These Classics IV recorded two of the most "haunting" love songs ever recorded, "Stormy" and "Traces ". Their recording of "Spooky" is just plain fun! These songs are holding up against the test of time for true romantics.
Dean Daughtry, who died last January at the age of 76, was a member of Classics IV and later a founding member of Atlanta Rhythm Section. That is why they performed "Spooky", which you reacted to a few days ago. So now that you know the ARS version, you can check out the Classics IV version, which placed even higher on the charts. Also check out the third song which they are known for, "Traces".
Loved this since it came out. The Classics IV evolved into the Atlantic Rhythm Section. Another band from the same era is The Grass Roots. "Live for Today", "Midnight Confessions", and Many others.
@@Wordsmyth8 Guitarists J. R. Cobb and Buddy Buie, and drummer Dean Daughtry were in both bands, and, yes, they really did evolve from one band to the other.
"Traces", "Everyday With You Girl", and their original version of "Spooky" are great songs by them. "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb the original version is another song along this line you would love. Two bands to revisit would be The Rascals and song "A Beautiful Morning" and The Lovin' Spoonful with songs "Daydream" and "Do You Believe In Magic". All are wonderful songs.
Yes and yes the Rascals and the Lovin Spoonful were such fantastic 60s bands. Rascals: "A Beautiful Morning" "People Got To Be Free" "A Girl Like You" "Lonely Too Long" "What Is The Reason." Spoonful: "Do You Believe In Magic" "Daydream" ""Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?" "Never Going Back."
@@rrailguitar2211 They have only reacted to one song by each band and I guess forgot about them and how much they enjoyed both bands and each song by them. They really loved "Groovin'" by the Rascals. It is good to remind them of artists they forget since they react to so much. They do need to hear all of these songs by both artists. They would love "How Can I Be Sure" and their original version of "You Better Run" by The Rascals also. While I'm thinking they need to get back to much, much more of The Fifth Dimension as well. "One Less Bell To Answer", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Up Up And Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep at All" and "Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes they have not done. One song by them and never returned. They need to also be introduced to Spanky and Our Gang at some point. They should start with "Like To Get To Know You" and then "Lazy Day".
real professional musicians make it look so natural and easy. i grew up with 60's and 70's music, i was 10 in 65 so by 75 a bunch of really great stuff was written and produced and it was all radio and vinyl records back then, nothing more.
Dennis Yost. INCREDIBLE. One of my favorite singers and band. By the way, the sax player wrote several of their songs and they started off as purely instrumentals that they developed into these amazing hits.
Thank you for your review of “Stormy” which is one of my favorite songs from the Sixties! Their lead singer, Dennis Yost, had the most distinctive voice, I love him, and may he RIP❣️ Traces, Spooky and Every Day with You Girl were top hits with the Classics IV also.
I remember this song well. They used to play it while we were roller skating at the YMCA. I'm glad you did this one. Bring back some wonderful memories
Right with you Jay. I never want this song to end. Yes Amber, it's super haunting. I'm sitting here looking at the photo of my love who passed almost 8 years ago.
I love the Classics IV. They're actually from Jacksonville, FL. Dennis Yost's voice and the amazing sax solos help to create an incredible mellow, haunting sound. Others songs I recommend from them would be "Traces", "Spooky", "Midnight" and "Everyday with You Girl". As for "Stormy", Santana does a really cool cover of it that would be worth listening to.
I love Dennis' voice! So glad you enjoyed this band...check out Spooky and Traces (Amber I know you'll love that one!). I loved their music back in the day. ❤
They were awesome e. And yes his voice was silky yet sooo cool. Melissa Ward here. Just a boomer girl very lucky to have grown up with the greatest music ever. Imo
I am so happy to see that you are keeping this song alive! I'm a 64 year young Black woman. I have absolutely loved music since I was born in 1960. I love this is why I love the BeeGees and so many other groups so much. I learned how to harmonize in the glee club in elementary school at the age of 8 and I never stopped harmonizing songs throughout my life. It's something that makes music extra beautiful. It's like a cherry on top of something good. I see that you two siblings seem to have my same spirit and I am so happy to have stumbled upon your channel. This song is something that I just forced my son who is a 39 year old music producer to listen to. He inherited my love of music, and we both cannot live without it! Omg! Im still listening to you am texting you and I am hearing you are about to listen to Elton John's " Someone Saved My Life Tonight"! Thats one of my favorite songs of all times! You 2 are remarkable and make me know that I am not alone. God bless you and I am definitely going to support your channel! Keep up doing this please!❤
This is the group that originally did "Spooky" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section you reacted to a few days ago. Two of the members of The Classic IV went on to form ARS.
This song made it to the top 10 in the charts but was on the way down when I bought my first radio in 1968. I loved it and wanted to hear it a lot, but alas, songs on the way down in the charts don't get as much airplay as those on the way up. I could not get enough of it. Three really good pics today. 😊
I remember there were so many new songs on the "survey" that the songs that were played constantly in January were long gong by April. So many great songs coming at you at once.
Linda canção do grupo Clássics IV, destacando se os solos da guitarra e do saxofone dando a música muita emoção e nostalgia. Música que não pode faltar no meu play list.
I discovered this group back in 1967 when my family was living in Germany courtesy of the United States Army. I would listen to them on the Armed Forces Radio Network! What memories!
Actually they're from Jacksonville, Florida. The lead singer is Dennis Yost who died in 2008. Other Classics IV hits include "Spooky", "Traces" and "Every Day With You Girl".
Have they reacted to More Today than Yesterday by the Spiral Staircase? Or James Ray's If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody! I know Amber would like the tuba in that song.
Great classic song and reaction! Now please journey to 1973 for some blues with “Tobacco Road” live by Edgar and Johnny Winter. You’ll never forget this performance once you see it
You won't believe this...I was watching the movie Moby Dick with Gregory Peck and fairly near the beginning the score had this haunting melody that I kept playing and rewinding and playing again. Then it hit me, that note sequence is just like a pop song called Stormy. Of course in the movie, it's not jazzy like this, but the same exact notes. So I looked up Stormy and played it about 20 times. If you take the first several bars of this song and it's played with strings (like in the emovie), it kind of transports you to another place.
The Classics IV started in Florida as the Classics due to the founder's drum set, but then when they started becoming big, they were told there already was a band named the Classics, so they changed their name to Classics IV for their four members.
Brings back those just a kid days listening to my transistor radio tucked under my pillow late at night hoping the parents didn't find out I was still up listening to music.
This is the group that originally did Spooky also. You reacted to the ARS version yesterday. In fact the guitar riff in the chorus is exactly the same as the riff at the beginning of Spooky.
Just saw them this summer at a "Happy Together" tour with several other oldies 60's groups. They had some great hits! They did "Spooky" that's become a standard Halloween time song now.
I was too young to catch the first generation of this music, but was lucky enough to catch the rewind with the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Saw the latter in concert in 1979 at Champagne Jam at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd stadium. Great times.
Just a few days ago you reacted to "Spooky" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section 1979. Well Classics IV went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their version of "Spooky" in 1968. The song was an instrumental in 1967 until the Classics IV put the lyrics to the music, I believe that's how it went down.

So much of the focus on 60's music is the album stuff played on FM radio but AM radio had a lot of great hits and artists as well like Classics IV, Zombies, Walker Brothers, Fifth Dimension, Glen Campbell, The Crystals, The Shirelles, and of course Motown. I've noticed a lot of commercials are using early 60's music or the feel/sound of early 60's music as the soundtrack. I appreciate a lot of this music much more than I did when I was growing up.
Thanks for reacting to another band from my hometown of Jacksonville Florida. Great music from these guys. Another vote for Spooky, which they did originally, and Traces, a truly great song.
Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time favorites from my early years. The Classics IV were actually from Jacksonville, where they got their start, and Atlanta, where they hit nationally. Although with the soulful voice of Dennis Yost and the great sax solo by Mike Sharpe, I can understand why someone might think they were from Philly.
Originally known as The Classics with the lead singer Dennis Yost on drums they added the IV when they found out there was another group using the Classics name. Later changed their name to Dennis Yost and the Classics IV until they broke up. A couple of band members then formed Atlanta Rhythm Section. Glad to see you guys finally reacted to the Classics IV. Traces Of Love and Spooky are two other great songs by them!
Traces is my all-time favourite song.
A few days ago they reacted to Atlanta Rhythm Section doing "Spooky".
Traces of Love is a great choice. Similar blue-eyed soul feel.
Also "Every Day with You Girl" is another great Classics IV song

Also "Every Day With You Girl". Santana also did a great version of this song in 1978.
