- This product information video displays and discusses how to download and update the firmware on a DDX9704S. The basics of the procedure itself will be the same on all KENWOOD receivers that end in "4S", including the DNX994S, DNX874S, DNX694S, DNX574S, DDX9904S, DDX6904S & DDX6704S.
For everyone wondering how to update it. Make sure to format the USB to NTFS. FAT32 does not work at all for some reason.
Thanks I thought I was going to have to replace the radio but was able to just update it.
If anyone is still have issues with this, format your thumb drive to NTFS file type. It worked for me. Any questions feel free to leave a comment
Thanks man, wouldn't have thought of that.
Thanks. The instructions stated FAT32....I would not of thought of this.
Great video and firmware updated with no issues. thanks!
Check the "update instructions" download on the same page you download the update to the PC. I had to go to standby/then go to settings/F/W update/ then plug the usb in and hit yes.
@KENWOODUSA I am having trouble updating my dnx8170dabs. I formatted a USB and added the unzipped update files and followed the instructions. After inserting the USB to begin the update... nothing happens. I have tried everything that I can think of, including:
1. Trying multiple USBs (I have tried 3)
2. Reformatting to FAT32
3. Checking to make sure that I do not have the latest software already (I don't)
4. Making sure that the files are not zipped (they are not)
5. Changing the file structure as someone in the comments said they tried
Can you please let me know what else could be the issue. This is quite a frustrating situation and I have already spent hours trying to fix this.
Sixty and Me I’m having to the same issue. I have the DNX575S. When I read the instructions from their site, one thing it says it is to make sure that you don’t put the file into a folder....how the heck do you prevent it from going into a folder??? 🤷🏼♂️
same
try usb with usb 3.0 or 3.1
Worked great for my ddx575bt
do I need to format the USB beforehand or can I just move the file in there with all the other stuff I have on there already?
yes, you cannot use a USB without formatting it to Fat 32 and clear of other files. The update will not work otherwise. Thanks!
Hi, I insert the flash drive but I can't get the update screen just keeps booting with the init screen, turn off and again the same , my unit is a DNX5710BT . What can I do ? I've done the unit reset as is says in the user's manual. Can you help me please ? Thanks
Wil that say i dont must open the file before i copy to usb unit
Just copy and plug in too the unit..🤔
Hey man, nice video for support, Any idea how can i see what model is my head unit since all. Can see is 86271AJ300 or FXDA09EREF2

Does it matter what OS we are using? I believe it is windows only?
I don't believe that this is a serious question, but I'll answer it anyway:
It doesn't matter which OS you are using. Just make sure you've got a program installed with which you can unzip the downloaded file.
For Windows 7/8/8.1/10 you can use the built-in program from the Windows Explorer or 7zip/WinRAR.
For Linux - Distro doesn't matter I'd say - just install unzip using "sudo apt install unzip" (or equivalent, like yum/pacman/ ...)
On MacOS you can finde an Unzip-Program in your App Store.
So I don’t own a laptop...........,is there any way I can do this with a Samsung tablet?
Basically as long as the usb/flash drive is blank right?
If u can put files on usb with it then yes
I have just tried this procedure for the DDX9703S. As described, it does not work. After the unzipping, you cannot just drag the top level folder to the flash drive. Instead, you need to open the top level folder and then copy and paste the contents to the flash drive. Hope this helps.
My file keeps saving as a PDF. I tried switching it to Word and it still and won't update on my head unit. Solutions?

I updated my DDX5901HD, in my 2012 F150 and now my Maestro RR doesn't work. I can't see vehicle gauge info, steering wheel controls stopped working, etc. Any ideas?
You may need to reflash the iData Link module or check connections between the receiver and the module. Thanks!
@@KenwoodUSA I did that already. Didn't help. What I found is that the update wiped the serial number from the radio (shows up as dotted lines on the screen). So the Data link can't connect because the serial number doesn't match....I had to flash the data link and use the Kenwood serial number that is on the sticker on top of the radio, but since the internals of the radio lost the serial number during the update, they don't match so the Data link can't connect. Basically, I'm screwed for doing the update

This didn't work at all for me, using a number of USB drives and formats. My current application version shows 1.2.0009.1900. Is this too old? I have a DMX7704S.
Chris, When you are on the Support Page and viewing the update files on the same page locate the "Update instructions" and it will highlight what version you should have compared to what may be installed. Thanks!
@@KenwoodUSA did you guys delete my response? I just said I was on the right page and asked if it was possible to incrementally update from previous firmware versions?

My unit has just been a blank start up screen with the word kenwood on it. Its this same model as the pne youre featuring, does this mean the firmware needs updated?

I have installed ddx9704s into a 03 tahoe but takes minutes for radio to turn on or sometimes doesn't even turn on. Any suggestions please. Thanks
You most likely have an connection issue with the installation. please check the wiring configuration and connections are solid and wired correctly. its also possible you may not be using the correct harness since an 03 Tahoe had several variations of the factory wiring. What harness are you using to connect the receiver? Was the Tahoe equipped factory with Bose premium audio, navigation, or steering wheel controls? All Tahoes of this year generation also have a Data system that requires a module to maintain reliable operation. Thanks
I also like Kenwood to talk with Razer about software support. My razer phone isn't running android auto with the head unit despite it having Android Oreo operating system.
This would be a limitation of the phone itself, not the receiver. This receiver will support any phone that is Android Auto ready.
Installed a new dmx9707s, mic isn’t working, will the latest firmware update fix it?
If the mic isn't working it is typically a physical connection related issue. Take a look at the backside of the receiver and make sure that the mic didn't accidentally get connected into a different connection spot and that it is fully seated to the receiver itself. Hopefully this helps!
@@KenwoodUSA just wasn’t plug in all the way! Also if a firmware update won’t take does that mean the receiver has the latest update?
@@murdamechanik If the receiver is fully up to date then it will not take an update. So this could be one reason that it wouldn't update yes.
are the9703s and 9704s basically the same?
The DDX9704S was the next generation, and does include several new features vs. the DDX9703S.
I have a Kenwood DNX893S unit and am stuck on the “Updating SoC Image.” step in the update process. USB was formatted to FAT32 and completely erased before copying update files.
Thank you for reaching out Troy Salas. Lets see if this will help. Try completely going though the download process again, (delete old download) copy it to a completely different USB flash drive. Insert that USB flash drive into the receiver while its powered off. Power the receiver back on and the update should resume.
Thank you.
@@KenwoodUSA I appreciate the response! I did use an entirely different USB flash drive--a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 1GB formatted to FAT16 from the age of the dinosaurs (my high school years)--and it miraculously worked. Hope this helps all the customers who may be stuck as I was.
If it doesnt work, is that means mine is already updated? FAT32 with the file wont upload at all.
It either means it already has the latest software or that the update is on the USB incorrectly. Make sure there is no zipped folder on the USB flash drive.
I extracted the unzipped files to stick. I change mode to standby. When i connect usb stick the unit automatically switches to usb mode and searches for music. DDX375BT
The process is slightly different for the receiver you have. on the KENWOOD support page where you download the application Firmware, there is a (Be sure to read and follow the instructions in the "2018 Navigation/Multimedia receiver Firmware Update Guide.") message and below I!s the setup and update instructions specific to the DDX375BT. This should help with the update from there. NOTE be sure to update BOTH the "Application Firmware Update" and "DAB Firmware update" these are BOTH required to perform a successful complete update. Thanks!
Is the firmware 1.8.0008.1600 the last version for DDX9704S?
You can check here: www.kenwood.com/usa/car/support/
I've spent hours with no success.... DDX6704s tried ntfs/fat32. Check the head unit and I'm on older version :(
Sorry to see you're having some issues with this, please make sure to pay attention to the file formatting at the 2:30 mark in the video, if the file inside of your USB appears correct and you're still experiencing issues please contact our customer support team at 1-800-536-9663 for further assistance! Hi how to flash kenwood mdv-z700 pleas help
The MDV-Z700 is not supported for North America, please contact the support team for your region or country. Thanks!
Does it matter if the flashdrive is fat32 or ntfs?
Yes. Please format it to FAT32. Thanks!
Cheers!
there is no usb input on my ddx 6705s?
The USB input is a hard-wired connection that comes out of the back of the receiver. You may check your glove box or center console to see if the wire was routed there.
Will this work for dnx9140?
The DNX9140 uses a slightly different process. You can reference directions on our website here: www2.jvckenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmware/2009c/eng.html
Doesn’t work to me. I been trying to connect Bluetooth but won’t let me

Hi all ... i have dmx 7018 bt unit in my car , i put a password 2 years ago and i changed my car so when i installed the unit on my other car it a asked for the password and i can not remember it ... can u help me solve my problem plz
Hi,
Since this receiver is not a US model we would recommend reaching out to your local KENWOOD dealer to see if they can assist you.
@@KenwoodUSA i am in lebanon and here in lebanon we dont have kenwood company anymore they closed
Does this still work? I have the DDX9016DABS and have downloaded the available downloads (System Firmware and DABS Firmware) and tried both separately on an 8GB USB and after I put the headunit in standby mode and then connect the USB nothing happens at all. I can tell the head unit is readying the USB as the lights on the USB are on and flickering.
The DDX9016DABS is not a North American product, please refer to the nearest KENWOOD dealer, or contact KENWOOD tech support for your region for more accurate tech assistance. However, here are a few tips when it comes to updates, Make sure you format the drive to FAT 32, when downloading the updates try a different browser (Chrome, Mozilla, etc), be sure to extract files from the zipped folder, and maintain the file layout order. Some USB drives WILL NOT work for updates *different read and write speeds* so try multiple USB drives, and last when trying different USB drives don't use the same downloaded update, Delete the update and download it again from the Support page. (you want a fresh file for each attempt just in case). Thanks!
I just attempted this with my Kenwood DDX9703S. I formatted the brand new USB flash drive, installed the _unzipped_ file to the flash drive,
went out to my car, hooked into the USB port provided when the stereo was installed. Turned setting to "STANDBY" ... and nothing happens.
Clicked on "USB" and it says "No media Attached".
The message asking to update the receiver will not appear for the following most common reasons: An incorrect update is on the flash drive, a zipped folder is on the flash drive, the usb flash drive being used is not compatible (try a different flash drive), or the latest update is already on the reciever.
I had one of two problems that resolved my same issue.
I reformatted my FAT to FAT32 OR someone at Kenwood has the update in duplicate folders. I had to fix the folders:
USB
Update version folder
Update files
Not
USB
Update version folder

@KENWOODUSA I need to revert my firmware. Please just send me the link. The new firmware locks up my iphone and I am unable to use car play. This is a brand new unit, which worked flawless before the update.
As much as it seems like this is the case, it is simply a coincidence. Can you try testing with a different iPhone and report back? Also, please bypass any USB extensions/retensions if they exist.
How can I roll back to the previous firmware? Since I updated to the August 2018 firmware on my DDX9704s, it's been malfunctioning badly. I need the prior firmware.
There are no known issues with the newest firmware...what specifically are you experiencing?
@@KenwoodUSA the radio makes loud pops, the volume jumps all over the place and it suddenly gets very loud and distorted, with the distortion remaining even when I dial the volume to 1. Also, it keeps randomly dropping the connection to my phone over USB. One minute, I've got Android Auto. Then, it drops and I get the message that the device is unsupported.
@@KenwoodUSA I should add, I've had the radio in to the installer to troubleshoot, and they couldn't find any wiring/power issues. The redid all the wiring (this time with solder and heat shrink sleeves). It still does it.
Ted, it appears there may be a few different issues going on. First, I believe the firmware is coincidental, as the change in firmware shouldn't have an effect on any of the above. As for the volume jumps, do you have a third party steering wheel control interface? This is really the only item that could be causing that issue. The distortion would have to do with external audio factors in the system (amps, speakers, wiring etc.). As for the Android Auto connection, the receiver will display the unsupported message when it is not receiving sufficient video data info from the phone/cable combination. This is typically caused/resolved by using different Android phone cables and/or eliminating any OEM or aftermarket USB extensions/retentions if they exist.
@@KenwoodUSA no steering wheel controls of any kind. No amps or any external audio equipment, wired direct to the factory speakers. They tested the speaker ohms, and everything checked out.
As for the USB cable, I've tried several. It happens with every one.
The radio is only 5 months old, I shouldn't have all these issues. I'm getting ready to file warranty. Can you please get me the previous firmware so I can at least rule it out? The issues started very shortly after I flashed the latest update.
These KENWOOD units are nothing but a gigantic headache for everyone that uses them!!! To finicky and a big waste of money in my opinion!!
Not been my experience at all.
@KENWOODUSA - just submitted on your site. my issues is a bit different. Im am still trying to update my firmware for my DNX773s. I have downloaded the firmware file to a Fat32 usb drive (have tried many different drives) I plug in the unit, and says there is an update available, and I press yess to continue. It goes through the update, Update SoC image, Update all, etc. Then it goes to the screen that says, after the system is restarted, the update will continue. The system reboots, and instead of it continuing, it go back to the first screen that says There is an update available, press ok to continue. I do, and same thing. Its like its already downloaded the update, but just needs to install it. How do I get this to update. Video here. quickbay.biz/kenwood/kenwoodIssue.mp4 . Please let me know, I spend great money on this unit, and need to get this updated as Android Auto is not working correctly. Thanks
This means that their is either a problem with the flash drives or the update. I suggest downloading a completely fresh copy of the update to your computer, then copying the unzipped update to a completely different USB flash drive.
@@KenwoodUSA It has nothing to do with the flash drive. I have also tried others with the same result. If it wasn't in the proper format, the Kenwood unit would not start the process. This is my 3rd Kenwood DNX over the years, and all but now, these updates have worked fine. Sending this in for service is not an option, and something I will not pay for.
Does android phones not work with this piece of shit? It's not working 😠😠😠
