Capacity works pretty much how it does in current starfinder. I think Player core should rename or rework pf2 capacity which has always seemed weird and confusing to me as a starfinder veteran. Maybe a term like semi-automatic for the starfinder default, or manual action for the pf2 default could work to differentiate the two types of capacity. I also think it's good that guns that can keep firing without reloading are common in starfinder. In current starfinder everyone has a gun, and no one reloads in combat and that is a good thing.

Perhaps they could use “bolt-action” for PF2e’s version of capacity? It fits with needing one action to rack the next round, and that would allow the same trait to carry into Starfinder for a sniper rifle or the like.

Star Wars d6 did star ship combat very well. Different players would have skills for various ship systems. Off hand, Shields, Weapons, Pilot, Astrogation, Navigation. If one player was using two skills, then they would be using the multitasking penalty.

They aren’t using the repeating trait because they don’t want every ranger weapon in starfinder to take 3 actions to load a new magazine. This is why there is a separate reload entry.

Skittermander are basically sweethearted little cooperative nice guys. Not too bright, but with a knack for teamwork and coexistence to the point that they didn't realize they were invaded by the Vesk. Their reproductive cycle is something like being cuddled to death by a parasitic wasp as they find a host and implant larvae.
The Skittermander homeworld was invaded by the warlike Vesk, the species of our model Soldier. The Vesk demanded surrender, to which the Skittermander said, "Sure thing, buddy! This is fun! Anything else we can help you with?" It led to the Skittermander - so cooperative that they never figured out the Vesk wanted to rule them - becoming basically equals with the Vesk as they took over all the non-military jobs. It is a "who conquered whom?" scenario with the helpful, kind Skittermander being the pals and "sidekicks" of the massive, warlike Vesk.
In the introductory adventure Skittershot, you play four Skittermander working for a Vesk captain. Naturally, you're his little buddy sidekicks until he gets in over his head and needs your help. Then you step up to become a party of Skittermander adventurers.

The Vesk also ended up giving them a lot of administrative/civil/desk work because most of them don't like doing it (they prefer the combat roles) so there ended up being a sizable amount of Skittermanders in the Vesk bureaucracy. This lead to theories in-universe that the Skittermanders have ulterior motives in being so helpful.

On the point of why pathfinder guns would logically be archaic, the most rational answer I can think of would be that they are black powder weapons. Black powder has much less explosive force than modern smokeless gunpowder, and older firearms would likely be severely damaged if you attempted to use modern gunpowder in them because they weren’t designed to handle that much force, and smokeless gunpowder requires a much more advanced production process, making it a more likely dividing line between archaic and analog firearms.

I noticed something quite interesting about "Steady Up." I agree that the initial look is pretty underwhelming, but it opens up a fancy combo. When you use that action, you can then spend the last two actions on your turn utilizing the "Ready" activity, setting a customizable reaction to unleash the salvo for something like "As soon as I can target X number of enemies, I will unleash a Salvo" or "As soon as my ally is no longer going to be affected by my Salvo" so you can optimize your effective area.

    My thoughts:
Archaic weapons: There is no indication of magic being weakened here; the magical runes still confirm their full effects. The issue for resistance here is the result of the material the weapon is made of. A Steel Sword hitting "Future Space Metal" armor is not the same as "Future Space Metal" sword hitting "Future Space Metal" armor. Weapon and Armor material composition having unique effects Is already a PF2e thing. So all we are saying with "Archaic" is that this old metal doesn't work well against this new metal. a +1 rune is still adding a +1, striking is still doing striking, and flaming still does its full magical damage. Its just the effect of the raw materials clashing that has the resistance. If you had a sword made of the "Future Space Metal" it wouldn't be archaic, just analog; and thus wouldn't have the resistance. A PF2e fighter can use a PF2e katana but have to deal with the resistance issues against SF2e Armor; however they could use a SF2e katana and not deal with that.
I hope that makes sense and doesn't sound pedantic or condescending.
Armor Storm Subclass ability to stop enemies attacking allies comes from the danger of being near one. If they have a 10ft burst weapon, and your within 10ft of them to attack their allies, then your in-danger. They can just drop the bomb and hit multiple targets around itself. Like having a damaging aura. You don't want to get near one, and if their allies are standing just behind that Aura its hard to get to them safely. This is good for defending your back line. Meanwhile bombard, is to avoid your melee party members while getting to do your big attack; protecting your frontline from yourself.
    Punishing Salvo:
Primary Target activates, if you choose to, via an AREA or AUTO-FIRE Action. Then lets you choose to target AC of one of the targets in the AOE.
If a Weapon has the Area trait: It can ONLY make 2-action area-fire attacks.
If you use Punishing Salvo, then you can make a second attack with an Area weapon against a single target.
This means both Unweildy AND Area weapons are given a second attack by this feat.
Scattershots have the Area trait, but not Unweildy; and they can attack twice via this feat.
Stellar Cannon has both traits and can attack twice via this feat.
in the future Im sure "Unweildy Automatic" and just "Unweildy" weapons will exist; giving a large number of weapons this can be used with.

    • @JJGYET
      @JJGYET Рік тому +1

      My secondary comment:
"Analog" should be able to take Runes. The computer systems in Tech weapons should be upgradeable through other processes, while analog should be rune upgrades.
Other than that: I just feel like too many people are taking the Resistance that archaic weapons deal with as a slight against runes and magic; while those things are themselves still actually fully functioning. +1 adds +1, striking adds striking. Ect etc. None of that is negated, and its befuddling to see people saying this is some how effecting that magic.
Should the runes be applicable to non-archaics; yes.
But the runes aren't being depowered, just the weapons their on.

The starship combat system needs a full overhaul. The two main problems are the ship building being far too easy to game, and the combat itself being extremely boring for half of the characters. Currently everything in starships is bought with a single resource, and in most cases buying a better turret weapon is by far the best way to spend it. If you build that way, any fight will be extremely easy. A fun ship has different weapons in different arcs so there are interesting choices to make during combat. But if you build that way you waste a lot of build points without any benefit when compared to just improving the main turret. In combat every character chooses a role, and there are about 7 if i'm remembering correctly. But only three of them matter. The gunner needs to hit the enemy, the pilot needs to beat the opponents initiative and put the ship in the right position, The engineer repairs the shields after being hit. The other roles give minor bonuses that rarely impact the outcome of a battle. For example one of the actions the science officer can do allows the first attack if it's a critical hit (meaning a nat 20) to do a specific critical effect. But 19 out of 20 times that doesn't do anything. The existence of the current system also forces every character to invest in one of a few skills or risk being completely useless if there is a starship combat.

Powered Armor was kind of weird in 1e, with it being slightly below heavy armor AC-wise, but it replaced your Strength and Speed (and sometimes size) with it's own, and allow you to mount weapons onto it. If they want to keep it's unique effects it would probably need to stay it's own armor type.
That said, of the Pf2e classes, Fighter and Champion would be the ones I'd most expect to be Proficient in it.

I'm sure if Paizo just hadn't mentioned this at the time of the stream, but while the systems are *compatible*, they're not *balanced* with each other. For example, it will be trivially easy to acquire a Fly speed and at low level in Starfinder for example. They're also *not* a going for a combined setting, so a PF character finding their father's sword useless when time warped into SF probably isn't something they're even considering while making this.

I think the reason why civilzations are moving towards modern weapons is training time. It takes a lot less time to train a person to the same lethality as well as their physical characteristics matter less.
Training a person to be an expert swords/bowmen takes a long time, while give a person an few weeks months and they will likely be able to shoot well enough wiith a modern rifle to be just as effective.
Armor is made to protect against certain threats, medeival armor is good against medeival threats, it won't protect as well from a gun/rifle shot. Modern bullet proof vests are made to deal with bullets not so much with swords/arrows/bolts. Future/energy weapons should be quite similar.
I can see where they are coming from though, with more modern is just better, but there maybe an opportunity to make armor/weapon choices matter more by using DR/ weak values and armor upgradability/composition.
My main question is though if the Darkness spell nullifies Laser weapons? :)

RE: Soldier Saves, Archaic, & Runes
    Soldier Saves:
PF1 Fighter & SF1 Soldier only had Fort as a good save, PF2 Fighter is the outlier. From another perspective, specializing in AoE damage effects makes the Soldier more like a PF Arcane or Primal caster than a martial, so only having 1 save isn't out of line.
    Archaic Weapons:
1st, its not that tech trumps magic, it's that advanced trumps primitive. Magic would have also developed over the hundreds+ of years between old Golarion and post-gap pact worlds.
2nd, Amiri would not be useless in a Starfinder 2e game, she would just need to get a giant greatsword manufactured with the new methods and materials. Bronze weaponry outperformed Stone weapons. The conquistadors found that even their padded jerkins would stop most native weaponry. It's the same idea with an even higher disparity in tech levels.
    Equipment runes:
In SF the emphasis is on getting the better model, and most weapons & armor have multiple versions that play the same role as fundamental runes. Property runes are 'replaced' by weapon & armor upgrades, which can be technological, magical, or even a mix of the two. It looks like they are replacing Weapon Fusions and Weapon Augmentations from SF1 into a singular Upgrade category like with armor. That's good, there are a lot of redundancies & unnecessary complexities in SF1 that can easily be fixed by using tags instead of categories, or just dropped altogether.

People try to do startreck type combat which isnt fun
You get like 2 roles that do 80% of the work(mostly is the pilot and the gunner) and other 2-4 roles that have like 1-2 things to do..
You also get the problem that you need a number of players for thr game for thr ship combat..so if someone is missing shit goes down quickly.
Star wars combat its where it is
Have the players in different ships going from the main ship.
The main ship can be piloted whit 2 players but the big ships will have more of a support role/long range cover so its will have more things to do .

You make good points about the roles.
For me though, I just feel like ship combat needs to be more abstracted. Starfinder isn't a miniatures games, the combat is simplified, abstracted, and streamlined. Combat feels fast, combat isn't trying to be a simulation.
With Starship combat, They tried to create a miniatures style combat system that, while it works and has some merit, completely misses the point of combat abstraction and tries to lean into simulation territory. That's fine, but there are other games for that and if people want a deep ship combat experience they should play those games.

Ready Reload is something I want in PF2e for Heavy Crossbows and such.
If we're talking multiple-armed creatures eventually gaining use of multiple sets of arms at once, how about a Soldier Wrestler with Armor Storm grabbing someone then using their AOE on themselves?
Overwhelming Assault does feel kinda strange. The reduced MAP only really applies to the 2nd attack--the 3rd attack is an extra -5 on the 2nd attack, rather than an extra -4 or -3. Getting to that 3rd attack is pretty niche (Close Quarters Greatsword, for example, multiple sources of Suppressed in the party, haste, etc). Meanwhile, although every +1 matters, does it though once you're into the deep minuses? Once the chance of crits are off the table, and there's no difference between a fail and critical fail, the marginal effect of a +1 is a lot smaller. It's also just so much more confusing to calculate.
The thing I don't get about Capacity: the mismatch between battery capacities and the capacity ratings on weapons of similar commercial/tactical/advanced ratings. Maybe we'll eventually see some sort of weapon where there's a higher capacity count, but for now, it just looks funny to see capacity 40 batteries when it kinda looks like there's no weapon which can use it.

If they wanna stick to the archaic trait, I'd personally just have the armor give resistance equal to half its level against archaic weapons. This lines up with damage resistances PCs usually get. A 5th level suit of 'modern' armor gives 2 resistance to archaic weapons. This could still add up against trivial minions without making a low level creature practically invulnerable to the attacks. 8th level modern armor is resistance 4, etc. Then it can cap at 10 at 20th level.
If they want to stick to it the way it's designed now, the armor would either need to be 'uncommon' so the players can't just immediately snatch it up first chance they get, or would need a drawback to merit using standard pf2e armor, especially in a mixed setting. If the GM goes hard into Starfinder it probably wouldn't even matter at that point.
It just feels like a trait that punishes hybrid storytelling. But it's really hard to know for sure without seeing their plans for Starfinder armor. It's quite possible 'modern' armor may not even open up until the late game, and all armor prior would be pretty basic jumpsuits and the like. The scaling might work just fine because it's misunderstood when 'modern' actually comes into play.

DM/Authors/Designers are at fault for dropping the Silver Standard after PathFinder 2e Character Creation. Perchance the PFc¹ edition does better.
Nevertheless, the GM has the ability to entrench the Silver Economy (SE). Simply when discussing costs & payments, translate to Silver Pieces (sp) when below 10k sp. When exchanging/selling goods, provide silver.
If characters use gold, treat it similarly to using $100 bills. Merchants are going to inspect each coin and possibly weigh each gold piece (gp). The payment may even require the owners approval. Also, word shall quickly spread about gp getting used by strangers.
The PFc books & Adventure should also present costs in SP up to 10,000 sp. Anything greater is given in gold bars worth 1,000 sp.

I wish they had slid Electrum Pieces in the monetary system. Still have a CP have the purchasing power around $1.00. The., EP fits perfectly as about $100 betwixt Silver & Gold when:
      10 CP = 1 SP ~$10
      10 SP = 1 EP ~$100
      10 EP = 1 GP ~$1,000
      10 GP = 1 PP ~$10,000
Prices still should be given in SP, but EP become the big tip from adventurers while GP is for nobles while PP becomes the currency of nations.
       ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄
As is certain EP are collector pieces having been minted for special occasions, by groups or famous individuals and to commemorate historical anniversaries. Governments often mint them to affect the economy. During festivals, its specially minted EP are set as a GP in value. The year after, merchants equate them as SP. A millennia after, collectors offer to exchange PP or more for one.
Also, EP are often minted in larger sizes than standard dime sized SP. This definitely increases the value yet merchants often treat them as SP but hold onto them.
Historically, Hunting Lodges are known to mint EP to flex. These EP celebrated successful expeditions, financed the next campaign or commemorated fellow hunters now beyond the Judgement of Pharasma. Today adventuring parties rarely know to establish a Hunter's Lodge let alone gain favor by minting commemorative coins. Consider adding EP the size of silver dollars as clues in a future campaign.
When adventurers spend the coins found in ancient troves, savvy merchants accept them quietly. Later, they'll trade them to collectors. There is more than face value for a CP from Absalom with the profile of Aroden minted while the god resided on Kortos Isles.

I'm just going to throw this out there...why not allow runes on tech/battery weapons and allow tech/Starfinder upgrades on rune/Pathfinder weapons? Why shouldn't they just do it? For flavor I would love to see this.
"Did you see that dude with the enchanted energy sword going up against a cyborg wizard with a spelldex (digital spellbook)?!' 'Oh yeah he was almost done for until his buddy stepped in with that kinetic powered, electrified, gyro stabilized great sword (my childhood dream sword haha)!'

Weapon tiers are too clunky. I don't want 7x the number of page space dedicated to listing the same weapons. I, and my players, really disliked haveing so many version of the same weapons. It never felt good to upgrade, it always felt like you had the weaker version of the same weapon, and the weapons lists could make someone dizzy because of how many lines were repeated.
We just need a tech version of fundamental runes. I don't mind "Tracking 1, 2, and 3" being the tech version of "potency", but there's no reason I shouldn't be able to upgrade a gun to add tracking. One of the fundamental fantasies of Sci-Fi is the interchangeability of things. It should be easy to purchase and slot a "Tracking" module into a weapon, in fact it should be EASIER than using a fundamental rune since this is a setting where technology should make such things easy.
We need to steer clear of "tactical" and stuff like that for the tech version of the Striking runes. Instead of having totally different classes of the same weapon, there should either be an object we can slot into the weapon that enhances the damage dice or some process we can put it through that does it, or maybe both and we can choose which way we enhance our weapons (much like how there are bio, tech and magic version of all the implants in Starfinder.) Whatever method upgrades weapons, they should mirror pathfinder 2 fundamental runes.
To put things another way, we already have a nice streamlined system for weapon upgrades, and that's Pathfinder 2 fundamental runes. For Starfinder 2 to really be compatible with Pathfinder 2 it needs to lean into those. In fact, I don't even think that 'modern' weapons should be disallowed runes at all. I think it would be fine if there was the same version of runes we use now, why would a society with magic have stopped using those methods anyway? Along side those runes, there can me more tech focused methods.
Lastly, I saw that one of the tactical weapons had a longer range than the non tactical version and we should avoid that. It's fine if there are upgrades that can increase range, but Tracking and whatever tech version we get of Striking should ONLY increase attack rolls and damage dice just like Pathfinder 2.
    /r
Starfinder 2 armor should not have resistance to magical archaic weapons. In fact, maybe they should just get rid of the archaic trait, but if they must have it they can say that magic weapons lose the archaic trait or something.
    Good video, thanks!

I agree with most of your very good points but the last one.
I really dont think ancient weapons should be as efficient against sci-fi armour ^_^
If your player likes swords give them a Vibroblade or which ever variant you want in your sci-fi

They say in the document that they are going to have ways to upgrade weapons without having to buy new ones. There absolutely will be a rune equivalent for Starfinder 2e.

Agreed, I hate the system for having 10 different entries for the same weapon just because it's a blue, red or white laser... just have a module that changes the laser colour that changes to the damage die or increases the dice. Give them different levels like runes and there you go. Job done. Then in the future you can add additional weapon, item or armour modules that do different things.

I agree with the part about having too many weapons. I can see a niche for splitting out consumer-grade weapons from military-grade (perhaps that's just the Simple vs Martial vs Advanced split that PF2e uses), but keeping something like the PF2e rune system would be preferable to each subset of runes getting it's own entry in the stat blocks.
I do mostly like Archaic, tho. There should be power creep between pseudo-medieval fantasy and space-future-tech. Archaic is an easy way to do that. That said, if Archaic-resistance was reduced to 5 somewhere around 6th level magic weapons, and ignored by 10th level magical weapons, I'd enjoy that. Such a rule would mean that an ordinary longsword from the militia armory isn't going to be effective against a future marine from space, but Excalibur would still be a potent sword.

I like your feed back about Archic. I too like the idea behind it but not it's implimetation so it's nice to see folks trying to find some other option than just making them blanket weaker against Starfinder armor.
Military grade weapons should probably just be different weapons though and not different version of weapons that already exist. There's a reason we have different weapon categories in Pathfinder 2 (simple, martial, advanced) and weapon levels (which restrict access to certain weapons or at least slow down access) and weapon rarity, and price. Those systems already work to signify when a weapon isn't something regular folks can get. As an example, a military grade weapon could be level 5 uncommon, and advanced with a description that it's a military grade weapon or a trait to signify it if it's necessary.

Man as some one who started playing the first sf i have some noob complaints.
Buying items: 20 tiers of items is stuiped.
I need to re buy most my equipment every level(and dont start me whiy weapons and armor)
So i need to read 100+ items every level( i dont but i feel the game ask me to do it).and the fact every items have like 15 lins of text doesnt halp..i seen items whit 140+ words description. and not complexe..im level 5. Why a rebrither descriptions is so long paizo? Why?!!!!
While i understand si fi gams are more item focus there should be a balance.
Ship combat: its treck style .its will never be fun in the long run

Lets pray and hope Starfinder stays starfinder, its own game and hope they have the designing capabilities to prevent it becoming Pathfinder in Space.
So far I like the the Pathfinder Design of the Soldier at Page 4 of the Playtest and the upgrades for the weapons. Thats about it.
    - I don't like the change to the Keyscore from DEX or STR to CON.
    - I like the gradual increase of saves over the levels in SF1 compared to trained, expert, master and Legendary in the Playtest version SF2
    - I like the 4 skills + INT skills over Intimidation and 3 skills+ INT
    - I like the modularity of Gear boost, Fighting styles and feats
To me, sadly, it feels too much more like Pathfinder in Space than SF2. This been said.
I need to see all classes and their advancement up til level 20 and I look forward to the next Pathfinder in Space playtest xd

On the saves thing, everyone adds their level to saves so it's not like they only go up with Expert/Master/Legendary.
