For people that only watched the 4Kids dub and never saw Season 0 or read the manga, this is actually an accurate representation of Atem at this point. Homie was very angry vigilante justice kind of thing. Killing people, sending them to never ending mental torment, and all that nonsense. This duel is the one where Yugi and Atem had basically their first big argument and their characters start to develop. Atem learns to be more caring/sympathetic, and Yugi started to learn to stand up for himself and stuff like that. One of the top comments by Zekeram on this video also talk about how fucking insane Kaiba was as well.
In Japanese canon, Atem was willing to do it the whole time, because he never likes losing. Yugi on the other hand was crying afterwards not solely because he lost a children's card game, but because his other "me" was gonna do it.
I believe that was in the dub as well? Started a whole mini-arc where Yugi was too afraid to hand control over to Atem again which caused him and Atem to actually start talking with each other like separate people, instead of just merging entirely like they've been doing up to this point.
It wasn't for such a petty reason, he was willing to do it because otherwise he would lose Duelist Kingdom, and thus both his grandpa's soul and Joey's prize money. But the other Yugi stepped in and stopped him, because "it's the right thing to do", he showed kindness to his enemy, something that Atem would learn from him.
@@seasnaill2589 That was also something the dub really changed. In the original, Yugi is Yugi and Atem is Atem (no Yugi using Atem's body but not using his mind, or whatever that was). The problem was that Atem is so frightened of losing that he felt so pressured by Pegasus that he only had eye for Pegasus, and this pressure caused him to make mistakes in his duel against Mai. Then later, Mai talks about a duelist's courage, that you can't have that unless you're prepared to lose and get hurt, which is tested when a duelist is about to lose. This then makes Atem flash back to the situation with Kaiba, where he realizes that the thought of losing frightened him to the point he was willing to take Kaiba's life, while Yugi on the other hand chose to put himself between Kaiba and Atem to take the loss and suffering rather than take Kaiba's life. Atem then fully realizes he has weaknesses while Yugi has strengths that compensate his weaknesses, something he subconsciously already knew but didn't want to admit to himself before. It's then at that point he takes on Yugi's strength of a duelist's courage, not only alleviating the pressure he felt from Pegasus but also feeling courageous enough to take a very risky bluff vs Mai that eventually leads to his win.
Kaiba: “If you attack me, a person you have ample reason to hate, Yugi, and win this duel, with which I am obstructing you from getting your grandfather’s soul back, you’ll kill me!” Yami: “Curses! I guess I have no choice but to-nah, just kidding. Sic ‘em, Celtic!”

He did, but Kaiba didn't trust Yugi to save Mokuba for him. If Kaiba lost that duel, then he wouldn't be allowed to challenge Pegasus, which was the deal they made to free Mokuba. So, to Kaiba at that point, losing the duel would be equivalent to dying anyways, since his only reason to live then was Mokuba. Love how that's the pharaoh talking when he says "I didn't like that very much Kaiba." Meaning the pharaoh cares about Yugi so much he's willing to kill the man who hurt Yugi
In the original Japnese version and Manga, the attack wasn't what was going to make Kaiba fall off the tower. He fully intended to jump off himself if he lost.
To be absolutely fair to Kaiba, the only reason he joined the games in the first place was to get his little brother's soul back. He felt there was no point of living if he didn't make it to the finals (at least, that's how I interpreted it) because he would never see Mokuba again. It's kinda heartwarming in a twisted way.
It wasn't even for that reason. He needed to save his Grandpa that, as said in the video, got his fucking soul stolen. In his mind, if he doesn't beat Kaiba here, he can't get into the castle, can't duel Pegasus, can't save Grandpa.
This gets better. In the manga before the anime starts, he actually both did not care about his brother being trapped in what is basically a cage full of Scarecrow's fear toxin, all cause he lost to Yugi, but also invited Yugi and co. to a game, gave them non working guns so they couldn't actually beat anyone and gave their opponents ACTUAL GUNS with LIVE AMMUNITION, with the intent of offing Yugi AND all his friends, in cold blood.
Kaiba went out easy I say, yes he did received a penalty that got him fainted for a year, but let's be real, he should have killed Kaiba, and the sole reason I think he didn't was because Mokuba told him about his past.
I mean, let's not forget the original yugioh manga was meant to be a "girl from nowhere" esque horror manga. Yugi just got really addicted to 1 card game and calmed his bloodlust a bit.
I'd love to see the alternate universe version of Yu-Gi-Oh that stayed as a horror manga and what anime would have spawned from that. Probably not nearly as much content but it would be fire based on the early manga and season 0 of the anime.

I like how a lot of people were surprised to see in the original that Yami almost didn't hesitate at all to kill Kaiba in that scene If we consider the first few manga volumes, that wouldn't even be in the top 5 worst things he's done
It's interesting how the 4Kids dub changes it to the blast from the attack will knock Kaiba off of the ledge, which makes Yami consider murdering Kaiba. However, the original having Kaiba threaten to jump makes Yami not as bad. But apparently having the antagonist threaten suicide is worse than having the antagonist say that "if you attack you'll kill me," which is still basically threatening suicide but also blaming the other person for it. At least in the original, Yami attacking comes off less cold blooded because it could simply be calling Kaiba's bluff and if Kaiba isn't bluffing Yami still wouldn't be responsible although Yugi probably would have held Yami responsible if Kaiba decided to jump after losing.
@@Peelster1 What is funnier is that in the dub, when Kaiba said that him being blown off the edge could 'hurt him' and Yami wouldn't want that, Yami's responses was "Don't tempt me!".
@@Peelster1 well even if the wind wouldn't knock him off, knowing how much Kaiba needs to win and how much he loses if he doesn't, there's no way in hell he's bluffing. Jump" and punish him if he doesn't
He did hesitated a bit, but ultimately thought about losing the duel would mean his grandpa would be trapped forever, thus he was willing to finish off Kaiba. Before Duelist Kingdom, alright, Yami Yugi did scared the crap out of many enemies with the penalties, but he only killed one, a serial killer that got him at gun-point and then would kill his friends, totally justified.

@@seasnaill2589 yeah
It wasn't for such a petty reason, he was willing to do it because otherwise he would lose Duelist Kingdom, and thus both his grandpa's soul and Joey's prize money.

@@Dexuz Cuts to Waking the Dragons arc:
"I ACTIVATE THE SEAL OF ORICHALCOS!"

In the original Japnese version and Manga, the attack wasn't what was going to make Kaiba fall off the tower. He fully intended to jump off himself if he lost.
To be absolutely fair to Kaiba, the only reason he joined the games in the first place was to get his little brother's soul back. The fact that Yami Yugi was canonically going to go for it to win a children's card game makes this funnier.
It wasn't even for that reason. He needed to save his Grandpa that, as said in the video, got his fucking soul stolen. In his mind, if he doesn't beat Kaiba here, he can't get into the castle, can't duel Pegasus, can't save Grandpa.
3:19 And so Kaiba senting to the shadow realm and everybody died...the end??? new yugioh anime series came out aired on channel.

Yugi: Kaiba, we interacted twice so far and one of those interactions was you kidnapping my grandfather, sending him to the hospital, taking his most precious card and rip it in front of me. You really think I care whether you live or die?
Kaiba: Yeah, but you have no reason to kill me, do you?
Yugi: My grandfather's literal soul is on the line here.
Kaiba:...I need to save my brother?
Yugi: Oh you mean the brother who stole my Star Chips and nearly got me disqualified because he was petty I beat you fair and square?
Kaiba:...Uh, I have Dark Magician Girl in my pocket?
Yugi: You live for now.
Technically they met 3 times, but yeah.
Yugi: Oh, right! You're dear little brother, Mokuba. The same little brother who sent a literal gang of kids armed with live ammo to gun me and my friends down.
The same little brother who nearly killed Jounouchi and me with poisoned food out of revenge? Am I right?
@@jefferyquick3280 I swear season 0 was crazy, they made mokuba so sweet and tame in duel monters but the kaiba brothers were literally mafia bosses.
My God, the acting in this video is A+.
You really NAILED Yugi's monologue.
'He stole my grandfathers fucking essence of being' had me rolling. I watched this shit like 10x.
2:23
The delivery of the " he stole my grandpa's FUCKING essence of being Kaiba" was brilliant!
I love this creator
Same
69 likes maybe you like him to much
Same, especially the YGO episodes.
@Don't Read My Profile Picture no prob
Kaiba: Looks like I'm the king of games, Yugi.
Hugh Neutron: Well, I wouldn't say that, Kaiba.
Kaiba: Now, who are you supposed to be?
Hugh Neutron:You're going to find out after after I send you to the shadow realm kaibo.
After after
I like how a lot of people were surprised to see in the original that Yami almost didn't hesitate at all to kill Kaiba in that scene
If we consider the first few manga volumes, that wouldn't even be in the top 5 worst things he's done
Now, whether he would have the strength to follow his threat is another story, but everyone could tell he didn't bluff in the slightest, so I'd say Yami is just as responsible in both cases
And again, in his manga debuts he's such a psycho he wouldn't hesitate for one second to beat Kaiba and then say"what are you waiting for? Jump" and punish him if he doesn't
He did hesitated a bit, but ultimately thought about losing the duel would mean his grandpa would be trapped forever, thus he was willing to finish off Kaiba.
Before Duelist Kingdom, alright, Yami Yugi did scared the crap out of many enemies with the penalties, but he only killed one, a serial killer that got him at gun-point and then would kill his friends, totally justified.
@@Dexuz how many people did he kill doesn't change how many people he could have killed in a heartbeat. The fact that he was ready to kill Mokuba by poison speaks volumes about how Yami doesn't have the slightest remorse about going dirty
Kaiba is known to be very smart, yet he didn't think to move to a safer location when Yugi was serious about killing him.
He was about to before he was cut off
1:08 Would have been much better if Yugi responded with, "Of course, it's still season one."
Got to love the whole part of Yami making it clear he has no issues... And Yugi's issue was him not using summoned skull!
Kaiba: lying broken, bleeding and unconscious on the rocks below
Yugi: "Oh shit, he's still got 1 lifepoint... It's your mov- he can't hear me."
“I think I have one more card up my sleeve Yugi.” “No Kiba! That’s called cheating, your supposed to pull cards from the deck. Silly Kiba.”
"so Kaiba, what you're telling me is that you, the person who is 100% ready to ruin my life and disgrace my corpse and responsible for 90% of all my problems, are willingly putting yourself in a position where I can easily murder you and get away with it? I didn't think you even knew what generosity was! "
I love how it slowly went from " yugis grandfather" to " my grandfather" showing yugi was in on it too🤣
I like that once The Phaoroah decides he should kill him, Yugi appears and says you shouldn't do that, it wouldn't actually kill him do this instead. The fact he's a kid makes this much better, since he understand he's just getting what he deserved
The only issue is that Kaiba doesn't know Yami Yugi exists so he'd be weirded out by Yami saying "Yugi" in the third person
In the manga Everyone knew the "OTHER YUGI" existed
They Just dint know What he was
Majority Just tough yugi had multiple personality or smth
In the dub kaiba is like this magic stuff ain’t real in the sub he just didn’t care
I know I say this a lot
and here I go again
I just LOVE how in the solid jj multiverse
All the heroes are literally insane; yet, morally responsible
Yugi: Are you really going to attack with Celtic Guardian...
...
Who barely has enough attack to finish him?? Put out Summoned Skull and send his ass to hell!
Atem: Good call, Yugi!!
I burst out laughing in that line XD
Its heartwarming that he went from Yugi's grandpa to my grandfathers soul.
Really shows character development
I want to remind everyone that in the orginal scene, Kaiba was just gonna jump himself. No holographic wind or anything, he was gonna do it himself.
I mean he could've just
Walked forward to avoid this problem
Speaking around it hardly changes the implications
@@1stCallipostle your missing the point that kaiba was gonna commit suicide over losing a card game.
@@OmniGundam777 Wasnt it to save his brother? The card game with just the requirement
@@jacobellis2313 still a dick move
Belive in the hearts of cards Kaiba!
I love how you manage to make such cool videos with only two voices
Solid jj is really the absolute deadass proof that Fancy editing will get you nowhere without quality content. Because this is absolute quality in a slideshow. Love your work, man. As a fulltime editor I salute this little masterclass :D
"Gee I hope Yugi is one of those anime good guys that values life over all things."
-Yami, from an era where you cut the throats of your apprentices to do cool things in a summoning game-
I knew Yugi was just going to question his choice of attacking specifically with Celtic Guardian, and not attacking altogether.
This entire skit just made me miss Little Kuriboh's abridged series. I don't think he's dead or anything, I hope, but I haven't gotten anything of his recommended in a looong time.
Think I'll head to his channel and check if there's anything new. Thanks for the nostalgia, JJ.
He lives still. But clearly he has more important things to take care of in life. At least his most recent abridged episodes are structured and good.
@@valutaatoaofunknownelement197 Yeah, I just checked. Last upload was 4 months ago on his main channel, but hey, I'm all for UA-camrs taking the time to produce worthwhile, satisfying content rather than trying to pump out stuff every day regardless of quality.
I'm not certain if I remember correctly, but if I do recall correctly he also had depression or something similar. In any case, him still being able to entertain and provide after so many years is admirable.
I'll gladly wait for the next episode. JonTron got me used to long breaks inbetween uploads. 👍
@@howdypartner8326 Of course he's still voicing Frieza for Teamfourstar.
@@dalekrenegade2596 And it is still absolutely hilarious.
I like how Yugi's vibe went full discount detective Conan, nice change of pace
This video is literally the "How It Should Have Ended" version of this episode lol.
Yugi basically saying "What are you doing!? Hit him harder!"
This was quite accurate.
In the manga, the Pharaoh was a straight psychopath that didn't give an ish about killing anyone who messed with Yugi.
For someone like Kaiba who's supposedly the smartest mind in that world... that's one hell of a miscalculation.
well his brothers "fucking essence of being" was stolen and he was kinda out of options
0:32 Yugi was letting him know how stupid this idea was
0:42
1:46
I love how the pharaoh considered his options, questioned why he wouldn't go through with his actions, and still went for the attack. Classic.
WDYM "still" - there was no reason not to.
The way Yugi switches from talking about himself between the 3rd and first person, as if just feeling the emotions of both regular and Pharoah Yugi, I love that. Not to mention just how detailed he was describing getting away with murder, we all love having those moments.
Man your videos have brought me joy every week for more than a year.
As well this video is one of my favourite ones so I rewatch it quite often.
Deeply appreciated.
