I love my Angy boy Nergigante showed up twice in the top 10. I just like he hunts other Elders to maintain balance of the ecosystem. He's also just fun to fight with how aggressive he is, without any dumb gimmicks.
Quick explanations for each placement! 1. Zinogre! Reigning from the third generation, despite originally being stuck in a game locked in Japan his game, MH Portable Third was the best selling MH game ever up until World came out globally years later. Sick design, awesome music, wicked ecology, debatably fun fight, he’s a clear fan favourite. 2. Nergigante. The mascot of Monster Hunter World and many peoples’ first big Elder Dragon hunt. The guy literally built to wrestle other elder dragons and feast on them to absorb their life essence to fuel his regenerative spikes covering his body, he’s just really cool. 3. Lagiacrus. Lagiacrus was first seen in the third generation alongside Underwater Combat where he was the mascot of the game MH Tri (or 3). Also he produces electricity which, when you’re fighting him submerged underwater that leads to some weird stuff. The reason he’s so high up in this ranking is because he hasn’t been in any of the recent fifth generation games, World, Iceborne, Rise, or Sunbreak. People really want him to come back and many are cheering for his return in Wilds. I am too, I miss the guy. 4. Valstrax. An Elder Dragon, mascot of the game Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. He was the face of the 15’th anniversary game and is just a stellar guy. He has rocket boosters, for wings. Rocket Powered Elder Dragon. 5. Gore Magala. The mascot of MH4, this thing’s discovery was chaos as we had no idea what this thing was and apparently it produced a black purple fog virus that infects other monsters and basically gives them omega zombie rabies and become extremely dangerous. Hunting this thing down and destroying it was paramount to protecting the ecosystem from complete collapse. 6. Velkhana. Also an elder dragon, Velkhana was the face of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the expansion to World so that’s where most of their praise comes from. Also they’re our only true ice based elder dragon that’s actually a dragon. 7. Nargacuga. Mascot of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite in the second generation, a classic fan favourite. Fast, agile, stealthy, and just overall a very solid classic design that a lot of people really like. 8. Fatalis. The quintessential god of monster hunter. This thing is hardly an animal anymore, far too intelligent, exceedingly powerful, and dozens of myths and legends we don’t know are real or not. The sighting of this thing is an all hands on deck, destroy on sight, it is too dangerous and is almost an existential threat in the eyes of the guild. 9. Ruiner Nergigante. Remember Nergigante and how he ate other elder dragons? This variant ate so much that bioenergy crystals started forming on top of his biological crystals, so now he just hurts even more to get hit by! 10. Alatreon. Master of the five elements, another first class threat like Fatalis. Where Fatalis specialized in extreme firepower, Alatreon’s manipulation of all the elements makes it a living natural disaster that must be monitored and stopped any chance we get. We have no idea what this thing is capable of, all we know is that it prefers to be alone, but if it gets anywhere near a populated area we better be ready to fight a force of nature itself. 11. Stygian Zinogre. An arctic subspecies of Zinogre, this one uses dracophage bugs instead of Fulgur bugs, dragon over lightning. A lot more aggressive than its blue cousin. 12. Abyssal Lagiacrus. A rare subspecies of Lagiacrus found in the deepest deaths, it is horrifyingly massive and can unleash devastating shocks of electricity. Hasn’t been seen in a long time since unlike Lagiacrus, this guy is locked in his submerged den and we haven’t had underwater combat since the third generation on the Wii. 13. Primordial Malzeno. The last monster introduced before Wilds was revealed, Primordial Malzeno is by far one of the most intelligent elder dragons in existence. It defends its turf, the run down citadel, from the quirio’s control, red blood sucking flying leech lamprey things. It protects the ecosystem from catastrophe and harm, fighting massive threats and is one of, if not the only monster the guild has actively spared as our interests align and it seems to understand that? Also very scary in combat, fights more like a Paladin than a wild animal. 14. Mizutsune. A member of the fated four, Mizutsune is a leviathan that produces a special substance that is basically soap which allows it to slide around at high speeds. Normally they’re quite docile but in mating season the males get very upset and aggressive. 15. Old Fatalis. This thing’s existence isn’t even canon. It does so much weird paranormal stuff we don’t even know if it’s actually really out there or if we all just hallucinated its existence. Controller of blood red lightning and a horrifying eclipse in the sky surrounded by a swirl of clouds, this thing is terrifying. Said to be the strongest monster in the world. Wonder if we’ll ever actually see it one day. 16. Safi’Jiiva. Another first class threat, Safi has the power to rip raw Bioenergy from the earth and use it to heal itself or fire blue burning lasers of destruction. Its most notorious attack is Sapphire of the Emperor. Hide or die, because if you don’t this thing is turning you into ashes. Alatreon has some kind of beef with this guy, not 100% sure why. 17. Brachydios. Not quite the pickle you were thinking of but equally as cool. Brachydios was the face of MH 3 Ultimate and his biology is nuts. Covered in obsidian armour, it farms and houses a colony of green slime mold on its body. When in combat, it licks its hands to use its saliva as a primer to activate the slime and force it to reproduce, the result of which being a massive explosion as the mold spores try to disperse. Literal explosive punch dinosaur. 18. Namielle. An elder dragon that controls water and summons lightning. It will try to drown you and cover the entire field in water before unleashing a wave of electricity, and we all know what happens when electricity hits water. 19. Shagaru Magala. Remember Gore Magala? Turns out it was an adolescent and shed its skin. Now it has eyes and also full control over its Frenzy Virus and is now an actual golden god raining a plague across the lands. 20. Crimson Glow Valstrax. A Valstrax that is undergoing the effects of an overabundance of Dragon Energy, it has gone insane and is now extremely violent, ruthlessly attacking random creatures for no reason other than an insatiable bloodlust. Valstrax normally fly so high and fast they avoid conflict, but this guy seeks it out.

Unsurprisingly every monster on this list is either a final boss or a flagship or a variation of that monster. Flagships are the monsters on the box art. The only I’m not sure if they were a final boss was Old Fatalis.

Lagiacrus is amazing! Scared the hell out of me as a kid, he felt impossible to take on. Especially since you have to fight him underwater for a lot of the hunt, where your movement’s hindered. Entering his domain to take him on is terrifying lol.
I do wish they hadn't done variants separately. I get that some of them are technically different monsters, but it took up a few slots when there are literally more than 200 monsters to choose from. In the end, I'm just glad Nargacuga made it as high as it did!
I believe that Rajang, the monkey you dislike, just barely missed the cut for top 20, high 20's I believe. I personally wish they didn't have variants of monsters in the votes since it skewed votes between the original and the variants, but very impressive for all the top 3 monsters to get in the top 20 twice essentially.
I don’t love Zinogre, but it makes sense. He’s beloved, especially in Japan. P3rd is still the best selling MH title domestically to date, so it’s no surprise.
