You should do an operating session with your O gauge, using your Terrier to shunt, the 14xx to take an autotrain, and a Jinty to take a small goods! I would watch the entire way through the video, I love shunting!
You are creeping me out Caden! When you have shunted wagons out in the cold, rain, snow and wind it tends to dampen one's enthusiasm! Still, it is good to see you are keen. Stay happy and safe.
Since you are having issues with the Dapol couplings, I suggest you get in touch with an 0 gauge club and ask them what coupling chains they use. You might even be able to get in touch with an OEM like Heljan and order a box of their couplings to replace the Dapol ones.
Oh, that's beautiful. I think that the real vehicle was built like the Sentinel road waggons, with the boiler at the front, making the flat end of this the front - although being a shunter, it doesn't really matter which direction it runs in. I can't get over how much better it is than the 'OO' version. I'll say it again: Beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
I have two questions 1. Why do you use different controllers for reviews? Sometimes I see you use the HM2000 and other times I see you use a Gaugemaster controller 2. Can you switch directions with the HM2000 while running a locomotive or will it short out the controller?
I've always used the HM2000 for O gauge, though I will be changing to gaugemaster soon! Yes you can change direction on the fly - there's a small dead zone in the centre position of each switch! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Thank you Sam! I've been hoping you'd cover this model. I'm lucky enough to have a £130 one that's been in my Hatton's Trunk since AUGUST where it's been waiting 3 months for Peco to make the track to run it on - GRR! Now I simply cannot wait until the whole 'package' is complete and I can have this sent to me. Your review has really reassured me and got me excited for mine - cheers!
Hattons trunk service is brilliant. I now use it to order all sorts of items for my layout. It saves money on postage as well if you get the amount high enough.

Got mine 4 month ago and it runs vety rough l right out of the box. After I bent the pickups for more pressure on the wheels I runs smooth. I even made my own Thomas and Friends character that is a blue Sentinel engine (but lacking the wasp stripes). I might get this version someday and turn it into said fanmade Thomas character, along with some wagons and 2-rail O gauge track.
Out of curiosity, whats that wall with all those pictures at 16:11 for example? I see all those names so I guess it's fanart or other stuff like that? You never mention something like that so is it something from a long time ago?

If you are interested, Hattons has another Riverossi Challanger used for a really reasonable price. Not quite a Big Boy but still a very impressive locomotive!
Nice engine! I do find it amusing that you find value from material and size. While metal castings and size of engine does add to the cost of production, MOST of the cost of an engine comes from how much demand the manufacturer estimates for a model, and the 3d modeling/rendering of the model. So the O scale model, while being larger, shouldnt have a huge price difference than the HO model, since they already have the 3d models, which can just be enlarged and slightly modified. The fact that it is 8x larger doesnt scale as far as price point goes. Its also why Bachmann engines cost is outrageous sometimes, since they didnt expect demand to be as high for certain engines, so they have to raise the price to cover the additional tooling costs. Lastly, it does explain why sometimes, the "streamlined" model with LESS detail costs just as much as the non streamlined engines. Because demand is sometimes lower. Enjoyable video as always!
Yeah I suppose you're right, but the increase in scale here also leads to an increase in detail and number of separately fitted parts... and the evidence for this is all over this model! The amount of assembly involved in this must have been insane, and for the price I thought that was very impressive! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow! Saw these on hattons and didn’t think they’d be great for the size and £175, but that cab changed my mind almost immediately! I would say that the steam ones are more impressive due to their size. If Dapol would make a train set with this with 2 wagons plus tracks for around £400 I would buy it almost imminently
The black badge on the side is the same as what they had on their steam lorries. The Super sentinel steam lorry makes for a brilliant pub crawl vehicle when your in a large group :-D

Once upon a wooden table, a young man named Tat had laid down a single oval of 00 gauge track. The table was one of those that folded up neatly when not in use. The fellow was named Tat to stand for tried and tested. However, there was one thing wrong with the table: the middle part had rotted away completely due to suffering wear and tear from the outside elements. Tat asked his Father, who was a carpenter by trade, if he had something of a sturdy shelf about him. "Here's one I made earlier," Father quoted happily. "This should do the trick." Father and Son carefully fitted the shelf for size. It was several centimetres too long. The middle-aged man took the shelf into his workshop at the back of the house, and sawed it exactly in half. It made for two sturdy suspension bridges. The two halves fitted on either side perfectly. Tat was very grateful. "Thanks, Dad. What would I do without you?" Father winked. "Just be careful when playing with trains," he advised smiling. "Don't want a railway disaster now, do we?" Tat agreed, laughing with the joke. His Father was always joking. One week later, Father and Son were playing trains together. Unfortunately, Tat had forgotten that water and electricity don't mix. He put his water bottle down on the table, and played with trains a bit too fast. "Bother," he sighed. "Should have been more careful." A loud explosion erupted, but nothing sustained damage. Except for the shelf halves, that is. They splintered and snapped in two, leaving a tightrope gap on each side. Not good. Father and Son played trains once more, yet the tight-roped track couldn't take the weight. SNAP! CRASH! The track, sturdy as it usually was, broke. A Tiny Terrier Tank Engine and six coal wagons, plus an LNER Guard's Van, smashed themselves to smithereens on the wooden floorboards. Tat was in tears. "Don't worry," Father assured him. "It was my fault for not reminding you. Accidents happen." The middle-aged man paid all damage fees and was given a refund. Play began anew. That was how Tat liked it.
Ahh Kelly - at last a spooky halloween story from you! Wasn't as scary as I'd hoped, but the thought of those tracks breaking did make me nervous! Very good work! :D
Two things: 1: I must say I really like the Sentinel because of its odd shape - it looks like if someone made a steam loco in Minecraft, but also built it backwards (since the boiler is in the cab, and I used to think what is actually likely a pipe for water to be fed into looked like a chimney). Plus it's a shunter, and steam locos used for shunting often just look really cool. 2: I think the flickering firebox is just a standard thing on Dapol models, as I bought a OO LSWR B4 the other week and it also has an LED firebox. If I had an O-gauge collection and plans for an O-gauge line, then I would totes get this. It's really cool and seems to perform perfectly. 'Tis a shame the Model Rail one sucks (and the Sentinels of this design were LNER and LMS, so I probs wouldn't get one anyway).
Thanks for sharing - haha yeah, I wonder if I could build one in Minecraft? Yeah it is - many have it - but it's a fab feature! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It jut goes to show that Dapol can produce a really good quality loco at a very reasonable price. The level of detail is superb, along with the mechanism! Why couldn't Dapol produce the same level of deiail and performance with their collaboration with Rails of Sheffield for that "ultimate" Terrier? O gauge locos costing similar to OO gauge locos, that's pretty damn good in my book! Excellent review as always, Sam!
just now I realised that it looks like with your OO guage track you run trains as if they are mainline, whereas with O gauge you seem to run them as if they are on a heritage railway. I kinda like it
@@SamsTrains You’re welcome as always. Are used to think these sentences were always diesels. I can tell it’s a steam engine, yet this one has got a robust and square body like a diesel.
@@SamsTrains There is also a similar, but larger engine, Which looks like a cross between a sentinel and a Beyer Garratt, but it has 12 wheels. This engine in question is a Colombian Steam motor locomotive. One is preserved in Argentina.
Nice review on the Dapol O Gauge Sentinel! For its size, it’s really impressive! I like the details that it has on this model! I can imagine putting figurines inside the cab due to the size of the interior! Overall, nice ratings you gave to this locomotive even the quality isn’t a 5 star, but everything else is excellent! I’m gonna give this a solid A! Nice review you did today Sam! 😃👍
Didnt realize it was O gauge until I read the title, looked like it would be an OO model made like the Ruston shunter. Also really excited becuase I'm just days away from getting the 24 month badge for my CME rank! Never made such a financial commitment for this long haha!
haha yeah - the photos are always very deceptive! That's so awesome, thanks so much for your kind support - I really do appreciate it! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I bet my Aunt would love to have one of those in HO/OO scale as she likes small locos and rolling stock. Heck I might just build her a branch line where she can run those locos all day long. You should do a Union Pacific Big Boy, 4-6-6-4 Challenger or a GER Class A55 Tank Engine next. They are big.
Best thing Dapol did following Dave Jones departure was to get together with Richard Webster. I can't think of anyone better qualified to wash that bad taste out. I'm not as much of an O fan, not enough operational scope offset by the space needed, I'd rather have a decent N roundy than a tiny O shunting plank in the same space, but I've owned Richard Websters models from back in Lionheart Trains days for use on the club layout and they are fantastic. Have a look at Ixion too, every bit as good as Lionheart (Dapol) O gauge. Their Hudswell Clarkes are stunning models, and their Fowler 0-4-0DM is every bit as quirky as this Sentinel. Minerva make some very good O gauge RTR as well, their Peckett is a favourite of mine.
Maybe you should try Lionel on the o gauge tracks. Lionel is a american o gauge train company which also made ho trains at points. However the trains look huge so there’s a slight chance Lionel would fit on the layout. Great video as always!
Looks lovely! Sadly, I don't really have the space to set up a decent O gauge layout... maybe one day. Hopefully, you'll get a proper brake van soon - but for now, the wagon and the OO Sentinel make a decent enough substitute :) .
Great Video!!! If only I had the money to do O gauge!!!! I am planning to get one of model rails 00 gauge sentinels for my micro layout that's in an IKEA Crate!!!
Sam have you seen the 0 gauge A4s they look quite nice and thought you might be interested in them. The review was amazing the 00 gauge model sounds like a distorted R2D2 scream
0 gauge models are so well detailed. I still think you need to bridge that gap on your 0 gauge layout with a bridge. Are you going to try a Heljan 0 gauge loco next?
One thing about that O Gauge line - the bit where the track isn't properly supported. I think I have a miniature heart attack when I see the rails bend under the weight of the loco as it crosses!
It is a brilliant loco. Very pleased with mine. Ever considered reviewing any N gauge Sam? You would have a field day with some of the "interesting" quality variations.
That's a nice little National Coal Board shunter, not as nice as the Peckett B2 Class National Coal Board by hornby. But still looks like a really good model.
That bit behind the boiler is the actual engine.....so vertical cylinders etc. The driver stands next to the boiler alongside the fireman.....the coal is literally poured through a narrow hole in the top of the boiler......the flat end is technically the front...the other end is the water tank.
Very good video! Personally I do not have the space (or money) for O gauge but I dont think you can beat it for detail. I think you should put this next to your OO gauge Sentinel Shunter.
Oooh! Haven't watched yet, but let's hope it's better than the OO gauge one.

Hi Sam, Loved the review, I am warming to the O gauge a lot , Nice one , All the Best Brian 🤗
Thanks so much Brian, so am I!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ooooooooh this looks good. It reminds me of the railway modeller issue with the layout”Fry’s Somerdale”.-Das Mann.
Thanks a lot Das, I'll have to look out for that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice to see you do o gauge as well!
Thank you - I love doing it too!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
From the railway explorers' channels, there are goods yards that had one or two sidings, or just a through-rail and a siding.
Ahh glad to hear that - maybe mine counts then?!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Two things:
1: I must say I really like the Sentinel because of its odd shape - it looks like if someone made a steam loco in Minecraft, but also built it backwards (since the boiler is in the cab, and I used to think what is actually likely a pipe for water to be fed into looked like a chimney).
Yeah you're right!! We totally need more models like this one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
just now I realised that it looks like with your OO guage track you run trains as if they are mainline, whereas with O gauge you seem to run them as if they are on a heritage railway. I kinda like it
haha yeah you're right - it's totally through necessity though! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Gotta love those sentinel steam shunters. I especially love the stripes on this one. I absolutely love steam locos with wasp stripes.
Thanks so much Tomas, I loved this one too! :D
@@SamsTrains You’re welcome as always. Are used to think these sentences were always diesels. I can tell it’s a steam engine, yet this one has got a robust and square body like a diesel.
@@SamsTrains There’s a couple of Broadgauge sentinel steam shunters in Brazil and preservation. Only one is working
@@SamsTrains There is also a similar, but larger engine, Which looks like a cross between a sentinel and a Beyer Garratt, but it has 12 wheels. This engine in question is a Colombian Steam motor locomotive. One is preserved in Argentina.
Wonderful review sam, this Loco is very impressive, especially compared to other dapol models, keep up the great work- TheImperialDiamondSpinosaurus
Thanks so much mate - yeah I agree - really impressed! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks so much mate!! :D
Oh my god its adorable I love it 💕
Its been added to my tiny adorable favorites list of tiny adorable steam locomotives 💕💕
I know - such lovely engines!! Glad you liked it :3
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice video sam I love o gauge videos and I love and I really mean love sentinels like that keep it up sam
Thanks so much Fred, really glad you like them! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Watching your O gauge reviews really are a treat to watch. I like this better than your OO version
Thanks so much Mayo - I do too!! :D
Ooh fantastic, you might need to recommend this to hear! And sure, I'd love that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video as always. Seriously thinking about buying one and going into O gauge now
Thank you!! Ooh go for it - they're so good! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Isn't O gauge supposed to have 3 rails?
I think some locos pickup from that rail but these don’t so it’s not needed
Only the toy based part of the USA stuck with unrealistic 3 rail. The rest of the world went 2 rail by the 1960s for O scale.
This is how the British like to model O scale even for US railroads :
ua-cam.com/video/lF-JXoXGLhI/v-deo.html
Thanks John - yes most modern/UK O gauge models are 2 rail! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Love this locomotive it takes the shape of a diesel but is actually a steam
Cute little model! Nice to have a Y1 preserved! Their appearances make them similar to diesels!
Thanks Ryno, I agree very nice indeed!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I’ve got oo gauge but having seen this review I’m strongly considering o gauge!!
haha fantastic - I can definitely reccommend it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great review! Looking forward to a review of the HM6000 then when it comes!
Thanks Peter, me too!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, me again, I have seen a lot of sentinel steam lorry’s. They actually used the same chain drive system as this!-Das Mann.
Very cool! I don't think I've ever seen one, they sound good though!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great Video Sam, Please get a Block Signalling shuttle unit for your 0 gauge they are FANTASTIC Regards David
Thanks so much David, I'll definitely look into that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That seems true - whoever was behind this kind of model needs to be commended - let's hope for more in the future!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Maybe you should try Lionel on the o gauge tracks. Lionel is a american o gauge train company which also made ho trains at points. However the trains look huge so there’s a slight chance Lionel would fit on the layout. Great video as always!
Maybe! Some of the 3 rail stuff?!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Looks lovely! Sadly, I don't really have the space to set up a decent O gauge layout... maybe one day.
Hopefully, you'll get a proper brake van soon - but for now, the wagon and the OO Sentinel make a decent enough substitute :) .
Thanks Christopher - yes space is always the problem isn't it? Yes I will look for a brake! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great Video!!! If only I had the money to do O gauge!!!! I am planning to get one of model rails 00 gauge sentinels for my micro layout that's in an IKEA Crate!!!
Ahh I know that's the thing - good old Dapol though, bringing the prices down so that us mortals can partake! haha ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam have you seen the 0 gauge A4s they look quite nice and thought you might be interested in them. The review was amazing the 00 gauge model sounds like a distorted R2D2 scream
Yeah I have seen them - I'd be very tempted!! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam a question did you get a new mic?
No! Not for a year or two! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh ok I asked because your voice sounded a bit different
£ 150 wow thats incredible for a O Gauge model ! great vid sam
I know!! And they're down to £130 now! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Can you make a video of you racing your locomotives, btw great review!
Great idea - I'd like that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What a loco.
Absolutely!! :D
This is just a lovely shunter and overall a lovly locomotive!
Thanks mate, I think so too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
My only concern is the noise it makes
Apart from that for price detail and the running of the machine this is a no brainer Fantastic deal
Yeah the noise wasn't great, though it's much better after a few hours running! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
When I first saw the thumbnail I was like "WHA??" Great job Sam! You should look into some MTH or Lionel American Trains! Lol
haha I know - it looks so cool doesn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
0 gauge models are so well detailed. I still think you need to bridge that gap on your 0 gauge layout with a bridge. Are you going to try a Heljan 0 gauge loco next?
Thanks Ben - haha yeah maybe you're right! Sure, I'll be trying some Heljan soon! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Will you make the o gauge layout bigger one day
I'd love to, but there's no room :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam! 😀👍
Thank you! :D
One thing about that O Gauge line - the bit where the track isn't properly supported. I think I have a miniature heart attack when I see the rails bend under the weight of the loco as it crosses!
haha yeah, I've seen a few comments like this - it's fine though - I've tested it with many KG! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Every time I watch a O gauge review I fear that the loco will just derail and crash on the double oo gauge layout.
Great video
haha I know - I'm hoping that won't happen! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Love the interior detail. Out of curiosity, are you planning to complete an 'O' gauge loop (assuming you have the room)?
Thanks Edward, I'd love nothing more, but I don't have the room :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They did an 08 a few years ago that was selling for 160.00, just over ten pounds more than the Hornby 08.
You're right - absolutely crazy stuff!! D:
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It is a brilliant loco. Very pleased with mine. Ever considered reviewing any N gauge Sam? You would have a field day with some of the "interesting" quality variations.
Very glad to hear that! N gauge would be great - I have thought about it! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Do it Sam!
That's a nice little National Coal Board shunter, not as nice as the Peckett B2 Class National Coal Board by hornby. But still looks like a really good model.
Thanks Ray, yeah the Peckett is probably nicer... though I'd love to see a Dapol one in O gauge! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Do you think you'll ever detail the 0 gauge track (e.g. some trees, platform, houses).
Maybe! Though it's very tight for space :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I believe the GWR also had a sentinel built
Yes I have seen a GWR one too! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam you gonna buy some bachmann g gauge Thomas loco/stock for your o gangue lay out? that be good to see as you already have ho Thomas locos
I'm not sure about that - I don't think G scale would fit :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That bit behind the boiler is the actual engine.....so vertical cylinders etc. The driver stands next to the boiler alongside the fireman.....the coal is literally poured through a narrow hole in the top of the boiler......the flat end is technically the front...the other end is the water tank.
Ooh okay!! Yeah of course, that makes sense - couldn't be anywhere else I suppose!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It would be nice if Hornby started making o gauge again because the main thing missing from O gauge is Multi units like the Pendolino 390
I agree - I'd love to see what Hornby could do with O gauge! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
There actually is a Thomas OC based on these locomotives named Robert though I can't actually remember who created him for their series
Ooh really?! I didn't know that! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains that's right I know you see an original character created by the fans
Sam i have has just ordered the DCC version. Thant was the good part The bad bit is i don't own any other O Gauge nothing not one bit
Ooh fantastic - that's all you need, the seed! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Good job there was nothing on the O gauge track when you did the inertia plate experiment
haha true, lol! ;D
If I am not wrong, this company Sentinel also made steam buses and lorries right??? I probably had seen this fact somewhere!!!
They did indeed - you're right! :D
@@SamsTrains BTW Sam, once more a great video!!! Keep it up man!
Very good video! Personally I do not have the space (or money) for O gauge but I dont think you can beat it for detail. I think you should put this next to your OO gauge Sentinel Shunter.
Thanks a lot Ollie, no problem mate - I think you're right though!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam, you should get a Dapol O gauge Pannier tank 😁
Thanks a lot Mark, I should! :D
Where can I get the track for O gauge?
I think Peco may be out of stock at the moment, but most of the major retailers stock the rails usually (no covid)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thank you sam
