Hi Mike. Thanks for your balanced views about this subject. Would you please contact Bruce Simpson (xjet and RC Model Reviews on UA-cam) in New Zealand about this? I think that the two of you might be able to throw some serious and well-reasoned weight behind the defence of hobbyists around the globe. Model aircraft, quadcopters and drones are all being conflated as drones, when this is patently not true.
Some very important points to note: In many lands, model aircraft, and indeed amateur drones, are restricted to flying below 400 feet agl, and away from airports and unauthorised landing strips, whereas piloted aircraft are restricted to flying above 500 feet agl, and often higher in urban areas, except for during takeoff and landing, or in dire emergencies. So in theory, there is a safety buffer zone, and so model aircraft, including model drones, only need to be tracked to ensure that they remain below the 400' agl restriction. It is very likely that they do not need to be tracked at all:
There have been a grand total of 0 (zero) deaths or serious injuries caused by civilian model aircraft or drones colliding with manned aircraft. Yet there are probably millions of model aircraft around the planet. On the other hand, how many deaths or serious injuries are there _each year_ as the result of a manned (piloted) aircraft mishap? My guess is that it's substantially greater than zero!
And what damage does a model aircraft do to a piloted machine when the two collide at maybe a couple of hundred mph? Little more than a scratch, in the couple of confirmed collisions. (I checked, and the number really is that small.)
But what happened to the alleged drone on those occasions? In one, the debris was not positively identified as being from a model aircraft. In the other, the model drone was destroyed completely, as they are expected to be - but the full-size aircraft was flying below the legal minimum altitude in that incident. According to already established law, the two should not even have crossed paths, and the licensed pilot was out of order.
Model aircraft of any category pose _no threat_ to life or limb, and certainly pose no measurable threat to a helicopter, jet or other manned flying vehicle. Furthermore all of the RC model flyers whom I have met over the past 6 decades have been responsible people who are situationally aware whenever manned aircraft are in the local airspace. I have never seen anyone injured, except for a few bruised fingers - and a few very minor burns back in the heyday of nitro-fuelled models. Most models today are battery powered, and have very short flight endurance times of less than about 20 minutes, and most often less than 10 minutes.
If the legislation is passed as it stands, then the model aircraft hobby will become stifled, and possibly strangled out of existence. And where did most aircraft pilots begin their interest in flying 'real' aircraft? Got it in one; model flying. Most people will see the red tape as being too much, and either forget the hobby, or else go rogue and ignore licensing altogether. By registering a model aircraft, a person is in effect registering themselves on a list of 'prime suspects' for criminal activity whenever a 'drone' is sighted in an inappropriate place. Nobody with a level head would enjoy being registered as a criminal when they are indulging in a healthy, harmless and educational pastime.
We also know that no amount of legislation will curtail the hardened criminals of this world. So the net result is that the 'authorities' will rake in a substantial amount of licensing revenue, and revenue from prosecution of ,offenders' for a short while, while model flying goes through its death throes.
      Thanks, if you read this.

Massive shout-out to how Mike communicated the FAA drone business. I really appreciate that he actually explained how he feels and why rather than trying to get his audience to mindlessly follow his beliefs. This is the kind of conduct that I believe we should see from every person in a position to influence public opinion. Help people think for themselves.

Mike I can't thank you enough for addressing the Remote ID NPRM and not only enticing people to comment but could also get someone new in the Hobby as well. Model airplanes are what started my family going down the aviation path as well starting with my grampa in the the late 30s now we run an FBO as well as I fly Drones for my local Sheriff's Office. Remote ID does make sense for commercial drone use, but not for traditional model aircraft that have been operating with a near PERFECT safety record for longer than manned flight. It is a major stepping stone for countless people getting into aviation and it needs to be saved. You are the man Mike!!

I have had an interest, unfortunately not a passion, for airplanes from childhood. The closest to aviation I have ever been in real life was four years in the USAF back in the mid 1960's while working as an electronics tech on the F-105 Thunderchief. At Nellis AFB I had the good fortune of going up with a Major in a T-33. Thanks to that generous officer I can say that I have my only stick time. He encouraged me to handle the climb out after we were off the ground. Later in the flight he showed me how to do an aileron roll and then let me actually do it. Twice. What a thrill. Mike I wanted to take a moment to thank you for what you do. You have a passion but more than that you share that passion with others. But it even goes beyond that. You do not hoard your knowledge. You go out of your way to encourage others to challenge themselves and you take the time to show them how and share the techniques. I now know more about making molds from wood and aluminum than I ever thought possible.. I have a better understanding of carbon fiber and it's uses than I will ever need. Not skills I will ever use but knowledge into this 77 year old mind just the same. You have kept me interested in every one of your videos. Thank you so very much. Please, please continue to do as you do. You are a brilliant light shining for others to see and follow.

Thank you mike for putting out the message on the FAA and model aircraft. I myself have been flying model aircraft for 25 years, the love and passion I have for this hobby is unbeatable. If this passes it will destroy the hobby as we know it. I’m Third generation in RC flying, I come from a long back round of Aviation as my dad, grandfather, great grandfather and uncles fly real aircraft. I build scale warbirds and do some go fast planes over 200mph. The hours spent into this hobby are crazy and drones and model aircraft do NOT need to be labeled under the same.

I am a retired mechanic will be 70 yrs old 11/22/2020..So i have watched every minute of every build you have ever posted.. You are awesome as my grand kids would say..I agree.I have a couple ideas rolling around in my head. #1 is creating electricity while you are flying.I know a wee bit about the conservation of energy i got from youtube science clips. BUT. i also look at E gliders and E planes..Great ideas..I love the flying cowboys you're an awesome group.#2 Enough here's my thought. If you have an air intake tube close to the fuselage on both sides and notch it so a vane turbine protrudes into the pipe and spins like hell as you fly along,It could create shaft driven electricity to charge batteries that could run 2 ducted fans built into your wings to assist sitting your ass down right on the mark..Also i thought of using that energy to run you propeller and save on gas..or as a back up..eng failure.. Generator failure , instruments etc. ps Loving Scrappy Doo..I know video production can be a time consuming pain in the Azz but we love them.

I was an A&P, and later an I.A. for a total of 42 years. When I retired I met with an FAA rep to tell him I was not going to touch another airplane and proceeded to get out a pair of scissors to cut up the licenses and hand him the pieces. He told me I needed to do a form letter to turn them in. Oh yeah? I don't have to do anything of the kind. After looking over the rules they are proposing (I only went far enough to realize it was far too tedious a chore) I decided I better not post the comments I had on my mind. Jeff Bezos is probably mostly responsible for the proposed rules and his desire to launch drones to deliver Amazon packages as a way of saving on transportation costs. The rural area where I live has USPS, UPS and FEDEX trucks drive by everyday. IMHO the FAA should spend more time on commercial aviation and the problem of oversight and certification of airliners, so they don't have another embarrassing scenario develop like the 737 800 Max on their hands. There are two phrases in the US Constitution I want to refer to. They are "the pursuit of happiness" and "shall not be infringed." What are they going to do next? Regulate us out of flying our flight simulators on the PC? In short, it seems the FAA is looking for a solution to a problem that does not exist when they have enough existing problems to deal with. Do not waste taxpayer dollars on regulating a hobby out of business.

Love your videos. Really appreciate you getting the word out on the proposed FAA rules regarding identification. I've been flying RC for many years and am genuinely concerned about the future of the sport. Thanks again!

Mike, you are such a blessing my friend. Thank you for your attitude toward life, people.... your a breath of fresh air in a society of deceit and lies. You set a high standard for everyone. Thank you Mike. I hope one day I get to meet you and thank you in person. Your influence has quite literally changed my life.

His pile of commercial parts, structures, frames, entire sub assembly of aircraft that were good enough but not right for him is amazing. What is truly amazing is he is not a boat or aviation design consultant working on the products we fly. Cessna took 50+ years to evolve to the design quality level he puts together in a 2 man shop at 2am. I am floored by everything he builds, on the design vision and most important for the builder he sends good vibes into crowds wherever he arrives in style.

Mike I appreciate you stepping up and making your opinion on the FAA regulations to come and as a RC PILOT myself I have made my opinion to the FAA I did it a couple weeks prior to this contest but that's ok it's so cool to see you backing the RC community and let's hope that the FAA actually hears what we are saying. SCRAPPY IS looking awesome Mike. Your incredible DUDE. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FINISHED PLANE 👍🏽👍🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸✌🏼✌🏼

Good morning Mike. I worked in a Fiberglass shop for several years making Plugs and moulds for custom parts . The process is in the details and thinking about being able to get the part out of the mould and can you get in the tight spots as your doing every thing inside out basically. Like your 3or 4 degrees on the sides of your panel to be able to pull it. I love the challenge of making some thing that didn’t exist until YOU make it. Satisfying beyond belief. PS. I know your a Wizard and at one with the Mat. Because you make it look easy. And you know what they say about people that make stuff look easy.......... Dam..... that guy knows his shit.......Back to Work

Mike, thank you so much for giving some attention to the FAA's Remote ID NPRM. It's as though the regulators don't even know that traditional model aviation exists. I know they use the word "drone" to mean any unpiloted aircraft, but they seem to have no concept of what a fixed-wing RC aircraft needs to operate. Hopefully your video will reach a segment of the aviation community that might not have seen the issue otherwise.

  • @VentShop
    @VentShop 4 роки тому +3

The panel will look great. Gonna have to put something in so the passenger can watch the movie too though. Maybe just a drop down overhead screen instead of watching it on the panel.
And I have a drone that I have not flown since my wife passed collecting dust but I have to agree that adding more to it and forcing me to pay for it will kill my ability to enjoy the hobby. I generally stay below the treeline anyway and live next to an airport and have had zero issues. A better option IMHO would be an app that tracks the pilot in an area and gives them warnings and alerts when they can not fly and when there is a manned aircraft coming into their area so they can land safely before. It's a few jackwagons who are causing issues and they will continue to do so even after the rule is put into place. It's not like the cheap Chinese rc aircraft are going to magically go away or have this stuff put on from the factory. And good luck trying to enforce it unless they are going to start going around every city with a set of binoculars and a few hundred boots on the ground. This will just drive it underground and we all know how well that will work out. I mean come on, the laws passed for the war on drugs hasn't stopped anything. Nor have the anti piracy laws for software and media.
