    Getting the surface reworked.

That mating surface will give you nothing but grief down the line. Having it resurfaced is undoubtedly the move. Given it’s the fiftieth anniversary and a one year only color-way, I imagine you ask a little bit more for this one all cleaned up and dialed. Knock those stickers back, dial it in, clean it up, and you’re in great shape. You know all this. Much love from Massachusetts.

When you do head gaskets I recommend resurfacing the head and cylinder . At least with a sand paper on a glass or granite surface and doing a 8 motion. That would help the seal and remove warpednes

THE HEAD NEEDS TO BE FIXED!!! What you got is known as a torched head, even the smallest imperfection on the head that can interfere with the head gasket WILL make it leak no matter how small. I would either send it in and have it fixed or weld it with some aluminum welding sticks and resurface the head. Good luck 2vintage 👍

Easy to tell if you have a low spot in that area on the head. Colour the surface with marker then use some super fine grade sand paper (2000grit) or close then place on perfectly flat surface and run the mating surface over the sandpaper a few times and the low areas should show as the marker will have not been removed. Then you should have your answer. Good luck with it. 🤟

Take some spray contact cement and glue a sheet of sand paper to a piece of glass or other flat surface and lay the head on it and evenly rub the head across the paper changing directions a couple times. In regards to the Head I guess it all depends on whether , A- like being stranded. B- want to push it back. C- what's your time is worth. The last guy probably thought it would be fine too. A good tech would go ahead and just have it resurfaced or replace it pending cost vs value, a seasoned Pro-Tech that warranties his work would very likely to go as far as replacing the head bolts ,especially it's torque to yield. If you don't then there's no reason to get a new head gasket and use the old one clean it up with some Scotch-Brite Debbie some rvt and or graphite on it and crank it down tight +5% . when it fails in the future that is where it will fail. you seem like a smart dude so, I know where you pretty much lineup on that or you wouldn't of asked about 3 times. Either way pretty informative can't wait to see running.

By the looks of that head it has never been milled let alone cleaned. Planing/resurfacing/decking a head using a flat surface with fine grit sandpaper is always a must when there are deformities present. Make sure to check what compression ratio the current aftermarket piston.. that will give you an idea what your squish is going to be after you resurface the head. Also it would be wise to check the surface of the old cylinder as well. That will tell you how long the problem has existed. The number one talent that a good mechanic must have is the ability to diagnose an issue... you my friend are second to none! Now all you need are the right tricks and tools up your sleeve to resolve these issues. I've followed you now for a few years and your progress has astounded me! Keep up the great work!

Isn't that rubber/plastic cover the one that goes over carbs and under fuel tank? Not the skid plate for axle?

I'd get that head decked if I were you. At least JB weld the corroded spots and resurface the head on a deck plate.

loose Bolts so there its the reason at oil and water have mixed, but i still would take the parts in machinest to the surface cleaning and take out thats much at all imperfections are gone because its can still blow casket.

by the look of the top of the piston also a sign of head gasket leaking, also you need a new bolt and possibly a tap? also i feel like that spot will leak eventually
