    Exceptionally well done! Great points about most cards not being faked. Another reprehensible thing these people do is fake slabs. And some look spot on. I think I saw breakout cards do a video on it. I think you hit on it…the trust thing. Who can we trust now. Between the hobby, the government, you name it…the list of those we can trust (outside of friends and family) is dwindling away rapidly.

    I definitely think during the card boom these flipper/investor channels served their purpose for the growth on the business end of the hobby. But they didn’t make things better for true collectors!
    I definitely agree with a lot of what you have to say here and definitely share your worry as I’ve noticed a trend towards vintage cards by the investor crowd since the recession started. While I know this will undoubtedly have a negative affect on me being able to get some vintage cards on my list, the optimist in me hopes that a small percentage of the “sheep” following investors get a hold of vintage cards and get the itch to become new collectors on the vintage end!
    Regardless of the future of this hobby I am confident our community of knowledgeable collectors will remain strong and welcome in many more people who truly love the cards and not just the plastic and cash! Great discussion and very much enjoyed reading through the comments tons of passion 💪🏼

    Very good video. I educated myself and learnt that ANY vintage card with (what I call) "cracking" on the surface, is simply a counterfeit card. I did what you did and bought many reprints, along with some authentic low-end vintage to learn about. There's plenty of very cheap cards to learn on. A combination of cheap reprints and cheap authentic vintage cards is an incredible learning tool! I bought a 1952 Mantle before, and it was a really good looking one. It was a beater, but I didn't mind...it was a Mantle! However, the seller's reputation was questionable. Card consisted of a massive miscut, though, in which part of Jackie Robinson was shown on the side of the card. I had never seen anything like it and just knew there was no way it could've been faked with it being that way. Seller claimed he desperately needed cash and was looking for a quick sell. I paid a pretty penny for it and sacrificed cashing in some good cards over it. The moment the card arrived, I took a loupe to it and instantly knew it was a faked card. I confronted the seller and instantly packed it up and sent it back. He argued he didn't sell fake cards, but being as educated as I was about what I was looking at, I knew he was an unscrupulous seller and a liar. He argued and called me names. Ultimately, he finally refunded me, but I lost many good cards over it that I simply couldn't recover. If I had not known the difference, though, then that card would've went to grading and came back counterfeit. That SAME card sold on eBay not long ago for a grand or better. Guys, please be careful and educate yourself.

      Yea I would stay away from raw ones unless you really know how to tell. There are lots of videos on it but I think the best way is to shine a black light on it. Fakes will look like a negative and real ones look normal.

  • @IloveSituandbob

    New here and new to the hobby, or shall I say returning to it from back when I was a kid 😊.
    I want to say that your outlook on the hobby of card collecting is pretty accurate in stating that it’s paranoid.
    I’m not well versed in the grading system nor the rules or guidelines that they follow in order to produce the truest grade to the item that’s in question, Im surprised to learn that they don’t set a better standard. To have so many consumers and collectors value and rely on their “educated opinion” for the condition of their card yet they are willing to grade unauthentic or fakes could cast a shadow on the service as a whole and perhaps lead people to think they’re not as reliable as we’re led to believe. I could be mistaken or missing something due to my freshness so pardon my ignorance if that’s the case. I only bring up the grading point because there’s a big business in scamming and it’s a huge problem in the collector market in general and the amount of money that people get fooled out of is insane and disappointing and the trading cards are one of those targets.
    Thanks for the video and the informational wisdom within it.

    It is absolutely horrible customer service if you spend money to have a card graded and it's sent back "authentic" without any reason given. But I've found that a lot of people in the baseball card industry lack the kind of courtesy you'd demand in other businesses. Card collectors just accept it - like sending cards to PSA and waiting more than a year to get them back.

    • @MrJmangini
      @MrJmangini  2 роки тому +1

      I agree 100%. I’ve always said the same thing. It’s because collectors have always allowed grading companies to control our hobby instead of the other way around.

    I have a bunch of 1978 cards I bought decades ago that I just noticed were probably hand cut from sheets. Many are in mint condition except for the slightly off cutting of the edges. Would this cause them to be graded "authentic" or would only the centering points be deducted? Thanks if you can answer. Buyers should also be aware that these days, those who hawk fakes rarely have the audacity to simply try to sell it as authentic for a high price. Widespread grading and authentication and also peer review on the internet has made this rare. What they do instead is tell the prospective buyer that they think it's legit but because they can't say 100% they are just "selling it as a reprint." The idea is to tempt a sucker to overpay hoping they'll beat the odds and get a huge deal on a real card. Because the fakes are worth nothing, even if the seller gets $50 or $100 they still made a nice profit and also covered their own ass by admitting it could be fake. So this method is preferable for scammers. It can't be said enough that it almost never happens that someone just tries to sell a fake 52 Mantle on eBay for thousands of dollars. Fakes are actually quite easy to avoid.

    T206 Wagner cards were also printed with Piedmont backs, not just Sweet Caporal. If you see one with an Old Mill or a Ty Cobb back, or Hindu, or any other back it is obviously 100% fake.
