Watching your videos really shows why you need different units, other channels just have one or two and not the same experience, thank you for sharing your knowledge man!
How you doing MixbusTv, You helped me to choose my SPL Eq Mastering, A couple of months ago. I really need your advice between Mastering compressor shadow Hills vs SPL Iron.. If you have to choose only between those two, Which one would you prefer, based on your experience?
The SH is an overpriced SSL compressor, don't waste your money. The Iron is an amazing compressor but it has a very very long learning curve and it's on the soft side. Personally if you had to only have one I'd get the Wes NG or the Alpha compressor.
@@mixbustv yeah was thinking of using it as a tracking / overall EQ rather than surgical. Leave that to ITB. Managed to find two AwTac channel amps which are on their way now. Very excited.
Have you looked at recalibrating the high end response on the HG2? You should be able to get it close to -1dB @12K, it looks like yours is rolling off a little too much. I've got mine calibrated to the least roll off I could, and lowered how big the air boost is so it's a little tamer.
The box is brand new so no I haven't. But I'm friend with Eric so I'm gonna ask him. Also my air bost if barely noticeable. Maybe you have an older version?
@@mixbustvMine's the previous rev, but I can't imagine it's that different. And it doesn't look like the calibration guide has been updated. It had a huge air boost out of the box, but was a 5min job to trim down so it just brings up the sparkle. But if you know Eric, definitely ask him :-)
@@mixbustv yes i would say such a rolloff from 5k on something designed for a 2bus, has got to be off. And it's no surprise you are not hearing much of an air boost because it begins in a deficit from that rolloff.
Impressive, thanks for sharing this information with us. Will this be possible with SPL Passeq also? I've the Passeq Plugin from Plugin Alliance but I haven't used it a lot because it's a little bit confusing to me to work with. Thanks a lot!
Hey David, what are your thoughts on PSP MasterQ2? I just got into PSP w/ their Reverb and I'm very impressed thus far. After reading their site, I'm currently researching and highly interested in getting their other plugins. They look like the real deal
again wondering whats the sample rate used because 44.1 / 48 khz will react a lot differently & even if the analog is unlimited sample rate… when being recorded back into the daw it is still being recorded at whatever sample rate the interface is set at, final mixdowns at 44.1/48khz but if you want the most out of your plugins / hardware higher sample rates seem to help out especially with headroom for those steep cutoff filters that happen during the ad conversion.. love your setup though and cool testing and geeking around with the hardware 🤘🏽
Actually higher sample rates can potentially cause problems and the benefits are still debatable.Tokyo Dawn Labs blog has a very well done write up on it. This is why they made this www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-ultrasonic/
May I ask if that high pass is something you did? Or is that because that is where the HG-2 starts to take effect? Sorry, not familiar with plugin doctor, but now I’m interested in it.
This would be low pass, not high pass and it's even an HP, it's just a roll off of 1db at 10K down to 2 at 20K and it's what the HG-2 does when engaged (but you can adjust it with internal trims which is what I'll do because this is way too much for me to be used on mix or master)
How's it going David! Just wondering how different the high end of a song would sound going through the Blackbox and SSL (straightening the curve) compared to having them bypassed with no roll off. Is there more umph and sizzle? Thanks :)
I have a candid test of me playing with the HG2 coming up on monday that will answer many of the questions people have about it. But in short, there's "more" of everything with the HG2, of course depends on the settings and level. It's a crazy unit. I trimmed the roll off tho', this was a bit too much and you can adjust it with trims inside the box

Your studio is insane
I'd love to see how the Kush Clariphonic does in this test with it's ultra high frequency boosting capabilities
It's a parallel equalizer, it's a different thing, it wouldn't be the tool for this (also not a fan of it)
Amazing. I love these kind of scientific videos. It's simply the truth even if our ears sometime can not hear it.
I really going to appreciate your help, musical greetings from Miami💥
That's a big roll off from the HG-2, is that how the unit works? Knowing your style, would you still use it for mastering?
Happy easter to you and Bella
Thank you, you too!
I like the camera position
So cool!

I'm not sure what "this" would be. The PassEq is nothing like the PQ (other than the fact that is a plugin) they are completelty different

They make great stuff but I've no experience with that in particular
sorry for asking the question twice. I didn't realize you already answered it. Thank you
If you want to "fix it" , you should maybe use digital linear phase eq, as every additional analog eq will introduce some phase shift..
If you have 2 analog EQs in series and you cancel the curve of the first with the second you also cancel the phase shift.
You should study linear phase eqs before saying that

No you don't have it because there's no plugin for this. You have the PassEQ which is completely different from my SPL

@@mixbustv Nice one Thx!
Can I borrow yours for a couple days? :D
Are you just putting the dr plug-in in an analog return on your daw and running pink noise to test these? Thanks
Dr is not a plug-in
What is that movement of the eq line? It's how analog works? like keeps changing all the time? cheers
yep
Now: does the spl plugin accomplish that task too? 🤔
What are the chances of a $200 plug-in be the same at a 7.5K hardware?
Does the plugin do the same?
I don't know, I don't care for the plug-in, most of their stuff suck
A $7,000 US dollar solution!! Nice...
You know what Paris Hilton says..
I had to google her sayings and I liked this one: "I've made all my money on my own without my family and I work very hard." @@mixbustv
what’s causing the default roll off and non linearities were seeing when the eqs are bypassed?
Dunno what it is but plugin doctor does that with plugins as well.
Did you watch the video? :D it's the HG-2.. that's what the video is about
does the plugin can get close to this?
Depends what you define as "close" 😄 Close as if you were to race a Shelby GT500 with a Civic R kind of close, then yes
