- YORK PARISH #28: WIGGINTON
With four to go in York, today we’re in Wigginton, a large village situated 4 miles north of the city centre. Once again we’re in a place that was never historically a York village, and has only been a part of it since 1996. The village was named in the Domesday Book as “Wichestun”, which became “Wygynton” in the 13th century. The first recorded owners of the manor were the Askebys, who may have been connected with the neighbouring village of Haxby, which now merges with Wigginton through extensive residential development.
There are no steep hills here. The whole area it stands within is generally flat ground. There are no major rivers although there is a small beck to the west of the village. If its water features you wan though, Wigginton has you covered. The absolute centre of the place has well maintained pond which looked fabulous in the June sunshine. That’s definitely on our route.
Interestingly, there are two theories that surround the derivation of the village’s name. One says that its of Norse origin, deriving from the word “Vikigr”, making this “Viking hamlet”. The other is a bit more creepy. It says its from the Old English personal name - "Wicga" which means "beetle" apparently. By extension then, Wigginton would then be the “settlement of the beetle” or “beetle town”.
Now I’m not one for creepy crawlies, so hopefully this one’s more about Vikings! Lets go!

The founders of Northern Scientific (Barry Davies and Clive Brookes) worked in the Chemistry Labs back in the 1960s when I was a Junior Technician. As such I spent a short time training with both of them.
