SAFARI in GORONGOSA - Lost in Mozambique 2 Episode 5

- Join me on an unforgettable adventure as I explore the breathtaking beauty of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. I have been wanting to visit this park my entire life, and the safari in Gorongosa lived up to my expectations!
Gorongosa is an incredible story, a once great park, with a higher animal density than any where else in Africa, that was devastated by poaching during the civil war in Mozambique, and is now on the come back!
In this bumper episode I spend 4 days exploring the park, going on daily game drives, and a bush walk. My brilliant guide Castro gives me an insight into the complex environmental project that is underway in the park.
I hope you all enjoy the episode, and let me know if you enjoy the longer format?
Tim Hulme
Absolutely stunning storytelling. This has definitely inspired me to go to Gorongosa soon. Looking forward to see the adventures in chimanimani.
Thank you!!
Muito obrigado Vasco, english translation of your interesting comment.
I knew Gorogosa before the civil war, and I know how devastated it was afterward.
The recovery work done, thanks to the commitment of the philanthropist Greg, and the entire team involved, is a good example that should be followed by some African countries, namely Angola, which suffered, and still suffers, the devastation of its valuable faunal heritage, more sustainable for future generations than oil or diamonds.
Congratulations to the Author, for promoting this magnificent renaissance.
In the mid 1960's we went on an Italian cruise ship "THE AFRICA " from Cape Town to Beira and LM. My dad had to get special permission for me to join a group from the ship which travelled in 2 mini vans to Gorongosa. Special permission because the war was on between Portugal and the commies.I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. We saw lions at a kill and pulled up next to a huge bull elephant. The Portuguese driver opened the drivers side window and clapped his hands infront of the elephant. I still hear the Italian nurse from the ship yelling "MAMA MIA " at this.. After the war most of the animals in Gorongosa were slaughtered. Lets hope they are allowed to make a recovery.
What an incredible journey that must have been! My love for traveling africa started at a similar age!
It was a war between the Mozambiqueans and the occupiers/settlers, S🕳️. 😡
Reassurring and pleasing to see this ecosystem slowly recovering in the 21st century after the long chaos of 20th century war.
A major step forward for Mozambique and African wildlife..
Where next? ...South Sudan perhaps?
Great video Tim. I first visited Gorongosa in 1973 when I was a student at UCT. We drove up from Cape Town in a VW Beetle and camped. We did plenty of self drives and were amazed by the huge numbers of hippos. We saw lions in the Lion House. The war was raging so we were lucky to be there. I next visited in 2013. Fortunately we were still able to do self drives then. The game numbers were tiny compared with my visit in 1973. However, it was great to see the rebuilding work going on. The birding was excellent. Keep up the wonderful videos.
..and yes deeply moving to encounter the elephant...who have endured and more.
Viva Africana Loxodonta
Another awesome episode. Top quality Tim. Thank you for sharing
Thanks Bruce!
Another great episode Tim! I hope this place gets restored to it's former glory again eventually.
Thanks brother!
26:53 the elephants, the background with waterways....it's incredible.
Bucketlist destination for sure!
Gorongosa N P Moz now top of my "bucket list".
I can’t wait to go back!!
Brilliant story telling, Tim! Absolutely loved watching this. Very sad to hear about the war and how it affected the park but its wonderful to hear its on the rise again! Also loved the humour from the rangers😃
Thanks guys! Really appreciate it! 🥹
WOW, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth... I'm captivated by the scenes of Gorongosa's prolific biodiversity that Tim presented here, and now I want to go see Gorongosa for myself one day. With this beautiful and multifaceted restoration, I consider Greg Carr a WORLD HERO!!! 🔥💯🐘🦁
Me also! Would love to interview him on my next visit, maybe that is optimistic though!
Thank you for the nice video, good sound and picture quality
Thank you for the support!
Gorongosa one of my dream destinations....amazing trip, the elephants were mesmerizing, they will overcome their trauma if we (humans) keep respecting and reassuring them, your last words said it all
I honestly can’t wait to go back and see the progress!
Wow nice tour much appreciated thank u guys
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is absolutely stunning. Love all moments of it
Thank you!
Excellent and very informative video about Gorongosa. One of the best that I have seen about the Park. Keep up the good work Tim!
Thank you, I wish I could have stayed longer!
Remarkable representation of the park Tim! This kind of positive Overlanding experience/reporting is what we need. You and Bruce are doing great things to showcase what Overlanding really should be about - the people and the wild life OF the PLACE! Keep it up.
Thanks brother, focus of the channel going forward! Still working through backlog, but you’ll see it slowly applying more and more!
Nxa, Bruce? Please don’t compare Tim with Bruce. Tim clearly isn’t in this for his ego and he actually knows what he’s doing as well.
@@lungelomathenjwa1477 Thank you for your reply and support of Tim. Positivity of reporting is all I was referring to. Just my opinion 🤙👍
@@lungelomathenjwa1477 wow. Thank you Lungelo one thing I can agree on is that Tim certainly knows what he is doing and I aspire to edit and film like he does hopefully one day.. Not sure why you feel like attacking me personally but I would love more feedback and I welcome it.
I hope your day improves.
Tim, your content just gets better and better. Such an underrated channel! Thanks for sharing this one, Gorongosa is a bucket list item for me too. Cheers
Thanks Sean! Unfortunately social media rewards consistency and sticking to your genre, neither of which I am good with! Haha! But i have now hired staff to help with my wonderful loss making passion project! But the encouragement is really appreciated and we gonna keep pushing till i fall over!
All I can say is EPIC 🔥
Thanks brother!

Peter1949
Hi Peter, oh I hope you are still able to make it there sometime, but in the meantime I will keep trying to take you to these place! What else is on the bucketlist??
The elephant finding section is beautiful! It is a very different kind of setting than what one gets in Kruger; the attitude of the ellies and the area, foliage, lighting made it breathtaking. Thanks for this.
So glad you enjoyed, it was a really special sighting!! 😍
Amazing work!
Another great episode Tim!
Thanks Declan!
Thanks for recording and sharing your experinces

Was happy just to see the Lost in Africa 4x4 today in Newlands M3😂😂😂😂
Haha that’s awesome say hi next time!
Love the Video, and thank you for sharing the story of our amazing park.... i have saved the link and will be showing it to Castro and the Guides... amazing. Kanimambo. ❤
Ah thank you Carol!! That’s amazing, Castro was so great! I can’t wait to come back and see more of the progress you’re making!!
Os meus Parabéns ao Autor, por nos ter proporcionado ver este renascimento, de um Parque cujo valioso património faunístico foi dizimado pelos coflitos da guerra civil.
Muito obrigado!
Epic man new to the channel but you got mad skills man 💪🏻 love the channel and your style keeping it rolling 🎥
Thanks Troy, glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing episode Tim! Thanks for sharing and I hope to visit one day soon. All the best for your upcoming trips and safe travels 🇿🇦🍻
Thanks Aidan! I’m slowly catching up the backlog of content, but some huge trips already planned for this year!!
I loved every aspect of this video, seeing you achieve a childhood dream to watching you in editing action. The elephant footage was just phenomenal and beautifully captured with the highest of respect. I really enjoy your story telling as there is such passion and vast knowledge behind it all. What you do to make others aware of the wild life in Africa is rather amazing.
That’s all i want to do, so thank you so so much! 😍😍😍
Thanks for sharing this amazing video
So glad you enjoyed it! ☺️
Amazing work Tim, and thank you for showcasing this part of the world that has almost been forgotten due to our selfishness. I only came to know about this park after watching this video. Thank you for the background story and that final elephant Matriarch footage absolutely convinced me of what these beautiful animals have gone through - incredible story telling.
My absolute pleasure, thank you for the beautiful comment! 🥹
Thanks Tim, so special. My wife and I lived in Marromeu in 2006, on the Zambezi to the NE of Gorongosa. We drove past a the reserve entrance a few times and hoped and dreamed of a restored Gorongosa, so to see this is so encouraging
Amazing ross! It certainly is moving in the right direction! 🤞🏼
Awesome video
U guys are very brave.
Thanks
Thanks Aadil!
Mind blowing work. Your elephant scene is one of the most moving moments I’ve experienced in wildlife videography 👏👏👏
Thank you so much Brendan! ☺️
Great video..I just subscribed to your channel too….hectic Elephant behaviour…beautifully explained and portrayed…well done…
Is accommodation expensive? $60 per drive for a couple is a lot of ZAR😂 when compared to say staying at Shingwedzi and self driving…
Man Tim what an amazing episode🙌🏻
True storyteller taking us on a awesome journey. Thumbs up keep them coming🍺
Thank you!!! ☺️☺️☺️☺️
@@LostinAfrica 🙌🏻💪🏻
Good job you are doing. Thank you
So nice of you!
So glad you found the elephants! However, it breaks my heart that these amazing creatures been emotionally scarred and traumatised by dumb humans. I hope in time this beautiful park can fully recover. But, Who can blame them for being so aggressive!
I can not wait to go back to the park, they’re making such incredible progress. It is terrible that it was so bad for so long, but unfortunately that’s not an uncommon story in africa.
Great work as usual brother! 10/10
🙌🏻🙌🏻
When the land of Machubo, Macandza and calanga in mozambuque where given over to me as an inharitance from my great grand father king Folichi Macadza, i made it a vow to rebuild his kingdom
You’re a great narrator 👍👍. Keep doing the great work, and please go up to Kenya sometime.
Thank you! I have been to Kenya many times for work, but dying to do a proper overlanding trip there!
@@LostinAfrica You have to come to Kenya, it's beautiful 😍. Love from Kenya 🇰🇪
I was born in Nairobi and haven’t come back now in 30 years. I had booked 10 months prior to May 2020 a month before for a month long safari all over Kenya and a month before me getting there the world locked down😞.
I’m a nature photographer as well.
Tim😢, this is something else 😢😢😢😢

Awesome video! I wonder if self driving will eventually be an option once the wildlife begins to acclimate over time
I guess it depends on the business model they go after. I think at this point they are probably pushing harder to pursue a Botswana style high yield revenue model, but I am just guessing.
Nice work
Thanks ☺️
Thanks for sharing.
Gorongosa is very high on my bucket list.
Did you go to Zinave?
Unfortunately not, I was meant to go just after this to film a leopard relocation, and they just never got back to me. Unfortunately they called as I got back into SA.
👌
🙂
I was there at the same time as you
Oh amazing!
Hi Tim if you don't mind me asking have you got sponsors getting you through financially? Really appreciate you and what you doing. Let me know 😊
Hi Luke, I have some product sponsors, but otherwise no. All just a big very expensive self financed passion project!
Is this the only herd of elephants left in the whole park?
No there are a few herds, the website says it is up to 800, from a population of 200 that survived the war.
Great video. Just one concern, if you got large predators in the park
surely they should have introduced hyena and jackal already .It's an imbalance in nature .
They have since i was there! I think there was so much that needed to be reintroduced that it would be impossible to do it all at once. The Lions never went extinct, so i guess they are trying to restore the balance around them.
My home
What a beautiful home!
Those poor Ellies
🥹
There's no big tuskers between those ellies they must have witnessed their dad's being shot that's why they are traumatized 😢😢😢😢
Yeah I would imagine the bulls were targeted in particular! 😢
Nice video however the music is too loud over the voice over
Apologies, getting audio balances right is tricky and all about finding the sweet spot. One of many things we try make improvements to each and every episode!
