Are you looking to start your career in marketing? If you're a new graduate, self-taught, or looking to change careers, these 7 tips will help you prepare yourself for your new marketing career.
Step 1 - Research!
Take this time and research what YOU want. There are so many aspects to marketing. Where does your passion lie? Digital, traditional, sales, visual merchandising, sports marketing? Do you want to work in an agency or on the client side? Do you specialize in design, content, SEO?
Step 2 - Research again!
Now, spend your time and research the companies, careers, and goals of the places you want to work. What kind of career paths do they offer? What sort of clients do they work with? Glassdoor offers a lot of resources to learn about the company culture.
Step 3 - Research a third time!
This time, research their products, their approach, their needs. The more you know about what the agency or company are looking for the better you can prepare yourself. What are their expectations of you? Who might you be interviewing with? (Linkedin is great for this)
Step 4 - Prepare your resume and application
Make sure you focus on what is relevant to the company you are applying to. What have you done that is important to them? Don’t focus on everything - narrow your focus to what matters
Spend time on your application. Your responses should be specific to the position and company
Step 5 - Follow up!
Companies get tons of applications. You can stand out by being a great candidate, but even great candidates get missed in the slew of applications. Follow up! Reach out. Be relentless. It’s always a no if you never fight for the yes.
Step 6 - Prepare for no
You’ll be told no a lot. That’s ok! Ask clarifying questions about why you were passed over and what you can do to become a better candidate in the future
Step 7 - Stay motivated!
You can do this. Educate yourself, refine your application and resume. Watch youtube videos, volunteer with nonprofits, help a friend start a business, start your own. Build a website, write a blog, try again!
By using a strategic approach to your career hunt you can help tilt the scales of success in your direction. Good luck, and happy hunting!

You know you're watching a marketer present when all the steps are to research hahaha :D
;)
I'm 2 years into my degree and my current teachers have really challenge what I thought I knew and show that for what I know there's so much I don't, so I'm here grateful of finding this channel so I can get an idea of what I need to learn and re-learn, I'll be watching this video for probably the next 8 or 9 years
Thanks for the kind words, Diego. Good luck!
Thanq soo much... It was a great advice... Keep bringing such great video.
Thank you, I will!
beautiful video, simple and straight to the point
Thanks, Jay!
I was sought out online a few days ago for an interview online by a marketing company. In return I scheduled a time for later today. With all the holiday mayhem I didn't get a chance to look into the company that reached out to me. With all the holiday chaos I didn't get a chance to call them for a brief chat. Marketing is totally new to me I've work in the customer service field a little over 10 years and would like a shot at doing this, even though I haven't practiced in almost ten years I'd like a change of pace and for the dramatics I've also come learn that I am unprepared for this job, this interview. As excited as I was doing the research, I looked at my wardrobe and realized I have no professional business attire, no resume paper, no haircut. Ok I'll stop there. Thanks to this video for keeping me motivated instead of kicking myself in the a**. Gonna call them and hopefully I can reschedule the interview.
Good luck, Winter_Wolf!

I really appreciate this video, I was recently approached by a marketing company. I know that I’m able to do the job, I just need it for the in-depth info of the characteristics of the job title itself. They invited me in for an interview, we’ll see how this goes. Thanks again.
That's great, Desmond! I hope your interview goes well! :)
How did it go?
Thank you so much for the valuable insights!
You're very welcome!
How to learn skills and what? Are certified courses the right way? What could/should a college fresher do to get in an internship and/or job offer just after graduation?
Certifications from Google, Blueprint from Facebook, etc, certainly don't hurt - especially when you're just starting out they can show that you've taken the time and energy to learn more about your craft.
Getting a job or internship directly after graduation can be difficult in ANY field so I recommend planning in advance - follow and engage with the social profiles of the companies you're interested in, attend their hiring events, make them aware of you.
Second, don't wait until graduation to get experience - volunteer your skills to a nonprofit, help a friend market their new business, start your own website selling knick-knacks and manage your own marketing. Being able to show some experience and tenacity goes a long way!
Anyone else couldn’t stop looking at his beard and thinking how long it was during the vid great advice tho!

I want to start as a director in a solar firm. May I know how to start?
Hmm... I'm not very familiar with the solar industry but I would say the key takeaways are the same - you've got to decide what you want ahead of time, you've got to know your craft, and you need to educate yourself (on the role and the company). Hope that helps!
@@Marketing360 Thank you!

I didn’t go to college, and I have autism. Just finished 3 interviews. My 2nd round interview is today. My mother says that she doesn’t think I qualify. I don’t know what to think .
Plenty of people in your life will tell you "no". You don't need to say it to yourself.
Congrats on your interviews - you've got this!
How is GBDA program of Waterloo to enter field of Digital Marketing?
Hi! Honestly I'm not familiar with Waterloo's GBDA program but at the end of the day it's really up to you. Education is incredibly valuable and so is experience. If you can get both and it aligns with your goals, go for it!
I can't handle all this research
Don’t worry, you’ll learn to love it!
Do you think it is too late to go to grad school to learn marketing at a age of 23?
Its only too late to go to school when you're 50
Not at all baby
Hell no!
It's never too late to do ANYTHING you want to do. 💪
Marketing 360 thank you.
And I should take the advice of a guy who looks like he combed his beard with a pork chop because.....?
Hey, pork chops are delicious I don't know what you're talking about... ;)
