- YORK PARISH #29: HAXBY
Welcome back to York everyone. It’s been a long time, but finally, the last three episodes in this series are coming at you. This is the town of Haxby, located to the North of York and bounded by the parish of Wigginton to the West with which it shares a continuous urban area. Its name is of Old Norse origin and derives from “Hákr's settlement”. It was recorded as Haxebi in the Domesday Book.
Haxby is the dictionary definition of modern suburbia. Stretching all the way to the York outer ring road, Haxby has grown massively in the last century, and now sports a population well in excess of 8,000 people. Haxby’s history is believed to go back to the 9th century when the Vikings invaded this part of Yorkshire. This theory is backed up by a Viking cross base in the churchyard. There is evidence of Roman occupation too, with the 1966 discovery of a Roman villa on Haxby Moor being the biggest clue.
Much of its current centre is 18th and early 19th century architecturally, but significant redevelopment took place in Victorian times. It was at this time, with the arrival of the railway, that the village became a popular place to live and commute from. Now, four times the size of the place it was back then, Haxby was awarded town status in 1992. Its town centre, or old core if you will, is is still known as The Village and its been a conservation area since 1976.
Right, hiking boots on, lets go for a long, long walk!

Haxby civilian here! Watched Wigginton, really enjoyed! Hope you like our parish 😊
My home town, glad you finally made it
I live in the house at 19.42! This was built for the schoolmaster of Haxby School-now the Memorial Hall-again in 1876. The first schoolmaster was called Jonathon Arnold and his wife and daughter also worked in the school. It was then a dog kennels and cattery in the 1960”s but was compulsory purchased by the council due to noise complaints from the people who moved into the new estate that is now known as Oaken Grove. It then became a vets practice until the early 1990’s when it was sold and turned back into a home.
Also Haxby Shopping centre was designed by Lewis Barker, my wife’s former father in law who was also a renowned cricketer in York and Yorkshire!
What's the odds of you showing Oak Tree Court, I work there every Friday and nip into the Morrisons for a bite to eat 🙂
1:58 eyyy Paddyfields!
