I think well if you have a bag of rice that's been around for over 2 years probably 3 and you just moved into a new place a year ago and you took the rice with you and you see white specks in it maybe you should throw it out I don't know I'm asking a question?
I've recently been cleaning my mothers home. She is 87. I have been finding and tossing everything from medication and canned and boxed and frozen foods that expired as far back as 2005.
About a month ago, I found a can of McCormick parsley leaves I know for a fact that I purchased in 1976 (price & store tag for one). I have moved that can at least 12 times, through 5 states. It's never been opened.
Grey Bar0n, "I've recently been cleaning my mothers home. She is 87. I have been finding and tossing everything from medication and canned" In 1987 I ate canned military rations from WWII. No rust or dents on the can so my friend and I gad at it. Years later I had to eat military MRE's and wished I had the cans from WWII.
See that slimy/sticky remark confuses me because I constantly buy steaks, leave them in the fridge for a 2-3 days and then they're sticky and slimy but still very red, maybe tiny patches of brown here and there. I usually just wash it off and the stickyness and very slight smell goes away.
If meat or seafood smells.. it’s bad. After getting home from the grocery store, I opened the meat...it kinda smells. So I still froze it.. stilled smelled after defrosting. yeh I still cooked it. It kinda smelled weird when cooking. I’m like maybe after frying it will be good. It wasn’t! One bite and into the garbage in went. Which I should of done when after I smelled it. Lessons learned. It only took 3 times to learn that. 🤓
I remember hearing somewhere years ago that once you crack an egg if the white bit "chalaza" is missing or very small that egg is bad since the egg doesn't swim freely it's attached to the shell by the chalaza. the more pronounced it is the fresher your eggs are
I have successfully made deviled eggs that were two months old. I know because the supplier wrote the date of harvest on the eggs. TWO solid months later the deviled eggs were fine. The only problem being the enlarged air pocket on the large end of the ellipse. This only made the removing of the yolk more difficult but had no bearing on the taste, texture or edibility of the deviled egg.
I think it depends on what part you're looking at when you mean "food standards." When it comes to prepping and serving food to the public, local governments are responsible for what regulations there are in the USA. Some places require gloves for all food prep, while some don't. Some require certifications to serve and some don't. It's a highly mixed bag.
in the US, we have the federal run USDA that determines what can, and cannot be deemed edible. In europe it is legal to sell cheese stuffed with maggots, duck eggs that are partially developed into young birds, and serve a number of raw foods that are known to cause parasitic outbreaks.
The USDA has limited power in enforcement and a limited scope in food safety. It's still up to local governments to determine what they will enforce and what they'll ignore.
Remember that nowadays kids are growing up with no Dad and a overworked not at home Mom. So nobody to teach the basics to the youngins anymore. Ask a 20 year old boy if he can change his oil. Or a tire...
Milk doesn't really "spoil" unless you leave it out, let it get to room temp, then put it back in the fridge. Even if it tastes sour or its clumpy its perfectly safe to drink although it will taste pretty bad.
Ok have never seen this before, i just finished cooking a sirloin roast baked. Everything seemed fine I seasoned and seared it first, then baked at 275°f. For a hour and 20 minutes, let sit in oven with it off for another 30 minutes. Heres is the scary part.... Went to take it out of the pan a small piece just fell off like nothing. I ate it (not thinking of anything wrong) then spit it out...tasted foul, thought it might of been fat. Then went to slice it....where i stabbed it to hold while i sliced it just started deteriorating was like wtf!!! Could literally dig and shred it with a fork. Smelt horrible. Just bought it three days ago from well known and rated store Publix. Had it in freezer let it thaw same day i cooked it.
You probably had 'parents'. More than half of the new generation never had a Dad and a stressed out busy Mom that had no time for classes for the kids. 'Parents' are going extinct.
Regards butter - we could through about a pound a week. So it never gets a chance to go rancid. Milk on the other hand. And Peanut Butter is mostly used to bait the mouse traps.
A dented can might be bad. But it can depend on where the dent is. If it's along the side it shouldn't be a problem. But if the dent is along a seam like the lid part and the side then I wouldn't trust it.
I had 1 1/2 year old eggs. They smelled perfect with no smell to them. once cracked and it hit the pan the egg kept its shape from the egg shell then slowly went down a little and cooked. dad and i thought they where still good....till we looked at the carton lol. It was like jello hitting a pan and cooking.
What's another good way to tell if your food spoiled?
Mashed bulging cans or meat packaging.
Mashed, can you please stop doing those annoying interlude video clips before introducing a new item in the list?

If you get the shits a half hour after you eat it.

Grey Bar0n if you threw out canned foods you threw out money. It's still good unless the cans are bulged
Sooooo...don't eat anything that looks, smells, or tastes funny. Thanks.

Great advice for idiots. Who would have known that if it stinks it's gone bad?
If meat or seafood smells.. it’s bad. After getting home from the grocery store, I opened the meat...it kinda smells. So I still froze it.. stilled smelled after defrosting. yeh I still cooked it. should only take an instant, but okay.
Did that once and took it back to the store for a refund. Funny thing is the butcher couldn’t tell the difference.
Meat that smells like an autopsy is bad. I take it back to the store.
sometimes AT the grocery store fish already smells awful especially at the Asian markets next to my house. I guess they sell it to slowly?
+Ann B - WOW, you really have it in for her...take a chill pill and make sure it's not expired.

A lot of these are common sense but I've also heard American food standards are low than Europe's. I don't know how true this is though.

Who else cried when they saw Carl eating pudding 😭
It's not rocket science, if you get the shits after you eat it, it was probably spoiled.

1:42 What clip is that from? I think I've seen it before.
I ate a steak with some maggots in it...i thought it was part of the food
Was that a studio c clip?

Is there a list of where each clip comes from?
Didn't learn a damn thing.
All this is common sense in the type of house I grew up in.

when it reeks, when it has shit growing on it, when it has some green/grey shit in it, if there is an eyeball in it looking at you, it's bad.
A dented can might be bad. But it can depend on where the dent is. If it's along the side it shouldn't be a problem. But if the dent is along a seam like the lid part and the side then I wouldn't trust it.
This was funny 😄

Had some packaged smoked salmon that was in my fridge and almost 20 years old. No problem.
Umm... Throw away soft cheeses when there is mold on them? Most of them come that way. Unless it's coated in wax, the outer skin is usually mold.
Whats the bacteria in rice?
i've had butter in the fridge for a year before. seemed ok.
literally random clips are all of the video yet no credits
stale peanut butter wont even attract mice.
Oh wow so if it smells bad, it's gone bad? Fucking genius
But milk can't be spoiled, I can go sour but it's safe to eat or drink. Cheese is "Rotten" milk.
Jesus Christ, if you cant tell if something is spoiled or not you never shoulda left your parents house.
I had 1 1/2 year old eggs.
