Great video! Drum Factory Direct is a lifesaver when you're searching for that one part that no one else seems to have, and their customer service is amazing.
“You know, I love to tinker. But all the tinkering in the world isn’t useful unless it starts with a good idea. So, look around for a need, and start coming up with ideas to fill that need. One idea will lead to another, and before you know it, you’ve done it!!! See a need, fill a need.” Bigweld, from the movie Robots.
This video helped relieve so much anxiety about ordering from you guys. Please don’t take that the wrong way. I visit your website often and make shopping carts and wishlists but never pull the trigger because I think it’s too good to be true. Next time I get paid I’m buying the parts I need to build a snare.
I built an 9 piece stave kit out of quarter sawn sycamore wood using hardware from these guys. It turned out great but they discontinued the style/finish of lugs before I was finished so be careful and make sure they have enough in stock for your project and buy all you need in one go.
The comment at 14:05 is so true!! I recently did a drum build with Nordic cherry shells and tube lugs. It is amazing the way the tube lugs sing on the shells!! I was not expecting that and I am still playing with heads and hoops looking for the sweet ( sound ) spot! And yes, Mike i believe the wood shells as well because that's what I have and I definitely hear the difference! I actually changed the lugs on my 12" tom just as an experiment. The regular steel lugs made the 12 sound completely different! Not as much overtone ( ring ) to it. It's pretty wild!
I bought a 14x6.5 walnut shell, drilled it for brand new slingerland style nickel lugs, nickel hoops, nickel strainer and nickel plated tension rods . Tung Oil wipe finish, beautiful "hand assembled custom" under $400
Brass by itself is just a metal alloy. If you have solid brass lugs, they're going to add mass to your drum, but they themselves aren't going to vibrate independently: they're attached to the hoops and to the shell. Brass is used in musical instruments because it's relatively soft and easy to form relative to other metals. It was also more easily obtainable in previous centuries when brass instruments were being developed. Aluminum was a precious metal, surprisingly, and iron/steel were heavy. Nowadays, you're starting to see carbon fiber instruments that play fabulously.
Another very interesting video, Mike. Late last year I was taking my 20 inch Gretsch bass drum out of one of my cases and slipped out of my hand and landed directly on the wooden hoop. Wouldn’t you know it… It cracked. To get through the gig I had to swap my front hoop with my back hoop, and go 1970’s style no front bass drum head mode for the night. The next day I got online and found the exact hoop I needed from drum factory direct. It got here in no time at all. Pretty outstanding company.
I really enjoy your Off the Beaten Path series and this month’s edition just added to that enjoyment. I look forward to DFD’s new program where they compare different sounds that can be achieved by using different drum parts. Thank you for taking us on another wonderful drum journey.❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏❤️
You Guys are awesome I completed several Drum projects with your products over the years This video shows more offerings than your website I had no idea how many products you have in stock Thank You for your service Christopher Baier LI NY
Thanks so much for this video Mike. I love DFD!!! So glad that I could get to see their space. I recently found out about them when I had to fix up a vintage Rogers BigR Snare and Tama Swingstar Snare. Much love from India.
Nice to get a look in there. My local pocket drum shop has been good for my recent frankensnare builds, but I'm thinking about stepping up my game into some kind of public offering, and I've been wanting to open an account with DFD for awhile now. I've had their website bookmarked on my phones for at least a coupla years now. Always looking at the possibilities. They need to get some affordable 14" 12 lug snare hoops in stock, though...last I checked 😂
I think 12 lug snare hoops are probably challenging to find in general, but I assure you, their prices are among the most competitive you'll find anywhere.
I wished we had this in Europe too. Even if we could order from DFD the ship and prices makes it a though cookie. I know there is ST Drums, but that isn’t even close to DFD.
It seems like they're discontinuing a lot of items lately which has .e worried about the stability of dfd. There aren't any other places like dfd that have the amount of choices and good prices.
I personally think it’s more about seeing which products have been successful and which haven’t really created a demand. I think it’s more of a step the ensure long term stability by not investing resources into products that sit in the shelves for an eternity.
@@malonedrum I'm speaking specifically about the dfd brand tom isolation mounts and die cast hoops. Those items seem to me like they would be standard, popular items that would commonly be in demand. I've been requesting notification when they'll be back in stock for months only to find they're discounted. I'm very disappointed.
DFD RULES!
Agreed!

They’ve saved me so many times.

Well said.
Thanks for the episode! Mike is in my opinion one of the most important people in the entire industry right now
He absolutely is!
Yes he is and he's a world class drummer and a hell of a nice guy to boot.
I LOVE DFD!!! Huge visit, Mike. This is awesome. 👏🏻
Glad to hear it!

Certainly an effective way to do it!

I've definitely noticed a sonic difference for hoops and shells when it comes to different metals used, but all have their place.
it's like drum tinkerer purgatory. once you're in and playing it's impossible to leave :)
I managed to escape.

In the name of the father…

They’re a great resource for us builders!
Mike your videos are fantastic, I know your going to be a huge channel! Congratulations on your journey and enjoy!
Appreciate the support.
This is a pretty cool place. To think that someone is going to have almost everything that you need, AWESOME !!! Great episode
If they don't have it, probably nobody else does. That's for sure.
Great stuff… I could drum-nerd out there for ages.
Oh, I could have spent 10 days in there and not seen it all!
There is a great lack of what you do in Türkiye, maybe even in Europe. To find so many parts in so many variations... That would be heaven!
I believe they ship worldwide, FYI
@@malonedrum yes thank you, they say later in the video but I'll have to check the shipping prices

Very cool!
Mike Dawson was made for this job! He’s the ultimate sound scientist. Also miss him on the Mike and Mike podcast but Drum Candy is equally great.
Love Drum Candy!
Thanks for this. What an awesome place. I wish there was something similar in the UK!
They ship international!
@@malonedrum In that case I'll just have to get a big order together to justify the shipping and taxes!
cool episode mike! DFD is a great resource!
Thanks for watching!
Resurrecting a drum 🙏🏻

Pausing this to get a cup of tea and a biscuit to enjoy watching! We don’t have stores like that here ☹️

I didn’t know they were in Pittsburgh. Here we go Steelers Here we go! My Team 🏈
#GoPackGo, but I respect Steeler’s country.
@@malonedrum Love the Packers also. Named my youngest son’s middle name Brett after someone you might be familiar with.
I'm not seeing those single-braced stands on the dfd site. Might have bought one....
There's a number of DFD stands on this page: www.drumfactorydirect.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=4_1080_51

It could just be that the manufacturer isn't able to keep up with demand, also.
