NV122 Fixing my HW98's dark secret. HW98 TBT Short Stroke Kit Installation & Problems. Watch before.

  • Well that was a shock. My HW98 decided it identifies as an unregistered firearm so that needed sorting out.
Enter a Tin Bum Tuning Kit with short stroke.
Will it fit, will it work? Will it ruin my favourite airgun? Some of these questions may be answered, probably in the comments before I have a chance to film part 2.
Who else can't wait for part 2?

Short stroke is causing the reduced power.
The addition of the washers to increase preload could make it tougher and harsher to shoot, the opposite of what the kit sets out to offer?

    • @nickvending9688

That's my fear with it. The 98 was always docile to shoot, I don't want that to have changed.
But a lot of people rave about these kits, so I'll have to wait and see.

It is shocking that a rifle bought over the counter can be over. That is worrying especially if naive enough not to test from time to time

I reckon there's a lot of over power from the factory airguns out there and I'm told ignorance is not an excuse.
I'm keeping everything crossed that the rifle will be what the kit manufacturer claims.

so did exactly the same to my 98 (small tip use a smaller washer or a pound coin for removing the spring works a treat ) fir my gun it was very good indeed power was 10.5 which is bang on what u wanted and it shoots very well indeed no more twang and the shot cycle is much better . recoil is pretty linear and very easy to manage . good good mate be interesting to see how that shoots . however i think he has given you the wrong spring mine was probably only 1to 1/2 coils shorter that the stock spring and i have one power washer

I really should have come in the house to get a coin, problem is I then get grabbed by Mrs V and commandeered to help with X job, cook tea, clear up my mess etc.
Glad to hear yours worked out well, fingers crossed mine follows suit.
It was supposedly the pro kit with export spring, but yes I think it probably wasn't the right one.

Had problems with a hw99 with a tbt maxi kit the springs are supposed to be pre scragged but gave up with the kit in the end and used the original spring with made quides at present got a Welsh Willy kit sitting on shelf to go in . The new springs with the tbt kits don’t seem perform that well and still suffer length loss early on leading to stripping down and adding more washers to get the power back up . If you glue a couple of tap washers together when you remove the back block just push the action down on them and twist do the same with my 95 very easy

Thanks, that explains why the preload reduced so much.
I bought 2 kits, this full pro short stroke kit for the 98 and a standard kit for my 77. I think I'll look at alternative options in future.

I hope you have better luck with your WW kit. The one I got the spring was unfinished on the ends and was very rough ground. The spring was loose on the guide and twanged as bad as the factory gun. I told them about the issues and sent back the spring and guide and they supposedly sent me a new guide, but it was still loose and twanged. A lot of these cheaper kits with the white delrin are just knocked up in a shed by people that don't really know what they're doing. I'd say pay a little more and go for a Vmach, but I don't think they're around any more.

@@nickvending9688 Are they still going then? I have been out of the airgun hobby for a long time and noticed their site no longer works. I got a Vmach kit in my HW97 back when it was called Webley Venom and it shoots amazingly well. No twang and just a very fast and subdued shot cycle. I also bought a second hand Webley Tomahawk about 10 years ago that had a stage 1 Vmach kit fitted and that also shoots great. Comparing the kits side by side with the cheaper versions available really shows where the extra money goes. I do hope I can still get a kit for the HW98 I plan to buy.

I've found that the best spacer to use when removing the back block is either a pound coin or an old 95/98 piston seal. BTW, like yourself, I found my first 98, although shooting oh so so smoothly was rather 'HOT'. I went down the route of short stroking it and It's producing 11.4 fpe and a sweet as can be. I have 2 other 98's, in different states of tune, both sub 12 fpe, and not short stroked, one with a SFS spring & guide with a red Aussie seal, and one with a full V mach glided piston with matching spring and guide. All 3 shoot beautifully, and all 3 feel slightly different but definite 'keepers.' Keep up the great work, and keep the non PC Banter up.

      Hello, thank you much appreciated.
That's interesting that yours was over too, I wonder how many more there are.
I think I'm going to glue an old seal to a larger washer, a bit more stability while also protecting the end of the block from scratches.
I did talk with Arc about Vmach kits, hopefully I can get one in future and put the kit from this rifle into my 95.
Do you have a favourite out of your 98s, i.e. a kit you found shoots best?
      Many thanks

@@nickvending9688 Hi Nick - the one I use the most, has a SFS spring and Guide with the red Aussie seal - the others are excellent, however that one has the edge on accuracy - the others don't group quite as well at 50m. Its probably the barrel, as it's a very early 98 and I found that the early 95's (barrel weighted version) and 98's have some of the best. I have a particularity good barrel from an early 95, which was used in the build of a reduced cylinder '80 by Steve Pope (RIP) - that combination is exceptionally accurate.
The Glided Piston Kit that ARC are producing - Based on the VMach design and manufacturer - are excellent and I have one in a 95

I to have experience factory guns going over the limit, and have purchased second hand rifles that when checked were producing well over the limit. I once came across a HW 80 that had been beautifully tuned It shot like silk and I would have bet my bottom dollar it was within the limit when checked the thing was producing 23 ftp, just goes to show you can't trust your ears. Anyway did not want to come across as captain obvious, but could I suggest a different approach, Replace piston seal collapse last coil or two job done. A lot of people complain about the legal power limit in the UK but as you say certainly in spring guns that power limit is actually at the right spot for performance. Same as you I'd rather hit the target every time than have a super powerful gun that I don't enjoy shooting.
A lot of FT shooters in the UK will say that 10.5 is the sweet spot.
Glad you enjoyed the video, greetings from the West Midlands of the UK.

I had to leave out the short stroker in my 98, well under powered. With no short stroker and no washers gave me 10.6 with H+N FTT, perfect for a .177. I spent hours deburring mine before putting it back together as they are really rough with sharp edges, I used a Brit Seal as the original had cuts in it, from HW not me.
BTW, when I first bought it, it was doing 11.95 av, too close for comfort.
FWIW, I accidentally left the 98 cocked with TBT spring for 2 weeks, no difference at all.

      @nickvending9688  2 місяці тому +1

Hello, thank you for your comment much appreciated.
Yes, the spring is apparently the full power one. The short stroke reduces cylinder swept volume so the power is reduced accordingly, rather dramatically it seems.
The chrono results are mentioned in the video, I had to add all the power washers and still only got under 11ftlb. That may increase as it beds in.

@nickvending9688 hi nick, I'm no expert, but it seems a little counterintuitive to put a short stroke in it and then a full power spring ? Then all the power washers? @peterconnor4193 the full power spring plus power washers have to go in to bring the power back up.

I would assume this would be a better shot cycle, I really feel your frustration, I recently ordered a 12fpe kit here in the states for a diana 34 unfortunately they sent me a 16fpe kit so I've had to take it apart twice cut coils reassemble ect because they sent the wrong kit , it's still at 14fpe but that's another story, thanks for the video il definitely give that kit combo a miss

If you want a really good kit and don't mind spending a bit have a chat with Arc Tuning.

I get what you are saying and they do look awesome, but if I moved to the US I'd be looking at Garands, M14s, M92s and other great kit that we aren't allowed on the boring side of the pond.

You've got a firearm and just told everyone on the internet. As it is now a firearm. You aren't allowed to work on it. Try practicing what you preach 😮

Actually I believe I demonstrated what every responsible airgun owner should do, which is keep an eye on your airguns lest they stray over the limit and resolve accordingly. If airgun owners can't test and/or fix it themselves then they should take it to someone that can.
My point was that it isn't cool or funny to tune your airguns up over the limit.
But anyway, thank you for watching and thank you for commenting.

@@nickvending9688 Actually what you have demonstrated is your complete and utter lack of respect for the law. You have very clearly admitted that you are the owner of a firearm and shot it. There is no leniency for ignorance. You are lecturing people on the legality of air weapons in the UK while working on a firearm. It's against the law to handle a firearm without a licence. Don't take my word for it, ring firearms and ask them if you feel so confident enough.
