    Great videos. Is like to pass on my views about plastering Vs drywall. In 2015 I moved into a 4 bed detached house that needed gutting and renovated. As my skill level is an expert DIYer, I decided on drywall because I can do all trades except gas, bricklaying and plastering. I've done every room, using 96 sheets of plasterboard, with not a single bag of plaster! I get comments on how neat it all looks. There not a single crack anywhere throughout the house 4 years on. I admit taping and filling joints can be a bit dusty, but the finish is spot-on. I also got good at dot-and-dab! Another bonus is that I did the whole house single-handed. I got a board lifter on eBay for 150 quid, new, and flogged it for 70 quid when I finished. My greatest advantage was that, as I'm retired, I could devote the time needed to do a perfect job on everything, including electrics and plumbing. My house is now MINT 😁

    The art of doing it yourself is knowing when it best use the trade guys, plastering large areas and if want decent finish best left to those doing it every day, same as tricky carpet laying as that tricky skills unless doing it daily and if not done right will ruin end result .
    Your videos well thought out and edited, loved the pancakes mixed in :-) wish I had known would of been round with my maple syrup :-)
    Good start for new year as progress seems easier when start getting to this level in a build .
    Have fun ...

    I remember when dry-wall was supposed to be replacing 'Plasterers' in the early 70's as all the sites went MAD for it. Thankfully ALL the flaws in the concept started showing up pretty early on and Plasterers started earning the kind of money they can only 'dream of' these days :-)
    Still - a lot of the major builders use dry-wall because you can paint on it almost straight away, but their Snag-it lists are a mile long and usually don't get done - much to the disgust of MANY new-home-buyers these days ...... Long live the Plasterers :-)

    hello, i hope you can help me on how you was allowed to put in a floating wooden floor in your garage conversion....as i am told that on top of the 100mm insulation boards you should put another layer of dpc sheeting then a 100mm of dom3 concrete finished surface, so how or is it ok to use a normal household floor board system or was it just on your own decision that you could use this wooden finish

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 років тому

      There is an existing slab to start with whereas it sounds like you are talking about a new insulated slab from ground up. We had three options, break up and dig out whole slab and do as you have described, lay insulation and pour a liquid screed over or floating timber floor. Of course the latter is easiest and cheapest however it all depends what is needed and what was there before.

    Plaster will always be used on home reno's as it is relatively simple on a small scale, however, drywall is being used more n more coz thick plaster has an unreliable dry time. I have been on jobs with sections of wall NOT dry after 10 days (with heaters and fans) and therefore a nightmare for resource planning etc... Drywall, plus jointing, plus sanding is a reliable formula with predictable results.

    • @benmjt
      @benmjt 5 років тому

      Plastering = Drywall (plasterboard) with 3mm of plaster. Nothing thick about it.

    5:43, Tim FYI we don't skim in Scotland unless the property predates the 1980's! From around 1985 give or take we've been taping and jointing all plasterboard, its cheaper and faster and means you don't have to wait for lots of drying out.

    Plastering walls is something that just doesn't happen much at all any more in my part of the world. You put up drywall, tape and mud it, and paint it. Are you doing this because of personal preference, or heritage building code, or for some other reason? it looks great but must cost...

      Reality is it’s about the same material cost and as he says. If people know what they are doing - less time. (All the sanding, etc takes a while to do right with tape and mud.)
      Only downside is the wait to paint of around a week, rather than next day on drywall... and it’s a LOT harder to DIY plastering

    • @gdfggggg

    • @isyt1
      @isyt1 5 років тому

      T M it’s probably 1 to 2 days work for the plastering so think what the day rate would be in your area. The actual plaster is very cheap. Due to age of the property, though, removing the wallpaper could take you ages because it probably has several layers and there’s probably woodchip wallpaper on one of those layers - both of which can be a ball ache to remove. Also a wallpaper steamer will have to be left on longer than usual because of that and so may cause parts of your existing plaster to fall off so take that in to consideration for the plastering.
