Decorah North Nest | A tribute to DN7 & DN8

- DNN | This video was meant as a first week video, but turned into a tribute to both eaglets as they past this afternoon (5-25-2018).
Official statement about the cause of death by RRP: RaptorResour...
These eaglets came from a second clutch (the egg in the first clutch broke), so it was late in the season for these eaglets.
Cause of death is not certain probably the hot weather and many gnats were part of it.
DN7 hatched 5/18/18, 7:04 AM CST
DN8 hatched 5/20/18, 10:11 PM CST
Both died 5/25/2018
drs Rob Bierregaard (osprey expert):
"Remember that nature is not cruel. Being cruel implies intent to harm someone or something just to do harm. Nature is unforgiving, harsh, and often random. But it's not cruel."
Soar high, little ones!

Official Statement from Raptor Resource Project (RRP): "We are sorry to announce that both eaglets at the Decorah North nest died yesterday. To recap: Mrs. North laid one egg on February 25. That egg broke on March 16th, but she reclutched on April 12th, laying one egg on the 12th and another egg on the 15th. DN7 hatched on May 18th and DN8 hatched on May 20th.
Why did the eaglets die? As we learned last year at Great Spirit Bluff, blackflies carry a pathogen that overwhelms the immune systems of young birds. Today's blackfly strike, combined with the extreme heat and humidity, was more than the eaglets could take. The North reclutch was inspirational, but we all worried that the late hatch might negatively affect the eaglets - and it did. As John pointed out, what happened at the North nest shows how important the hatch window is in the larger picture. Insect hatches that overlap the vulnerable developmental stages of eagles and falcons can have devastating effects.
Even knowing that our eagles are truly wild, it is really hard and unfair to watch them seemingly succeed, only for their eaglets to perish. Sherri expressed what all of us are feeling when she wrote: "We were given a miracle gift and got to know two eaglets who showed us their fierce and feisty nature for seven and five days...that is what I will hold onto, and the determination and dedication of these parents." Both parents did their very best to shelter their eaglets from the gnats and the weather. We will continue to love and cherish our eagles and falcons, collect information to help us understand the challenges they face, and act on their behalf. Goodbye, DN7 and DN8 - it was wonderful to know you.

*tears* ...Such a heartbreaking day for all of us who check on, and view the North nest. My heart is in a gazillion pieces. Fly free precious babes. Never will be forgotten. Love and prayers from Minnesota. 😢😞
What a beautiful tribute. Laughing thru my tears. They will be so missed. My heart is aching still. :(
Thank you for this. I am crying right now as I just discovered our loss. Very sad.
Thank you so much for the lovely tribute! It’s hard to watch when bad things happen to our beloved eagles. However, we are truly blessed to have this window into their lives, to learn and appreciate the beauty and strength of these magnificent eagles! Rest In Peace DN7 and DN8. 💜🦅💜
Well said, you're very welcome. Thank you
Eagle Cam thank you for this video. I can't watch it right now but will save for later.
Goodbye gentle DN7 & 8, rest easy in Eagle Heaven.
And so is DN8. Rest in piece little ones
Eagle Cam
Damn, so freaking awful. Better they go together and we get the sorrow under sooner. They were, and are, gentle souls.
At least they're not bothered anymore by the gnats. At least we have enjoyed them for a week.
Thank you so much for the Beautiful Tribute!
You're most welcome!
Thank you for making and sharing this 💔
Thank you
This is heartbreaking. I only started watching several days ago but got attached to these little ones.
I'm so sorry Maraki. We've had much joy as well in other seasons, but since its and unedited view we may face things like this as well. Hard to watch, each season has brought some tears next to joy.
so saddened by this as many years as Ive been watching its still never easy to see these beautiful babies not make it...hope the weather is cooler next year and the gnats not so heavy so sad
Normally the eaglets are hatched earlier wich give them time to get stronger around the time gnats come around.
Thank you for sharing this vidio..I'm heartbroken over this, these two Bobbleheads seemed to be doing very well through Thursday, very hard to take💔fly high little ones, your mom and dad did the best they could
Sweeties are flying with the angels now!
I loved your tribute video very much, Sweet babies with much spunk, was saddest watching the decline from the bugs. It was over faster than I thought it would be . grateful for that ♥♥
Thank you so much Brenda, they were so cute!
This is so well crafted to honor the DNN nest in 2018 - Thank you SO much!
You're most welcome, John. Thank you for your time today with Christian Sasse, I enjoyed listening to it!
Sometimes the forces of nature can be brutal. Very, very sad to see this happen, but hopefully these two beautiful eagles and their own force of nature they possess will prevail with more eaglets in their future. Whats going on at the nest at the fish hatchery, I have not seen the mom in the nest in 24 hours. Hopefully I’ve just missed her.
God Bless them. They tried both times this year. Its so sad. They were such cuties too😢
Yes, its heartbreaking :(
This broke my heart
Its very sad
Was not happy this am when I turned on the live cam and it was obvious one of the little ones was dead. Had to go out for a while and on my return discovered that the second little fighter was gone also. Sad, but nature is brutal. I wondered if the gnats were affecting the babies in some negative way because mom was being endlessly tormented by the insects. Two good parents the victims of bum luck. I'll look for the next eggs!!! Beautiful birds!
Gnats are probably the cause of death, Dad sneezed in a way we've never heard of before (due to gnats in his nares)

So sad 😥☹️
Yes it is...
Precious babies. 😢😢💔💔. So very sorry Mom and Dad. 💔💔🙏🏽🙏🏽
That is adorable. I loved the change of music. Nice job!!!👍👍😁
Thanks dear Gail, :-))
Eagle Cam you are welcome sweetie
💕😘😱😇😩😭💔. Thank you so much for this beautiful video.
You're welcome
I thought they both were having breakfast all good...
Guess not...so sad...to many eagles lost this year!😢
It came as a shock, all looked fine this am and than suddenly they became weaker in just a couple of hours. Its nature, but its hard to watch though.
How is their death determined? Does RRP obtain their bodies and do a necropsy?
RRP is watching the footage right now, there is not yet a statement but if its out you can find it on their facebook page.
Eagle Cam Thank you. So sorry for your loss.
Thank you
Probably the heat and gnats. The gnats and black flies are awful this year.

This makes me cry.
I saw both chicks being born. It’s so sad to see them both pass away. If the parents had laid the eggs in April would their chances of survival would have been a lot greater?
Probably. The amount of gnats and hot weather may have caused their deaths. RRP is watching the footage, I'm awaiting their statement.
The only reason I asked was because there’s another nest in that area and the chicks there are approaching fledgling stage.
ekgrulez1 its a good question and due to hot weather and the gnats probably true that this second clutch was to late for such young eaglets.
They were both doing so well, both eating equally and size matched pretty good. Such a shame that the nest was over taken by insects. I see why eagles start nesting so early in the year, they're smart and know when to start nesting. RIP little guys.
Thanks for the video. Now heaven has 2 angels more.
Excellent! thank you :-)
Thank you, Fire Fly....such adorable eaglets!
Right now it's pouring rain on mom,so sad
Tak przykro....taka strata..brak słów...….
Anyone else spot the black thing that just appeared on the branch at same time red arrow appeared ? Looks like a black ratbwirh long tail
Don't the eggs usually hatch sometime in April (as in the other nest)? That way they would avoid the heat and insects until the eaglets were bigger and stronger. babies this small don't have much protection from them.
That is correct, normally the eaglets would have been stronger with more feathers to protect them from gnats. But stil awaiting RRP's official statement as they are watching the footage on the moment.
She lost her first clutch of eggs and these were from the second clutch of eggs she laid. That is why they were so late in hatching. Very sad day for RRP and all who watch and love this nest. God bless the Norths.
Aww very sad watched the babies from hatch.. they was just too little cuties . fly high little ones 🌈🐦🐦💕
moj Boze! tak mi przykro!
Isn't there a natural pest control for those gnats? If so, put it up around the nest so next year they don't have same troubles, also I see where gnats are starting to attack the other Decorah single parent birds. Marigold flowers send some gnats, biting flys packing, also Baby Powder keeps them away, not sure but mint which is a perennial might be one to work as well.
Snowfire those gnats are there every year, there is not much to do about them because they like the same habitat as eagles. The eaglets hatched later in season than normal (second clutch) and were to young to deal with them, next to extreme heat and humidity.
Snowfire's suggestions make sense though. Something environmentally safe would be worth looking into.
SMThecla2 Its up to RRP. On dr Sasse’s show on UA-cam John Howe gave answers on those thoughts 🙏
Here is that video: ua-cam.com/video/KwYrwRsj09g/v-deo.html
😢😢
Horrible. These parents tried so hard this year. Was it the gnats?
Yes, probably, but RRP is watching the footage right now and I'm no expert so I don't have an answer.

Thanks. I saw the eaglets covered with gnats (or flies) the day before yesterday and had a bad feeling.
It was gnats, heat, and humidity.
Are you sure DN7 and DN8 spent only one Week and less with us. Cause i react as if i knew them years ago… thanks for this beautiful tribute.
Yeah, they were adorable and so welcome! Thank you!
I am beside myself! I realize that nature readjusts itself as necessary but they are so cute and doing well. Ugh!! 😞😞😣😣
Yes, nature can be hard to watch for us humans...
im soooo sad and its been days....i need a new addiction

The poor sods and it all seemed to be going OK.
Nature is brutal.
drs Rob Bierregaard (osprey expert) said it beautiful:
"Remember that nature is not cruel. Being cruel implies intent to harm someone or something just to do harm. Nature is unforgiving, harsh, and often random. But it's not cruel."
But that said, many are heartbroken by this loss, it can be so hard to watch.
Nature is an unforgiving mistress
sad
Just terrible.
I think climate change may impact as well
