This still gives me goosebumps man. I remember vividly when I first listened to illmatic in like ‘08. My whole life and love for hip hop changed. Crazy it came out in ‘94 same year I was born. Fucking classic! One Love.
Now this is rapping! So many rappers now only say gibberish and call it bars. Those fake ones are just reading lines. I have a lot of respect for the rappers that rap as a passion and an art rather than just to make yourself look "cool". I love my black culture. It's beautiful and revolutionary
I couldn't appreciate this when I first heard it as a child, but this song is very special. It walks a fine line between showing love, and respect to brothers in jail while not glorifying crime and violence. Actually shows how they're victims of it too despite their role in it, but doesn't judge. Brilliant, nuanced chronicle of black life in the city, no other rapper has even gotten close.
21 year old from suburbia, never had any accurate representation of black culture. nas is truly one of the best to ever do it, his ability to paint a picture of society which does not have regard for the black community has truly impacted my view on race relations. God bless nas
Crazy that 27yrs has gone by so fast. Look at rap now besides a few hip hop has lost its roots. No story telling, no individuality, beats all the same. It's a shame man. Glad I grew up in the greatest era of hip hop.
@@froey198033 Was in elementary school when this album dropped going into the summer of 1994 had to be around 8 or 9 years old remember hearing old these songs. By 1999 things were different I was about 13 years old and was all the way in on the I Am album.
This song took me to a place. Like… almost put me in a trance and I felt like I gotta front row seat to the story he’s telling. Even 30 years later that scene at 5:15 is so haunting with the sound of that beat playing. Just so grim
Nas is still my top 3 of all time. Such a legend
This beat is legitimately insane
Nas was ahead of his time ⏲️. 🔥 🐐
Q-Tip's production is fire 🔥.
Nas & 2pac are the Kings of rap
100% agree only lyrics in music rap that brothers and sisters goosebumps for real
Bought the whole album twice. One in vinyl, and one in Compact Disc. Never regretted it. Best album ever.
The best 40 bucks I have ever spent.
One of the most Smoothest Beats in Hip hop History...
1:05, yas lorddd she fine
I didn't even know there was a video for this song. Until just now, of course.
reeves. reeves reading that shows that you’re slow

I just know this video in November 2019. :(
Me too
@@besiprimitif9513 i just know this video from yesterday :(
I couldn't appreciate this when I first heard it as a child, but this song is very special. It walks a fine line between showing love, and respect to brothers in jail while not glorifying crime and violence. Actually shows how they're victims of it too despite their role in it, but doesn't judge. Brilliant, nuanced chronicle of black life in the city, no other rapper has even gotten close.
For me, this is one of the greatest beats of all time.
FunkyTechnology I fuck wit it too but idk
@@stephenheath8465 Sorry to be extra but it's a marimba being sampled not a vibraphone!
✍✍✍🖒🖒🖒
It's hard to listen to this song because it makes you want
to go back to that time and enjoy that moment again.
Feels like a precursor to Phone Tap. Same boom bap vibe with a different two-step💪🏽
21 year old from suburbia, never had any accurate representation of black culture. nas is truly one of the best to ever do it, his ability to paint a picture of society which does not have regard for the black community has truly impacted my view on race relations. God bless nas
Salute to you
Goated storytelling, production and Nas flow is straight heat one of the best rapper who blessed the mic.
Eh he is barely top 50 theres too many rappers out there mane
Q Tip and his perfect beats. My favorite song on the album.
He told the story so good he didn’t even need to make a video 💯
27 years ago , one of the greatest albums of all time was dropped !
At the time I was to young to understand what it meant but as I got older in the 90s it was different. But 1999 I was all the way in on who nas was and what he meant to NYC. By 1999 things were different I was about 13 years old and was all the way in on the I Am album.
The third verse >>
Tyrone Fowler entire song is 🔥 but yes that third verse was incredible.
Watch Belly
Real long and important
where does the 3rd verse start and end?
One of the best story tellers of our time...one love.
All props to the artist and whoever did this R.i.P MF doom check this version out😎ua-cam.com/video/wC971yyntMg/v-deo.html
My favorite Nas ALBUM
Greatest albums ever ❤️🤌
That last verse is my favorite from him. The imagery n flow is incredible when he's talking to the kid from the block. I always rewind that part
He right tho whenever they start shooting it’s always an innocent bystander never the target he was dropping knowledge on the kid, my fav verse too
At the end of belly he pretty much acts out that verse when he pulls up on youngin in the projects
GOAT doing goat things
Best beat ever
He the best that ever came outta nyc ever 🙈
Favorite Rapper of all time🐐
One of the most important hip hop songs ever made
tru indeed! lol
This song took me to a place. Like… almost put me in a trance and I felt like I gotta front row seat to the story he’s telling. Captivating, from lyrics, to the beat, to Q-Tip saying one love, his rhyme scheme, his cadence. This song alone is a true masterpiece. Couldn’t imagine hearing this when it first came out
“Then I rose, wiping the blunts ash from my clothes, then froze only to blow the herb smoke through my nose.
And told my lil man ima go cyprose. There’s some jewels in his skull that he could sell if he chose. Words of Wisdom from Nas tryna rise up above, keep an eye out for Jake shorty wop, one love.” That last bit lives in my head and I recite it randomly. Still get euphoric after all these years.
This song only has Q-Tip for only 30 seconds, but he still puts his heart into this song.
The first time you listen to this album, you know that it's the one of the greatest if not the greatest albums ever made. Nas= True Legend and one of the best Mc's of all time.
I’m 14 and I just listened to the Illmatic. I didn’t realize how many of the songs on the album I’ve herd with my dad when I was really young, and almost all of them brought back nastalgic memories and vibes. Definitely can say this is my favorite album.
Nastalgic will be the title of his next album
Nas The Goat 🎤✊
This song and this video is literally like the pure raw form of what hip hop really is.... This song makes me feel to my core man and the video is just pure nostalgic magic.... It's truly sad to see the state hip hop is in....
