Was Graduate School in Korea Worth It? Seoul National University GSIS || Alex: Uncut #3

  • I went to grad school at Seoul National University here in Korea, and I thought it was more than worthwhile. I learned a lot - not just in books, but also in my experiences working and learning in a truly international setting.
    For anyone interested, the grad school I went to was the SNU Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) and studied Area Studies (focus on East Asia):

    Alex: Uncut
    Alex is given three questions (that he's never heard), and he has to give a full 5-7 minute response to one of those questions.
    SELECTED:
    How did doing grad school in Korea change you and affect your life today?
    NOT SELECTED:
    If not Korea what other foreign place would you want to live?
    NOT SELECTED:
    What is something positive and negative that you have learned through your romantic relationships?
    Special thanks to Josh (IG: lathuanium) for helping out with this shoot. If you have a question you want to ask Alex, leave it in the comments!
    All the best,

    Do SNU have foundation year or we need A level score?

    • @AlexSigrist
      @AlexSigrist  3 роки тому +1

      As far as I know, with grad school you don't need a foundation year. However, if you go to grad school or undergrad with the Korean government scholarship (I think called the KGSP?), then you do have to do that one year of Korean studies before you start.
      Hope that helps!

    Should i pursue masters in mechanical engineering in Korea?

    • @AlexSigrist
      @AlexSigrist  4 роки тому +1

      I don't know much about mechanical engineering in Korea, though I expect it's pretty good with some really good opportunities to work for a large company in Korea and travel overseas as a foreigner.
      As long as you really double down on learning the language to an advanced level (in your field), I think it would only bring good things for you. Best of luck in your decision!

    • @Wooplot
      @Wooplot 3 роки тому

      I think it can be worthwhile for Americans because although they have to pay up front for tuition in Korea, it may be cheaper than back at home for a good university.

    • @AlexSigrist
      @AlexSigrist  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, definitely cheaper than America. If you can get into the government-funded universities, it's about half the cost of the other schools. Maybe $3000 a semester? Most difficult thing I did was try to work and do student council and do my regular classes in my second year. I should have worked a bit more in my first two semesters to help with the financial burden a bit more.

      Hey, that doesn't sound like a stupid goal to me! Go for it. I don't know what drama therapy is... But go for it^^
      My major allowed me to take courses in English. You could make it related to "how dramas and other forms of media impact international relations"... Or just learn as much Korean as you can and go directly for the major of your choice!

    Hi! I'm considering applying for a master's in Korea however, I'm a little bit scared I'm not smart enough? You hear about how hard Korean study in high school etc. For me personally, I do like to work hard but I also like my free time if that makes sense, so I'm not sure if my work ethic will fit. I'm definitely not very book smart but in my bachelor's, I was able to get through it fine with that work ethic. And also I had just great friends and together we would help each other get through assignments, I'm not entirely sure I would've managed if I was all by myself. So I'm afraid the standard of effort they expect as well as the workload will be significantly higher. The last thing I want to happen is to move to a different country(I have been to Korea before so that's not one of my worries haha) to continue my studies only to return not much later because it was way too difficult. So I was wondering if you can explain a little bit more about how you experienced the actual studying/workload etc.

    • @AlexSigrist
      @AlexSigrist  3 роки тому +3

      I found the workload to be very manageable if you're just studying. You can have a really nice school-life balance. However, because I didn't work much my first year of grad school, I had to work extra jobs my second year while I was on student council and taking classes, so I was definitely overworking - but I still was able to enjoy life a little.
      I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's difficult, but not something that is overwhelming. If it's what you want to do, you should go for it :)
