Making a Spooky Spider Box | In The Labs with Vectric | Vectric FREE CNC Projects

- Over the years Vectric and Design and Make have been adding to their library of Halloween themed CNC projects and CNC ready clipart, keeping users inspired through the “spookiest time of the year”. This year Todd thought it was about time to create a project that puts the “trick” back into “Trick or Treat”!
We are sure many of you out there have seen the spider trick box. You know the one, slide the top open looking for a treat and a spider jumps out and touches your hand… Eeek! Fun for most, scary for others so pick your victim carefully!
In the video Todd will show you how to use a few scraps of wood, the box creator gadget and a bit of nifty thinking to make everything work as it should. Not only will you need wood, but an old umbrella or coat-hanger for the wire, a dowel, some string… and don’t forget a plastic insect of your choice. This is an easy one, that is sure to keep the kids busy, and the adults on the edge of their seats!

Nice project Todd. I'll have to figure out where to find the wire and spiders if I decide to build. Looks like it would be fun.
Thanks Rob, I got the spiders from Amazon and the wire, like I mentioned, came from an old umbrealla, but I had originaly planned to use a coat hanger.

The gadget is only available for the pro versie. I have vcarve desktop. But that does not work
Hello and thanks for the comment. Yes you are correct the box gadget is only avaiable for the Cut2D Pro, VCarve Pro or Aspire. If you do have Desktop you can still use this file, you will just need to rearrange the sides of the box onto a material that has the longest dimention of 24" (that way you tooling will not be larger then the max for Desktop version of our software). Make sure that you source material that is pretty close to the thickness I used and be sure to use a 1/8" endmill for the profile cuts.
Do you use a compression bit for cutout? Mine 1/8th down cut is a bit rough but it may be the wood. Home Depot did not have berch only sandwood or something like that. I don't like the grain.

Thanks James!!! Nope I made this in hardwood. I would have liked to try it in plywood.
I should have ued hardwood but I had the 1/2 in ply I made a few errors. I used different thickness of wood for the lid so it was too thick. I tried to widdent he pockets but ... woops wrong side of the line with the table saw I will give it another shot. I am thinking about adding a bit of elastic to the wheel to pull the spider back into the box if it is setting on its end. Thanks for the freeby Vectric rocks!!@@vectric
