Tbh I found El's frumpy wardrobe choices almost unbelievable, especially after how much time the previous seasons has spent giving El a makeover. She got a punk makeover in season 2 and a mall girl makeover in season 3 - heck, Mike even gave her a makeover in season 1 - but she still doesn't know how to dress, to the point of standing out to the bullies? I'd call that strange.

If you think about it, without someones help she doesn't really have a sense of style. She spent so many years in an hospital gown, after all...
She kind of fused with her current family and adapted Joyce's clothing style to her own, more earth tones and subtle clothes. The flannels she uses are Mikes also!
So, in a way, she is still trying to find her identity, more than ever now, since she moved to California and everything seems to be so different, she doesn't even have friends...

@@bertam.7726 I get all that, but the whole last season was about figuring out what she liked fashion-wise. She did all that and then...simply forgot? Also, malls exist in California. And even without friends, she can still look at other girls and magazines and figure it out. Instead, like you said, she did match Joyce's looks, and that makes zero sense because she's desperate to fit in with girls her own age.

@@T_Cup eh, I think it makes sense. there's another interview with Amy Parris where she goes a little more in-depth about it and I thought it made sense, especially the hand-me-down flannels and stuff. but also, people mention her getting clothes from Will and Joyce and maybe even Mike, but I also immediately upon seeing her clothes in s4 thought of Hopper. she's still very much in mourning of her dad, and maybe uses some of his old clothes to sort of cope with him being gone. i'd also imagine fashion isn't her #1 concern with everything going on in her life, and it might remind her of Hawkins and Max and how much she misses everything there. but even so, Max's advice for her was to find something that feels like her, and she doesn't know herself yet!! so just as she's exploring who she is, her wardrobe is a bit all over the place and has pieces from people she loves, who helped make her who she is
