Hearing the lines "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing loud for all to hear" and "How would you like to be, dead?" just makes me wish I was watching the original film instead. Don't get me wrong, I respect the talent and artistry behind this special, but I feel more people would be more forgiving towards it if it didn't have any connection towards a near-perfect Christmas film that came out 11 years prior. Because the thing that made the original Elf work so good is that Buddy was esentially a puppy-eyed, cartoon character that existed in an otherwise realistic setting, and it made for some great comedy and heartfelt moments. But in this special, ALL the characters seemed to have been turned into cartoonish caricatures (figuaratively and litteraly), so the comedy never takes a break to let the characters be characters and the heartfelt moments feels so flat.
In the original, Buddy didn't fight back, but in this one, he did.
Someone play Bird from Fred Claus
