I believe this is the best way to set your camera up when shooting long exposures. Do you set yours up differently? I'd be very interested to hear how.
Cheers
Gary
Erm... its a miss and go first few times. Set iso 64, aperture f8 ish, focus middlish some place, manual mode and hope for the best. Im going yo save your video and play it twice and put a note in the iphone exact order. I have 70 percent perfected myself so far. Excellent video. Thanks going to subscribe to your channel.
Thanks Gary, I usually just wing it on shutter speed but lately have been using the live view/light meter and it seems so far I’m doing it right.
Hi Gary.... Greetings from Bali....., thank you so much for your respond, very appreciated ... I will do and follow exactly your Tutorial here..., and the plan is this week end.. go to the quite beach (*___*).
Never stop to learn about Longexp.., what I think also the point in here is the Filter ND it's self who can make the Longexp Landscape result is "Amazing Picture".
I'm not use Haida Filter... just using ND10 mid quality filter... (no doubted for Haida). I'm sure that I still can get the better Longexp quality photos too....
Yes there is no image stabilisation switch on the lenses so I have to go into camera menus to find it , which is a real faff and pain . I know to get a good quality image it needs to be switched off but I was wonder if with built in it was so detrimental
Pretty much the only difference I have is as I use back button focus I don't need to switch the lens to manual. Additionally I've found my camera will happily expose (down to 30s) with a 10 stop filter so I can take the photo in aperture priority mode which makes me a little quicker. Anything over 30s I too need an app etc.
What are your thoughts re mirror lock up? Have you found it necessary?
This is how people with learning difficutys like me actually learn, great stuff here mate you deserve a trophy for this well done. I wish everything in life was thought like this. Its the way to do it.
Very well explained well done and thank you
I shot the old pier at Weston Super Mare at sunset yesterday. Had to use f22 but managed 8 seconds. Came out quite well, but I can see the benefit of NDFs. Next time. Great video, BTW.
One of the easiest and best instructional videos on Long Exposure! Only thing I don't understand is, why your channel doesn't have over 100-k subscribers yet! I challenge all of Gary's subscribers to invite one person to join. That would push this channel over the 100-k mark! This channel deserves it! Thanks Gary from one of your followers in the USA!
I've been taking pictures for years, but this tutorial has taken my understanding on a significant step. Your advice is very easy to grasp and replicate. You're a good teacher. Thanks.
Cheers Jon 👍👍
Love the way you do your tutorials
To the point no BS and no frigging fancy words to confuse people to go learn an unnecessary word that we can do without with all the friggng complication we have to deal with as it is
Thank you
Now I have more time to shoot instead of looking in the dictionary
lol thank you Anthony :)
It is my introduction to long exposure photography and this video has made it so simple, can’t wait to get my filter.
The best long exposure tutorial I've seen on youtube, watched it several times now! Thanks Gary!
Very kind Matt, cheers
That’s over simplified. So practical with live demo on the LCD. As if you are teaching by the side of the student. Never seen like this so clear absolutely with no confusion. I shall try this today. I didn’t listen further to the 2 bd half of the video. Thanks Gary. 👍
All your tutorials are top quality Gary. Thank you 👍
Gary. I’m just starting out at trying long exposure photography. This video was so useful for a beginner like myself. Great instructional video, I’ve made my notes now I’m ready to get started. Much appreciate for your expertise advice. JohnC
Very nice most of my long exposure are 35mm film at night and my lense is open for hrs. Shooting that way since the late 70s.
Just this week I purchased my first digital camera that is not a pocket point and shoot.
I found your teaching very accurate without extra fluff.
So thank you for that.
This weekend I plan on going to lassen volcanic national park and applying you're teachings with my new toy a sony slt a77ll.
Your short class is expertly executed. I picked up enough to improve on it.
Thanks for sharing.
Keep shooting.
Keep sharing.
Thanks mate. I like simplicity and you explained it well. I’m just about to take a few shots of a river rippling over rocks at the foothills of the Australian Alps with a 10 stop filter on a Nikon D200 and D500. The lens is an old 35-70mm F/2.8 push pull from the 1980’s/90’s. Can’t wait to see the results. Hoping the rain doesn’t come early.😊
Cool. My next video is a photography hack for using 10-stop filters. It's out on Sunday.
@@GaryGough looking forward to it
Excellent Sir......Excellent......You just blown out all those complicated calculations for using ND filters.....Thank you very much for your tutorial......Im gonna try it very soon and would like to send you the results....
Great video! I’ve been trying to learn more about ND filters and most explanations are so confusing. Your video clearly outlines the necessary steps without over complicating the process. Thank you!
Very informative video. It was very easy to understand what you were talking about because you use very simple language. Thank you. Will go out and experiment and check the results.
Cheers Vijay 👍👍
The check list is amazing Gary. I noted the points what you said and made a checklist and took to the sea side and took a beautiful smooth water on long exposure to 5 seconds. Amazing. Thank you. 🙏🏽
You're welcome, cheers 👍👍
Gary, Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us all. I was failing miserable at long exposure work until I discovered your channel. I went up to Marys Shell just the other day in order to put what you have taught me into practice, I'm so pleased with the outcome. Surly we should be paying for these brilliant tutorials of yours? Hey, Just seen your midnight long exposure work of todays date!
Brilliant! OK, so, should I ever bump into you and your good lady, then, well, a well deserved 3 course meal on me as a thank you.
Keep up the good work. Much appreciated. Kind Regards
Gary have watched many tutorials on long exposures but gave up.
How simple you made this I will be forever grateful can’t wait to get out to practice.
Regards
Harry
Very welcome. Thank you
This is what I call a very very clear way to explaine it cristal clear. Many thanks Gary, I'm gonna try this 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Elmar
That's what we all want to see ...An easy to follow ABC 123 Video on how to take long exposure shots.. I have been doing this for a while but with your helpful video I can take even better shots especially of the sea and water falls to get that great look. Thanks Gary
Glad it was helpful!
Another great helpful video, my son is wanting to do long exposure photography so I have forwarded it to him.
Thanks John 👍👍
At last, a video that explains NDs in a clear manner, thanks Gary.
Some good advice. I don't have a graduated ND filter so I shoot a 5 shot 1 stop bracket series and blend in post processing. It is a little more work, but achieves quite good results.
Your tutorials are the best! You speak in general terms which can easily be understood. Much appreciated!
I learned more from this that all the other videos I’ve watched in the last few months
Glad it helped Sarah 👍👍
Absolutely brilliant Gary I’m looking forward to seeing more seascapes you explain in simple terms that’s what I need thanks very much
Regards Patsy Ireland
Best explanation of setting your camera when using neutral density filters that I’ve seen. Thank you and I’ve now subscribed
Very kind, thank you
good basic instructions easy to listen to and excellent to hear you have someone who knows where you are!
Cheers David 👍
Hi am new this month to photography, just got myself a cannon camera and been practicing, watched alot of youtube videos now and realised long exposure is definitely for me. Would like to say thank you have explained it so well 👍😊
GG the best UA-cam photography channel imo. Thanks again Gary for sharing your knowledge.
Having purchased a Lee 6 stop filter and a few ND Grads I was totally confused, it put me off using them but after watching this guide I'm going out tomorrow to experiment...Thanks for breaking it down into laymans terms!
Thank you so much! I'm going to Newfoundland in July and think that would be a great place to try seascape photography for the first time. This information is very helpful!!!
Very informative and simple to understand. Thank you. Will go out and experiment.
Thank you very much for sharing , i'm enjoy it, Will practice tomorrow when the sun comes ...Can't wait now.
Thanks for posting this video!!! I just installed LEE Stopper Exposure Guide and looking forwards to getting my filters!!!
Thank you! Now I can go out and get my filters!
Thanx Gary for making this vlog I didn't realise how simple long exposures with big stoppers could be. Very informative many thanx Gary best wishes!
Mark 2064 - you’re welcome
Using NDTimer or Lee ND app are life savers. I have switched to Lee's Pro IRND to avoid the color cast with their original ND filters. Don't forget to cover up viewfinder for longer exposures to prevent light leaks. Nice tutorial. As you know the histogram is a JPEG representation of the RAW image. I typical ETTR without clipping giving more room to play with the shadows.
I use a cast-less filter too but I miss the Lee blue hue. Strange but true :)
What a boss! I've been trying so hard to find this information because my camera was being very frustrating and GREAT to know that I might just be missing some gear.
Thanks for a super easy to follow and well dictated video!
Very kind of you to say Casey. thank you
Excellent Gary, a simple video tutorial, very easy to understand. Thank you.
Cheers 👍👍
Great video, I'll be using this tutorial when I'm in Cornwall next week.
Great video, I use pretty much the same technique when doing long exposures. One tip regarding the Lee big stopper app. There's a lee proglass app in the app store that has a few extra functions making it even more useful (for example combining ND filters, having a timer, etc...). Same icon but red instead of blue, also completely free.
geert1845 - I’ll look it up cheers 👍🏻
Many thanks Gary. I have had my ND filters for three months now. You have made it look so simple. All the best Vince
Great tutorial! Simple and efficient!
Cheers 👍
Now I saw the 2 part. Excellent way of presentation Gary.
Great video for both new and experienced photographers. Thanks Gary.
Fantastic results. I don't have a ND filter yet for long exposures but I will get one when I can.
As an amateur I appreciate you are making it simple and easy for me,thanks.
Once again thanks for the simple-to-understand video... I have a simple mind, so I never overthink anything! 🙂
Gary the tutorial on settings at Cleveleys were brilliant very help full thankyou much appreciate cheers 🍻 😊😊
Hi Gary, Thanks a lot for the great tutorial! It was very, very useful for me! God bless you!
Gary, sound advice on keeping it simple. A bit repetitive in the delivery. Someone else commented on covering the eyepiece - I thought that was a myth until I was doing some waterfall shots and gained a nice magenta stripe across the image. I now cover up whenever I use my 6 or 10 stop filters. One thing I learned from this vlog is how close Mary's Shell is to the prom - images always give the impression it is totally isolated - obviously good compositions!
Steve Hartley - none taken Steve 😁😁 I use a Canon 5D and I never have to cover the eyepiece. This is why I didn’t mention it. Guess you’re using a Nikon? That was a joke btw 😀😀
@@GaryGough yes, lifetime habit I can't afford to change! I never knew Canon were immune.
Stunning pictures at the end 🤩
Thank you 👍👍
Good work Gary. A tip to work out long exposures without the apps: once set up in AV mode the camera will show 30 blinking if it needs longer to exposure. Simply double ISO to 200. Still blinking? Double again to 400. It might now show say 25secs to exposure correctly. Now go into bulb mode, same aperture, set ISO back to 100 then double 25secs twice ie 50 then 1min40. BINGO! Not only don’t you need the smart phone but it gives your brain a nice mental workout 🤪
Simon Turnbull - and this is an easier way Simon?
Gary Gough lol...well it’s a way if your phone runs out of juice
Very helpful and insightful, many thanks Gary, appreciated your simple video so much!
Cheers
Excellent tutorial Gary! Thanks. The only thing I add with stoppers is to cover the eyepiece on my camera using a microfibre cloth
I love your down to earth teaching , this is great thank you
Excellent advice - clear cut and straightforward. I will be using that technique on my next trip to NZ.
Thanks Gary for all your explanations & your diction. This allows me to better understand your way to the filters. Again thanks & it's a "froggy" that says it !!!!! Have a good week end to you. Cheers
That looks like my father cycling along@8:10. He has mentioned the money spent on the sea wall from Cleveleys up to Fleetwood and how useful it for cycling along. Some years ago I sent him a camera with Manual on thinking he'd spend some time on the Promenade, but he changed his phone which had a easier camera on and he sent me the camera back.
Hi Gary, this is the clearest tutorial I've found on this topic. Much appreciated
That was very helpful THANK YOU for the information....I LIKE!!!
Glad it was helpful!
buh lodd iee brilliant set of vids , simple , ive only been doing this malarkey for 43 years and just been doing nd photos ,but you have nailed it on the head for me , plus the app is better than the one I have , straightforward set of simple rules to follow , liked the bit where you zoomed into the focus point to enlarge it set focus .pull out and shoot , never done that before , great stuff 10/10
Glad you liked it, thank you
Booked marked new and late to the game but hopefully going to give this a try when I can get over to North Wales 👍🏻
Gary, thank you for this video. Very clear explanation.
Hi Gary What about closing the view finder to avoid stray light during long exposures ? Nice video
Yep fair point 👍👍
I like the simplified method very nice. One point, I believe you left one item out that I believe is very important. The back viewfinder should be covered with an eyepiece cap during exposure available for most cameras. This ensures that stray light does not enter and ruin the shot. This is especially true as the exposure gets longer. I had this happen when I was learning the process and the stray light left color casts and light streaks which ruined the photographs. This is a standard procedure for all my long exposure photography.
My camera isn't effected by light entering the eyepiece on any exposures upto 4 minutes long. If I shoot longer exposures during a very sunny day then I will always cover the eyepeice. I have mentioned this a few times before. I'm not sure what camera you are using Charles but I would be very worried if light was creeping into the eyepeice on a 2-minute exposure
Thanks Gary. Another video where I learned a great tidbit of information. Great presentation as well.
really impressed.Thank you,Gary!
Thanks Gary. I've watched this video with great interest, over and over again; in the past it was easy with my 5D-II, but I recently switched cameras and I'm having a lot of trouble using the light meter on my Z8. Maybe you can give me some advice. Cheers, congratulations on your work.
Great demonstration Gary as always
I like it. Keep it simple.
I use a screw-on ND filter and I find that it's best to focus using AF, screw the filter in, and then switch to MF.
Thanks Gary for taking the time to record this helpful video. (I'm pretty comfortable with the maths.) One other aspect I encounter when going to, say, 4 minutes is that the light situatiion will actually change during the exposure so you may have needed 480 seconds at the start and just 120 seconds by the end, and the histogram will have retrospectively dropped off the right hand end of the shelf. I think it needs a bit of judgement or even luck sometimes. I climb mountains and try to avoid too much luggage (remote timer is hassle). Fuji XT2 can be set for up to 15 minutes exposure without any add on kit.
Fantastic explanation, simple and straight to point, thank you
Excellent video and instruction. Clear and easy. I have subscribed.
Cracking Video as usual Gary, Probably the best explanation I've seen on UA-cam regarding filters and settings.
Awesome video! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Glad you liked it, thank you
Nice video Gary. Very clear instructions. Also nice to bump into you at Derwentwater, I hope you got some great shots. After a while I've gotten used to using NDs to the point where I can ball park the exposure without resorting to apps. For a 10 stop for instance, easy to remember that 1/30s becomes 30s so you can work either side of that point - so for instance 1/15s = 60s.
DaveB - Hi Dave. Thanks for saying hi too 😁
Yep, I always tell people to remember 3 shutter speeds... 30 15 & 8. These are likely to be the only shutter speeds you’ll need to consider. See you out there again xx
There is always great things to learn from your video, excellent work, thank you very much Gary👍😊
Happy Chocolate very kind, thank you
Hi Gary. I've really enjoy and have done quite a bit of long exposure photography myself. I actually preferred the 13 second shot as whilst it smoothed out the water, it still retained some texture within it. That's not to say I wouldn't create a much longer exposure. I note you didn't make any reference to back button focus, which is the method I prefer. Keep up the great work. Cheers. Paul
Paul Burwood - hi Paul. I know what you mean Re the 13 second shot. I’m not a fan of BBF. I know loads of people are so that’s cool of course. Cheers 👍🏻
I use bbf, am I correct In saying that I wouldn't have to switch Manual mode off 🤔
Good refresher for technique I only use occasionally!
Thanks for sharing your know-how Gary - good stuff!
Great info as usual Garry and fabulous images 👍🏽
Very kind, cheers Steve
Ahhh now I know what I'm doing wrong. I've got an 8-stop filter. Doh. LOL. Great video, thank you. Just need to get out and practice.
Cheers Jesse 👍👍
Brilliant, you’re my new favourite teacher
Very helpful Gary. Love your videos and photos.
Thankyou, this is exactly what I was looking for, oh I live quite close to Blackpool
Thanks! A great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. And on top of everything for free! Thanks!
Thank you Jan 👍👍
Great, very helpful video. Thank you for this.
Must try this Gary 👍
I'm usually a guess work user, with a little help from the histogram initially and the result on the screen 😱
ELTIN JONES - it’s always good to learn the science 😁
Great advice will put this into practice
Thank you
I'm a beginner in photography with a Canon M50. This video was awesome! thank you so much and the Lee app is very good. thank you for sharing.
Glad you liked it, thank you
I like the way things are explained here! Instantly subscribed! :)
Brilliant, Gary! Love your dragged out shutter images, keep going, mate!
Adam Gibbs hi Adam,, very kind my good friend. Thank you
great vlog gary , beautifully demonstrated and simple to practise, awesome images as a result
Thanks Gary. To the point. Good work. Carry-on.
Very helpful, thank you Gary!
You're welcome Andy 👍👍
Thanks Gary for the simple and practical explanation.
I just wish that on NIKON with AP-C sensor it would be easy to use the histogram and LIVE VIEW.
Greetings from Brazil.
It's difficult? How come? Thank you btw
@@GaryGough On Nikon LIVE VIEW darkens when you place the ND 4, 8, 16 or 10 stops and you no longer see the scene of your composition.
And there is no way to brighten LIVE VIEW, and the histogram only appears after the picture taken. Before taking the picture there is no way to check the histogam. But anyway we are trying to make some pictures here with our NIKON D7200.
Greetings from Brazil.
