Shopping List:
Primed trim piece [thd.co/2WrCW1u]
Interior doors [thd.co/2SYElKU]
Bypass door hardware kit [amzn.to/2LrnRqs]
Shims [amzn.to/2WRjt9D]
Steps for installing bypass doors:
1. Start by prepping the opening of the doors. In some cases, it might be necessary to pad the opening with some primed 2x stock material to ensure the opening is the exact width as the width of the doors. If the width of the opening is the correct dimension, notch out the opening to accept the trim piece, which will be added later to hide the track once its installed.
2. Hold the track up to the top of the opening and mark the holes for the screws.
3. Remove the track and drill pilot holes on the marks.
4. Secure the track to the top of the opening using screws that come with the kit.
5. Check the track for level. If it’s out of level, the top of the opening can be padded out with a few shims.
6. Hang the roller hardware into the track. Measure from the bottom of the floor to the hardware. Subtract ½” to allow for some clearance for the door.
7. Transfer that measurement to each door and cut the door to size using the track saw. Be sure to cut off material from the bottom of each door.
8. Mount the roller hardware to the door about 1” in on both sides with the drill driver and provided screws.
9. Hang the doors on the track.
10. Place the floor guide on the floor and place the doors in each slot. Once the floor guide is in a good location, secure it to the floor with screws.
11. Drill a hole in each door using a Forstner bit to accept a finger pull that comes with the kit. This will allow the doors to be easily opened and closed.
12. Attach the trim piece in the two notches that were cut in the opening to hide the track. Secure them with a brad nailer.
Resources:
Nathan installed two JELD-WEN Colonist Primed wood interior doors [thd.co/2SYElKU] that most closely matched the dimensions of the opening. Nathan recommends ensuring the door has not been pre-hung and does not have bore holes in it for a standard knob. These doors can be found at home centers.
To make the doors bypass, Nathan mounted a Bypass Door Hardware kit [amzn.to/2LrnRqs], which is manufactured by Johnson Hardware (www.johnsonhardware.com/). The kit comes with all the hardware required to mount the doors.
All the other tools and materials required to install these doors can be found at home centers.

How to Install Bypass Pantry Doors | Ask This Old House

I'm a 73 yr old female and this was best of many videos I have watched. It was great, steady filming with no fluff. No dogs or snazzy intros that make me cringe. Breaks in filming reduce wasted time. Most of all it is accurate. Thanks This Old House!
Nathan, thank you for teaching me something new... about building up the sides of the vertical posts... genius 👍
You're doing a great job, young man 😊
From Oregon!
I love the charisma between these two guys...
Excellent video. This is definitely a DIY project i'm going to tackle.
Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!
Thanks for the video ,very informative!
Thank you so much. Great video ! So much better than most !
He learned very well from Tom.
Joe Kinchicken nothing wrong with Toms accent. I kinda like it. Nothernars
Even has his airless nail gun
For those of you who want to know what this kit is, I did some research. It appears to be the Johnson 1166 Series. It is NOT the kit at the link in the description above, and it is much cheaper.
well done !
Rule of thumb after learning from old time carpenter's and almost 40 years in construction always ease the sharp edges on vertical trim less chance of a piece brakeing off if it gets hit.
Ah, good tip, thanks! How would you do that? Sand paper?
Niceeee. It's needs some of that soft close luxury feel though
I wouldn't have mounted the track directly to that trim above the door - it's probably MDF and only lightly nailed in to the framing in the wall above. Notice how the drill went through and there was nothing behind. Those hollow doors are light, but they could still pull the track out over time. Instead, they should screwed a piece of 3/4" solid wood to the studs in the frame, then then hung the track from the wood.
Ooh, good call
Good video thank you much
Simple solution when bifold and pocket doors are not an option due to clearances. The opening was wide enough to accommodate full sized doors. Our pantry was much narrower. Wound up using bifold doors as the two bypass doors (remove bifold hardware, fill holes). Tricky part was how little wood there is in the inside of the bifold doors. Went with larger rectangular finger pulls so it wouldn’t look like a bedroom closet.
Excellent job ... he learned from the best ... but was that a handshake ??!! 🤔😷
PRETTY COOL
Excellent video as usual. Could you please come to my house and build a partial wall and put some bi-fold doors in to make me a pantry would be an excellent video. Thanks guys as a first time homeowner your videos are invaluable to me. Keep up the good work.
What about a vid on how to align the doors to the track.
Watching the homeowner drill that hole at an angle made me chuckle.
What’s the best way to do this for a closet where the carpet goes from the bedroom into the closet? Would you cut out a piece of the carpet for the floor piece (would that change your measurement?), or would you screw it right into the carpet? Thanks.
Looks good
Wouldn’t it have been easier to paint the doors first and then hang them?
Always easier to paint a door after it’s hung. No worries about scuffing the fresh paint at installation, and you can fill , caulk and paint in one shot.
Nathan did a great job.with this vid, he just needs Tom's accent now!! 🤫😊
Nice, but @5:50 you could've just painted them when they were off the hinges. (Looked he might've also cut off the whole internal blocking on the bottom of the door vs. saving and reinstalling some in the hollow core.)
I am subscribed to TOH, but starting yesterday your videos no long show up in my Subscription feed. What's up, UA-cam?
I can confirm, I have this same issue. I tried to unsubscribe and resubscribe but that did not resolve the issue. Missed the last 3 videos they have posted
Gotta hit the notification bell because subscriptions don't mean much to youtube anymore...
Its the algorithm. if you venture off and start watching other categories of videos, The algorithm will focus on similar content. For instance, if you start to watch tech related videos, then thats what youtube will focus on only showing similar videos
Same issue here. I only realized this because I saw a new upload in recommended...and there were like four videos that never made my subscription.
Over a week and I'm still having these issues...
If I already have old doors and a sliding system, can I just replace the panels with new ones and use the old sliding system?
What size pantry doors were used for the 6ft. track for this pantry?
Tom silva
"Well, we want to get new doors but we haven't yet so just match the new thing to the old doors." Your wife's gonna hate that, bro! She's gonna be like "Well now we can't get new doors without also getting new sliding pantry doors to replace the brand new ones you just had installed."
Looks like he caught the Festool bug from Tommy. Sure that track saw is handy but the Festool drill? Buy a DeWalt
Where's Tommy? 😑
"It looks like you make a lot of sandwiches so I installed these foot-operated condiment dispensers so you can PUMP UP THE JAM"
Now put a door or two on that spice rack!
Client had good hands
would have been nice not to cut away from how they cut the ends off of those shims.
That will be the biggest PITA for someone cooking. Imagine looking for an ingredient - Is it in this side? Nope! Slide the door...nope....slide it back. Bypass doors are good for saving space, but suck for everyday access.
hahahaahha close those ingredients...... you funny bro
now it really looks like a laundry closet
Can you guys please post a video on my birthday it's the 23rd of may
No good without Tom Silva 😕
Where are the old
Hosts
Napping
Resting at home
The existing skirting board is short and needs replacing!
On the right? Good eye!
Not sold on this, I would have installed pocket doors. Kinda a cludgy solution since you can only have one side open at a time.
the amount of extra work for the pocket doors would be ridiculous and given the situation it looks like it wouldnt work on this one
What part of the wall would the TWO pocket doors go into? Look very close there is no accessible wall on either side.
Didn't look like there was space for a pocket door. Only other option would be bi/tri fold doors.
Pocket doors? 😂 there’s no room for them!
What about a garage door?
Where the hell is Tom?
Hooray, I found flour at the grocery store !
That was an awkward opening
He needs a bit more expression in his voice
I'm upset they showed the finished product.
So I take it that this guy is phasing out Tom Silva, he's the last to go, out with the old and in with the new. The host of the show is the next to go .... tick tock ... tick tock .... it's just a matter of time now
Closet can you tell us what is your phone number
That looks awful. The base does not have any relation to the door and both sides do not match.
If they had bothered painting the walls in the pantry and improved lighting, there's no need for doors. Adding them in really ruined the space and just boxed in the kitchen.
If I bought the house, those doors would get ripped out first to both get rid of the space ruining doors but to also make the pantry 100% more functional.
A pantry only half accessible at a time is horrible.
Felipe Pubillones My first thought was about how annoying it would be to have to keep moving the doors to access everything.
DR PHIL why are you spending all day in your pantry? 🤔
This was so weird. The fake dialog bet the 2 made this seem like a show.. hated it
Standard for TOH.
