    My ranking would probably be
    1. No Quarter
    2. Rain Song
    3. Over the Hills
    4. The Song Remains the Same
    5. Dancing days
    6. The ocean
    7. The Crunge
    8. D'yer Mak'er
Many of the ones in the middle are interchangeable for me, but No Quarter and Rain Song are definitely my favorites.
When I was 12, my guitar teacher introduced me to this album, so I have a lot of memories of learning it with him. No Quarter was also his favorite and was one of the first ones he showed me. I also remember my mom initially did not like me listening to his album because the cover freaked her out.

This is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin albums. Couldn't agree more with the number one pick. It just feels so dreamy and surreal to listen to. You are absolutely spot on about the song taking you to places when you listen to it. My personal top 3 would be
    1. No Quarter - obviously
    2. The Rain song - Jimmy Page's sense of melody and harmony is unreal here. Simply a beautiful ballad.
    3. The Ocean - Never a dull moment in this song. Time signature keeps you guessing, epic riffs and main solo and the key change in the end is icing on the cake.

I think the vocals sound the way they do on No Quarter because they slowed the whole song from D down to C# with the tape machine. Hence why they play it in D live

I remember I was around 19 (1985ish). I came home maybe around midnight and was most likely under the influence of "something".
I remember lying in bed with my trusty transistor clock radio next to me listening to WNEW 102.7 in Queens when Dancing Days came on. It was my first time REALLY HEARING it. Now that I've been playing over 30 years I understand what I was hearing but hearing those slides (with a slide) was a religious moment in my life that I will never forget. 57 now.

Can't really argue with that order. The Crunge for me is just one of those jams you do as a band for a laugh and probably should have been swapped out for the actual title track. Jimmy's guitar work on this album is stunning. Acoustic, electric, so much variation, style, feel and tone. Pure musicianship.

Tool's cover of No Quarter is equally as haunting. Tool plays it in slow motion too. It's on the Salival album. The Ocean is probably one of the few songs I can still sort of play after all these years.

  • @DirkRadloff

HOTH has grown on me a lot. When I heard it the first time 30 years ago I thought, that it is overproduced and sounds artificial in parts (There is a rumor, that Plant's voice was sped up to make it higher). I only liked three songs and very much preferred the live-versions. But meanwhile I love it because - as you say - I have realised how great some single parts are. The best example is the drum-groove of "The crunge" (You nail it by the way!). All in all I think they reacted on this album to common trends of that era: Progressive Rock, Funk and Reggae. I want to add to your analysis, that Jimmy Page copied some trademarks of Pete Townshend in "The song remains the same". My personal ranking would be like this:
    1. The Rain Song
    2. No Quarter
    3. The Song Remains The Same
    4. D'yer Mak'er
    5. Over The Hills And Far Away
    6. The Ocean

Yeah. Over the hills is my favourite as well.
The ending is actually played on a Clavinet. I've always thought those wailing notes at the very end were slide guitar. But it is actually synth.
And apparently jimmy's guitar echos are coming through but i think it is mostly buried in the mix.

As I was watching your rankings I was thinking that you put some songs too low. Obviously your list is based on your tastes and that's cool and all. But when I put my list together I realized that this album is really hard to rank! Also, the album is just packed with awesome songs, so like you said, even the lowest rated songs are still great. I will state though that The Rain Song is my #1 and The Crunge is my #8. After that, my mood could drastically re-order this list. Here's what I've got right now:
    1. The Rain Song
    2. Over the Hills and Far Away
    3. No Quarter
    4. The Song Remains the Same
    5. The Ocean
    6. Dancing Days

#1 Over the Hills and Far Away
Initially I got bothered when you dissed the synth in the Crunge because the fills in it sound pretty unique. But then you played the 80s TV theme part and i LOL'd.
My early memory from this album is that the inside art when accompanied with No Quarter scared me as a child. Which is why perhaps im mostly bored with No Quarter; it ranks pretty low for me. However, when i heard and saw Page & Plant perform it live it really made me appreciate it more.

I’ve been doing No Quarter into Machine Gun, since I was a teenager, because they share a similar riff, that can work in Em, or tuned a half step down.

  • @MojoPin1983
    @MojoPin1983 10 місяців тому

Your comment about the synth introduction in The Crunge sounding like something from a ‘70s television show is exactly the same reason why I have always disliked that part of the song; it always reminded me of the theme song from Sanford and Son. I love the first minute of The Crunge, but once that synth kicks in, it’s all downhill from there. Not to mention, Plant’s elongated vocals, toward the end, are one of the rare times where his singing actually annoys me.
