    The scene is about a depressed person on the verge of suicide. Max wanted to switch places with Billy. Hence, the song choice. What Max realized though was she had so many values in her life to live for so she choose to live rather than let the darkness consume her.
    I also thought the white light metaphor which is a symbol for someone dying being reversed here was very clever. Instead going to the white light toward death the white light here leads to life. What a beautiful and powerful scene.

    • @EdHed_
      @EdHed_ Рік тому +63

      That’s very true- and on top of the relation to swapping places with billy out of depression, the song also has a very literal connection to what’s happening physically in the scene. Max is in a deadly situation and wants to swap with her real body which she sees floating in the real world, but she’s also having to “run up that hill” and find her reasons to live, as well as attempt a difficult escape from the dark thoughts which vecna taunts and threatens her with. in my opinion, the scene is very well crafted in such a way that it hits hard for everyone on multiple levels due to all of the symbolism and relation to several themes. And most of those themes are ones that many people can relate to as well- theres a theme of the power of music and how it has the ability to reach people in very deep ways (max’s escape is through music, as shown in s4e1. plus, the whole mental asylum part of the show establishes a very real point that music can help to calm the brain), there’s also a theme of perseverance through depression and darkness (her escape from vecna), there’s a theme of confronting your fears and deepest concerns (max’s letter to billy), and there’s a theme of remorse (max feeling sorry and guilty that her brother died and she couldn’t have saved him or been friends with him like she imagined). All of those themes are beautifully wrapped together in the buildup, song selection, visual effects, amazing acting, and high stakes that the duffers established. I’m honestly so impressed by how far they’ve taken this series- they’re certainly allowing the show to live up to its initial potential.

    "running up that hill" by kate bush has a lot of meaning in this scene, wanted to swap places with a dead relative that you loved and would no mater what swap places with them (billy). and life constantly is you having to run a long upwards hill, dreading every second off it but then eventually reaching the top.

    • @EdHed_
      @EdHed_ Рік тому +41

      true- but I also think there’s more resemblance to swapping places with her body in the real world which she can see rising to its near death, so the fact that her fav song is playing and she’s actually trying to swap places with her actual body which is about to be twisted like a pretzel and killed, it makes it all the more intense for her and such a symbolic moment. but yeah I also think there’s a message of her wanting to swap places for billy because she feels guilty for his death. It’s really a perfect mix of song choice, buildup, effects, and editing. the flashbacks add even higher stakes to what was already a perfect moment. the duffers and their whole team are truly geniuses in crafting excellent cinema lol

    The analogy for depression, trauma, and suicide is what i love the most here. Max was literally fighting her demons and escaping the darkness to come back to life. And she had to find those happy memories herself and put in the effort to run away/escape. Also ridiculous that Vecna's makeup and costume took 6 hours.

    Just a note on the filming: Very glad they did it the same way Lord of the Rings was filmed. Relying on practical effects and only using CGI when absolutely necessary, it provides a much more immersive and realistic experience. Many productions rely too heavily upon CGI and it really weakens the whole picture which makes the audience feel further removed from the scene rather than making them feel a part of it. Much more physical work, but incredibly worth it

    This scene has literally changed my life, it's so weird to say bit it genuinely has.
    The whole situation resonates with me so much since I lost my brother 18 months ago and seriously suffered with grief, anxiety and depression.
    This scene felt like captured the pain of that experience so well while also showing how hard it is to overcome, since watching this I've felt better than I have in a long time and the song can now almost instantly fix my bad moods.
    Seriously to every actor, writer, effects artist, director, producer and anyone else involved in making this scene, thank you so much.

  • @daydreams590
    @daydreams590 Рік тому +11

    This scene is a masterpiece of acting, story climax, sound design, and cinematography.
    The actors, especially Sadie Sink, show such a range of emotions (fear, panic, despair, hope and will to survive) that make the audience feel the same desperation for Max to survive.
    The story of Max coming to terms with her survivor's guilt/depression and choosing life and her friends over death is so heart wrenching while also such a great climax to her emotional journey.
    The sound design in this scene is amazing. It sets the stage of using deep/dark toned music and harmonizing when Max is captured. It ramps up the suspense with the ticking of the clock as her friends rush to find the music to save her. The song Running Up That Hill with the additions of the string instrumentals beginning to swell encourages hope in the audience and Max before the sharp cut to black with no music adds a level of catharsis for the audience. The call for Max from her friends, the deep tone that signifies her return to her body, and then a soft piano reprise of running up that hill signifying she made it fills us (the audience) with relief and happiness. The use of Running Up That Hill was also such a fantastic song choice as well since in the context of the scene it encourages Max to literally run towards her friends who care about her while also making an emotional parallel to the pain she has been experiencing due to her survivor's guilt over Billy's death (her desire to trade places with him in death), her inability to communicate that pain with her loved ones, and lastly, her will to live and begin to heal.
    The cinematography is so powerful by starting the scene with Max isolated away from the people who care about her, the eerie dark red background with lightning, the destroyed home (similar to how her home/family has been forever altered), and Vecna (the personification of her inner demons) physically trapping her in her own mind like many people suffering with depression/mental illness. The ray of hope (or light at the end of the tunnel) illuminated by the music and vision of her friends calling for her. Her being lifted into the air out of reach from her friends emphasizing that what happens to her next will be Max's decision. She is the only one who can save herself. The montage of all of the times she was truly happy and of all the people who don't want to lose her giving her the strength to fight for her survival. The darkness in mind crashing down on her as she runs against all odds towards the light (while the song begins to swell and tells her to keep running) before cutting to black and allowing the audience a moment of catharsis before she opens her eyes and then says "I'm still here" while being held by Lucas. The final imagery of soft twilight closing the scene on their silhouettes is just beautiful.
    This scene is simply a masterpiece of filmmaking.
