  • To become more self-aware, sometimes you need a friend. Two friends is even better.
Brené Brown and Adam Grant swing by the podcast for one of our trademark conversations with no plan. It turns into a deep dive about knowing ourselves and how self-reflection is sometimes best done with others.
We also discuss identifying our values, the two types of narcissists, explanation-based parenting, and exercising judgment over our own judgment.
What’s a little metacognition between friends?
    This is...A Bit of Optimism.

Thank you, Brené, Adam, and Simon! I learned a lot in these 80 minutes! But what I loved especially, was that you practiced what you say and demonstrated that these things work! Experiencing Simon going from his tired and exhausted state at the beginning to a pretty energised state towards the end, showed me again, that doing something which aligns with your purpose (your Why) can re-energise you, although it is asking energy input! I hope, you Simon, had a wonderfully refreshing night after this!

This is my first (likely only ever) comment on any (of the many many) podcasts I have (and will) listened to because commenting on anything is just not my thing. Born across the pond in the 1960's, the last 30 years of my career has involved accidentally sharing the things that my small life has taught me with generations of would be British nurses in a small corner of the British NHS. I do not own a smart phone, have zero social media presence and would like the 3 of you to know that your willingness to share what you have learnt changes more lives than you could have planned for. Well done and thank you very much from the many you will never meet.

IMO this exchange corrects the adage - Great minds may think alike but they are almost certainly open to other great minds.
Generosity, care, dignity, curiosity, showing up are what great minds have.

I like that discussion about "explaining consequences vs disciplining". It's one of the most valuable of the many lessons I experienced from my parents being foster parents and receiving training (STEP) and passing on that wisdom to me as a foster brother to those that lived with us. My mother especially passed on that nuget regularly, that explaining consequences and the existence of "natural consequences"...it really made no room for "discipline". I could talk about this for hours...it has so many success stories and I try to help others hear about this whenever I can...it seems a way to pass on the wealth.

Love this in-depth discussion on such a difficult-to-grasp topic in such a lighthearted manner!
My humble attempt to describe metacognition is in 3 aspects : 1) be aware that our thinking (and learning) processes involve the use of different sets of systematic, repetitive steps in different situations (I learnt this from Harvard’s Visible Thinking course), 2) be able to keep track of when we are using which sets of steps, and 3) be able to consciously control the use of appropriate sets of steps in certain types of situations.
To me, people who are deemed to be “smarter” are simply those who consistently problem solve with ALL 3 components of metacognition. They may not even be aware that they are being metacognitive but I guess no one really cares about metacognition as long as the job gets done (especially in Asia where we value hustling over soul searching).
However, I’ve been asking myself these questions : Why are we spending so much resources on improving AI’s metacognition while not paying attention to human metacognition? Wouldn’t we as the human race achieve a lot more if we are more in tune with our own thinking and learning processes? Would improving human’s metacognitive skills help us harness the power of AI more effectively? 😊

We are all human beings and every one of us have our own limits, that we should respect. As an introspective person, after a big exposition to people, I need to rest my mind, to process and think about what I have learned from the experience. Then, I get recharged. I consider myself a learner and a loner. 😂 Adam, thank you so much for citing Gallup's studies and findings.❤Self awareness is essencial!🎉

and my take on re-energizing our body when we were overwhelmed or exhausted.. is just to go out and meet people! 9/10 I'll be blown away how rewarding the whole experience it is to me. like u said Simon, human being is a social being.. we just need to practice to be less thinking and to just do it! just show up to other people 🙌

Idk if this resonates when they’re trying to determine the emotion around 37:03 (also cannot name another’s emotion for them), but I think the most accurate word sounds like doubt. To me, doubt is the emotion when someone safe experiences threat of perception. It’s the rapid emotional response of losing connection to the body for protection and discernment. Betrayal would be applicable for someone coming in a declarative stance not open and curious. Betrayal subcategories anger following confusion, but doubt is a deeper cptsd emotional response because it affects reality.

I don’t believe in dependent relationships, I don’t think it’s healthy for a person to be dependent on others. I do believe in independent relationships. There’s a difference between in being irreplaceable and being indispensable, and being dependent.
Being independent means you think by yourself.
If a person understands their brain, how they think, how it works and understands their cognitive function, they are able to upgrade their cognitive function, they can do great things. Just by understanding yourself.
