Not everyone, but why I do get the feeling that Asians from Southern California, USA generally have this unique brand of “superiority-inferiority” complex? Also maybe a tad removed from the global Asian experience?
(Don’t mean to discount anyone’s experiences, though.)

I think Asian from Wyoming are the best because they're so rare like diamonds
California asians are usually a few generations ahead so they are more economically stable and more Americanized. Compared to other asians in other states, they're more like 1st-2nd generation so they have a different adjustment to life. However, the disadvantage is that with growing global trends out of East Asian mainly led by China as a rising superpower, Asian Americans as a whole really have no place in the world now. They're less welcomed in America and they're not welcomed in their homelands as well but here they are, having meaningless discussion like this.
After reading some more comments, I think also the superiority complex may arise from a lower probability of fitting "boring typical Asian life archetype stereotypes" or at least having supplemental identities and experiences beyond that box....which leads to "feeling just way cooler".
Not me 'bros. Old school asian here. We need to stick together, not stir the pot!
Superiority complication always goes hand in hand with insecurity
East Coast Asians, mainly NYC seem to be more competitive, even within their own community and more career focused and more about the hustle and bustle, whereas Cali Asians seem more laid back and have a stronger sense of community.
It depends who you associate with. I left a toxic group of friends who were like that and never looked book. I’ve never met a group of people sounded so sure that the recipe for success was to live in a certain zip code or own certain things.

😂😂😂 this is funny. I'm a 52 year old Mexican-Asian American born in the 70s. My mom is full blooded Japanese and Father is full blooded Mexican. I'm so old. My birth certificate says my dad is Caucasian because we all know Mexican is not a race. Before whitey started dividing us. Anyway I grew up in SoCal around majority Mexican and whites. Hardly any Asian. It didn't bother me because I passed for Mexican or Asian. I can understand how full blooded Asians would have a harder time, back then, especially my cousins on my mom's side from the 50th state.

90’s AZN culture set the standards for Asian Americans. Since a lot of them were more established bc they were already a generation or two deep being Americanized vs everywhere else (maybe expect east coast Asian) where there 1st gen Asian American. The new kids from so cal is just benefiting off the hard work from the 90’s AZN.
California is basically a bordering state to Asia, which explains why more is going on. I think that due to it being a "border" state and more Asians there, Calfornia Asians may find it harder to grasp how the rest of America is and many may become delusional.
What is crazy, is that I though Asians were everywhere in the US. I grew up next to La Crescenta, CA which has a huge Korean population. I have lived in other states now, and there are VERY FEW Asians. It is crazy
It’s easy for them to say that because Cali has the largest population of Asians in the US that spans beyond 1st and 2nd generation. It’s like a giant Asian bubble. No different than the Latinos there! I saw the most Mexican grandma and she spoke perfect English?! That’s rare to find that in GA because the generations haven’t extended beyond 1st and 2nd yet.
I see what they’re saying. I’ve been around stuck up Asians before, being from SoCal. I’ve always had different interests though, so I’m sort of an outsider and I’m an introvert. I do have plenty of acquaintances that fit the description though.

I don't understand this kind of mentality, with a certain group of Asians thinking they're better than another group of Asians. I never grew up with this kind of mentality, I think people who do, are sad. Because at the end of the day, non-Asians will always see you as 1 group, Asian, whether Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laos, Khmer, Chinese, Thai, South Korean, Japanese, doesn't matter, because non-Asians will only see the colour of your skin & categorise you as yellow skinned, I don't really get what all the fuss is about.
Our own differences, in culture, beliefs, customs, is what makes us all unique in our own way, we should all respect each other's cultures, customs, beliefs, at least that's how I was brought up to behave, to respect others of other cultures, backgrounds, no matter the colour.
When CV-19 hit most major metropolitan cities around the world, what we saw was a large number of our Asian brothers, Sisters, Uncles, aunts being attacked indiscriminately based on our colour, which is racist. We only have western rubbish msm, western leaders to blame for this. People were attacked, based on the colour of their skin, Asians, Vietnamese, South Korean, Chinese, Japanese, even Filipinas, Thai, Laos, Cambodian, all were attacked due to the viral spreading of misinformation, propaganda against China, by all Western msm, including western leaders, the former US president, Trump, made it worse, by calling it the "Kung Flu", which prompted more attacks against Asians, even in Australia, France, Asians were attacked. Remember those Asian women who all shot by 1 single man? This brought all us Asians together, the whole Asian community came together as one, United as one against violence against Asians. Even some of the black community were standing side by side with our Asian brothers & Sisters in many American cities rallying for a stop against violence against Asians no matter the race, ethnicity. This is what all us Asians should be about.
Its okay up to a certain point to have a little competition, but when it gets heated & becomes violent, then that's not okay with me. Asians should be one big family. At least that's how it should be.

This happened to EVERY races here in the States. I live in MN, and there are tons of Somolians here, but many local black Americans don't consider them "black." Make that make sense to me. 😂 Then there are the Hispanics who were born here, and they diss the "illegal" Hispanics who live here.
Yo, I'm in Chicago and lots of Koreans here. The Korean culture is just so focused on ego that they always feel like they're better than everyone else. I think it's just mostly the Koreans. Most other Asians are pretty humble in SoCal and other parts of the US.

SoCal asian here…we don’t actually really believe that we have a superiority complex. But we also won’t accept an inferiority complex. We’re comfortable w who we are: we’ll befriend anyone who wants to be friends w us but we also won’t bother to go out of our way to try to intentionally make friends w anyone else. We’re certainly not against diversity but we don’t feel need to make active effort to pursue it either. We’re ok w being Asian in America. Everyone should feel comfortable w who they are and where they’re at.

Each of them have a back story, probably escaped from a war torn country, are different in the city they grew in and the country they were living up in. Someone raised in China might not even be the same in France or Canada or Australia or. USA But everyone’s experiences is deiffernt and have more knowledge

I understand what you're trying to say but it's stretching the reality a decent bit. There definitely is quite a significant population of ethnic Koreans in the area you're referring to, sure. But many of them have (understandably) assimilated into the broader, dominant Han Chinese culture.
Having a significant population of people from a particular nation outside of said nation is at best a diaspora, and over time if said diaspora integrates itself with the dominant people and culture of their newfound homeland, which tends to be the case (with some notable exceptions), it really ceases to be in a real, meaningful sense the people it originally was.
Are there some residual vestiges of the way of life that was brought by the initial Koreans who resettled in Jilin Province? For sure, as is with other similar cases, but over time the trend as proceeding generations come and go tends to head in one ultimate direction.
It isn't an inherently positive or negative development (at least from how I see it, as an ethnic Korean who considers themself an American first and foremost, but it's good to keep in mind the broader processes that shape humanity and history as a whole), it's just the way of the world.

I grew up in So Cal (Temecula) and when I moved to Seattle I had a huge cultural awakening as a black woman. I made friends with a lot Hmong community but also am in the healthcare field so I had a lot of asian doctors from all over the world. I miss Seattle, nothing beats Seattle Asians.
I never realized Socal is such a huge spot for Koreans, but it's true. I've known so many Koreans growing up here and it never crossedy mind until now.
I think it is also true though, for some reason everybody in Socal has that superiority complex. Maybe it's because of LA being the hub for the emtertainment industry or something like that I'm too sure. But it definitely is here.

Actually China has the most Koreans outside of Korea unless you´re talking about the US as a whole.
I think it more has to do with competition and who is "more Asian". One of the people in that clip states that if you aren't from So-Cal, you aren't really Asian, you have to prove it to him. This is something that me and lots of other Asian people have experienced when speaking to So-Cal Asians. "If you aren't raised around the same experiences or cultures, how do we have the same identity?"
Californian Asians are lucky to be surrounded by a community of people that look like them! That isn't the case for plenty of Asians within America. For those of us outside of California who didn't grow up near authentic Asian food (outside of the home) or were bullied for the color of our skin, it feels like So-Cal Asians are once again reinforcing the narrative of Asians being the other. "You aren't Asian enough because you aren't from So-Cal". That's the sort of thing that I think most people take issue with.
And I grew up in western Washington! I had support from a community that is Asian! But I've met so many So-Cal Asians who have this way of thinking that it's discouraging.
I have hung out with both types and must agree that the SoCAL Asian babes are better looking, but not as smart as the NorCal Asian treats.
NY ABC in middle age who has lived in NorCal. I never got bad vibes from Asians during time in California. I'm primarily speaking about Chinese and Viet communities; can't speak to Korean hood out there. One of the earlier posters @andrews68 said it best: don't have an inferiority complex!
I'm a rural county Asian. I didn't even know that this was a thing.
As an American of Korean stock whose been to Southern California --all I can say, from my own perspective is that I wasn't particularly impressed and if anything was disappointed as someone raised in NYC and had prior dreamed of relocating to San Francisco when I first started making YT videos / working in the tech startup scene.
Other than the admittedly pleasant weather, it's ridiculously overpriced and the public infrastructure seemed as good as Florida's which is abysmal considering how concentrated the population is in the former vs. the latter.
Much of California in terms of the population centers has been built on top of essentially arid desert that for the last couple of centuries has been blessed with relatively temperate climate conditions. It's no wonder why droughts and brush fires are so common there and not to mention that California is located on the San Andreas Fault (yay for potentially devastating earthquakes and tremors, I guess?)...
To not be a total SoCal or California (in general) hater, I'd definitely visit again for a week or so again eventually but I don't see in 2024 unless one has family or was brought up there why they'd choose to make that area the main base for them to operate out of unless they're planning on a career in Hollywood or Silicon Valley, which themselves are undergoing massive upheavals in terms of what they are as economic and cultural institutions. At least the Santa Monica Pier is scenic and the food is solid, eh?
Maybe it because I've also lived in the South for almost a decade and have been fortunate enough to have been able to make time to travel all across the East Coast, but America has historically been built in the East Coast not the West Coast. Everyone, especially Koreans, are more often-then-not going to hype up a place especially if that's where they are from but one only has to look at American history to know that the mentality discussed in the video is pretty myopic and self-aggrandizing.

I am also Korean and from California and lived in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Detroit for a few months, and been to the East coast a few times, and traveled all over the Southwest and California.
I could see why you have that perspective coming from the East Coast. America is so large, NY or Louisiana or California are basically like different countries... We just have America and language in common. The fact that you even mentioned public transportation.... LOL... In California? HAHA That already tells me your entire mindset and thought processes are so different from someone from California. Cars is the only way to get around, and California is centered around their car culture... We have more cars per person than anywhere else. And keep in mind, WE Were the Wild Wild WEST... and in many ways, we still are the wild west. You cannot come to California expecting things to be civilized and structured like the East Coast. California is still the Wild West, and people are still coming here for the Historic GOLD RUSH. People think its over, but in many ways its not. Majority of people in SOCAL has nothing to do with HOLLYWOOD or even Silicon Valley... Those are significant but in terms of JOBS, these are small industries compared to our truly GIANT industries like Construction, Transportation, Services, and SMALL BUSINESSES... Small MOM AND POP owned businesses like small restaurants, small construction companies, CPAs or Tax centers, Nail Salons, and so and so make up over 60% to nearly 70% of the economy. Just the number of 1million+ Homes in California is astronomical... Basically the average home is 1 million, and there are millions of it. The scale of money and population of families and homes is INSANE, even NY doesn't come close to number of population and million dollar homes... AND ALL of it needs servicing, and work eventually... The amount of money exchanging hands in California everyday is GARGANTUAN. There is seemingly limitless amount of money and opportunities here... That is why people come here.... Its the wild west... You gotta bring your cowboy game.

Bro, you just don't understand. As an east coast Korean who has spent time in SoCal (and NorCal and NYC as well, albeit a while ago) it's just completely different. Just to give you an example- in the early 2000's (not sure about now) the Asian club scene was sooo poppin that one club would be the it club for awhile then 6 months later it would move to a different club.
Whereas in places like NYC, Chicago or whereever else, there's just the asian bar or korean bar it doesn't change even over a decade. The scene there is so poppin- that it's like how NYC nighlife was at the time- hot nightclub now and then it shifts again in 6-12 months. It's simply on a different level.
Even if things are different now- it's still on another level based on my last visit in 2018.
feel like there's still a mentality of "assimilate" mindset and change ourselves to go with the system but never question the system and change the system for ourselves. I see other groups act the complete opposite.

I feel West Asians are more accepting than East Coast Asians. Since they are a lot more of them over they get to meet different types of Asians. Especially when it comes to people with disabilities. I see a lot of Asian Americans helping in special programs that help people with disabilities get jobs. Not to say East Coast Asians aren’t accepting but they seem more judgmental especially if you do get into top universities.

I’ve lived in both SoCal and in New York and I must say Cali Asians are more cool even if it’s by a margin. New Yorkers might be more open but they’re just not the type to represent Asians in their locale. Cali Asians are more representative of their locale. Even the Asians in Cali are into EDM/festivals and even dress up for the occasion. It’s a minority of New Yorkers who even do it if at all. Overall, I say Cali Asians are better overall.

I grew up in SoCal but away from the enclaves, lots of racism. I'm raising my kids in a SoCal enclave. It's not about feeling superior to anyone most of all other Asians. My children should have the best upbringing that I can provide for them and to me that means being able to develop a sense of self esteem that comes from growing up with people that look and act like you so that they grow into a full self fulfilling person. Mainstream American culture doesn't do that for them.
