If you are gonna watch touhou, watch "touhou: a summer day's dream" which is another fan anime that has 4.5 episodes as of now, and quality that is high end studio quality and it follows a story and introduces you to touhou characters and their stories. So it's best to watch it first before getting into memories of phantasm.

Besides this one (which is fandubbed independently from the production of the animation), there's also Touhou Summer Day Dream and Hifuu Katsudou Kiroku: The Sealed Esoteric History which both have A list voice actors.

Managing to make a full fledged anime that actually looks like something out of a studio just shows the strength and passion for the franchise in the Touhou doujinshi circle

The measure of rabbit holes is not popularity, it's how deep things go, and the Touhou pit is truly bottomless. If it exists there is a Touhou version of it, if it doesn't exist there may be a Touhou version of it anyways. Meanwhile TYPE/MOON has a bottom if you look hard enough.
Touhou Memories of Phantasma it's a Fan project anime, I didn't believe it at first, but after doing a little research and seeing why it took a while for the chapters to be released.

A Touhou official anime means the studio has to go through every single game (or just Windows era) and printworks. The Sangetsusei could be a mini-series which is then connected to Touhou 12.8.
All the openings and endings (there's one ending per episode, so 18 of them, and all of the are GREAT) are made for the anime, they are versions of the in-game songs (as all Touhou music is) made mainly by a doujin circle (group of fans) called Yuuhei Satellite, the singer of the 4 openings is senya which is part of this circle as well.
Imho the anime itself is probably way better in terms of animation that most anime nowadays, I don't know who the staff exactly is but I assure you is what you said in the video, they are probably actual animators which work on this project on their free time. It started in 2011 but it's actually still on-going, they release 1 episode per year on average nowadays.
As per what you mention in the end of the video, it's not 18 separate OVAs, they follow the story of the games and are divided in different arcs just as an actual anime and it has continuity as you expect.
It's actually a quite good starting point for the franchise (if not the best), but just let me warn you that the story and setting of Touhou can be quite confusing, at least to a westener like me. It's deeply rooted in Japanese folklore, Shinto religion and Youkais. However I'd still strongly recommend it and would be down to watch it again if you ever react to it.
I think the intros are probably some of the best Touhou theme remixes I've ever heard.

The downside ot anime is that it takes some liberties, ranging from good liberties like getting around game mechanics that only make sense in context of game environment, to recontextualizing older games in light of new lore, all the way to things that don't really make sense (most notably the episode order covers the games in a really weird order, if I remember right the Moriya gang is around when they shouldn't be, especially since they actually shouldn't be for reasons other than "they didn't exist yet").

From what I know, Memory of Phantasm released it first episode in 2010 and only just a few months ago did they release their 18th and final episode, they don't plan on making any more episodes but they might change their mind at any time depending if they can fund the animation or not.
Also the voice acting is fanmade, the episodes are released without any voice actors and fans use their talent to voice the character!
Let me just file this under “anime projects I'd personally fund if I ever won the lottery” slot it right next to “A proper negima adaptation”.
OVA stands for Original Video Animation and basically just means that the episode didn't air on TV. In case of animes that do air on the TV, the blue ray release sometimes contains a bonus episode in the form of an OVA to incentivice people to buy it. But there are shows that are just like a normal show but is labled an OVA simply because it didn't air. I haven't watched this show so I don't know if the episodes are standalone or not but considering that there are 4 openings for 18 episodes I would assume that at least the episodes with the same opening are connected.

The fandom is strong enough to run anime series better than some studios do. With so many talented artists and endless themes to draw from, Touhou can never run out of steam.
Granted, they don't have time constraints. And it's a passion project.
The fandom as a whole yes. The studios making anime, however, has run out of steam. It's not easy making anime, it costs a lot too. One of them has officially gone "bankrupt"

To address Luke's disbelief at the capabilities of the Touhou fan community:
Take everything you know about the vTuber fan community (all of the fanart, the animations, the music remixes, the fanfiction), realize the dial is only at about 5, crank that shit to 11, and you've got the Touhou fan community.
Much of the modern day vTuber fan community has roots in the Touhou fan community. Hololive MYTH's "Smol" avatars (e.g. Smol Ame, Smol Ina, etc.) are based on art from a prominent Touhou fanartist named Walfie. Shigure Ui's hit new original song features IOSYS from the Touhou remix days ("Marissa Stole the Precious Thing", "Overdrive", etc.)
There's even some Touhou Fan-Fiction Writers got their Original works get anime adaptations.
Realizing the vTuber fan community is just a cranked down version of the Touhou community is an very excelent way to describe the Touhou community lmao. Thanks.

Not to mention, many of the talents have mentioned to have a long relationship with the series, Marine and Fubuki in particular are known for being friends with BeatMario and having talked on stream with Touhou's creator ZUN.
Pomu is also a well known fan who got BeatMario as well in one of her streams, her face at the time was priceless since it was a surprise Lazulight and staff prepared for her.
A little late but to add to it, we have all of Calli’s debut music done by Tamaonsen another prominent group in the Touhou community and even Azki was a singer from one of the music circles involved in the Touhou community. It really runs deep
OVA is just original video animation released without being televised and such .. it doesn't mean they aren't linked or not . . and as for fan animation and such . . .there are many talented people out there that prefer the indie scene over professional studios to create labors of love than to be told what to create and just doing the normal work. Also from my understanding in Japan these circles created for fan indie groups can be a gateway into the industry

For more Touhou Recommendations, I'll still say minusT's "Touhou 3D" series. It's basically "What if Touhou, but 3D?" kind of thing. There's no dialogue even when it looks like the characters are talking to each other, but it's a great representation of the series. It takes several key moments in the series and animates them wonderfully and, even without dialogue, characterizes the characters very well. The first one is Reimu vs Remilia.

You commented on how the world of Touhou seems beautiful, and that's one of the big reasons why I love the series. For context, the Touhou series takes place in a world called Gensokyo, a land that has been separated from our own world to preserve the existence of everything that we consider myth, fantasy, or legend in our modern society. That includes, but is not limited to, fairies, ghosts, youkai, vampires, gods, magicians, immortals, est. Everything, from the locations to the beings living there, is wondrous.
Now combine that, the numerous characters, the outstanding BGM, and the series' creator openness about copyright, and you have a recipe for fans to go absolutely wild with their own creations. And BOY, have we created a lot. This fan anime being one of the big ones.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your continued dive into Touhou. There is plenty more to explore.

The anime was created by a circle called Manpukujinjya. The songs were done by the circle Yuuhei Satellite and the vocalist who sang the song is a woman named Senya. There are actually more Touhou animes out there but Memories of Phantasm seems to be by far the most well known one. Touhou is indeed one of the best fandoms that has ever existed because it has thousands of songs created by fans, thousands of doujinshis (fanmanga), hundreds of fangames and hundred of thousands of fanarts.

If you thought Hololive fanmade projects were big, Touhou is just in its own world. Theres hundreds of fanmades games, thousands of music projects, and many more things.
But on a side note, to be fair Fanmade is a very easy term for Touhou though. As the creator (one) ZUN Works on the main games alone. So pretty much anything not made by him is just fanmade. That includes professional companies and such.
Edit: That's not to say that there are extremely Talented individuals that work on these kind of things. Look at people like Alice Magic, or Mazu, Their animations are solo made as well, but sure as hell don't look like it. Or even Kay Yu, someone who does animation professionally, but does side projects as a fan.

There are thousands upon thousands of fan made songs, games, animations, and stories made by an extremely passionate fandom. It can't be overstated just how huge Touhou is. The original games have all been created by a single man, ZUN, and his vision has sparked the creativity of millions. I look forward to where your touhou journey takes you next lol
Glad you could finally react to this! All four songs were sung by vocalist Senya and performed by Yuuhei Satellite. You can see the level of love and passion that went into these projects and the quality shows in their work. My next recommendation would be Cirno's Perfect Maths Class.

Quite frankly, all of them are absolutely stunning and amazing, so much so that I'm not exaggerating when I say they look like they're done by a professional studio. But all the animations are done by just one guy.

Iirc, it's ending... 11, I believe? I'm afraid I don't have a way to 100% confirm it, but the voice is dead-on. I'm also not sure how much detail is appropriate to provide since she's singing under presumably her real name instead of the Senya pseudonym. But yeah. Senya's voice is beautiful to listen to.
Yeah, it's ending 11, Glitter. As for a way to be 100% sure, the myanimelist page of Mayumi Morinaga mentions that she goes by senya when doing stuff as part of Yuuhei Satellite.
And once again i've underestimated the sheer size of the touhou community.
the point to how is well organized fandom has unlimited manpower and unlimited resources and unlimited timeframe, so they made 19 15-20 minutes episodes over 12 years
anime you watch had always been limited by time, and finances and schedule so it must have some kind of format and air regularly but for the most part it is much longer and made in shorter timeframe while fans can polish project swap places and the only thing they care about is end effect
Manpuku Jinja, the doujin circle that created this anime, is not just a bunch of hobby animators. Lunamoon, the anime's character designer and animation director, actually is an anime veteran who worked on key animation for absolute classics like Fullmetal Alchemist (the original series), Eureka Seven, Gundam 00 and A Certain Scientific Railgun, and even as animation director on GOSICK. Fantasy Kaleidoscope basically was a bunch of animators coming together to create a doujin anime instead of further pursuing their professional careers. Even though ZUN allows monetization of Touhou fanworks to an extend, the anime could only be sold at special doujin conventions or stores associated with doujin culture. Manpuku Jinja staff had mentioned time and time again that they'd only continue while sales aren't too bad and unfortunately, they'd been in the red for years. The series finally came to a close earlier this year after more than 12 years, successfully having adapted Touhou 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 to an anime format.
Something else of note: This anime does not have an official dub, any dub you'll find online is a fan dub completely unrelated to Manpuku Jinja. Even though this is an OVA series, Manpuku Jinja releases past episodes on their official youtube channel after a while. The drawback is that they're only in 360p as incentive to buy the HD quality OVAs. This allowed fan dubbers to add voices to the videos without copyright issues but it also means that fan dubbed versions are based on the 360p videos. In case you're curious, Yuuhei Satellite, the circle who did the opening songs, has full versions of the songs on their channel with the opening animations followed by HD footage from the anime as makeshift music video.

Funny that you mention while on the 3rd song, that you said the Touhou World, aka Gensokyo is beautiful, the song really reflects it a lot. The song name is Kachou Fuugetsu , The phrase 花鳥風月 (Lit. Flower, Birds, Wind and the Moon) is an four-character Japanese idiom meaning "Beauties of Nature"". It perfectly show the song trough the video.

I think 華鳥風月 means The beauty of nature, but 華 means beautiful flowers, 鳥 means birds, 風 means wind, and 月 means the moon
so I think 華鳥風月 cannot be expressed only with the beauty of nature

There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. I made playlists on my channel, so you don't need to search, cause in those compilations are a few off and not in the correct order. Thanks for checking out!

This is probably one of my favourite reactions lol. I have been waiting for this for a while now and it was well worth the wait. Unless it’s taken down (which I don’t think it is) you can actually find the entire series on UA-cam, someone made a playlist of it. But the songs are amazing and the anime itself was pretty good. Has been a long time since I watched it so I can’t remember much but this is making me want to rewatch it again. Thanks for the funny and great reaction video!
TOUHOU is one of the most fan-created games you can imagine.
Because TOUHOU's fan creations can maintain variety and quantity at the same time, this is difficult to achieve in other games.
Of course, the biggest reason is that ZUN allows these fan-created to make profits
Can you imagine how many people ZUN has fed?
Basically, each opening depicts the story of a game (sometimes several games) in the series, so, even though it isn't 1:1 and it doesn't explore all the trivia and lore, you are pretty much getting what the games offer narratively in anime form. You should definitely react to these, they are extremely well made in all metrics.
I just love how insanely *COOL* Memories of Phantasm makes Reimu look. The fight with Sakuya, with Utsuho, even just flying alongside Yukari over the bamboo forest. She really gives off the vibe of "Don't step out of line, or else."
No one is probably gonna see this but there's another touhou fanmade anime series named "A Summer's Daydream" that focuses more on the daily lives of the characters, based on the official manga

Yeah, I dipped my toes into Touhou and gazed into the abyss of the fan community like seeing glimpses of an eldritch, Lovecraftian horror in my peripheral vision, and that community is one of like 3 I've ever encountered that's at least as psychotic as the Sonic the Hedgehog fan community, if not more. Touhou, Undertale, and My Little Pony. I never got into MLP, but I was on the internet when it was at its peak, and remember that whether I wanted to know about it or not, its fanbase made sure I knew about it. Undertale's fan community is an infinite fractal image of fan made alternate universes and retellings, comics, character redesigns, fan games, animations, a huge amount of which have their OWN giant fanbases, it's kind of nuts if you do even a little cursory digging. Get past all the infighting and find the good parts of the community, and you'll find the Sonic fan base can do basically anything we put our minds to except agree with each other. You could play the entirety of at least 4 other Sonic games ON other Sonic games. There's a mod that essentially turns Sonic Generations into Sonic Unleashed for example.
I didn't get far into Touhou, my curiosity led into a short lived autistic hyperfixation on it for a few weeks, but even that cursory glance at this fan base made me feel like I was in a rowboat in the middle of the ocean with Cthulu just underneath, only glimpses of the unimaginable thing just below me.

I can remember when the first episode came out. If you're struggling to think this is fan-made, think about how we felt back then haha.
I remember the first episode came out with no voices, the characters mouths moved but there was no vocal work. VERY quickly a dubbed version was made (JP dub) and those then carried on to dub each future episode. Been so long, I knew some more had come out but had no idea it was at 18 now. Think I only saw the first 2 or 3.
If you want more Touhou anime to look into, there's the Kinema Kan collection. Whole bunch of stuff under that name with some amazing music (some even better than these IMO). Luckily someone has a playlist here on youtube with all of them included

For some more quality fan animations, you can check out minusT's stuff. Unlike these where they're done by a group of fans, minusT is a solo creator who works with blender. However, those videos have so many references in them for fans that I'm not sure what the experience for someone new to Touhou would be. Since you liked the girl with the horn you could start with "Subterranean Stars"
Recommending again March Comes in Like a Lion. It's a show that has it all. Great openings and endings, awesome OST, incredible voice acting, including one of Kana Hanazawa's best performances in a long career of amazing performances, interesting and unique visuals, and incredibly believable and realistic character writing. It's one of those rare shows that comes along every few years that reminds you of why you started watching anime in the first place.

The songs for the openings are remixes with vocals of some of the ost for the game
The openings definitely look good, but once you actually watch the OVAs the fact that they're fan-made starts to show. Don't get me wrong they still look great, but they take a lot of subtle shortcuts to reduce the amount they have to animate. Things like slow pans over still images or dialogue, keeping fights mostly off-screen, even the occasional reuse of footage where they can get away with it. A lot of the action shots used in the full episodes are reused in the openings. Once you know what to look for, it's pretty obvious that they're fan made. That said, they're still incredible for what they are.
Also, in terms of continuity between episodes, it's actually kind of spotty. Some episodes (1, 7, and 18) are standalone, while others (2-4, 5-6, 8-13, and 14-17) tell continuous stories. Each "arc" covers the events of a game, though they do so out of order.
One has to remember that according to some calculations there might be upwards of 100 000 music arrangements of Touhou. And there is not one Touhou anime but at least 3 that I know of.

Im sure someone has said it, or probably not, but Touhou Project is MASSIVE on Japan and rather Asia, it has one if not the biggest library of fan-made content due to ZUN simple but precise guidelines that allow for so much freedom, and the reach the series it has is enormous, to put some context, Memories of Phantasm in itself is a music only animated series, then it came for more fans to straight up go and voice over it as the series had the subtitles and so on, and thats how it goes with a lot of things, there are also other fan animations of also such a high level, and in some, it even has real well known voice actors working on them, by whats basically almost free out of pure love to the franchise, an example, being Hifuu Club Activity Record, which has talents like Hanazawa Kana, Eri kitamura and sooo many other high profile VAs just doing it cus they want to

To make it more believable: The release schedule for this is not frequent at all (at least several month waits between each part and been going on for years). If you think about it, if you have the time, tools, and passion you can do about anything. Also Touhou's main series, which is free to play, has the unique trait of a franchise where copyright doesn't get in the way of fan projects. There are a ton of extremely impressive spin off fan games too.
This anime's biggest plus is that it is extremely impressive for a fan project. The potential downside to this one I'd argue is that I think it depends on knowing some of the lore in advance to understand the plot. It's basically giving anime scenes to the main lore.

Touhou is one of the biggest things that exists in the internet. Most things you've seen, memes and whatnot are almost certainly based on Touhou or referenced it in one way or another. Touhou is really in EVERYTHING.
The touhou fandom is old, deep and extremely dedicated.
It is the source of A LOT of current day internet trends, fandoms, music, memes, crazes, etc.
As for dedication, look at the games.
Regardless of what is it that draws you into playing them (for me it was the music), the games basically train fans to be dedicated, focused and keep at something to get a desired effect.
There's a reason why touhou DOMINATES, online fan art tags, music remixes, fan comics, etc.
Memories of Phantasm as a project started in 2011 and it's still on going to this day. If there's one thing you should eventually learn on the internet, is to never underestimate the Touhou fandom. There's no fandom on earth more passionate than Touhou fandom.
Term "OVA" does not refer to what the context of the episode are, but to HOW are they distributed.
Normal anime episodes are usually aired on TV, while special episodes for those series are included in the Blue-ray releases thus being called OVA (Original Videa Animation), because they didn't air on TV, you had to buy the Blue-ray to watch it.
There are some popular titles released that way like "Legend of Galactic Heroes" or "Hellsing Ultimate" that you've watched

This anime or OVA (original video animation) was made as a passion project for the series. However the original version of this anime had no voice acting only subtitles, however there is the fan project that gives it voice acting.
Memories of Phantasm basically retell the stories from the games.
For example, episode 2-4 is from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, episode 8-11 is from Imperishable Night, and episode 14-17 is from Mountain of Faith. Though they feel quite cohesive, so while it's possible to watch certain episodes solely for the arc (like I originally only watched ep 8-11 because Reisen is there), watching the series as the whole would give you better grasp of Touhou universe

OVAs are series/films that are specially released on home video without being aired on TV or Theater. Hellsing ultimate is also an OVA
No matter what order or path you start watching Touhou content, every single thing I've seen whether it's fanmade or not is truly amazing.

If I recall, the songs were arranged utilizing Melodie’s from some of the original soundtrack. Said original soundtrack is quite amazing itself. I also remember loving the fanime itself. I’m glad someone recommended these finally. Also, since you asked, they should all be on UA-cam still. That’s there I watched them all way back. I wish there was more honestly.
I just recently found out about this anime myself, and what's amazing about it to me is that even though I'm not a fan of touhou and I've been getting more and more tired of anime in general (my adhd brain can't stand watching them most of the time for some reason, even though I still get hyped when a manga I like a lot gets an anime adaptation) I've very much enjoyed watching this one, maybe because the story-telling format is so unique here, it doesn't make me tense or impatient.

Try typing the first verse of each opening, plus “extended” on the UA-cam search bar, and you will likely find the A.M.V.s with the full-length openings and clips from Memories of Phantasm. The folks who upload them also got vocals-off versions. And a lot of arrangements for several of the original soundtracks from the Touhou videogames, too.

These 3 were done by 3 different circles. With Memories of Phantasm currently already finished airing and the other two still on going.
In terms of Touhou animations, the big ones are Fantasy Kaleidoscope, Hifuu Club Activity Record, and Summer Day's Dream. I'll also throw in the Flash animation for Highly Responsive to Prayers, since I happen to find that one interesting.
I would say that the best self contained stories are Episode 2 of Hifuu Club Activity Record and all of Summer Day's Dream. Summer Day's Dream has rather sus animation in Episode 1, but the quality greatly improves with each installment.
Touhou project is a series of bullet hell games, light novels, music etc that are all in part made by the one man team, Team Shanghai Alice. These openings are all fully fan animated to fan arrangements of official music tracks by ZUN (team shanghai alice).
And you still haven't seen that this is NOT the only fan-made anime project. There is also A Summer Day's Dream, Hifuu Activity Club Record and the myriad of animated music videos by circles such as SOUND HOLIC, Shoujo Fractal, Kyoto Fantasy Troupe (this one made Hifuu Activity Club Record but has also made more stuff like an opening for the 9th game, Phantasmagoria of Flower View) or Kinema Kan.

Opening 3 is longer because it sorta double as a recap. Can't remember if that was at a time the project took a long break or something, but there's another reason.
Each of the games pictured are a only few OVA long, some only 1-2 episode even. You could say you can watch each arc independently, so it still qualifies as OVAs.
It's cut in more part because of the limitations of being a fan-project. Each of them took ages to make and released as little bits were completed. Often there would even be even shorter versions without voice acting, if not animatics in early state.
That was quite the hype back in the days when you'd find just one new scene here and there as preview, it's like telling everything going fine and the project is still alive.
