Interrogative Pronouns - Who | Whom | What | Which | Whose - English Grammar
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 лис 2020
- Interrogative pronouns serve to form special questions. Each pronoun from this group is used to create a special question or an indirect question.
Interrogative pronouns help to get to know unknown persons or objects that must be named in the response.
They are also called WH-pronouns: WHO, WHOM, WHAT, WHICH, WHOSE
We decided to include other question words to this topic.
In English, interrogative words like what, which, whose can be used as determiners in interrogative sentences. It should be remembered that these words can serve as determiners of a noun, pronoun in interrogative sentences, as well as to make a choice between someone or something.

You're an excellent teacher 👍. I become confused with these topic while teaching to my students. Bcz as per the rule only 5 WH questions to introduce to the students. I feel 'where', 'when ', 'why' also included to the WH questions, so that students query will be cleared 😀
Dear Mehazabeena,
"We use interrogative pronouns to ask questions. They are: who, which, whom, what and whose. These are also known as wh-words"
(dictionary.cambridge)
'Where' is a wh-word. 'When' is a wh-word.
The adverb 'how' most commonly means ‘in what way’ (dictionary.cambridge)
From our opinion, it worth to include wh-words where/when/how into the "interrogative pronouns" topic.

I am wondering whether "where" is regarded as an interrogative pronoun even though most of the resources I found only take it as an interrogative adverb.
Why I am thinking of where as an pronoun?
Here is a sentence
Where are you "from"?
Does it make sense?

For people who learn English as a second or foreign language, pronouns can seem like a difficult topic, because in other languages they can be used differently from in English.

Is there a term for the use of “what” in response to a statement when the listener heard what was said? When “what” is being said to express surprise or to throw off the speaker.
Dear
Ellen Geller,
'what' is used in questions that show you are surprised or do not believe something:
"I just told Peter." "What?/You did what?"
What's this I hear? You're leaving?
cambridge dictionary
'what' is used as an exclamation expressing surprise or excitement and frequently introducing a question
'What, no breakfast?'
Merriam Webster

Happy learning!😀
I am really confused about that when we'll use "What" and "which".
Dear Husna,
We use interrogative pronouns to ask questions. They are: who, which, whom, what and whose. These are also known as wh-words. Questions using these are called wh-questions.
We use 'what' when we ask about specific information from a general range of possible answers: "What did you buy? What was written in that article?"
We use 'which' when we ask for specific information from a restricted range of possible answers:
"Which bike do you prefer?" - from a limited number of bikes.
"Which European languages do you want to learn?" - from a list of languages

At first it starts with: there are only 5 interrogative pronouns: who, whom, what, which and whose, and than. Than, at the test you need terms like: When, Where, How are those still Interrogative Pronouns?
Dear BMGPASS, thank you,
it's nice to meet so attentive student.
"We use interrogative pronouns to ask questions. They are: who, which, whom, what and whose. These are also known as wh-words"
(taken from dictionary.cambridge)
Where is a wh-word. When is a wh-word.
The adverb how most commonly means ‘in what way’ (taken from dictionary.cambridge)
From our opinion, it worth to include wh-words where/when/how into the "interrogative pronouns" topic.

Not helpful. You yourself are confused between interrogative pronoun, interrogative adverb, and interrogative adjective.
Dear HG, Thank you for your comment.
“We use interrogative pronouns to ask questions. They are also known as wh-words” (dictionary.cambridge)
Wh-words, including interrogative pronouns and interrogative adjectives along with "how", are used to form questions. We decided to exclude the division of wh-words according to their functions in the sentence, so as not to complicate the video.
It is impossible to fit all the English grammar into 7 minutes of video.
Best wishes
