Hey bro, ... That's about as clear and concise of a starting video as I've ever seen. When I first started flying gas planes years ago, a video such as this would have been greatly appreciated. I find all your tips and advice to be perfectly on point. Great job!
I like to flip across and down and leave a few second gap between flips. if you get into the habit of doing quick flips, you may end up putting your fingers into a running prop! I also use a glove for anything above 30cc!!!
Muchisimas Gracias. I did several searches and I found your tutorial, and played it twice. Seven years later, and it is still as applicable today as in it was in 2013. Tomorrow, I will be starting my very first gas engine for break-in runs on a test stand. It's a 16cc 2-stroke. Funny thing is that the instruction sheets that came with the engine don't really cover how to properly start an engine. I did ask someone to assist me. Can't be alone at the field if an accident happens. Right. Thank you for such a great job in explaining the proper steps. I will be using a thick glove until I am confident. I had installed my propeller in the usual glow engine position. It is now in that 2 o'clock position you mentioned.
Great video bud. Really good details and super helpful. I’ve been flying electric for a couple years now and wanted to get into gas. So I bought a Phoenix Stuka and Hangar 9 Hellcat. Both are built but the Hellcat has a 17cc NGH where as the Stuka is waiting on a DLE 20cc. Waiting to get good weather for maidens! Thanks a bunch man!
I got my first plane. And I can’t wait to turn it on 😅 But I have never do this before, so I want to be prepared for everything. BTW, it is almost the same size as this one
Just getting ready to start my first gas engine and this video helped out a lot! I fly nitro primarily and just made the first leap to gas. Wish me luck! I’ll put the gloves on or use my chicken stick :) ha
I am the real VoroRC (Andrew T Grant). There is some very good points in this video that I appreciate a lot. Unfortunately, there are some not so good points. There is a lot to a fuel system and starting your airplane in which I do nor like: which need to be addressed.

Well I have a question about a ZDZ 120 ! Have you ever seen one with the ignition sensor in the backplate instead of right on the front behind the prop shaft? It's a wire from the backplate to the ignition module the plug wire comes out of!
@@ToolsAndI , Hello again! I'm trying to open the season on this month, but I will fly for the first time on my gas 50cc airplane on Russian festival named "Sky" in the small airport and I'm worrying about that! I never flew on this gas airplane, but I do fly on small sport electro planes. My friend 2 years ago have flown on my gas plane and it' was ok. I watched it, but I was affraid to fly it by myself. But anyway sometime I need to start flying anyway and now is a big chance for me. Can you give me recomendations how to relax and to not worry and how to fly safety and without crash, because there will be a lot of people. Thanks!
Sergey, there is not much you can do to relax, i even get nervous when I start flying at the beginning of every season. However I recommend that you fly the airplane a day or two before the event so that you can get familiar with it; this will also help feel less stressed the day of the event. I do suggest to get some descent altitude right away when you fly the plane for the first time so that you can play around with the plane and make adjustments (trimming) having plenty of room to react towards any anomalies you may find on the plane's flight characteristics. Take time and go over the entire plane before you get it in the air. I would check all servo electrical connections as well as mechanical connections ensuring there is no binding when full resolution is applied. Also go over all fuel connections including the inside of the tank. I hope everything goes well and don't forget to have fun! I will be looking forward to hear how it turns out.
It is pitty, but I will not have oppotunity to fly on it before, but I will continue flying in my Real Flight 6.5 simulator.I'm preparing already.I checked everything and I'm sure that all is ok and will double check ofcaurse in future before flying it.The big problem for me now to get on the field and fly - that I don't have a car yet. So it' quite difficult to take it out somewhere, because it'' s 7, 5 kg and 2.2.meters wings length. My plane is Su-26 (Honda) 50 cc
Choke on full throttle when it pops turn the choke off 1/4 throttle it will fire first try. Drill the prop at the 11 o clock postion on compression stroke so you flip down and away from the plane.
Thank you. I will soon be posting a video on how to get the best performance out of a gas engine including how to target certain issues that sometime arise when using these engines.
sebastien Dupuis Thank you. The plane on this video has had some engine issues and I am just braking in a new DLE 61 that was installed in it. As soon as I get it running good I will make a flight video.
I will get with a friend of mine who is really good with electronics and try to put one together. It may be later this year since the weather is crazy out here right now.
great........ nice job. As you said, ON the choke before starting and flip the prop . I want know what will happened if the engine will start with choke is ON. the choke will OFF automatically or we have OFF it manually
The engine usually starts for a couple of seconds and dies right after when the choke is on, after that just take the choke off and start again. The choke doesn't go off automatically.
Dwight Hulvey I am currently using Stihl HP Ultra Fully Synthetic oil; I would also recommend Red Line. For gas I just use the 93 octane at the pump; I honestly don't go through the hassle of finding gas without ethanol. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Is this Deer Grove forest preserve in Palatine, IL? looks very familiar I've flown there a couple times. If I remember right they have a paved Runway.
Good video ! As I was watching, I thought things in the background look familiar. You are in Palatine at Deer Grove Forest Preserve. I go there some times, You don't know me, but when you mentioned Stitch. I have met Stitch a couple of times. I was at your field last year when Stitches engine seized in mid air . His plane came down hard. I felt bad for him. I hope you guys post more videos as I enjoy watching them . Thanks David
Thank you David! I believe the plane you saw come down was the Sukhoi, it really didn't suffer much on that occasion but it later was crashed at Shoe Factory. The engine is now in a beautiful Sbach that will be maiden soon. I'll surely post more videos after this weather gets better.
Liked your video. I am famiilar with glow engines and I am recently venturing into gas engines (DLE 35ra). You address some of the differences in your video as far as starting. Thanks.
There is one difference among engines like a DLE 30 and a DLE 55 in terms of starting. The DLE 55 is equipped with a vacuum tubing that comes out from the reed valve spacer which assists the pump inside the carburetor. The DLE 30 and 20 can be tricky to start if they sit around for months since they don't have that vacuum tubing feature. What happens is the fuel inside the carburetor evaporates leaving behind only the oil. In turn the oil kind of glues down the pump membrane to the carburetor and upper plate. When this happens your engine won't draw any fuel from the tank when flipped by hand. In that case you can use a starter to start the engine and brake loose the membrane or just pour some drops of gas directly into the carburetor. Keep all of this in mind if you ever leave a plane sitting down for a few months without use. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for the video. Great one! Are you planning to make one on Killing the engine? There are several setups I found online but I would love to have your POV.
+Mariano Agustín Bosaz There are many videos I would like to do. However I recently relocated for a new job and I've been so busy that I didn't even fly once this year. I will be looking to start making videos sometime next year. Thank you for visiting my channel and for the request.
If the engine is mounted on a plane there usually is a cut off switch (kill switch) assigned to one channel. If you have the engine mounted on a stand you can have an on\off switch between the battery and the ignition. Otherwise just disconnect the battery from the ignition. These is all for gas powered engines and not for glow engines.
Thank you for your comment. If you don't mind can I ask you to consider my problem below? Your ans was really helpful but I am facing new problem when I went to start my RCGF 21 Twin engine last day. The engine won't start anyway not a single pop. The main problem is the carb wasn't drawing fuel. I followed all the instructions I found online and read user manual. My carb model was Walbro WT-962. What I did was, 1. 3 line fuel tank setup. Used zip ties in line connections. There was no leak between the carb inlet and clunk inside the tank. 2. Closed the choke plate and flipped the engine for a pop. But the carb wasn't drawing any fuel from the fuel line. I removed the sparkplug checked inside the cylinder. But no fuel there. :/ I am a newbie ,so sorry if I miss anything to describe my problem in a proper way. The engine is totally new.
VERY NICE DISCRIPTION OF THE PROCEDURE.WHAT IS THE SAFEST PLACE TO INSTALL THE CDI WHEN IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO INSTALL IT ON THE FIRE WALL?I RUN A DLA 32.THANKS IN ADVANCE...
roudyaero The walls around the firewall are the most common place for the ignition either outside or inside the frame. However you can find a place inside right behind the engine and firewall to place the ignition. I have a video of a 100cc Sbach a friend of mine put together where you can also get a different idea.
buen video, felicidades. En vez de estar subiendo y bajando el trimer para arrancar y después bajarlo, es una wena idea usar la función que traen las radios para tener 2 ralentís. En Futaba se llama idle down. Saludos
I didn't watch the entire video but just curious as to why you do not use a starter tool? It just seems to be alot easier to start a plane using a starter
Try to find as many videos of gas powered planes as you can. Let me know how many people you see using a starter, maybe 0.01%. Gasoline airplane engines are usually powered up by hand.
Very well done video. One question: Most electric powered RC Planes under a certain size can be classified as Park Flyers and be flown in many areas. What about the gas RC planes of similar sizes? Do they have to be flown in a sanctioned flying area?
+TheRudydog1 Here is the definition I found: Parkflyer models will weigh 2 pounds or less and be incapable of reaching speeds greater than 60 mph. They must be electric or rubber powered, or of any similar quiet means of propulsion. Models should be remotely controlled or flown with a control line, remain within the pilot's line of sight at all times, and always be flown safely by the operator.
If you flood the engine, cut the ignition, move choke to off, put the carb on full throtle and flip it a few times, you'll clear the cilinders. There is no need to choke with an open throttle, close to idle works just as well and is a lot safer. And dudes, use the frickin' gloves...
The plane on this video is an Aeroworks Edge 540 QB Arf which retails for 750.00 new. Therefore if you buy it new it all starts with the 750.00 and then it all depends on how much are you willing to spend in the engine and electronics. I would say that if you go with budget electronics, batteries and engine the final cost may be around the 1300.00 horizon. However if you go with top notch equipment then the cost will be somewhere between 2500 to 3000. Now, you can easily find a used ready to go plane for around 1000 to 1500. Keep your eyes on RC Universe for a used one and I bet you'll find and great deal. Happy flying!
Thanks for a great video. I started a DLE 61 for the first time yesterday. I set both needles at 1.5 turns out. I started it 9 times and ran about 2 hrs. Sometimes it would start in 10 flips and sometimes in 50-60 flips. In fact the last start took 50 flips and my arm is sore. I thought as I ran it in, it would be easier to start, but that was not the case. I had a 1900 idle and 7300 max with a 23x8 xoar. Sir my question is how do I make this engine easier to start and more consistent like in your video where you said that it would pop in 10-13 flips and it popped in 11. Would making the high or low speed needles richer help.
+Rohit Gupta Definitely, both needles at 1.5 doesn't sound correct. Check the link I have on my video on how to tune a gas engine. Adjustments may change considering temperature and altitude. Good luck.
Hi, Great Video, what engine do you favor and are the gas on glow work as good as the ignition? I fly 1/4 scale electric but need a gas because of the flight time. Thank you : sincerely Terry .PS. I've had the hand and the prop thing ....GLOVES are GOOD.
terry wayne Hamilton I favor gasoline engines and specifically brands like DA, ZDZ, OS and 3W. I don't understand your second question about glow and ignition, sorry. If you are asking about glow engines I have to say that I don't any and can't say much about them. The only thing is that glow fuel is a lot more expensive than gasoline mixture fuel and it leaves and undesirable film of oil on your planes.
Depending on the tank's size about 20 to 30 minutes. However most people fly a max of 10 minutes and bring them down. 10 minutes is a safe zone in terms of flight time and it is plenty also.
When you say gas, do you mean actual gasoline and not glow fuel? Glow and gas (gasoline) powered are fairly similar in terms of flying characteristics but the engines are different in tuning and performance. The main advantages of gas powered engines is the low cost of fuel (3 to 5 dollars a gallon compared to 20+ with glow) and no messy oil to clean up after flying.
If you want to build a kit, AMR makes a 50cc trainer as well as SIG's new giant Rascal, and Hangar 9 makes a 30cc high wing trainer / sport plane ARF called the Valiant. Anything High Wing with lots of wing area preferably with a flat bottom airfoil and dihedral.
DEAR MOONGRASS. I OWN A DLE 32 GAS ENGINE. WHEN I START THE ENGINE AND I GIVE FULL THROTLE ON THE GROUND RUNS GOOD. BUT ONCE I BECOME AIRBORNE IT SEEMS THAT THE RPM GOES UP AND DOWN NOT TO MUCH BUT I CAN HEAR IT...IT DOESN'T HAVE THAT STEADY NOISE...CAN YOU TELL WHAT WOULD BE THE PROBLEM? THANKS IN ADVANCE....
I can think of a few things. First proper tuning of the engine, refer to the video's description to find a link on how to properly tune a gas engine. Second make sure fuel connections are all good; check the clunk and make sure it moves freely. Check the servo and the linkage connections. Check the spark plug and electronic ignition for proper functioning; I have some information on my troubleshooting videos. Finally I have had friends experience signal interference due to connections and vibration. It is the less likely of the problems but I have seen it happen.
Most Definitely! In fact, a proper electric setup will yield more power than a comparable gas engine. However, depending on the cost of the required electric setup, it may be cheaper to use a gas engine. Me personally, I like the sound, smell and performance of a gas engine.I have a 2.3m Composite-Arf Extra 330L powered by a DA-85 that came in at 20.1lb and it is absolutely sick! In fact, it will just about scare you at full throttle! But it's a blast to fly!

+TheRudydog1 Here is the definition I found: Parkflyer models will weigh 2 pounds or less and be incapable of reaching speeds greater than 60 mph. They must be electric or rubber powered,
or of any similar quiet means of propulsion. Models should be remotely controlled or flown with a control line, remain within the pilot's line of sight at all times, and always be flown safely by the
operator.
+TheRudydog1 According to the definition below we can deduct that gas powered planes should be flown in a designated area.
+MoongrassTV Thanks you for the information, That pretty well sets the record straight.
If you flood the engine, cut the ignition, move choke to off, put the carb on full throtle and flip it a few times, you'll clear the cilinders. There is no need to choke with an open throttle, close to idle works just as well and is a lot safer.
And dudes, use the frickin' gloves...
What happems if the thing starts with the choke closed? you cant disengage the choke
o
Won't run with the choke on
Thank you for giving tips I own a sukhoi su -29 and it's electric and I was wondering how much would a plane like yours cost?
There are many factors which will influence the final cost of any plane.
How long can one of those stay aloft?
Depending on the tank's size about 20 to 30 minutes. However most people fly a max of 10 minutes and bring them down. 10 minutes is a safe zone in terms of flight time and it is plenty also.
Thank you for this video! Getting ready to get started with Gas Engines...do you have any experience with DLE engines?...looking to get a DLE 30cc.
John Gwathney verry good motor any dle
Thank you
Thanks
Um thinking of getting my first gas plane im 13 is the ideal the same with most planes?
When you say gas, do you mean actual gasoline and not glow fuel? Glow and gas (gasoline) powered are fairly similar in terms of flying characteristics but the engines are different in tuning and performance. The main advantages of gas powered engines is the low cost of fuel (3 to 5 dollars a gallon compared to 20+ with glow) and no messy oil to clean up after flying.
Yo' Paulie!
what model gas plane would u reccomend for a beginner
If you want to build a kit, AMR makes a 50cc trainer as well as SIG's new giant Rascal, and Hangar 9 makes a 30cc high wing trainer / sport plane ARF called the Valiant. Anything High Wing with lots of wing area preferably with a flat bottom airfoil and dihedral.
How did u switch off the engine?
By flipping a switch on the transmitter that activates the kill switch.
@@ToolsAndI THANK YOU MY FRIEND
What are the reasons for gas engines over electric? Is it just because of size?
+ScottysDetailing It's mainly a matter of personal preference.
Can you do 3D with that size plane on electric Power?
+ScottysDetailing Absolutely.
Electric is boring as hell.
