Made this video a few weeks ago before the lockdown precautions started here in Australia. Thought I’d share some of the techniques I use when doing long exposure shots in strong wind. They certainly were put to the test in places like Iceland and Scotland. Hope you’re all keeping safe and healthy.
drone camper thanks so much for watching really appreciate your kind comment 👍🙏

Thumbs up ere' Adrian, loved the start - very helpful for us beginners!!! Some handy hints. Many thanks for sharing the info and great demos - stay safe both of you :)
Cheers thanks so much Shaun. Really appreciate you watching. Thanks for sharing your videos from Spain. Please take care mate and look forward to your next video.👍🙏📸
This was fantastic Adrian! Loved the infusion of humor - especially that pole "dancing" shot in the beginning as well as the selfie checking your hair - lol. I've actually used a few of these techniques in Scotland and Iceland but I never considered getting on the downwind side of the car. Some really good ideas and techniques included in here. Thanks so much for putting this one out there. I needed the laugh for the day!
Cheers, thanks so much for watching. Haha! I paid for it the couple of days afterwards holding myself up on that pole. Back was so sore. Glad you got a laugh and found the info helpful. Have an awesome week and please stay safe. 👍🙏📸
Hey thanks so much for watching. I used my bag in Iceland to weigh my tripod down at a waterfall and it kinda worked. The bag still swayed in the wind though moving the tripod very slightly. Hope you're doing ok over on your part of Bris. Cheers and stay well. Oh! I meant to ask, did you delay your trip to Seoul?
@@adrianalfordphotography Yeh our flights to Seoul where canceled a month or so ago. We where actually suppose to be in Fraser Is right now but that got cancelled mid week. Could be worse though, we could all have covid-19 and that would not make us happy campers. Hope you're doing well Adrian #withus
These are great tips Adrian. I think we've all been in that tricky situation where we almost have to hold the tripod otherwise it falls over. I also use the velcro and it's a wonderful idea. Take care mate.
Nightscape Images thanks very much for watching Richard. I try my best to find cover so the wind is at my back and my body covers the camera too. Good ol velcro eh, so many uses 👍 look after yourself mate, cheers 🙏
Thanks so much Walter. Probably left out you can also use your body and get close to the camera to buffer from the wind. Did that a lot in Scotland. Stay safe my friend and glad you enjoyed the video 🙏👍📸
Nice job! Good tip on the velcro. Worth mentioning to people to remove camera strap. Some fools (like me) keep it on their camera. Finally, just standing between the wind and camera can have a very beneficial effect on camera shake. Loving your production quality.
JC Images: Behind the Shot thanks for watching Jay. Yeah I forgot using your body as a barrier, I showed a shot of me doing that after the opener holding my jacket up, but didn’t mention in the audio. Hope you’re doing ok over there 🙏
These tips are just fantastic, Adrian! What a random, I also did a sort of defense sports when I was a child :) I really love the connection you built with it and using a tripod. That's fantastic when it's possible to use other abilities, maybe from children years, in other areas of live, maybe photography. Well done ;)
Thanks Rob, yes I agree. Sometimes you think you've nailed the LE then when you're checking it out in PS, you see camera blur. Always appreciate your kind comments mate, cheers 👍🙏
Good tips Adrian 👍 I love the humour 😀 Using spikes like you suggested and keeping the tripod low I’ve taken long exposures of 4 minutes in gale force winds with great results. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe both of you. Cheers, Cliff
Cheers Cliff, thanks for watching mate. Harsh wind can be such a battle sometimes when I'm out. Had no choice at one stage to lay flat on my front on the Old Mann of Storr or I was going to get blown off the top. We've now moved to the same lockdown stages as you in the UK have, announced in Aus tonight. Stay well mate and take care.
The velcro tip was especially clever. I'll add...Fold the flip screen back into place after you compose, and somehow secure the camera strap so it isn't flopping in the wind.
Thanks so much for watching. Totally agree that humor does help with everything from healing, to teaching and more. I try to incorporate that in my vlogs as much as I can, because hey, if we can't laugh and enjoy life, then why are we here? I always appreciate your kind comments and support, please take care over there, cheers 👍🙏
I just fitted long spikes to my tripod to help with this. Not tested them yet due to nasty bugs out there. Staying home in Scotland drinking malt whisky and watching your videos of Scotland.
Thanks so much for watching Chris. Yes, those spikes will come in very handy. Wish I had them while standing in that river at Glencoe. Enjoy that whisky mate and please stay safe, cheers 🙏

I’ve thought about this conundrum and all I came up with is leaning my bag on the tripod. Thanks this very helpful video Adrian 👌👍

Great tips there Adrian, it's one of the most frustrating things when you've done a long exposure and its soft. Cheers, 👍📸
