Seagulls NESTING on our roof (you won't believe what happens next)

  • In this slightly chaotic and unscheduled video, an unprecedented heatwave hits the UK, breaking all previous temperature records. Our thoughts immediately turned to a brood of three seagull chicks nesting on the roof of our house. Throughout the afternoon, Stephen provided fresh water in 40C+ (100F+) conditions, and even had to reunite one of the little birds when it fell off the roof.

A quick update on the seagulls, another one fell off at some point this morning, into my neighbour's garden. Safely rescued and reunited again, but it's only a matter of time before we get a hat-trick of over-adventurous birds! Thank you all for watching!

We had to rescue then a few more times after this, but they are have now all flown the nest healthy and still come back to visit the roof regularly. Thanks for watching 💕

I once lived in apartment with no air conditioning when the temperatures were as hot as you’re experiencing. I survived by keeping my windows and curtains closed during the hot part of the day. Then, when the temperature outside was cooler than it was inside, I opened all of my windows (2 windows and a sliding glass door) and blew the hot air out of the apartment with a fan. It helped keep the temperature tolerable. Taking frequent cool showers helps too. If all else fails, go to the cinema!

Ahahahaha I LOVE your vlogs. Keep 'em coming. Owning a parrot, I love that you are kind and caring toward tge seagulls. Here in Canada, it used to be decades ago that we'd suffer through a a few days of near 30 degrees. Now it's a week or more near 40! Fortunately, most of us have central AC.

Agreed…keep your drapes pulled closed as much as possible and windows closed. Hot here in US as well but thankful for a/c! You might invest in a window or floor unit to keep at least one area cool for sleeping. Stay hydrated but leave the watering of plants for after dark or early morning. Water droplets on petals and leaves acts as a magnifying glass.

The summers are getting worse and worse. I’m in Northeast USA. People complain about the winter because they can’t go outside, but you can’t go outside in August either because it’s so hot and humid.

Bravo Stephen 🤩 Loved this episode 😍 Sorry about the heat but we’re all going to have to get used to it cuz I don’t think it’ll get reversed any time soon 🥵. It’s been between 100 and 105 here in Northern California over the past couple of weeks, and it’ll get up to 110(43C) or more in August 🤷🏼‍♀️. Do your best to stay cool 🙃🤞🏻

This was really fun to watch, Stephen! Saving the seagulls. We're a few hours from you in Worthing for the summer. Much more bearable to get through this heat wave near the sea. London's temperatures were terrible. Hopefully the rest of your summer is more of a typical English summer.

I was in the UK that week! On the hottest day we were in the Scottish Highlands so the temps were not as bad, but fires en route to London (where my daughter lives) affected our return train! Not having the A/C was what did us in that week! I’m from the California desert where it’s far hotter, but with low humidity and A/C in every house, car, and store!!! Stay cool Stephen and Claire!!

It's a frigid 39C here, and no air conditioning either, with more to come this week, which is so NOT normal. Good times! I try to mitigate it by blowing in the cooler air when the sun goes down, then closing all doors, windows and curtains against the sun, until sunset again. Multiple fans and a dehumidifier seems to help as well.

On another note, it was neat to see your guys’ workspaces and puppy. I like the new hairdo too; hopefully it can help you stay cool! Cheers!

We freeze water in small containers from the grocery store to add to our chickens water. They do drink more when it's hot so it seems that if the water is cooler is might also give them some relief. And we freeze small berries that we give them as treats. Maybe the seagulls need a small umbrella for shade...? I mean the temperature on a roof must be the worst and a tree just takes too long to grow. We're about 45 minutes west of Chicago, but we do sometimes hear the odd seagull overhead. Can't wait to see Kew Gardens!

    • @StephenandClaire

Thank you for the comment Kris - the birds have been very grateful of the offerings of water. The parents have even stopped shouting at us when we dare venture foot into our own garden 😂 Kew Gardens is going to be brilliant - we're putting the finishing touches to it tonight.

You excel in Seagull Husbandry!!! This was very entertaining. In SE USA we've been having day after day of temps in the 90s F with several days over 100F. I thankfully have central air conditioning and tend to stay inside during the hottest part of the day (which is most of the day - after 10 am - 8 pm). As everyone else has said - stay hydrated!!! I also like the idea of the poster who said to keep some wet towels near your fans. Some of the restaurants that have outside seating around here have someway of combiinng mists of water with fans - that does seem to help!

Greetings from central Texas! Our power grid is running at 97% and I’m concerned we will lose power again. I do have generator this time. I saw a video on UA-cam on how to make a homemade swamp cooler with a fan, clothes rack and wet towels. It may be worth a try . You may want to take a dip in the Mapperton pool. It will cool your core down and make the heat more tolerable. Does Claire ever get to drive Peggy?

It can so miserable. I've spent some days without a/c but not many. It's 38C/100F where I am in the central USA with humidity at 50%. Humidity can really up the danger and feel of the heat. I once lived somewhere where it hit 110F/43C but humidity was at about 10%. That was fairly bearable, if you didn't spend all day in the sun. How humid is it where you are? Poor Claire with the fire alarm going off!!! Wow. Very nice of you to give water to the seagulls. Indeed, without a little help, they might die under a solar panel and you wouldn't want the stench, as you said! Glad the mother calmed down. You neither would want a nose diving seagull. It would be too much like a Hitchcock film!

I'm in Florida and it's not as hot here as it is there. But I hear Oklahoma has been hit with a scorcher. It's hot 110 and 118 in some parts.
To help with the heat. Fill open ice chest with ice and blow a fan across the top. Also put a wet rag around your neck. (Usually a nylon or spandex type material, they have what we call cooling rags or clothes that we use in the states where if you get wet or sweat, the wetness cools you off.)

When my blue and gold macaw was younger, his cage was in a sunroom on a day it got rather warm. We saw him panting and rescued him. A few days later, with the temperature several degrees lower, he saw us watching him and began panting...he remembered that had been a trigger to get him in with the family. (Doubt this is the case with your panting houseguests, but panting birds always remind me of that story.)
The chick that fell was likely able to flap its wings well enough not to thud down like the rock in the container, judging from how it ran from you and how vigorously it protested being picked up.

    • @StephenandClaire
      @StephenandClaire  2 роки тому +2

We're not sure if it was the same one, but we found another chick in a neighbour's garden the next day, and promptly rescued that one too. I'd guess it was the same one, as it was far less vocal about being picked up this time, almost like it was embarrassed about making the same mistake twice! Thank you for the comment, glad you enjoyed this video.
