This video is all about getting gravity on your side when giving birth! Using the acronym U.F.O. (upright, forwards and open) I talk about the positions you could use to make birth easier. Most importantly, I explain why it's best to avoid lying flat on your back.

Currently 38+5. First time Mom. I am 4 centimeters dilated and my cervix is 70% effaced. I’m so anxious, but excited to give birth. I feel so empowered watching positive videos and experiences. So ready to meet my baby girl. 💕
Update. Had my baby girl 12/14/21. No medication or medical intervention at a birthing center. Gave birth on all fours. Labored at home as long as i could. Breathed her out, no pushing necessary. Had an amazing experience. I’d do it again in a heartbeat! 💗
Omg I'm 38+4 today! With my first baby, congrats on your baby I love reading positive stories ❤️
Another reason why birthing on your back makes no sense… My midwife, pregnancy courses and many other sources have been saying that lying flat on your back is not good when you’re pregnant and you should avoid sleeping on your back, due to a crucial vein that can get blocked. Actually lying flat on your back is very uncomfortable when highly pregnant. So, why would it suddenly be ok to birth on your back o.o
For some places applying these amazing methods can be possible only in home birth with midwife or solo home birth. I wish more and more countries would allow women to behave freely during their labor in the hospital, but it seems that we are one the loooong way to achieve this...
I feel so sad for women who can’t have the birth they want. I spoke to an English woman who had a traumatic birth in Italy (I don’t know if all hospitals are like this but this one was.) They wouldn’t let her do skin to skin, they took the baby from her straight away and instructed her to rest when all she did was stress and demand her baby back. And she was told to just put cream on when breastfeeding hurt.
I doubt my county would allow someone doing birth position other than lying on their back...
this fears me..
i wish my midwife would let me do what my body wants... still scared tho
@@AzyTheKitty If thats the only option you have, you can ask if you at least can be in a semi-upwards postion, supported by pillows in your back.
@@lizzybakams1955 I already gave birth, lying on my back, but i could lift my head, that was all, it was okay, rather easy❤️ thank you😘
@@rhg3212 Now wonder why italies birth rate is so low.
Without upper hypno trainning I instinctively used the yoga position (sitting cross legged) for my 1st because (it's my every day most comfi position). I was deeply breathing and rolling all my upper body while focusing on a not painful area of my body to divert the pain and it WORKED! at some point all my fears were gone and my cervix opened. I'm 30wks pregnant with my second and I'm more confident and positive, I know I can do it :-) Thanks for your videos! it´s so much comforting me in the idea that i have to lessen to my instincts
Love this advice! My first birth, in a hospital, I was laying on my back; due to having taken an epidural, but I was not encouraged prior to the epidural to experience different positions. Doctor had a great view, but it was hard for mama to recover post partum.
Love the videos. Although I listened to the advice about not giving birth on your back but after a couple of hours of pushing out the head, I eventually succumbed to the midwives advice to try being on my back (slightly upright) and this worked a treat... first birth, no tears, almost a 9 pounder... just for those out there who might be afraid to try being on their back, if the alternatives aren't working!
I told my midwife I feel like I need to take a crap. She said that's the baby ready to come out. My midwife had filled the bath up with water and I tried to sit down to give birth but I felt much more comfortable standing up holding to the side of the tub. I never imagined giving birth standing but your body knows.
True.. our body knows best.
It's heartwarming when the midwife understands that you know what's best for you ❤
I cannot stop watching these!! They’re amazing & perfect for me!!! Thank you so much.
Oh yes I will do thank you. I’m ready to go any day now so these are amazing for me. Baby no.4 but will be the first without epidural (I can do it, I can do it!) 😍
Hi there! I just started watching your videos... 10 days before my baby no. 2 is due, planning a VBAC. Love how you explain clear and straight forward.
When I had my first baby 12 months ago, i was in labor for 36 hours and I gave birth on the usual bed, back down. It was extremely painful and I felt like escaping from that chair! Now I am 3 months pregnant and I'm dreading giving birth! I live in italy, and hypnobirthing is not something you hear about here. Thank you for your videos!!
I have been robbed by covid from being to enroll on the course you provide. However you have given us mothers the next best thing with the access to information and guidance for hypnobirthing and for that I am so grateful! Thank you!
This was amazing help for me along with the breathing techniques - my last stage took 2 mins and was the less uncomfortable stage strangely! Thanks so much x
I'm so lucky and blessed to have found you. Bought the digital pack, and your book. After two traumatic labours I am hoping to have that third one that I never thought would happen at the age of 46 I will be able to apply all your amazing teaching! Now need to find myself a midwife....
Hi how did it go?
I rest as long as possible in early labor, then walk a lot when I’m too uncomfortable to rest. But the pushing phase is always really fast for me and being upright after transition, especially on a birth ball or squatting makes the pressure way to strong. With my last birth (3rd) I ended up lying on my side to push and it worked well to reduce what might have been excessively fast pushing (it was still quick!).
I had to be on my back essentially the entire time because my water had broken at the start of my labor and if I was upright my daughter's heartrate dropped too much during contractions because of the position of the cord. I could basically only rely on breathing techniques to get through it. I also had to push on my back. It didn't take long for her to come out but (possibly because she came out quickly) I had a severe tear. Honestly though, I was so tired by the time the pushing was happening I probably would have been on my back regardless. Really hoping for a different experience this time around!
Absolutely love your perspective! This progression of everything going horridly wrong was my first birthing experience, but the second was incredible because of this kind of helpful, instructive guidance and number 3 is about to be as awesome!!
Animals allow gravity to take hold, humans need to follow suit!
Have just been watching your videos back to back and love what you're doing. Have you thought about creating a video program for anyone that lives outside London and Devon? I'm not pregnant yet, but have been getting a lot of signs in the past two weeks that I'll be pregnant a lot sooner than I thought and would love your knowledge packaged up as I live in Australia. Just thought I'd mention it as I feel you could target a larger audience. Sending you so much love xx
The Positive Birth Company That would be amazing! I'm from England but I live in Thailand and I'm having my baby here - being able to learn more online would be great.
Love your videos full of positivity, short and to the point thank you
Would you recommend trying to stay upright throughout labour (i.e. from early labour onwards) or is it only important towards the end of labour? I have just purchased your digital course pack and am loving it!! Thank you 😊
You are so beautiful, your skin is glowin 💕💕
Can you be more specific on which positions are best to give birth? You said on a birth ball, but that's not when you deliver, that's before. Which UFO positions are best for the actual delivery?
It makes so much sense...but I was not able to give birth any other way than lying/half sitting.
Tried kneeling...did not work at all, my knees started hurting really quickly!
Do they hurt more than the birth?
THANK YOU!
While researching birth throughout history, I find it very ironic that as soon as we started laying on our back, women then started having more issues giving birth. I guess women 100's of years ago knew what they were doing. I saw one book talk about women using kneeling pads and another would then "catch" the baby.
Any advice for a VBAC after 2 C-sections? This is my third birth.
So hypnobirthing isn't for someone who wants to have an epidural....
Yes you can use Hypnobirthing for all births. Hypnobirthing is an evidence-based antenatal education program where you learn about how labour and birth works, your options in various birth places settings, a framework for how to make informed decisions, what to expect and a toolkit to help keep you feel calm and relaxed throughout. The full course on zoom with us is approx 12 hours. This is just one 3 min clip sharing one piece of advice. Although if you do have an epidural, being in a supported UFO position, as this video describes, will still make it easier for your baby to be born and reduce the risk of you tearing and intervention becoming necessary than lying flat on your back. Hope this helps.
@@thepositivebirthcompany thanks so much for the response. Can you have an epidural and be in a position that isn't on your back?
@@alartlart yes! There are lots of options with an epidural, including what’s known as a ‘walking epidural’ but also equipment in hospitals that can be used to support you in a UFO position with an epidural. If you outline your wishes in your birth preferences document, your healthcare providers will have a duty to support you in your choices. A Hypnobirthing course will help ensure you are properly informed about everything and able to navigate your labour as birth feeling confident !
For some women, lying on their back is the optimal position.
I love your videos. I’m pregnant now and due in July. When you give birth (or at least in labor) in the upright position, what happens if you have gotten the shot? (Pregnancy brain, I cannot think what it’s called!) won’t that prevent you from moving around since you’re numb? The more I learn about this the more I DONT want to give birth in a bed! What other options are there in a hospital setting?
The Positive Birth Company Yes! After I commented I remembered it’s called an epidural 😂 I’m looking into more info about not using epidurals, and I’m thinking that’s the route I definitely want to go. It actually makes me a lot more excited about giving birth and for some reason I’m less nervous. The hospital that I’m delivering at has the squat bar and I know they have the birthing ball and a big tub (I’m not sure if it’s the same as a birthing “pool” or just a big tub that they let the mother relax in for labor). Thank you so much for the reply, I thoroughly enjoy your videos and can’t wait for more. They’ve definitely helped me so much already ❤️
Great video but some hospitals will not allow you to squat
You need to tell them what YOU want. Be a b*tch about it, its your body, your baby & your birth.
