little tip, if you don't know the iDRAC IP address you can get the front panel to display basic information including this Dell gear really is great and I know this is late but definitely should have reset iDrac and the BIOS configuration to defaults to give you a clean slate
@@Franchyze923 yeah man, mainly vray, hopefully sim calculations for fluids and tyflow too, it's got 2x e5 2695v2, 96gb (soon to go up) and hopefully sticking an rtx a5000 in there then another later down the line. I dont know the pros and cons of using a virtual machine and was just going to install win 11 on it to make life simple as I already have a rack mount nas for my music project files, but after seeing what else can be done on a vm I'm probably going to run virtual, so another learning curve ahead of me, can't wait!
Great Vid. I am newbie. Can you please tell if I can connect a wireless mouse and keyboard or should it be wired ? secondly, Can I connect monitor with HDMI ? the Flash drive that you inserted inside had EXSI I guess. What was in the other USB external flash drive ? I have bought a renewed R720 for the first time and need some advice. Thanks
I've never tried connecting a wireless keyboard/mouse to the server. I'd recommended wired. No, the server does not have an HDMI port. The usb drive inside the server was empty, the external usb drive had the proxmox installer on it. I booted from the external usb drive (which ran the installer) then I chose the internal usb drive as my target device (where I wanted to install proxmox). Does that make sense?
Thanks! Yea that's correct only 2.5" slots. I shucked a portable external harddrive - www.costco.com/seagate-one-touch-5tb-portable-hard-drive-with-rescue-data-recovery-services.product.100761181.html So the 5TB harddrive is 2.5"
I am unable to install Proxmox. After installing I am unable to connect to the GUI or ping the IP of Proxmox. Should I do anything differently in the BIOS to make sure my harddrive RAID is configured properly ?
I notice on your intial boot you have all 192gb of ram installed is this with all slots filled? With my r710 I have all slots filled with 8gb sticks for a total of 144 but im ram speed gets reduced to 800mhz i see youre running I assume at full speed with your ram
No I don't have all RAM slots filled. In the video when I boot and you see 192GB, that is on my R720, not the R710. If you watch here ua-cam.com/video/hvfYJ34WZF0/v-deo.html the R720 is on the right and you can see only 12 slots are filled (some slots have fake plastic sticks in them). I have 12 16GB sticks of RAM. I'm not sure the top speed of the R710, it might be 800mhz so it's possible the R710 is lowering your RAM speed.
Did you had any blinking lights on your samsung ssd 870 Evo? I tried Kingston a400 480gb I got errors and blinking orange lights planing to switch to samsung 870 Evo.
So the ISO is on the outside usb drive, I assume you selected the internal usb as the boot drive. I have a 720XD trying to load up TrueNAS Scale. The iso boot usb is not finding my internal usb to save to. Did you have any similar issues? (The PERC is flashed to IT mode)
You're talking about the Firmware ISO right? Yes, that was on the outside front usb drive. When I wanted to update the firmware, I booted directly from that, so I selected the OUTSIDE usb drive. When you run the ISO firmware updater, you boot directly from it, you don't need to find your internal usb to save to. Does that help? I ran this firmware updater before I even had anything installed on the internal usb drive.
hmm, I'm definitely not an expert on this but pretty sure it depends on the RAID controller. If they are identical, I think you might be able to do this. Anyone else know?

Thank you so much.
If some Kind hearted helps with donating the same, we can pool funds and pay for shipping charges to India. We are in need of any server which can accommodate 4/5 VMs for Admin/Networking practices. Thank you so much.
I would consider looking for a Dell R710. They fit your specifications and can be found pretty cheap these days. I think I got my R710 for around $150 a few years ago.
I just recently upgraded from an R710 to an R730 and even though I have 2x the cores and 2x the RAM, it runs at about half the power consumption.
Nice! That's awesome. I'd like to snag a R730 at some point.
SAS HDD slot is sata hdd support on SAS slot
Thank you for the interesting video. I am fascinated that the Samsung ssd is probably same price of the server!

What is the difference in PowerDraw between the two
I am new which windows install in this servers 720
Good video, i was just thinking about grabbing a 720.
What's the largest single drive that can be installed?
This is a great video props to you, my friend!
Thank you!

I'm just entering the world of servers, r720 on its way tomorrow to be used as a render node to my main rig , exciting times ahead

I have not seen any sata slot in 720 where sir
you need to create virtual disk on system setup if i remember correctly press F2 on startup

How loud is the Dell PowerEdge R720 ? is it much quieter than the R710?
Yea it’s much quieter, can barely hear it. Sounds pretty much just like an ordinary computer.
I love that jump from 11g to 12g 🥰 had a R310 and it sounded like a fighter jet, but my R320 is easily running in my office the whole day

it definitely is in the video, but I'm fairly certain I have it. I might have taken it out earlier before filming.

what happened to your esxi then
