finally saw that those were the things that she loved the most. Nothing matters, when you're with the ones you love.
