Well since persona 3 reload was real and the original leaked clip showed it, a new jet set radio, and sonic frontiers beta footage I guess one of the zombie games is coming back
Yeah, it gets more and more glaring with every Genesis themed collection they release lol. A lot of their best games are left in limbo in Saturn, Breakfast and even arcade history. If making ports is THAT much of hassle might as well do what they did for Sakura Wars and just make new games for new audiences. Though I guess Sakura Wars is the exception as one of... If not... The only, Saturn original series to live on and have a legacy long after that console generation.
There's was also Project Diva Series with hatsune miku that you forgot to add, probably Sega's flagship franchise in the Rhythm Game Genre. But besides that, great video, I really enjoyed the look on every Sega Franchise that you did and even made me learn of some IPs I had no idea existed (The Sega graveyard it sure is a massive place).
I was kinda curious why it wasn't listed considering it was fairly big with 2 spinoffs and and arcade games, especially since sega has an interest in making more games for it in the future (I hope)
@ShiKyoakuma mainstay, project diva arcade got multiple ports to different platforms while being disguised as newer games while project sekai (its most recent spinoff) is still fairly popular for being a 2 year old game. I doubt sega will stop producing miku "project" games for a while until project sekai dies down and they have to make another game
While I ultimately agree that Etrian Odyssey is in the "It exists" tier, I must remind that it is the only Atlus franchise besides Persona and SMT that always appears in online surveys and interviews with the studio. The collection also kept itself in the top 30 sales for Japan during 5 weeks straight, which is remarkable for such a niche series. Small as it is, this series deserves some respect for the consistency!
Yeah, that collection is the only Atlus related thing i have any interest in right now. Persona has burned me too much now (to sum it up, I'm someone that also is a fan of Persona 1&2 and uh... They clearly don't like my kind lol) and other aspects of Megaten just don't have the same charm in characters that Persona had make it stand out since the beginning from what I've seen, so I don't really go there though i respect the roots. Aside from that, i also love Radiant Historia, the actual best Atlus RPG
@@MagillanicaLouM Man, Radiant Historia is an AMAZING experience. I don't know if it was actually developed by Atlus, but their more niche/obscure stuff is the best
@@ivanfg4188 Honestly all I feel is being impressed the game is still happening at all, companies need to stop announcing shit they know won't be coming out for multiple years lol.
Gotta admit, it's hella sad seeing many IPs which failed and left dormant. But at the same time, seeing all what SEGA done makes me happy. Seeing how, despite the odds, always brings cool things, litteraly you can't stop seeing many huge things they done. And specially, since meeting Sonic, and other franchises, makes you realize how cool actually SEGA is. So yeah, thank you for reminding me that, despite everything, Genesis does.
Well... it's Sega. Most death franchises from other developers keep dead forever, but with Sega, we never know when they will have a stroke and make a sequel 10y from now. It's not much, but it's somerhing. I think??
@@joaofernandes8164 Yeah, plus I think it was exclusive to only ps4 during that rough launch, but once it became available elsewhere it flourished. I don't think lack of any news for VC is sales related, they may just be thinking of how to continue. One thing that might be the series biggest roadblock, is that with the exception of VC2, all the main games take place at the same time, in the exact same war, just seen from different perspectives of certain branches of the protagonist army. Which means, story wise the series hasn't moved forward since like 2010, and they may just be trying to figure out if they wanna make that jump again and move forward or keep VC5 in the same period. Me personally, i thought 2's story was kinda lame so i wouldn't be surprised if it was a badly received aspect and thats why they turned the clock back since or just straight up made a new universe in the spin off Valkyria Revolution.
@@joaofernandes8164 It sold 1 mln on all platforms, but after many price drops for 5 or 10 $ (in 1,5 year). Game bombed after release date (no wonder game was released without marketing with Monster Hunter World in JPN, and with Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest XI in West, and they repeated same mistake later with Sakura Wars on PS4), and VC4 was worst selling game in series in Japan. Valkyria Chronicles sales in Japan (first week, only physical): VC3 (PSP) - 102k VC2 (PSP) - 94k VC1 (PS3) - 77k VC4 (PS4) - 67k Triangle Strategy in first month sold 800k only on Switch, and that was a new IP. If Sega want think seriosly about this franchise, they must took risk and give developers much higher budget, and much better marketing, and throw into a quieter period away from AAA and Square Enix games. And they must jump into more modern engine, because Canvas engine is now outdated. Many people complained about VC4 it looks like expansion / DLC for VC1.
I'd love the anime to be offered to Netflix or at least CrunchyRoll in the west both to watch it but also to drum up interest. There's no reason this beloved franchise can't be elevated to a wider audience with a bit of TLC from Sega, just like Yakuza
this 2 part series has made me really appreciate how many of these old franchises live on in the Yakuza games, even if it's just a playable minigame in the arcade
Space Channel 5 really needs a new game. I just love the music, aesthetics and the addicting gameplay. Ulala herself is also a really fun and stylish protagonist. The second game in particular is amazing. And no don't even mention the abomination that was the VR game. We need an actual Part 3. If it's done properly, if could be a massive hit with today's audience.
Ever since finding out the only reason for the hiatus was cause "they couldn't think of how to go forward without being too similar to the first 2, but VR offered a change of pace they needed" i really wondered why they didn't just shoot for something during the Wii era. But i found out through this video they apparently DID and we just turned down for some asinine reason. Maybe since they did Samba de Amigo on wii they felt it was unnecessary (even though they play nothing alike)? Ulala did appear in that game, maybe they thought "yeah that'll do". But still, they could've released spinoffs based off Jaguar, Pudding, Pine, with unique gameplay styles or something.
I always thought the reason Sega has so many dead franchises was because they got overshadowed by other companies, bet after watching this I realize that it’s Sega themselves, they are standing on gold they choose not to mine. They give up on them before they can stand on their feet.
But looking back on Nintendo’s Flagships and comparing it to Sega’s Flagships, Sega seems to have the most Flagships over Nintendo, thought that was worth pointing out.
Who else as a Sonic fan didn’t know all of these other franchises existed besides Super Monkey Ball, NIGHTS, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5 & Yakuza 😭lol
What about Rhythm Thief? That’s a Sega IP and it was created by many staff members who worked on the Sonic series. It’s definitely in the lower categories, sadly, but it’s one that deserves more attention.
@@studio_1 I might be confusing it with something else but i think someone important to Rhythm Thief's creation also said they'd still want to make that sequel only a few years ago? Could be wrong
@@MagillanicaLouM Can’t say. The director has celebrated its anniversaries on his Twitter, but I’ve heard nothing about a sequel at all in the last few years.
Legend of Kai: "Unfortunately, It seems that while they love being first to do things, they will most likely never be the ones to have the last laugh, as many of their once innovative and cherished franchises are now nothing more than distant memories, relics lost to time." Sega: "And I took that personally"
I know you are only covering games that had sequels, but maybe giving an entry of their own to Comix Zone, Ristar, Burning Rangers, Skies of Arcadia, Rez, Billy Hatcher, and Madworld could have been great considering that they have appeared in crossover Sega games, rereleases, and polls. However, since they are also unfortunately dead, I guess it was great that you didn't lol
Also Kolibri, Tempo, Alisia Dragoon, Lord of the Sword, F-Zero AX/GX, Project X Zone, Resonance of Fate, Sega Swirl, Dynamite Headdy, Kid Chameleon, Chakan, MJ Moonwalker, and Evolution.
This is why I love but despise Sega at the same time. On one hand, I keep getting impressed at the wide range of games and wacky ideas they have released over the years, and even though many are hidden gems, they had creative elements and fun mechanics. However, I hate that Sega is currently surviving on a couple of successful franchises when they could have invested more budget and care into their other franchises to translate them to more modern audiences (also better advertisement). They just have tons of IPs that could be revitalized in some way as indie games or something else. I just hope they start making better decisions financially, and somehow they start reviving some of these franchises since many could thrive in more open world or online multiplayer type of games that are available to more players
@@VOAN Magical truck adventure was also a thing in the arcades in 1999 and it's definitely an interesting looking game. Plus we can't forget about the many licensed anime games like the bleach series and Demon Slayer. Also there is tembo the badass elephant and pulseman made by the creators of pokemon
Man I would love to see shinobi returning by having the same gameplay like shinobi 3 but with better graphics and music not only that but I also want to see vectorman, golden axe,kid chameleon, altered beast and man there are so many sega games that deserves to comeback, even quartet😁
One note on the Sakura Wars entry: All previous games are being fan translated at this moment to other languajes and there still "On stages show" and merchandise and manga in Japan. The problem is that for the West the series is basically unknow, since its last game is locked on PS4 and its basically the sixth one.
Only first game on Saturn was fan translated, and some spinoffs (Columns 2, GB), SW1 + SW2 PC versions got officialy RUSSIAN localization (but not in English which is bizzare). The only one we got officialy in English is SW5 on PS2 in 2010, from NISA, and rebot on PS4 (localized by Atlus, published by Sega). Fan translation patch for SW2 on Saturn is nearly finished, and for SW3 and SW1 on Dreamcast is in early stage of development. GB2 also will get fan translation. PS2 Remake, SW4, and other versions of games are still untranslated.
@@nr2676 Yeah, I think that they should went for the PS2 remakes or the DC versions. Its just a matter of time until the whole series is translate, BTW SW3 is in early stage? Too difficilt to program or something?
@@videosalpaso5323 No, it is just a lot text to translate (SW3 have the most content in series). They even translating VMU, and this is definitely not easy task. From what i seen they translated around 30% of game. I saw screenschoots with english text from chapter 3 (Glycine Chapter), so i think they translated 30% of game. They should translate PC versions, the easiest version to translate, and the best looking (it's just DC versions + you can change resolution up to 1080p.). But PC versions have one big downside - they are uncompatible with newer versions of Windows (Win Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 10) - because of Starforce DRM.
I'd say that the West did get some awareness of it due to crossover titles, and not just ones Sega's typically involved in too, it even got into a mainline Super Robot Wars title as one of SRW 30's DLC entries... a game that was already notable for being the first mainline (so not OG-timeline) SRW to get an outright western release.
@@TARDISES I discovered the series because of the anime then tons of years later the patch came and I was surprised in the 180° change of tone and now I watched every single media subbed at this point. SEGA needs to have more faith in this series specially with Fire Emblem in full burst right now.
39:52 Fun Fact: The Anime is owned by Sega, one of the couple Anime IP that Sega own. Not-So Fun Fact: The creator of the Anime is the same creator of Boku no Pico.
I'm still sad that NiGHTS into Dreams was completely abandoned after the Wii game, especially with how much narrative potential it has, as it explores the dreams and issues in the life of the children/"visitors"
Sega’s perseverance and persistence in trying out new things even if they’ve been burned before kinda resembles their own mascot, in a way. Sonic might have his downs, but he doesn’t stay down for long, that’s for sure. And apparently, neither does his parent company.
10:03 There is actually a third _Dynamite Deka_ game, _Asian Dynamite,_ exclusive to arcades and exclusive to Asia, released in 2007. But yeah, even then, it's been 16 years, it's still in 'dead' status.
No, Virtual On Oratorio Tangram and Marz were released stateside. 4orce was the only one not localized. What does he mean, the series never got direct sequels???
I wouldn't say Shenmue III was disliked because it was too similar to its predecessors. It has serious flaws in the story, combat and general game mechanics departments that were never in the original. As for Shenmue II, the often forgotten one due to initially not making it to the US... it's actually much closer to a Yakuza game, hence the constant parallels thrown between the two series. It also definitely holds up the best of the three I'd say.
You may missed Virtua Tennis series, but let's just say this game is very much "on life support" or "zombie" because Virtua Tennis Challenge (iOS & Android) existed for whatever reason with average to mediocre reviews, although... It's one of those games that's instantly became my favorites despite it's flaw and sudden difficulty spike, other than that... Great video on SEGA franchise! (I wanna say you may have missed many SEGA series that I can think of, but I'll keep it that way.)
Jet Set Radio is the bomb! The music is incredible and there’s just so much style and flare. It’s a shame its underrated as it is. I know there are teases here and there about a new game being a possibility but I’m not holding my breath. Great job with the video! I truly admire your dedication but I think making this was a mistake. Just look at the bodies piling up in the poor Sega’s dead tier. 😢
17:07 there are literally 3 games besides that Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Force Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Marz
Shoutouts to Ristar and Comix Zone they shall be placed not in the dead tier but the Forgotten Tier since they didn’t even make it in this video Ristar is basically a leftover concept of when Sonic was going to be a Rabbit who could grab things with his ears, that concept was put onto Ristar, a Star-being who could stretch his arms out to grab enemies and headbutt them, and interact with set pieces in a level, in my opinion Ristar felt like Sega’s answer to Kirby, both share a few similarities too like traveling through space to different planets, being star children, and regional differences like both being angry and tough in the USA and happy and cutesy in Japan. Comix Zone is one of the coolest concepts, it’s a side scrolling beat’em up, you take control of Sketch Turner, an artist who got isekai’d into his own Comic Book by the villain in that Comic Book and has to fight his way out through hoards of weird looking creatures drawn by the villain as you progress through, but man is the game hard, if you need to break objects you take a little damage busting through objects, you only get a few lives. It’s one of those classic hard games that’s worth checking out! Whew! That was a mouthful, hope I done a good job explaining these games!😅
@@frozenfire2517 I propose a One Hit Wonder Tier for Ristar and Comix Zone, even though Ristar did get another game on Game Gear it doesn’t mean much since most people know the Genesis Game more.
@@dontnickmyname If anything, they need to INCREASE the budget, get rid of the Visual Novel scenes, and add some exploration. Otherwise, it will just stagnate.
@@guruthosamarthruin4459 Maybe but it's too risky for Sega I think. Developing a new game is very expensive and they need to have some assurance that it will sell good enough. But who knows. Not sure if they ever did one about Valkyrie Chronicles but they did some big ones about Sakura Wars, Sonic, Super Monkey Ball etc
@@dontnickmyname If you not advertise own games, publishing them in worst possible time (VC4 was released with Monster Hunter World in Japan, and with Dragon Quest XI + Octopath Traveler in West, plus announcement Fire Emblem Three Houses in the same week as VC4 killed any hype for VC4 game in West) you never make any progress. They also repeated same mistake earlier with Skies of Arcadia (they released SoA in the same week with Tales of Symphonia on Gamecube and after Final Fantasy IX/X) Resonanse of Fate (game was released in same DAY with Final Fantasy XIII), and later with Sakura Wars on PS4 (releasing a game who is mostly VN with Final Fantasy VII Remake, Persona 5 Royal, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Trials of Mana Remake only on PS4 is asking for underperforming sales). Sega maybe stop releasing own games always with Square Enix big games like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest ? Also if i recall VC4 and Sakura Wars 2019 were games with no worldwide release date, no worldwide release in 2018 or 2020 ??? What a hell, Sega ??? This is not 90's and PSX era. VC need ,only'' those things: better marketing (to not be completely overshadowed by Fire Emblem), newer engine, and better release date.
Virtual On actually got a few sequels, namely the Oratorio Tangram, Force, and Marz. It's a popular enough series that it was featured in two Super Robot Wars games, mainly the Marz iteration.
Puyo Puyo should be moved up, it's the third best selling franchise behind Sonic and Total War. Project DIVA should've been mentioned and it is definitely a mainstay. Madworld/Anarchy Reigns is also missing but sadly that's another one for the dead tier.
I think now would be a good time for Bandai-Namco. Then an update video for all four of them, with the stuff you missed, honorable mentions, and so on.
@@MagillanicaLouM I don't think its as many as it seems well just from first looks. I'd always assumed Sega to be one of the biggest there's over 100 for Sega Bandai at least from the lists I've seen is around 80-90. Definitely more than Capcoms that's for sure but guess we'll find out eventually

Would definitely help if you guys knew any super obscure ones that most people miss though.
Appreciate you commenting on both of the videos haha. Yeah it definitely takes its toll, currently working on the Bandai Namco vid as we speak and its just as rough haha but its all worth it to see those finals lists at least for me
With the recent announcement Sega made at the Game Awards, I think this video will need to be remade in a couple of years... The future looks promising, and hopefully there will be a renaissance for many of these franchises Edit: At least Golden Axe, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi are back
Shenmue is supposed to get 2 more interaction, finishing the story off at Shenmue 5. I honestly felt Yu Suzuki should have been grateful he got a 3rd and finished the series there. I personally would buy all 5 to get the story but lets be honest, Shenmue was fortunate to get a 3rd. Funny enough, he actually planned for it to be a 16 part of game way back when the first one released. I guess when your a company's "golden boy", you feel you can do anything.
I've never even heard of SpikeOut, but I so wanna play that right now! I read that it's gonna be included in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth sooo I'm sold.
I would say Sakura Taisen/Wars deserved at least Mainstay spot That series is huge in japan, Even when they're not making the game out of it, This is the series that it just won't died out no matter what The 2019 game is not really a revival of a dead franchise, It's more of a continuation(Similiar to God of War gap between 3 to 4)
Sakura Wars is like SEGA's Momotaro Dententsu,. Franchise very popular in Japan, but unknown / very niche in West, mostly from same reason like Momotaro - no localization, and publisher just don't care. And as you mentioned this series should be in Mainstay spot, because Sega putted Sakura Wars and Virtua Fighter in financial report in ,,An IP Portfolio That Is a Well-Spring of Value Creation'' : www.segasammy.co.jp/cms/wp-content/uploads/pdf/en/ir/ir_2022_web_all_e-1.pdf (page 13).
Yeah, it got an anime and a stage play run that only ended last year and can always continue, plus the actress for the original heroine also does in character summer shows with other older cast mates. Normally that's not a big deal, but considering this is the franchise that STARTED that part of video game cross media (and the in universe ties), I'd say that's an important aspect. And Sega makes money off em i figure lol
@@MagillanicaLouM If i remeber Sakura Wars is still the only one series, when stage shows (aside of PS4 game) are when original Voice Actresses sing and dance. And how old are Chisa Yokoyama and other VA ? 50 ? And they still doing stage shows.

The state of NiGHTS is so tragic. There's a MASSIVE list of how many times the NiGHTS franchise has been referenced in Sonic media, the Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Forces being the most recent examples. It's been made pretty clear that, if Sonic Team could take a break from Sonic to work on any other franchise, it'd probably be the NiGHTS franchise. Heck, Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima, the creators of Sonic and NiGHTS, even came together to create Balan Wonderworld as a spiritual successor to NiGHTS... which went horribly. The only thing preventing the series from continuing is just... SEGA not wanting Sonic Team to work on anything other than Sonic. Everyone involved seems to still hold a lot of love for the series. (Also Journey of Dreams is underrated. Far from perfect sure, its gameplay is bogged down by the numerous minigames and janky bosses, and cutscenes look pretty ugly, but it's otherwise got REALLY strong art direction and amazing music, and expands upon the story concepts from the first game. Yet it doesn't get much love because the series as a whole has been left to die.)
Well Sonic Team are also behind the Sega made Puyopuyos, you can also side eye that series a bit for the state of our Jester lol. They also, or at least SOME of the staff on the team, apparently worked on Sakura Wars 2019/20 and Valkyria Chronicles 4/VC1 remaster. I know Sakura Wars uses hedgehog engine 2, whether or not that's where their involvement ends idk. And I'm not sure about the details of their VC involvement, I only heard of it from other Sega nerds who's knowledge I respect and they probably saw it in some Japan only Valkyria Chronicles 4 news post or whatever before release. All of those came out between Forces and Frontiers, so a lot of the team were busy while Sonic fans were crying about no content (because a whole ass movie and spin off just don't count lol)

Well well well, taking in consideration that OP is a NORMIE, of course this confrontation would happen... So, regarding Mushi King (not mentioned in the video) King of the beetles, Mushi King is the first arcade game ever on implementing a card base system where once you put the coin, created on the beginning of 00's, the machine gives you a random card that can be used on the game, either a creature or a attack move. Becoming kinda popular for a reason that I'll tell later, even to have an anime adaptation. Unlike it's superior successor, since Beetle catching and battling in an inherent Japanese childhood thing, SEGA had shown a particular interest on keeping on the Mushi series, while not being new arcades or games (only one non related to SEGA based on Mushi launched to the Nintendo Soy I mean Switch) SEGA had done different stuff for the franchise's 20'th aniversary, like streams with vtubers and lots, lots of activity regarding it on SEGA of Japan's twitter. And regarding the magnum opus and the only 10/10 thing that Sega did in it's entire existence 39:51 Dinosaur King was another try, this time to expand on this Card based arcade machines, as SEGA created a trinity of these machines, With Mushi being the first one, DK being the UberGame, and a third one called Love and Berry being the wamen's one. As they did with Mushi, Dinosaur king also had a anime adaptation ONE YEAR LATER, since the machine was officially running on 2006 while the anime started it's broadcast on 2007's Japanese TVs. The DK arcade series has a total of 5 entries, each one having different characteristics 2006 - The first one on the series, known for being the one with the worst art-style and simple designed UI, since it was an experiment to see if this would became successful or not, is the most basic one of them all. (Exported to USA and Uk) Operation dinosaur rescue - Known for it's improvement's to the art - style and specially the UI, adding new dinosaurs, moves, and introducing the Alpha and secret dinosaurs. Apart of including the Acrocanthosaurus story, also includes the 06 one (Exported to USA, UK and Taiwan) D Team vs The Alpha Fortress - Has a totally new story, adds more dinosaurs, moves and game-modes, such as the Alpha exam or vs Dinoman (The last one exported to USA, UK and Taiwan *since youtube videos about SEGA Taiwanese tournaments/events show this version of the machines alongside Anime's second season's merch, season focused on the next Arcade installment's content) vs ZanJark - The first new and fresh instalment, being more close with the anime than previous ones, improving art-style and visuals from some old characters, adds new characters, game-modes, dinosaurs, moves and the first ground breaking mechanic (SEGA did it first, Pleb Freak) the Dinotector dinos (armors). (Japan's exclusive) Awaken/Wake Up, New power! - The last entry of the arcade Machines, includes all the content from Vs ZanJark, adding a new final boss, Gouma, the last bunch of dinos and moves, and the last gimmick, awaken mode. The last support for the arcade machines ended like between 2011 and 2012. Apart of the machines, we have the DS semi-port which unlike the Mushi King ones isn't a faithful one since DK DS is a RPG, while Mushi ones are totally ports, even having a card reader adaptator for gba/first DSs And last, the IOS thing, it's possible that isn't even a game, at first, since it was an IOS exclusive, quickly became lost media and even the entire DK fandom doesn't know exactly what it was, but with the few surviving screenshots, it's possible that it was just a Dinosaur encyclopedia like a Walking With Dinosaurs one also IOS exclusive and also elitist lost media. At least despite being just an obnoxious NPC you had been honest here 42:04 Aaaaand at least a little bit of humanity, neuron and soul activation spawned here 1:00:05 (which is ironic since being popular isn't a good thing, specially today where even the most self-gatekeep franchises like Umineko suffers for having horrid posers) so, sorry if I was to harsh with this comment, am just a gatekeeper elitist that has PTSD because of the hell that is Touhou fandom since 2015.
Just wanted to point out for those sonic fans like me if you were wondering what sonic team was doing doing the Sega Saturn after the whole sonic hiatus that it took with the only new game being sonic 3-D blast most of the team was walking on nights in the dreams so that explains why the game seems to be so good because it was made by probably the best team to have Evergrey Sega sonic team at least in the 90s it was the best
Sonic team was talented but you forgot Sega Technical institute also was responsible for Sonic 2. There was a 3D Sonic being made for the Saturn but Yuji Naka had a fit about the dev team wanting to use the Night's engine to develop it. So yeah, Yuji Naka, Sonic's creator was also the reason there was no Sonic on the Saturn and now Yuji Naka is going to jail for insider trading.

Chuchu Rocket being in Zombie tier despite some in the Life Support tier for games that are rumored to come soon while it had a recent newer title kinda makes no sense honestly. Would make sense if it was on life support honestly.
Ever since the Persona 3 remake got leaked along with Jet Set Radio, I 100% believe we're getting a new game. And hey if we don't, I'm looking forward to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, which is basically its new successor.
Regarding Etrian Odyssey, after the release of the 6th mainline title (titled Nexus in English, and X in Japan, something of an "all-stars" game that brought together locations, layouts, bosses, classes, and characters from previous titles), Atlus put out a teaser stating that the franchise would continue - a legitimate concern given how the cartography-focused gameplay seemed to depend on the dual screen hardware that was getting phased out at the time. We've yet to see what that entails, other than the Origins Collection proving that the series can function on a single screen.
@@Legend-of-Kai Well, you are right about that! I just thought it would be sent directly to the "dead tier" 😅. Imagine Sega bringing this back making it their own TOTK but recruiting animals and monsters 🤯🤯
Sakura Wars (originals from SAT and DC), Valkyria Chronicles, Skies of Arcadia, Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter, Shenmue and Shinobi are my fav. Sega franchises.
Sega has so much potential,if it got it's act together it has so many franchises it could create an amazing console that would sell based on gameplay alone
I'm surprised Dynamite Deka/Cop isn't on here, that's another classic SEGA franchise that got released in the west with the first installment having the Die Hard license on top of it, but still an original IP by SEGA that's great beat em up fun.
It's honestly embarrassing just how many franchises Sega has left for dead compared to the amount of mainstays and flagships they bear. Stuff like Nights, Ecco the Dolphin, Vectorman and Clockwork Knight have incredible potential of becoming mainstays if they just kept pumping them out and did some merchandising with them. Hopefully the franchises they recently revealed remakes/reboots for will get fully resurrected. Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Jet Set seem especially likely to pop off if they can just nail one big hit or release several back to back smaller hits.
I know video isnt out yet, but still thanks for not spreading missinformation about the state of Phantasy Star with your last video While YES PSO2 is by FAR from a good game despite its massive popularity in Japan, at the same time its nowhere NEAR as catasthropical disaster(Well, except when JP EP5 Happened, Hamazaki the director also responsible for NGS current state deserve every pain imaginable) Compared to other MMO's right now, PSO2 current state is FAR from those level of garbage I still wish SEGA give us more Phantasy Star games tho and not just PSO2/PSO2 NGS
PSO2 is in a weird middle area between what I would consider popular, good MMOs (ESO, XIV, others) and ones that are just not good. It's fun to dabble in still.
Great job! It's interesting that many of this arcade games just end up in Yakuza as minigames like: Spike Out, Virtus fighter, Fighting Vipers, Bass Fishing and many more. I hope Sega will keep giving licence for other dev teams like it was with Streets of Rage 4 (Spend more then 120 hours in it) But its very optimistic, Sega also known for making dumbest decisions possible like it was with Yakuza 8 having separate from the game NG+ as DLC. And also selling license forNBA and NHL games
I woner in the coming Years how much This list will change with What SEGA Announced Recently and No I didn't watch the whole video maybe at some other point watching the Square and Capcom First. BUT this is INSANE how many IPs SEGA has let alone with Altus being a part of them now.
12:52 I see somebody did the classic mistake of someone’s name have 2 I’s in the beginning and you read the first I as an L, it’s Takashi Iizuka, not Takashi Lizuka
I grew up playing sonic and jet set radio so it would be natural for me to be a sega fan. It is sad that most of their IP's are in the shelf but later soon revived, I believe it just needs more enjoyable and innovate IP's then they already have. Sonic, yakuza, persona, shin megami tensei, etc. Those are great but would love to see more of what sega can do. I hope they can thrive in the future and be as great as it once was.
Sega Japan is big problem there. Every part of Sega like Sega America (Sonic The Hedgehog), Sega Europe (Total War, Football Manager etc.) and Atlus (Megami Tensei, Persona etc.) doing well. But Sega Japan ? Only Yakuza, and Puyo Puyo + PSO2 NG in Japan. Yes they tried with Valkyria Chronicles or Sakura Wars, but due to lower budgets, no marketing in West, or too long being Japanese only exclusive failed. Sega Japan must start advertise own franchises other than Sonic / Yakuza more, and took the risk and give developers better budgets. The next Ip to ,,underperforming sales'' is going Samba De Amigo: Party Central. I did not saw ANY advertise of this game aside of announcement trailer, and game will be released in August 2023. Let's hope new developer studio in Sapporo will create more games from other Sega IP's.
Yakuza is my favorite gaming franchise ever. I've played every entry of the franchise that had a westren release, except the original ps2 Y1 and Y2. But from then I've played even Dead Souls and FOTNS game.
Petition to revive every single zombie/dead franchise thanks Sega.

Well since persona 3 reload was real and the original leaked clip showed it, a new jet set radio, and sonic frontiers beta footage I guess one of the zombie games is coming back

It's sad just how many amazing Saturn franchises have been completely abandoned
And Dreamcast
One of them was revived (Sakura Wars).
True
Vectorman :(
Yeah, it gets more and more glaring with every Genesis themed collection they release lol.
MainStay
I believe Fist of the North Star should have had a mention too!
@ShiKyoakuma Absolutely in Mainstay, it gets pretty frequent new games/updates and it is one of Sega's top 10 best selling franchises.

So in a way when you look at everything they’ve done whether it be good or bad, everything kinda balances out right?
Well... it's Sega. Most death franchises from other developers keep dead forever, but with Sega, we never know when they will have a stroke and make a sequel 10y from now.

@@LamunesADV Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, and Shinobi are back!!!!!!!!
Valkyria Chronicles has become one of my favorite game franchises. The 4th one is fantastic, and I hope we get a 5th one announced soon.
Unfortunately VC4 underperformed in sales, like any game in series.
@@joaofernandes8164This is some pathetic cope.
Valkyria Chronicles sales in Japan (first week, only physical):
VC3 (PSP) - 102k
VC2 (PSP) - 94k
VC1 (PS3) - 77k
VC4 (PS4) - 67k
Triangle Strategy in first month sold 800k only on Switch, and that was a new IP.
Project Diva isn't dead (yet), so maybe they could get some of the people from that team to work on it if it were to happen
Agreed!
It could work on the Switch with the joycons.
@@noneofyourbusiness1998 yeah another good idea
I always thought the reason Sega has so many dead franchises was because they got overshadowed by other companies, bet after watching this I realize that it’s Sega themselves, they are standing on gold they choose not to mine. They give up on them before they can stand on their feet.
But looking back on Nintendo’s Flagships and comparing it to Sega’s Flagships, Sega seems to have the most Flagships over Nintendo, thought that was worth pointing out.
@@brandonwilliams6119 SEGA has cooler characters imo, SEGA always has that edge to them compare to Nintendo

Legend of Kai: "Unfortunately, It seems that while they love being first to do things, they will most likely never be the ones to have the last laugh, as many of their once innovative and cherished franchises are now nothing more than distant memories, relics lost to time."
Sega: "And I took that personally"
Vector man was so good I found it first time as a bonus game in the sega gem collection for sonic
And Mad World had Anarchy Reigns which uses multiple characters for Mad World. Jack, Baron, Mathilda, RinRin and Big Bull.

A "Current State of..." series update at the end of each year would be great. Maybe just a short video for each company.
Shoutouts to Ristar and Comix Zone they shall be placed not in the dead tier but the Forgotten Tier since they didn’t even make it in this video
Ristar is basically a leftover concept of when Sonic was going to be a Rabbit who could grab things with his ears, that concept was put onto Ristar, a Star-being who could stretch his arms out to grab enemies and headbutt them, and interact with set pieces in a level, in my opinion Ristar felt like Sega’s answer to Kirby, both share a few similarities too like traveling through space to different planets, being star children, and regional differences like both being angry and tough in the USA and happy and cutesy in Japan.
With Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima not getting along anymore, there really is no possibility of a new NiGHTS entry.
@@VOAN isn't yuji naka in jail?
@@VOAN Ohshima still is cool with Sega and Sonic Team, he was just chilling with them in that Sonic Direct for the anniversary a couple weeks ago lol. And Naka wouldn't be required even if he didn't have all the drama surrounding him going on.
@@VOAN Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima don't own the rights to NiGHTS and weren't even involved with NiGHTS Journey of Dreams.
With them not getting along, that only means no Balan Wonderworld 2. Sonic Team can still make a NiGHTS game without Yuji Naka and Naoto.
*Ristar sitting in the corner*
They don't all need sequels, but they need to rerelease more titles. Especially Saturn and Dreamcast games.
If you did Konami, nearly every single franchise would fall under “dead”.
Except: Tokimeki Memorial (only in Japan), Momotaro Dentetsu (only in Japan), E-Baseball (only in Japan) :D
25:05 Other than Alien Front Online and Seaman, Death Crimson 2 allowed the use of a microphone to record your damage shouts. During the game, you can use your own recorded voices that play whenever an enemy attacks you.
After Samba de Amigo got a new game on
Nintendo Switch. I could see Chu Chu Rocket,
NiGHTS, Space Channel 5, and Jet Set Radio
be on that system too! Also Billy Hatcher.
I'm suprised that neptunia isn't on here, I'd definitely consider it a sega flagship. I know that it's technically owned by compile heart and idea factory but it was distributed by sega.
Sonic, Yakuza (Like a Dragon), and Super Monkey Ball seem to be the ones keeping SEGA in business. I'm a fan of these franchises, so no complaints from me 😊
Dang. Must be tough being a Sega fan.
You better believe it. Being a longtime Sega fan means being used to disappointment.
@@illegaleagle9041 Good news there's an upcoming strategy game called Unicorn Overlord, and it's published by Sega.
What about Rhythm Thief? Or (probably the MOST obscure one here) Hero Bank? Those are SEGA IPs.
Dragon force seemed so sick
54:37 has crazy gamertags
Sega is frustrating in that while they are good, they have the potential to be the best.
Well well well, taking in consideration that OP is a NORMIE, of course this confrontation would happen...
So, regarding Mushi King (not mentioned in the video)
King of the beetles, Mushi King is the first arcade game ever on implementing a card base system where once you put the coin, created on the beginning of 00's, the machine gives you a random card that can be used on the game, either a creature or a attack move.
And regarding the magnum opus and the only 10/10 thing that Sega did in it's entire existence 39:51
Dinosaur King was another try, this time to expand on this Card based arcade machines, as SEGA created a trinity of these machines, With Mushi being the first one, DK being the UberGame, and a third one called Love and Berry being the wamen's one.
As they did with Mushi, Dinosaur king also had a anime adaptation ONE YEAR LATER, since the machine was officially running on 2006 while the anime started it's broadcast on 2007's Japanese TVs.
The DK arcade series has a total of 5 entries, each one having different characteristics
2006 - The first one on the series, known for being the one with the worst art-style and simple designed UI, since it was an experiment to see if this would became successful or not, is the most basic one of them all. (Exported to USA and Uk)
Operation dinosaur rescue - Known for it's improvement's to the art - style and specially the UI, adding new dinosaurs, moves, and introducing the Alpha and secret dinosaurs. Apart of including the Acrocanthosaurus story, also includes the 06 one (Exported to USA, UK and Taiwan)
D Team vs The Alpha Fortress - Has a totally new story, adds more dinosaurs, moves and game-modes, such as the Alpha exam or vs Dinoman (The last one exported to USA, UK and Taiwan *since youtube videos about SEGA Taiwanese tournaments/events show this version of the machines alongside Anime's second season's merch, season focused on the next Arcade installment's content)
vs ZanJark - The first new and fresh instalment, being more close with the anime than previous ones, improving art-style and visuals from some old characters, adds new characters, game-modes, dinosaurs, moves and the first ground breaking mechanic (SEGA did it first, Pleb Freak) the Dinotector dinos (armors). (Japan's exclusive)
Awaken/Wake Up, New power! - The last entry of the arcade Machines, includes all the content from Vs ZanJark, adding a new final boss, Gouma, the last bunch of dinos and moves, and the last gimmick, awaken mode.
The last support for the arcade machines ended like between 2011 and 2012.
Apart of the machines, we have the DS semi-port which unlike the Mushi King ones isn't a faithful one since DK DS is a RPG, while Mushi ones are totally ports, even having a card reader adaptator for gba/first DSs
And last, the IOS thing, it's possible that isn't even a game, at first, since it was an IOS exclusive, quickly became lost media and even the entire DK fandom doesn't know exactly what it was, but with the few surviving screenshots, it's possible that it was just a Dinosaur encyclopedia like a Walking With Dinosaurs one also IOS exclusive and also elitist lost media.
At least despite being just an obnoxious NPC you had been honest here 42:04
Aaaaand at least a little bit of humanity, neuron and soul activation spawned here 1:00:05 (which is ironic since being popular isn't a good thing, specially today where even the most self-gatekeep franchises like Umineko suffers for having horrid posers) so, sorry if I was to harsh with this comment, am just a gatekeeper elitist that has PTSD because of the hell that is Touhou fandom since 2015.
TRAUMA CENTER!!!!!!!! I want Trauma Center and Madou Monogatari to make comebacks
12:52 - Iizuka with an I. I know, that one gets a lot of people too.
Otherwise, been enjoying these Franchise videos a lot. Actually got me to follow you too.
Chuchu Rocket being in Zombie tier despite some in the Life Support tier for games that are rumored to come soon while it had a recent newer title kinda makes no sense honestly. Would make sense if it was on life support honestly.
Toy Commando was one of the greatest Dreamcast games ever and I will fight anyone who disagrees
Ever since the Persona 3 remake got leaked along with Jet Set Radio, I 100% believe we're getting a new game. And hey if we don't, I'm looking forward to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, which is basically its new successor.
If you're including spiritual successories what about Sonic the fighters fighting vipers Sonic addition
Love this video series dude, keep em coming!
By the way, shouldn't Crusader of Centy be in here? 🤔
Don't believe it ever got a sequel? But I could be wrong!
@@Legend-of-Kai Well, you are right about that! I just thought it would be sent directly to the "dead tier" 😅.
Imagine Sega bringing this back making it their own TOTK but recruiting animals and monsters 🤯🤯
Endless dungeons looks dope
Sakura Wars (originals from SAT and DC), Valkyria Chronicles, Skies of Arcadia, Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter, Shenmue and Shinobi are my fav. Sega franchises.
Instant thumbs up for putting VC in mainstays
Thanks for the video. It was very interesting and I never knew Sega had so many IPs.
Super Monkey Ball is definitely a mainstay.
Just like SEGA, my man forgot about Billy Hatcher 😞
33:03 I don't know why hearing him struggle to sengoku jidai is so funny to me.
I remember ghost squad as a kid and it one of my favourite rial shooters and I wish it get a modern day port not remake like the house of the dead.
I know video isnt out yet, but still thanks for not spreading missinformation about the state of Phantasy Star with your last video
While YES PSO2 is by FAR from a good game despite its massive popularity in Japan, at the same time its nowhere NEAR as catasthropical disaster(Well, except when JP EP5 Happened, Hamazaki the director also responsible for NGS current state deserve every pain imaginable)
Compared to other MMO's right now, PSO2 current state is FAR from those level of garbage
I still wish SEGA give us more Phantasy Star games tho and not just PSO2/PSO2 NGS
PSO2 is in a weird middle area between what I would consider popular, good MMOs (ESO, XIV, others) and ones that are just not good. It's fun to dabble in still.
I should point out Dinosaur King's arcade game came out BEFORE the anime.
Crazy sega got a lot of death franchises
Can’t wait for the namco video
Also you forgot hatsune miku project diva
im surprised you didnt mention Road Rash, but mention like gunstar heroes and vector man
Nobody mentioned it here but isn't Two Point technically a Sega franchise considering it got two entries? Feels like an odd exclusion
Star Wars (Sega Franchise) had a potential to come back, if Sega is up for making a new Star Wars game.
Justice for Rhythm Thief. Either way, damn…. The dead franchises have killed me
Edit: I JUST REALIZED WHERE ARE THE HATSUNE MIKU GAMES
You forgot Astal and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg.
One game wonders and not really a franchise. Even if I love Billy Hatcher.
